Just to remind everyone waiting:

Last year there were 102 people on the wait-list--that's 34 people per tier. They accepted 75 and another 11 were accepted elsewhere. In other words, 86 out of 102 got in somewhere.

They got a little over halfway through the third tier--only 16 people did not get in to SOME medical school. The first person in off of the third tier was end of May. The last person in off of the third tier was the second day of orientation.

Some advice:

Go ahead and start re-applying and get everything in--it will help you if you don't get accepted. This is especially true for third tier "wait-listees."

Well apparently I was one of 16 that didn't get in anywhere last year. Depressing.

But if they accepted 75 people and there are 34 people per tier, doesn't that mean only 7 were accepted from the lower tier and not a little over halfway?

I imagine there was some waiting list attrition and that is why they made it halfway through the third tier.

Ya that makes sense bc I'm sure there were some ppl that declined their acceptance from the waitlist.

I mean they HAVE to be getting close to the middle third, right?

I feel like someone who is good at statistics could probably figure this out.

It would be good if we could get a list including all friends, etc. who are on the middle and third tiers also. All the "friends" on the list are those that have already been accepted. Does anyone have a friend or know anyone who is on the first tier and has not been accepted yet?

Come on you first time posters.. don't be shy

I know of one person on the middle third and one person on the lower third.

Well I took a statistics class once, and the first person off the 2nd tier will get in this Friday.

👍

I barely got a B in statistics, so I didn't feel adequately qualified to make a prediction. Although I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night (I actually really did), so I agree with your prediction.

I said that they weren't expecting to get through the middle-third. I didn't say that they wouldn't.

Also, tuition is high for everyone...

Last year the CoA was 38,840

This year it is 41,225

That is IN STATE. Ouchies.

Any chance you could ask again around May 20th or so and find out how far they are expecting to get at that point?

Haha, I miss those commercials

$41,225! Ouch! They budget $16,419 for living expenses which I think is rather high for Birmingham (unless you have a lot of credit card debt or a car payment or something)... but that's just me

On a totally random off topic note... Is anyone else as excited as I am that Iron Man 2 comes out tomorrow!!!!!! \(^o^)/

Ya, I'm siked for that movie too. But seriously, isn't admission into med school hard enough? Now they're increasing the tuition. Wow.

OOS tuition is now a whopping $58,590, and that precludes fees, books, & living expenses.
have you noticed at both UAB and South that some of the OOS who have posted on the forum are getting status as IS and therefore are able to escape the whopping OOS tuition - doesn't seem like either school should allow that to happen.

WTF. Is that really happening? 😡

I know South considers people that are from the Gulf Coast Area as IS. I was not aware of UAB doing something of that sort considering it doesn't service a large population of any other state like South does.

UAB has a very strict IS policy whoever said they are just letting oos people off the hook is completely wrong.

For those already accepted from the waitlist, how long after the e-mail acceptance before you received the actual letter containing the return acceptance form in it?

I agree. I have a friend who tried to get IS status, and he probably really should have been, but he was denied.

UAB does not allow that at all.

South only allows that for certain counties near the Mobile area.

umm living expenses are actually pretty high in birmingham... it isn't uncommon to pay 600-900 in rent a month for a 1br place.

That's funny, I was very pleased with how much i'm getting for so little in Birmingham. It's all relative. I have friends moving to other cities paying double what I am in Birmingham for half the space.

Although I will say this, car insurance in Alabama is insanely expensive. Wasn't expecting that.

I don't know where you're living?! haha I pay about $600 for a 1br townhouse in Mountain Brook and it's huge!! I will admit that I'm use to Chicago prices where a studio apartment can run for $1200 a month. So, I guess it is all relative.

Seriously! I am paying more here then I did when I lived in Chicago. It's ridiculous!! I love how in the morning the traffic people on the radio stations sometimes say, "There are no accidents on 65 yet, but we'll let you know when it happens." hehe People don't know how to drive around here and/or a lot of people are uninsured. 😛

No truer words have ever been spoken.

I hope we hear of a few more people getting in this week :xf:

Found this on UAB's website.. "Information for Current Applicants" http://medicine.uab.edu/education/prospective/49492/
says it was posted on 5/7/10...

2010 Alternate List Applicants
We are pleased you are interested in a program of study at the University of Alabama School of Medicine.

Currently we are accepting applicants from the "Middle Third" of our Alternate List. Since acceptances from the Alternate List are in response to withdrawals by currently accepted applicants, we cannot predict if or when the next Alternate will be accepted.

An acceptance would be a wonderful graduation present on Friday!!

If they accept me I'm going to tell them to bugger off. Sick of dealing with UAB.

congrats on getting an acceptance to UF.. you could always email them and tell them to remove you from the alternate list but obviously that is entirely your decision..

I want the satisfaction of telling them no. It just seems all the sweeter if they actually accept me.

Haha I don't blame you.

I really do like UAB, and had they accepted me outright I would definitely have chosen UAB. I just didn't feel the love from them that I did from the other schools that accepted me (mainly UF). I also didn't get that love-at-first-sight feeling that I had when I interviewed at UF.

I didn't want you guys to think I was bashing UAB or anything. They're obviously a great school, and I've enjoyed my time here in undergrad as well as grad school. Birmingham isn't as bad as people make it out to be. There's tons of stuff to do, you just have to know where to look 🙂

do they put out of state people on the waitlist?

There might be a few OOS people on the waitlist, but I bet it is mostly IS since they have already given out so many OOS acceptances.

I really hope this middle third gets rollin!

Do you think there will be a lot of movement tomorrow? It's been rather quiet lately. Anyone enjoying Do Dah Day on Saturday?!

I think there might be a little bit tomorrow, but I would expect more on Monday and all throughout next week.

Never heard of Do Dah Day!
