Yeah as the poster above me said this refers to after my interview. I interviewed on October 21st and they told me they have yet to come to a conclusion and that they are going to keep reviewing my file periodically and let me know when they come to a conclusion (to accept reject or to waitlist). It's just a shame because I feel like my interview went well and other than send a letter of intent i'm not sure what else to do other than wait. I've heard of people having success in this situation but we'll see I just wish they would give me a time frame as to when I would hear from them again...

Ahh I'm sorry, it's been a long day 🙂 Keep your head up, and all the best of luck to you. What will be, will be...

Got an interview invite from Maryland today!! Just when I have almost given up hope of getting an interview from Maryland... there comes the good news. 🙄 More interview invites are still being handed out. For people who are still waiting, there is hope!

I got my acceptance letter in the mail yesterday! I interviewed on 10/2. Hooray -- I needed some good news.

i got an interview invite this past friday! it's on january 13th🙂 so so excited!

i don't get it. i definitely submitted this application back in september, and called last week about my LOR which were not updated on the status page. I was told that they had just downloaded my letters that day--and it takes about a week to update. Week later--still no update; when I call I get the same thing: "just wait"

come on MD--why do you hate me so! I don't want this to negatively affect my app! reminds me about last year when UCD lost my letters twice...and probalby ended up screwing my chances...

So I received the same POST-interview "unable to make a decision at this time" letter as a previous poster. :scared: Does anyone know what's the best thing to do at this point? I'm planning to email admissions with a significant update or two for my file this week, but should I turn that into a full-fledged letter of interest (what even is a letter of interest)?

From what I've heard this isn't necessarily a death sentence. From what i understand they rereview people in our situation every month as more applicants interview. I suppose it makes sense, they can't accept everyone they like right away so it makes sense that they would not have any more spots for people who interview in february or march.

I have a friend who interviewed in September got this status in October and then got in in November. I've also heard of people getting this status then getting in 3-4 months later. Of course from what I gather many of these people do get wait listed but one of my friends told me that theres like 20 people in the class right now who got in off the waitlist so even thats not a death sentence.

I would say just contact Dr. Foxwell, by letter or by email (the letter did say to bring any updates to his attention) rather than just contacting the office of admissions.

Best of luck to you!

Is it worrisome that I haven't heard ANYTHING from this school since I applied in July?

Hey I was just wondering if anyone places on preinterview hold has heard anything from UMaryland yet? When do they review their apps?

Complete - 10/11 (or that week)
On hold - 10/28 week
since then - no news about my app!

IS, average stats, but lots of love for b'more and maryland. it would break my heart if i didn't get in in my own state.

Same here, placed on hold around 10/28. No updates since!

*bump*

can't believe no one has been commenting on this thread for the past 4 days!!

I'm sitting here checking my email for UMD every 2 seconds!

hm ok I guess I'm getting a little anxious since I have received no response since my hold notice in October.

any takes on what this hold could be if I haven't heard back about an interview yet?

I'm getting nervous about my interview here! Anyone has any advice?

I'm getting nervous about my interview here! Anyone has any advice?

I doubt I have any new advice, but just be yourself (or at least a professional version - ha). Be prepared to ask plenty of questions about what interests you, make sure you are always listening during the presentations and tours since you will develop more questions here. Make sure they know you're a compassionate person (we all are since we want to be docs, but don't let them think otherwise) and that you know what it takes to be a doctor. Just be honest and enthusiastic and follow-up with thank you letters. Nothing more specific than that, but if you're getting interviewed, you should be fine, especially if you're in state.

I'm not in-state...which is one of the reasons I'm pretty nervous about this interview because I heard they favor in-state or out-of-state from the region (VA, PA, etc).

Here's how I see it...yes, they obviously have a preference for in-state students like all state schools that receive significant funding have to do. However, you were granted an interview so they like you and see you as being qualified. The simple fact that you were selected to interview as an out-of-stater says A LOT. I know I can tell you not to worry, but it's not going to matter (but I'll say it anyway), stop worrying. What's the worst that can happen? You go somewhere else or reapply next year - there are many worse things in this world and you'll still be years ahead of me (I'm already 30!). So, since this isn't going to work, I decided to back it up with some analysis. Basically, if you go through their numbers you will see that for the 2013 class they interviewed only 3.6% of the out-of-state applicants (quite a feat you've already accomplished) while they interviewed 25% of in-state applicants. Also, by doing some really easy math, you will also see that they accepted 1 in 4 of the out-of-state applicants they interviewed. While that is significantly lower than the 59% of in-state applicants accepted that interviewed, 25% is still a very good chance, especially when compared to many other medical schools. So, I'd just say make sure you're prepared b/c you obviously have a fighting chance and only need to be better than 3 of 4 out-of-state applicants. I know med school applicants are pretty great, but it wouldn't be so worthwhile if it were easy. Hopefully this helps you a little. Keep me posted about how it goes.

Nov 11 interview here too, accepted and got the letter today all the way in Cali!

Got my acceptance package today! So excited! I interviewed 12/2 and im IS

accepted today!! first acceptance...so excited!! interviewed 11/18.

So it turns out I was rejected back in October, but my parents opened the letter and neglected to tell me. I hate that they send correspondence to your home address, and that my parents don't understand the meaning of the word "privacy."

It makes it look bleak for OOS applicants.

Btw, I applied December 14, and received my hold email today.

hey everyone I got accepted to Maryland a couple weeks ago. The letter was dated December 15th. On the letter of acceptance it says you have 3 weeks to send in the letter of acceptance signed. I sent it in last week but because of the holidays it says it wont get there until january 4th which is right around 3 weeks. Should I be worried about my offer being withdrawn or do you think they will be more lenient on the deadline because of the holidays? Thanks

I would call them and tell them you'll be accepting the offer. Let them know that you're worried about the letter getting there on time due to the holidays and perhaps ask them if you can fax it to ensure they receive it on time. That way at least you'll know if the deadline is flexible or not and they'll be notified even if they don't receive the letter through the mail on time. Good luck!

Has anyone else who interviewed Dec 2 heard anything? Its been almost 6 weeks...not sure if it's a good idea to call or keep waiting.

i interviewed 12/2...just heard back today.

Its been like 2 months since my last update from maryland (no decision yet post interview still actively being considered etc etc).

I wish they would just let me in already, or even waitlist/reject me. I just don't like all this waiting, I want to know what I'm doing next year.

I feel ya man. I interviewed 3 months ago. I'm also still being actively considered. I called them and found out that:

(1) my application was put on hold (not sure if that means it was being actively considered and then got put on hold or if active consideration = hold)

and

(2) they will reconsider applications on hold in april and send out final decisions on those applications in may.

i've heard stories of people who get in the day before classes start. so don't lose hope.

I know that being told you are being "actively considered" isn't a hold in all cases (though it does seem to be the case for most). One of my friends interviewed this September and got the active consideration letter in october and then got accepted in november.

I've also heard of some people getting in around march after receiving this letter.

To me at least there seems to be a big difference between hold and active consideration, I wish they would still send us updates on our applications, the letter says our application would be periodically rereviewed as more applicants interviewed...Periodically to me doesn't imply that they look at us again in april.

i interviewed 12/2...just heard back today.

I was wondering, when was your letter dated and are you a MD resident? I am still waiting to hear back and interviewed around the same time as you.

Hey everyone, I hope this app cycle is treating you well. I'm a current 4th year at Maryland who just wanted to impart some quick advice. Looking back on the days when I was trying to decide which school to go to, I think my biggest flaw in reasoning when sitting where you all are was my fixation on the pre-clinical curriculum. To be honest, no matter what school you go to, you're going to learn all the same stuff 1st and 2nd year.

We all take step 1 around the same time, but what differs from school to school is how your 3rd and 4th year is set up, which I think is far more important to your education as a med student. Outside of half days vs whole days and 1yr vs 18 months vs 2 years for pre clinicals, forget about all the rest like facilities, class sizes and whatever else mattered in college. It gets old quick. Things I would have liked to know before making a decision:

1) Do you get elective time 3rd year? For those of you who take a little longer making big decisions (like what specialty youll go into), an elective 3rd year outside the core rotations may buy you more time to consider a specialty outside of IM/FM/Surgery/Peds/Psych.
2) How many months of each do you have? Is it 3 months of medicine and surgery, or two of each? Two months of family med, or one?
3) How many months of sub-I's do you have? Do you do any?
4) Do the students who you interact with during your tours (usually 4th years) and lunches (either 1st and 2nd years or 4th years) feel that the atmosphere is collaborative? Did they ever feel there was a lot of competition in their class?
5) For the fourth years youll meet, do they feel prepared to begin internship?
6) How many away rotations does the school allow?
7) How much elective time do you get total?
8) Do you get months off for study time for Step 2 or for interviews? (the importance of this is understated!)
9) How do the students do in the match? ***No, I DONT mean how many people matched into Plastics/Derm/Neurosurg/Ortho at Hopkins/MGH/UCSF/Duke.*** That means nothing. I mean when students apply for residency programs, how many end up matching in one of their top 3 choices? In my opinion, a more successful match is a class who all applied to family med, psych and neuro and matched to their #1 program rather than one where everyone applies to derm, rad onc or plastics and everyone gets their #20.
10) How independent have you been on rotations? Is it just shadowing, or are you asked to do independent H&P's on your patients, make recommendations on what medications your patients should get and why, what consults should be called, etc.

These are all things that I think pre-meds applying should focus on, but dont because all you see is more classroom for 2 years, nor does any med school do a good job of stressing the importance of your clinical education. I think that's probably more of a failure on our end if anything.

Regardless, I'm overall happy with Maryland and would choose it all over again if I had to. This is only one man's opinion, but I think my clinical education has been excellent and I do feel as prepared as I'm going to get come the start of internship in late June.

I wont be here by time any of you who decide to come is here, but best of luck!

I interviewed on 12/9 and heard back today. My envelope was dated Jan 13 and was sent to me in California.

Agree with all of this 100%

i got an interview invite this past friday! it's on january 13th🙂 so so excited!

Are you IS?? Cuz I received my invite in mid september for an interview in late January. 🙁

Just to give you folks still waiting some hope, I was interviewed in end of January, placed on post-interview hold (ultimately placed on the waitlist) and accepted in mid-May. Keep your chin up, all is not lost.

Do you know the number of students in your class who were taken off the wait list?

I know a few people who got put on hold and heard something but none recently. I wouldnt lost hope though you havent been straight up rejected yet.

Anyone hear anything lately? It has been 7 weeks since my interview and I am going nuts... Really want to go to Maryland. It seems like MD residents tend to hear later on in the week... so maybe this Friday?

I know what you're talking about! I interviewed on 12/14 I believe and haven't heard anything. At the interview, Dr. Foxwell said our group would hear by 1/18....

Accepted yesterday via phone call. I am super excited... and will definitely be attending next fall. Interviewed Dec 9th.

Interviewed here this week. Everyone was so incredibly friendly! I loved the facilities and was very impressed with the school's history, match list, etc. Gorgeous place. A little wary about the area right across Martin Luther King Boulevard (The ghetto) and the letter grading. Students said letter grading didn't matter, but I got the feeling there was more competition cuz of it. Anyone else still debating the importance of letter grades?

Just got my rejection letter. Congrats to everyone who made it  and good luck in med school next year!
