the convo was weird because she told me that ALL missouri residents with 3.5+ gpas and 28+ mcats were guaranteed interviews. i thought to myself why is half their class 50% out of state then? i mean, with guarantees like that why wouldnt the whole state of missouri apply???

but i did end up applying because she then stressed that the committee really wants to find people to add to the diversity of their class. i think u and i got the same email so you wouldnt be any later than I am. they apparrently don't give out invites anyway until after november is what she told me. so if u have good reasons why you would add to the school's diversity, definitely just give it a shot...the chances of the med school application game are so random and weird, who knows what school will like u and which ones won't

Did she tell you that half of their class was from out of state? When I look at their demographics online, it says that the 2008 entering class had 82 Missouri residents and 14 out of state residents.

And you're right, the application game is so random and weird...I'm really hoping I can be one of those anomalies that's gets an acceptance haha. Because I wasn't going to apply this year, I haven't even done my AMCAS yet...but I'm going to spend all of today and tomorrow doing that along with my personal statement(I can't believe I'm writing one in two days :scared: hahaha). After that, I need to rush out and get the rest of my LOR's in.

But anyways, thanks for the info.

Btw, are you going to apply to their MD/PhD joint program?

hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone received an email from Mizzou asking you to apply because your "MCAT is very competitive"

The email said that even though I'm OOS, I should apply. Should I take this email seriously??? Do they really think my MCAT is competitive?😕

FYI: I'm applying to many schools but did not send my primary to Missouri, columbia.

hey, yeah i got this email...it said my "MCAT score is competitive"...do you if we should take it seriously? I haven't applied to mizzou yet.....

so i emailed Traci Wilson Kleekamp for an explanation for the email and how serious it is. this is her response:

"The AAMC provides member universities access to MCAT data -- as a recruiter that is the information I use to look for potential applicants.

Your MCAT score is very competitive.. I am looking in the range of 27-30+.

We have changed our recruiting strategy to go outside of Missouri to look for competitive students from diverse cultural, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds."

Yep, you, Drwham, and I have received that email.

I feel as though it was a mass email...but I'm still going to apply.

Can someone PM me the secondary prompts? I'd like to update the first post and the secondary application thread. Thanks!

I got an email yesterday saying my file was complete 🙂. I'm in state. Mizzou is my first choice. Anyone know how long it takes them to review and get back to you about interviews? Good luck to everyone here!

I just got an interview invite here today, October 7th! I am in-state, very excited for the interview!

Interview invite! Instate too. September 30, I'm ecstatic.

errr. I added them a couple days ago to my application. Got a email from them with a "out of state" form. they want me to explain why they should give me a chance. Is this like a pre-secondary??

I'm wondering the same thing 😕

hey you guys..I just have a couple of questions, if anyone could take the time to answer it it would be great. I recieved the out of stater email today asking me to tell them why they should consider me. Is this an email everyone who applies out of state receives?
Also, I am not sure what to fill out as my reasoning why. It would be awesome to attend this school, yet I have no ties whatsoever with Missouri, other than my best friend being from there. I have lived and attended school in the northeast my whole life, but I do think I can bring something diverse to the table. I was born in Bangladesh, a periphery country, and my parents bought me here when I was 5 for a better life. Would that help me in any way, or is there no point in discussing this, seeing as how America is the melting pot of the world and everyone has similar stories to tell. I am also really interested in the MD/PhD program. I did research in molecular biology for a year and fell in love with it..so I would love to get my PhD.
Which seems a stronger reason..the fact that I can bring some flavor to the school..or that I want to go into the combined program?

I would probably go with the diversity aspect. I am currently an undergraduate here and at a few pre-medical things they have sponsored they say if someone is out of state they are either looking for high stats or diversity. Hope that helps, good luck!

I am an OOS applicant, and I didn't get that e-mail. I just got the link to the secondary. 31R/4.0. I don't know if that makes any difference or not. I also didn't get any sort of e-mail from them about having a competitive MCAT score so who knows.

For those of you getting interviews, how long did it take them to invite you after you were complete?

For the people that have completed the OOS form, have you heard from MU yet?

Interview invite today! Instate re-app (alternate list last year), complete 9/29.

Uh oh! We were complete the same day! Are the emailing interview invites?

Yes, they are via e-mail. I wouldn't worry. Last year I was complete a 9/27, got the invite 10/22.... oddly enough the interview is on the same exact date as last year. So, I don't really know the method to their madness!

Right now, I'm just crossing my fingers that I'm not hearing anything from them because they're waiting for my MCAT re-take score to come out on the 13th. :xf: Some schools have already rejected me without it...guess they didn't want to wait!

I'm actually waiting on my re-take score as well ... Countdown to the 13th!! However since they interviewed me last year I guess they think my old score is good enough. Good luck to you!! :luck:

Hey all! MU is my home institution so I'm hoping to stay here.

I got my interview invite today, so:

Complete: 10/1

Interview: 11/17

IS and MDapps if you are curious.

Is there really no online option to pay for the secondary? And if you all mailed the $75 in, do you consider your complete date the day you submitted the app online, or the day they processed the app fee? Thanks 🙂

I think they consider you complete when they process your payment, but I could be wrong. I didn't see an option to pay online, but if you are in Columbia, you can hand your check off to the OME. If not, I'd next day it so they get it ASAP. Don't forget to include the top page of your secondary when you print it. It is also necessary for (timely, I suppose) processing of your application.

Thanks for your response Physio, i'll ship it out asap.

Hey Omzy,

I wanted to make sure I wasn't feeding you a line of crap, so I called the OME today and asked them about this. They said for certain that it isn't complete until the payment is processed, just so you know. Good luck!

I shipped it overnight and they got it this morning (because of Columbus day) and I got an email a few hours ago saying I was complete. Thanks for checking that 😀

Hey everyone! Interview invite here today! Received the email confirming that I was complete yesterday and received the invite today. Interview 11/18.

Congrats! 😀 Mind sharing your stats and whether you're IS or OOS?

Any news on the MU front lately? I doubt there were many, if any, acceptances on the 16th as regular app folks didn't start interviewing until the 1st.

I interviewed on the 7th and they told us they won't be handing out any acceptances or final decisions until the end of November so they can have a few weeks of interviews to review at that time.

So the waiting continues....

Did they explain the admissions process at all? I'm wondering if anything has changed since last cycle.

I do not think anything has changed since last cycle. They still tell you either acceptance, waitlist, or rejection at first and keep reviewing the waitlist pile every month up until March 15th when they make the final decisions and rank a waitlist of 96 people.

I think the only thing that has changed in the last few years is they now will only tell you what third you are in on the waitlist (not your exact number). Hope this helps!

Word on the street is that they are admitting 104 or 112 this year. For those of you counting at home that's one or two more PBL labs. I assume they'll rank the waitlist accordingly as well, but assuming with the admissions game is risky business!

Thanks for the congrats! Sorry for the delayed response. I'm IS, cumGPA: 3.98, sciGPA: 4.0, MCAT: 28Q.

Just dropping in to say I have confirmed that the class will be expanded to 104 this year. That is one additional PBL lab that will be added. Next year (class of 2015) will be expanded further by one additional PBL lab to 112.

How are the interviews structured here? What kind of questions did they ask you and how should I be preparing? My interview is next Wednesday the 4th of November.

You will have two one-on-one interviews that are an hour each. The interviews are open file, so they have access to all of your information. They asked a lot of the usual questions like why medicine and why Mizzou? Also make sure you have a valid opinion on the health care situation because both of my interviewers asked about it. Good luck!

There is the usual stuff: why medicine, why Mizzou, what makes you special, what are your other interests, etc. One of my interviewers asked about health insurance reform, I gave him my answer. The thing about that question is no matter your opinion, I think, don't pretend you have all of the answers. I expressed skepticism regarding current efforts and my concern about excessive govt. control over such a large and important issue. But I framed it (honestly) such that I was open-minded to some of the ideas being bandied about and want to see improvements in provision of care. I think, on those spicy topics they really just want to see that you've thought about the issue and can provide a reasoned, if not necessarily all encompassing manner. My interviewer specifically said he was impressed that I did not pretend to have all of the answers, but gave a thoughtful response.
Note: I doubt a simple "I don't know" is an "acceptable" answer. I just wouldn't be too arrogant with your opinion, whatever that may be

Also, I interviewed today, and one thing both my interviewers wanted me to do was "teach" them a certain subject. One of them gave me a scenario and one wanted me to pick something random and teach them about it. I think they were testing my ability to work in a PBL group. Just to give you a heads up 🙂

Just dropping by to say I talked with one of the deans today -- perk of the job. They will admit the usual class of 96, and if funding comes through for the PBL lab remodel in time for it to be finished before classes start, they'll expand the class to 104. They do not expect that decision to be made until April-May-ish. So if they end up adding to the class you can expect a little more wait list movement, but otherwise it's business as usual.
