Does Maryland send Hold emails, or is it a Status Page update?

Complete late July... no invite, no hold, no rejection. 😕

Are you in-state or Out state?

OOS - although resident of DC which someone told me they consider in stateish. Took Science in the Evening Courses at UMD which I didn't do so great in (come on after working full time and ocmmuting hours!) which I'm convincing myself has something to do with this. All I can do is focus on the interviews I have.

Just wondering if any of you current students chose UMd over GTown and if so why?

$$$ for sure but I was also interested in any noneconomic reason(s)

$$$ for sure but I was also interested in any noneconomic reason(s)

If you have an interview day at both, you'd see why I chose maryland over gtown.

money, sure it's a big deal. Georgetown students have to take classes with SMP students and GEM students, which makes their class of '200' into a class of 400 (im pretty sure that they're in on the curve too. That is all about making money for the school, and seems to ignore what's best for their med students.

They are in school all day long while at maryland its 8-12. Everything at gtown is also in the basement, maryland's facilities were much nicer.

georgetown's research requirement which had initially peaked my interest, you can fulfill it by writing a short paper on a clinical experience you had. You should dig around on the gtown acceptance thread from last year, I think we talked about it for a very long time.

most of all, me and gtown just had different ideals. they really want to get their students out doing community service as much as possible, and me? im more research oriented. so it is really a personal choice.

btw, I couldn't be happier with my choice.

Just got a hold e-mail this morning. OOS. Not sure when I was complete but I submitted 2 months ago, yet when I checked the status site like 3 weeks ago (last time I checked) my letters still weren't downloaded.

The Committee on Admissions at the University of Maryland School of Medicine has made an initial review of your application but has not yet reached a final decision as to whether or not to invite you to interview. Please be assured that this situation is not an unusual one. The limited number of interview slots, the very large number of applicants and the competitive nature of the selection process this year have made many of our decisions very difficult. Your application has been placed on hold.

The Committee will periodically review your credentials and will notify you as soon as a final decision has been reached. At that time you will either be invited to interview or you will be notified that the Committee on Admissions can not consider your application further.

Please keep in mind that this is a year long process. Interviews are conducted at the School of Medicine through the month of March. Therefore, you may not receive definitive notification regarding your status for some time. You are welcome to submit any additional significant information, or updates, in support of your application as you see fit. I assure you that any new information that you submit will be placed in your file. I do ask though that you keep all other inquiries to a minimum so that the Committee on Admissions can complete the task of selecting the next entering freshman class.

I thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland School of Medicine. I also appreciate your patience and wish you the best of luck!

Congrats! Lucky you - I've been on pre-interview hold for the past two weeks or so. Waiting for some love from Maryland!

I'm on pre-int hold too...

Does anyone know what the chances are of being interviewed off the hold list? Do we really have a shot? Or is it just a delayed rejection?

Reeeeeeeeejected! after pre-interview hold for about two weeks. I was in the middle of planning out what to send in as an update until I received this yesterday. Cant say i am not hurt about this but at the same time I am not sweating it. So much for in state love. Goodluck to everyone else who is still waiting and those who have been accepted already. I cant help but hate maryland🙁. THEIR LOSS!

Aw man that stinks. Sorry to hear about it. Seems like you wanted to attend maryland too 🙂. Why do you think they rejected you so soon?

I am certain its because of my average stats. They seem to put alot of emphasis on numbers at least in my opinion. Of the 12 schools I applied to I am interviewing at 10 and already have 3 acceptances so obviously they saw something in me that Maryland didn't. This just goes to show how random the application process is because you really don't know how things will work out. it makes you appreciate it that much more when you get accepted. Goodluck to you though, i hope you have better luck than i did🙂

Thanks man, Maryland is definitely my top choice.Congrats on your acceptances! 🙂

Congrats LucyMed! Mind sharing your stats?

I was complete mid-September and put on hold last week.

Of course; average stats, 30 MCAT, 3.5 science gpa, 3.7c gpa. Research, medical assistant work, leadership -- seems strange that they would put me on hold for only 2 weeks but I guess they really must review all of us continually.

Good luck to all!!

Thanks LucyMed! Good luck on your interview. Hopefully will hear good news soon!

Congrats ProtonatedAlchy! Do you mind sharing when you interviewed?

Complete 10/19
Pre-interview HOLD 10/28

IN STATE APPLICANT - makes me sad I might not be able to stay close to home.

May University of Maryland be illuminated when the bright lights of my sunny attitude shine at their Med Campus (4 years of me at your med school means less money wasted on electricity!)

PLEASE GIVE ME AN INTERVIEW, PLEASE!!!

What are these "Pre-Interview Holds" yall keep speaking of? Where you emailed it? Im IS, complete since early August, and I have heard nothing.

YES, I was emailed from UMD that I was put on hold. Maybe call them and find out whats going on, most of my friends that applied to UMD heard back about interviews/holds/rejections within a few weeks.

OMG!! CONGRATS!! Thats awesome, I hope I am saying the same thing on this thread in a few weeks.

REALLY wanna go to MD, my instate school, close to home and really really good.

You'll be awesome in your interview, and I don't think you are fighting for a waitlist spot. I think everyone who goes into an interview is on equal footing. Usually ppl find out from UMD within a few weeks about their results.

GOOD LUCK!! 🙂

Man am I bummed right now. I go to Boston College, graduating this year, so I applied to about 4 schools up in the Northeastern area, and 4 schools down in the Mid-Atlantic. UMD is clearly my top/favorite choice. I am in state, 31Q with a 3.4science and 3.6cumulative, with Dad and Grandfather alumni from the medical school. Secondary was complete on 11/3, and two days later (today) and I get an email about being PUT ON HOLD. God, what a blow. When I saw that email, I was getting so excited for a chance to interview, only to find out this. I realize that I was extremely late in applying (but took MCATs in August, so all things considered) and my stats arent above the roof, but I don't know, just bummed. I guess its not an outright rejection, but how have people been dealing with these holds? They say its a "year long process" in the email, but people on this post have been hearing rejection/interview after being on hold for only about 3 weeks. Crazy, I just don't even know what to expect. I could give a **** about the other schools I applied to, I want MD. If anyone has any direct lines to God, please give me your Paypal

I wouldn't sweat it. I am on hold too and from the Eastern Shore of MD. The hold hasn't really phased me much the past couple of weeks. Maryland is my favorite and top choice for a number of reasons (I want to practice and do my residency in Maryland as well). I have been accepted at another medical school, but I believe I best fit at Maryland. So if I don't get an interview or acceptance from them, there is always next year. I would be a little bummed because I feel ready to tackle medical school especially with my new research job. But if it happens it is not the end of the world - I'll be even better prepared the following year. I believe in myself in being a good doc and I know I will be one someday and that is all that matters. If you are determined to have a career in medicine, MCAT scores, interview holds, etc don't matter.

That's a good way to look at things. I've been much better about it now, just kind of a shock factor that first night. Hopefully it all works out, and if not, I'll have a year off to do what I've always wanted to do: move out west and ski an entire season.

Anyone has any hotel suggestions? All of the ones suggested on the school's website were expensive.

Has anyone been complete here for over 5 months without any status update or news. I mean I assume I'm "on hold" but when am I going to receive that status????

I haven't looked at the website suggestions but unfortunately the medical school is located right near the Inner Harbor and thus the nearby hotels are going to be more expensive as a result. If you're driving in and stay outside of Baltimore, you're more likely to find a cheaper hotel. Otherwise you can try to use hotels.com or another such site to where you can choose the general area of a hotel and try to get a lower price that you would by booking a specific hotel. Additionally, the Admissions Office used to keep a list of 1st and 2nd years willing to host those coming from out of town but I don't know if they still do. You can always call and ask.

The holiday inn is $92 with the king bed. Honestly the best hotel i've stayed at so far. It has a SO much room, couch, furniture, and an all around fancy feel without being too fancy 😍

I was looking at hotels ~7+ miles away from the school, and they were only $50/night. How is traffic in Baltimore though? I'm afraid of staying too far away and then being late to the interview.

I've been on hold for nearly a month (hold email 10/13) i submitted around mid september.

what i don't understand is that my letters haven't been downloaded according to the status page..called them last week and was told they were just downloading them...but it hasn't been updated on the status page

how did they put me on hold without my letters??? haha i guess they don't look at letters..it's probably my stats haha

Depends on where the hotel is and where you're coming from. Coming from north of Baltimore will be harder (due to traffic) than coming from south or west. The medical school is located pretty close to 95. But you'll still want to give yourself plenty of time in the morning in case you hit traffic. Its doable, just not ideal.

Traffic coming from I-95 south going north is not bad at all... just leave time for unexpected one way streets and stuff (like any city). Getting into baltimore is not bad at all.. its leaving baltimore thats the problem (which you don't have to worry about).

There are a lot of cheap hotels near BWI in columbia, jessup, and elkridge. It is a 20 minute drive up 95 but theres barely ever any traffic (even in the rain).

Snail mail rejection here too. Not sure what happened. I thought my stats were competitive for this school.

Good luck everyone.

Snail Mail rejection friday.
Im out of state (live in PA). just pisses me off as my father did 20 years in the Maryland Army National Guard and my stats were above theirs...figured that would help...guess no love for the military 😡.

Snail mail rejection here as well. Kinda expected it though.

5 months didn't hear anything. I sent them an "in the area" email for another interview. And a few days later, I get my rejection notice....Nice Maryland

It took more than a month for Maryland to download my recommendation letters. No word from Maryland since my application was marked completed. Don't know if this means a pending rejection or...a possible interview invite.

I called the admission office and a person from the admission committee told me that they received more than 5000 applications in September. I think the increase in applications is why we see so many holds and rejections this year. I wonder how many interview spots are left... 🙁
I am trying to stay optimistic, but this process of waiting and more waiting is so stressful..it is driving me insane.

Today is exactly 4 weeks since my interview... no word yet. I really hope I hear something this week.

Lame I just got a letter from University of Maryland saying that at this time they were unable to make a decision on my application and they are going to keep reviewing it and decide whether to accept reject or waitlist me at a later date.

I have no idea what this means, I mean on the website it says that usually people in this situation arent reviewed again until april but in the letter it said they were going to keep reviewing my application periodically and let me know if they accept reject or waitlist me asap...

I am sad

I received this also in early-ish October and then received an interview invite a couple weeks later; thus they really must keep reviewing everyone that they have placed in this "hold" category! Don't be sad! Keep hoping!

I think he was talking about after his interview.

Yeah as the poster above me said this refers to after my interview. I interviewed on October 21st and they told me they have yet to come to a conclusion and that they are going to keep reviewing my file periodically and let me know when they come to a conclusion (to accept reject or to waitlist). It's just a shame because I feel like my interview went well and other than send a letter of intent i'm not sure what else to do other than wait. I've heard of people having success in this situation but we'll see I just wish they would give me a time frame as to when I would hear from them again...
