so....what if community medicine program really wants you, and the college of medicine is "so-so" about you?? 🙄

You have to be accepted into the College of Medicine in order to attend the School of Community Medicine because the 1st 2 years are in OKC at the College of Medicine. Thus, 4 possible outcomes:

CoM: accept; SOCM: accept
CoM: accept; SOCM: reject
CoM: reject; SOCM: accept
CoM: reject; SOCM: reject

The last 2 are pretty much the same outcome.

EDIT: I should add that at this time the SOCM does not base their decision on academics, just on the personal interview and essay.

interviewing in january over february DOES NOT matter because everyone gets talked about on Feb. 22nd any way. 🙄

Either way, if you knock the interview out of the park they are going to want you. However, I do think that a higher percentage of people interviewing in Jan. get accepted than those interviewing in Feb. I have no data to support this, but it is what I have been told by people I consider reliable sources. It is hard to believe that there is absolutely no advantage to interviewing in the 3rd vs 4th round of interviews.

hey drmrl, after looking at the thread from last year, it seems some acceptances for people who interviewed in january were sent out before the feb review date. has this process changed this year?

Actually it has. In previous years they sent acceptances until 140 spots were filled then deferred everyone until after all the interviews concluded. This year they changed it to 120. Dr Baker told me this and said that most likely the 120 will be met by the November interviews or very early January.

Hey, I know we already sort of addressed the 4 photo issue... But I wanted to know if you sent in actual passport photos or just a photo that was 2" x 2"

I just sent 2" x 2" photos of me that followed all the passport photo guidelines EXCEPT I smiled. Several years ago when I had pictures taken for my actual passport I was instructed not to smile. But, I didn't want to send OU any pictures of me not smiling.

Hmmm..I'm not sure how to interpret this..

Does it bode well for January interviewees because there are more slots available? OR could it mean that more November interviewees (higher stats) were deferred and that we will have to compete with them..

Did you measure your eye and chin distance?

Hopefully, I'm not violating the TOS with this post...

I just had my wife take my picture and used this site to do the rest with my photo printer, which was completely free.

I don't think it affected the November interviewees. I doubt many received deferrals

So that just means that there are potentially 20 more slots available for January interviewees?! That seems like great news!...right? haha it seems too good to be true..

That would have to mean that there were fewer early round interviewees

I really don't think it opened up any more spots. It doesn't affect November interviews this or last cycle.

I'm confused...

Here's what I'm saying: 140 spots are generally taken up by the early round interviews (oct, nov). If this year it takes through oct, nov, and early January to reach only 120 spots then it must be due to either one of two options:

1) More early round interviewers were deferred until the final decision (in which case we, the January interviewees, would be competing against them)

2) There were fewer early round interviews

In either scenario, there would HAVE to be more slots available for January interviewees..the question is whether we will be competing among ourselves (hopefully) or against a greater number of Nov. deferrals..

I can't think of any other way this could go down..

The other way this goes down is that 120 spots are filled by the end of November/early January in either system. Since it does not effect their decision forNovember interviewees, nothing changes (Dr Baker did not say it would effect their decision early on, i.e. be more picky since there are less spots). What does change is that January interviewees wait longer to hear. I know someone that was accepted two years ago. She interviewed in early January and was waitlisted. When she interviewed she was told about 15 spots were left at that time. So for that cycle, 120 spots were filled at the end of November/Beginning January under the old system. Since it does not change decisions until after 120, November interviewees are unaffected.

I reread your post, 140 spots are not given out by November. Five interview days in OCT/NOV with 27 per day equals 135. Not everyone gets accepted.

Here's the deal. If you are in january...you have a slighter chance of getting in opposed to february UNDER THE CURRENT system. This is because the 120 spots are not full yet. However, I bet you that more people get outright rejected than wait listed BECAUSE of this: there are 40 spots to fill and they're including oct waitlist, nov waitlist, jan and feb waitlist. That's why more people will get rejected, in my opinion, than in years past. Less people should get wait listed. BUT I'm sure that some people will get outright accepted in january. 😀

There are also an additional 40-50 spots due to accepted individuals going to other schools. So, basically all of the Jan and Feb interviewees as well as those deferred in Oct and Nov are fighting for 80-90 spots. I think there may be some outright acceptances for some of the jan interviews, but very few, if any, because I know they have extended very near 120 acceptances thus far.

So, I understand why you all are talking about how many spots are left (which seems to be complete speculation and resulting in no definitive answers), but honestly, is it doing you any good? How about we remain positive for those who have interviews in January in February and give them helpful hints instead of killing their joy. Just a thought.

Thank you!! I'm sure it's better to interview early, but they wouldn't invite us if we had no chance at all.

I'm not trying to damper anyone's spirits or confidence. I'm not even going to this medical school, but just wanted to give updates since I know what's going on. geeze

I was told by Dotty Shaw today that there are 40 spots left and that all late interviews will receive either a deferred or denied decision and that at the end of the cycle they will have a meeting and choose the 40 students from the deferred list and make a waiting list from the remaining deferred applicants. They will tell you this on your interview day.

Seems very atypical….not to refute at all what you said because you talked to her and I do not doubt that she said what she said. I had also heard there were only 40 spots left and everyone was going to be deferred or rejected until the end of Feb. But thinking of the typical OU process, we interview, and then the interviewers go to the admissions committee and advocate or do not advocate for us based on our interview and application as a whole. How will this be done in this new process? Will they still do this right after the interview, defer you if your recommendation from the interviewer is favorable, and then come back to you a month and a half later (assuming you interviewed early or mid Jan)? I wonder if they are going to bring the interviewers back in and have them debate over candidates they interviewed over a month ago for those 40 spots (doubtful, at that point in time it is probably just up to the adcom reviewing you on paper again)? It almost seems like this new process makes the interview less important, considering we are all interviewing for a deferral not an immediate acceptance, but I will take what I can get that is for sure.

This really isn't a new process for OU, it's just they start the process earlier. In the past they started it with 20 spots left instead of 40

I think that they still talk about the applicants at the end of each interview day and from that meeting they come up with defer or deny and then rank you based on some sort of numbers+interview rating. When all the interviews are complete the best 40 are in and the other deferred are ranked and wait listed.

First med school acceptance! Kobe!
Interviewed 11/19ish, accepted 12/16
Go Sooners

Congratulations!

Were you originally deferred?

To be honest, I don't know what happened. They told me they would send me a response within 2 weeks, but for whatever reason I received the acceptance about a month later. Good luck everybody.

As far as I know, if you are deferred it will be until after all the interviews are concluded.

I just thought it was weird that the acceptance came so late. I can't believe you had to wait a whole month before hearing anything!

Hey guys, just got accepted at my #1 (Buffalo, my hometown), so someone can have my spot. No slight at all to OU, it is a fantastic school. Best of luck.

So, I currently live and Tulsa and have been accepted to OU. I'm curious if anyone that lives in the OKC area could give me some ideas where to look for housing. I'm married with a second kiddo on the way and I'm not feeling too good about living on campus (unless someone has some positive feedback). I like the feel of downtown and it's close to the campus but I don't know what rent/safety is like. My wife and I will be visiting soon and don't really know where to look aside from the downtown area.

I live in Edmond. It's kind of expensive, but not too far from OU, and very safe. On the other hand, if you like the feel of downtown, it may not be the place for you.

Anyone have feedback on their interview experience?

Have you looked at the interview feedback section? It's at the top of the page. Good luck in January.

I don't know if you're allowed to, but if you are allowed to and you would be willing, are there any first or second years that would be willing to share an excerpt of their first year schedule? I was just wanting to see what the scheduling looks like for OU. I apologize if that is something that is frowned upon! Thanks!! 🙂

I'm not sure if that is frowned upon or not, but looking at someone's current schedule would not be helpful to you, as the curriculum is being completely redone. So, your first and second year schedules would have little in common with the program that I am going through - my class is the last to go through the old curriculum. And considering that the curriculum is still being planned in the months running up to the start of the next academic year, you won't be able to see a detailed schedule for the new stuff either. Someone that has already interviewed may have an outline or list of the courses that you would take though.

They give you the tentative structure of the new curriculum with all of the courses that are planned for years one and two when you go interview day.

Now, I'm curious. What does the new schedule look like? Did they make it mention about required attendance? One maybe sizeable criticism of OU is that current students really weren't given the opportunity to be involved in the curriculum change process. One or two students get picked to be involved in the committee, but the rest of us were never asked for input. Hopefully you'll get something good.

It's systems-based. Hopefully, it'll be good. The MS-1s and MS-2s that did our tours were pretty jealous, anyway.

ETA: Nobody said anything about attendance.

I was under the impression that there would be more required attendances. If so, I'm not jealous at all.

As someone that firmly believes in attending class, I was wondering, does it bother you that attendance is not mandatory? Just curious because does it really affect you that others do not attend? Wouldn't it just free up the professors for the people that do show up?

I said that I wouldn't be jealous if they required more mandatory classes. I hardly ever go to a class unless it's mandatory. Personally, I choose not to get up and deal with the morning rush hour if I don't have to.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but has anyone else called/emailed to verify this? I am going to call tomorrow and talk to either Dotty or Lisa and I will let ya'll know what I find out. Please let me know if anyone has heard anything to verify or negate... Thanks!

Systems-based approach is the best: is increases medical retention. Residents who have been through this systematic approach tends to fare better on their boards as opposed to others. This info. comes from many doctors who have seen this difference in approach. Yay, to OU 🙄

I pretty much never attended class after the first test block, and I did pretty well. Listening to lectures isn't an efficient studying tool for me -- I do much better by reading about the material. If I attend a couple hours of lectures, I get maybe 20 minutes of actual listening in. I would be bugged by being forced to go to class, making me do something that doesn't actually enhance my learning. We're not all auditory learners -- why can't schools respect that? Actually the ability to homeschool was a huge plus about OU, imo. It gave me the ability to do well in my classes and still have a life outside of medical school. So if they start making people attend lecture, that plain sucks. My hunch is that the required attendance will be more in the form of discussion/pbl types of stuff, which might or might not be good.
