Its still early. SDN can be crazy sometimes, I know. But try to remember that it's only JULY and there are still many more months full of opportunities to get a secondary.

Yea, I'm just hoping that SDN isn't representative of the majority of applicants in this case. I still haven't gotten UCSF's secondary and every day my hopes kind of go down because more people are getting theirs. 🙁

Chin up! It's still very early so you never know...you'll probably get it when you least expect it 🙂

I also didn't get UCLA or UCSD secondary apps either yet even though I did get the one from UCSF...guess you never know what these UCs are looking for...

I know this is a recurring question... but any OOSers get some love now that it seems a lot of the IS people have been finding out for a few weeks?

nope. got la's and sd's though.

hey guys can applying to prime US hurt your application? By that I mean, will UCSF reject your secondary outright if I don't get into the prime US, or will they still consider me for the normal MD program?

I sincerely hope not since I applied for the Prime US program as well and I believe the forms said that it would not affect your application. I believe they said they just choose people for the program from their pool of students admitted for either the regular MD program or the JMP (i.e. Prime US is not an alternative way of getting into their medical school). And besides...if it's something you really want to do, might as well go for it and take the chance! I am! 🙂

wow really? Thats seriously such a relief. Yeah this program sounds fantastic! I'm really thinking of applying for it...

Yay! Good luck and hopefully we'll both manage to get it someday! 😀

someone told me today that if you are:
1) cali resident (most important)
2) 30>= mcat
3) 3.5/3.6 gpa

youll most likely get a secondary. is this true? sorta surprising if it is....at least from ucsf...anyone have thoughts on this

I hope so. I meet all 3 criteria and I haven't gotten a secondary yet.

This cant be true. They say they only send out 1500 apps for secondaries this includes OOS people. There are probably 3000 people with that alone that are cali residents applying. I dont think its true, but

AMCAS Data Received7/19/2009 Secondary Requested7/19/2009
Congratulations. We want to know more about you.

I got the secondary email right after I got the acknowledgment email... makes me think that the screening is based on numbers (mine aren't that good...), but then I've read in the topic that perhaps they looked at other stuff too?

did you just get it right now?

It's really funny - I got the Status Update e-mail inviting me to complete a 2nd right before I got the acknowledgment e-mail...
Do they screen before AMCAS verifies the apps?

They are supposed to screen... which means they must look at your AMCAS. And they don't get to see your AMCAS until you are verified I believe. They'll know who's applying to them, but I don't think they know the information (since your GPA isn't actually calculated until you are fully verified by AMCAS).

I'm still waiting too. My AMCAS was verified Jul 13th; still nothing from UCSF or UCLA - not even acknowledgment emails 🙁 I guess they wait to send that with the secondary or rejection letter?

[I'm OOS]

/twiddle thumbs

So, the secondary coming right after the application acknowledgment doesnt necessarily mean they dont screen.

1) They might sent acknowl emails as they are processing your app
2) On the other hand, it seems to corroborate what i heard, which is if u hit a certain mcat/gpa minimum theyll automatically send a secondary. That said...i know people who had fairly low mcats and they still got secondaries ("automatically") from ucsf. Lowest that my friends had was a 30 (in state)....i dont know what to think though...

I got an e-mail for receipt of primary on July 1st, but still haven't heard anything else. I'm so confused.

I think the UCs have their own weird ways of screening people. I mean, your credentials (in terms of MCATs and ECs) are much more impressive than mine. Maybe they're considering your undergrad institution and your PS?

An advisor at my school did a presentation on the UCSF process. He said that there are certain stat cutoffs that will get an automatic secondary. He said everyone else is put into the rejection pile. They then read through every applicant in the rejection pile, paying extreme attention to personal statements. Slowly people who have made a strong impression through thier entire file are pulled from the rejection pile and sent a secondary. So we just need to be patient.

Obviously there is no one on here that has received a secondary that wasn't directly after acknowlegement. So give it some time, and I have a feeling a lot of us will be getting some supplementials.

thanks for the info 🙂

I know it's just semantics, but it's sad to think that we start in the rejection pile and that the burden is on us to get out of that pile.

did your advisor mention anything about OOS students? how come none of them have received secondaries even though many have high stats?

...not that I'm complaining; I don't mind waiting, but still!

UCSF says they screen for OOS before they send out secondaries. So if I'm right, they are looking through our primaries right now before sending us secondaries. So the MCAT/GPA cutoff doesn't really count.

Don't worry, I'm waiting too... 😎

ooooh ok, that's lame considering they're SUPPOSEDLY indifferent to residency...

I doubt that's right. That would be almost everybody.

UCSF gives a slight preference to California residents. This preference disappears once you've made it to the interview stage. Dean Wofsy (great speaker) tells you himself during your interview day that once you're offered an interview, your state of residence won't affect your decision.

i know someone with 31 (i think it was, either that or a 30) and decent gpa/instate who got a secondary...dont get too upset yet peoples

One of my best friends who applied last year had a 30 on the MCAT and got a secondary (though not an interview). I think as long as you do decently well on MCAT, it shouldn't automatically disqualify you from getting a secondary.

This is slightly disheartening. UCSF is one of my top choices. They received my AMCAS on 7/7 and I still haven't gotten a secondary invite. Has anyone who submitted theres after that already gottten an invite? Do they tell you when they decide they don't want one from you?

I thought I would make it through any cut off: cGPA 3.75, sGPA 3.58, MCAT 34.

🙁

I submitted before that and I haven't heard a damn thing.

They received my AMCAS the same day too, and nothing. Pretty similar stats.

lol, every time someone posts on this thread, I think, "Dang! People are getting secondaries and I still haven't gotten one"...

Someone in my lab is attending UCSF in the fall (CA resident), and she said that UCSF can be pretty slow in handing out secondaries. So I think it's still pretty early to worry just yet. 🙂

Do we create an account to check on our status first, or do we wait for an invitation email first and then create an account?

Sweet. We can commiserate and wonder why we got tossed in the "Disregard Until Further Notice" pile instead of the "This Kid's Awesome Let's Give Him a Secondary" pile.

i dont mind them taking their time as long as they'll send it to me eventually and interview me right after 😉

i wouldnt mind an acceptance right away either 😛

If any oos people do get/have gotten secondaries from ucsf, could you let us know? I'd like to get an idea of when I might expect one if I should be fortunate enough (or when I should start worrying if I haven't gotten one yet). Until then, I've got plenty of other secondaries to keep me busy.

wewt got amcas verified today and then got the secondary within a few hours 😀

I would kill to attend UCSF
