Oh no that sucks! you're a genius so that means the rest of us have no chance...was this post-interview?

actually I don't feel bad for you cause you got into JH and WashU lol

I dont think that yall are doomed, it just confirms that different schools are looking for different things! UNC compared to other schools seems to look less at grades and scores (obviously they still count) and more at other things maybe like clinical experience, LOR, interesting things youve done in life...

When my sister applied, she got flat out rejected from some schools and accepted right away to others, all in the top 10. And she had some other friends that got into the ones she got rejected from, and rejected from ones that she got into.

It just has to be a fit! I guess thats why they recommend that you apply to a wide range of schools.

I can't be 100% positive, but my best guess would be the 11th. At my interview, they said their winter break would be Dec. 18 to Jan. 5, which is a Tuesday.

Correct me if I'm wrong... I think last year's thread had 12/16 acceptances. I don't see why the committee wouldn't go ahead and meet (if sub-committees had met this week)

I was referring to the next meeting, like the one after break. That was what the OP was asking, I believe. But yes, i think there is one on the 14th of December as well. I think I might go bonkers if the next time we could potentially hear something was January!!!🙂

Ohhh okay 🙂

Another Monday. So hard to study for finals today. Can we assume that if it is over the 8 week period, that there is a good chance we are out of the running?

I think a lot of us early interviewers are over the 8 week period. I don't think it means we're done. Then again, judge my statements in August.

I'd actually take some solace in them not meeting. That would mean that no spots were given out and I don't have to hear about other people getting exactly what I want most in life.

Then again, perhaps they did meet and no one on SDN was offered a spot.

I like your idea birdsbeak. They can meet but not give out any acceptances right? not going to worry anymore until after holidays and winter break, I guess

Holy crap, I can't believe this was me 4 years ago.

Congratulations on all y'all's hard work, and good luck!

If anybody has any school-specific (but not admissions-related) questions, feel free to PM me.

quick question: are there any oos applicants waiting to hear back post interview?

Are you IS or OOS? Looking at responses in SDN there is no defenite pattern of when one can expect to hear. If you are a minority with good record or exceptional with good record you will certainly hear back soon not just at UNC but from other schools as well. For the rest of us it just varies I think. It is difficult to know what the exact process is. Some of us not even heard anything on the IS or OOS status and I have to assume that not hearing after several weeks of interview despite above average stats of entering class means you are still in the running for a spot. Whatelse one needs to do to show your interest? 😕

I am in IS and considered minority, not AA. I have a good record. It has been 5 weeks including thanksgiving week. So I don't think 'minority with good record' means anything. I think there are less OOS interviewers than IS. So they can get to OOS faster. I think they take what state you were born in into consideration. That was the first question I was asked. I never thought not being born in NC, even though I have been a resident for the last 10years, may be considered. Also looking at demographics of last years entering class on their website. they put data about where ppl were born. I was thinking what does this matter? maybe it does

I am not sure if they take what state you are born into consideration, but rather what your status is In State meaning you are residing in the state on NC to qualify an instate student. Like most state supported schools it is always tough for OOS to get in and UNC is no exception. I was told not to apply to too many state sponsored school just for this reason.

Very speculative and factually incorrect...

Very speculative and factually incorrect...
BubbaChuck, you are correct that lot of things said here on SDN is speculative and factually incorrect. From the UNC 2013 stats they admitted 138 NC state legal residents of which 62 were born in state, so it is legal residence that counts not where one is born.

Do they also have data about other demographic stuff?

I think he was saying your quote is speculative, Joe. And I was just noticing this and realized it was my first question. By the way I was treated by the other state school in NC, I just assumed they dig deep about your connection to NC. Of course everything said here is speculative. We are not adcoms! Best holidays!

Ohh yeah... Just off question. Are most ppl instate born in NC? Bc all my friends from high school were born out of state and moved here with their families. I only had a bf that was born and raised in NC. I just assumed that NC is made up of a lot of newcomers. It is an attractive place to be!

quick question: are there any oos applicants waiting to hear back post interview?

Yup. To be fair, yesterday was just exactly at the 4-week mark, so I know I shouldn't be too anxious yet. I am having some difficulty taking my own advice on the issue to heart though... 🙂

Finally rejected today. I wasn't even sent a secondary

I was mainly just wondering because it seems to me that they may be trying to figure out their out of state apps earlier this year.... for looking at last year i didnt seem to see too many OOS rejections this early.

basically im a bit worried because i consider myself IS (for tax purposes I'm IS and have all my documents/legal residence in NC) but i was born and grew up OOS... I went to undergrad at UNC and have strong connections to the state. but for anyone with ambiguous state status, did it really seem like they were grilling you in the interview about it? I just figured that the ppl who did the residency stuff were a separate group of people and based it off the sheet we filled out with the secondary.

also, another question... do the interviewers look over your application beforehand or whats the exact format for unc?

thanks!!

they actually might have just asked you that cuz it seems like youve may have strong connections to another state.... i mean even by your screen name (maybe im specutlating... but... you know) or maybe you put something on your app that seemed to make them suspicious that you may not spend the rest of your life in nc (which is what they want) but who really knows

from my experience last year, yes they do. My interviewers had reviewed my file pretty thoroughly before I came in and asked me pretty specific questions about my file.

They could have read that from my AAMC, where I was born. Also, I went out of state for undergrad. And I just assumed most people haven't spent all 20+ years of their life in the same place. There seems to be a theme with NC state schools about staying in NC, but I doubt UNC cares as much as others. I have met residents at my schools hospital from UNC med. Spending your whole life in the same place is not a great way to learn and experience life. And it has definitly been encouraged by my family to go out of my comfort zone by living in other places. If you haven't lived somewhere else, I suggest you try it. Expecially living like a poor college student in new places. 🙂 It was a great way for me to mature and appreciate life. I am just sad if little things such as being born in another state and living outside NC for years could really matter that much... I would think someone who did live other places would be a plus in a class, hence oos students being important. I can see from your profile you have been pretty interesting places. I think that should be a plus for you 🙂 Good Luck

I was born in Chicago, grew up in Indiana, and am going to undergrad in DC. I've only been a NC resident since '06. I don't think it's a big deal as long as u demonstrate a commitment to serving the ppl of NC.

yeah and i mean that totally makes sense.... they dont want us to just take all their tax money and run... i 100% agree with them. i just hope they realize i love their state as much as i do 😍 hehehe

Agreed. And I am sure they know you love NC, since you applied to UNC and I am sure showed enthusiasm when speaking of it. I generally enjoy meeting ppl with interesting life experiences and have been places I haven't. Not everyone in the world agrees with that, including ppl making decisions

so any idea if the committee met on monday or not? or am i just the unlucky one to dread last part of this year w/ no hope?

I was wondering that myself. I do not know. I've not heard anything.

has someone called and asked? I bet they'd tell us, not like it's a secret or anything

i called them on fri and don't want to call again.... hopefully, someone can call and ask (perhaps anonymously) if the ctte has met. that would be a huge relief to many of us 👍 ok somebody do it

Well, I had to apply a little while ago for residency when I started taking classes there. I am a similar case, having moved here originally for college. I agree with the other opinions that it's likely they were worried about your ties elsewhere, because I actually did not feel that my residency came into question at all during interviews despite that I had had to appeal the decision in order to gain residency not long before! So I guess my point is that as long as you are officially an IS resident and don't make it seem that you're dying to get away from NC, I think that it should not be an issue.

I think it's important to make a point of convincing them that you want to stay in NC, esp if you're not originally from here. I'm from the midwest born and raised and have been living in NC for only 2 years. I made a very specific point of explaining to them in both interviews why I love NC and why I want to build my life here longterm. I mentioned that during the course of the interview and then when they asked if there was anything else I reiterated the same point. They may not actively question your residency but it's up to you to sell to them that you're serious about staying here. I felt like both my interviewers appreciated my making my long-term goal to stay here very clear and saw my sincerity on this issue. and I got an acceptance so it obviously didn't hurt me 🙂

the committee did meet monday, and they offered at least one acceptance 🙂

Friend of a friend of a friend got phonecall today. Don't know any further details, but this is to let ppl know those calls are being made on weds too

So I got the december update email today and it says that the admissions office will resume normal business hours on Dec. 28... So does that mean there will be a committee meeting that day?!?!? It would be so awesome if that were the case, instead of having to wait an extra 4 weeks! Thoughts?

hey guys and girls,

i just received the acceptance package in the mail (no phone call).

i'm IS and interviewed 10/2!

good luck to everyone else waiting :luck:

I got that email today, but I haven't even gotten a secondary yet. I had no clue I was even still in the running...
