I think it probably is internally ranked. As in, they have their own preferences but won't let the people on the waitlist know...

This is my opinion, based on nothing more than common sense. I imagine they wouldn't want to repeat the whole process of re-reading everyone's application every time a spot opens up. They must have some applications that they like better than others, and just re-read the ones they are most interested in before offering an acceptance...

Can any of the Pitt med students comment on how much relative time is spent in lecture, as opposed to individual studying? A student at one of the other schools I am looking at mentioned that they spend a ton of time in lecture, which can be a good thing or bad depending on the person, and I was wondering if this is the case at Pittsburgh.

what i said about Pitt before...

I'm wrapping up my first year at Pitt. Assuming you prefer attending classes to recorded lectures online, you can plan on starting with full days (starts around 9 and ends between 2 and 4) 3 days of the week and half days the other ones in the beginning when you take anatomy. There's typically 1 pbl (1 - 2 hours) session a week or week and a half with a follow up 4-5 days after it. Once you get to second semester we get to go into the clinics one half day a week so three days become half days and two of them are open. If you don't go to classes (I don't), you can watch lectures at double speed, go to the required pbls once in a while, and study at your own discretion and do just fine.

While to my knowledge nothing is officially changing for next semester, there is a PittMed wide interest in shifting to P/F and possibly using shelf exams. In a school wide questionnaire, the vast majority of students wanted to make the change and the administration is very receptive, so I wouldn't be surprised if things change at some point.

Speaking to the idea of the school being competitive, I would make the argument that our classes are motivated, not competitive. Before you laugh at my lame sounding clarification, the first year class has been very supportive. We have groups who make study guides for each course and email it out. Another group makes online flashcards that everyone uses. I've received summary tables, helpful mnemonics, and useful sheets for completing history/physicals. This has been consistent throughout my first year and the amount of tips and study sheets the second years send us makes me believe it carries through the rest of our PittMed education.

Because I wasn't even at the school, I can't speak to things happening before me, but I can say that the culture of PittMed does not encourage cheating and I have never seen or heard of any cheating in my class. If you're strongly considering PittMed, come out to second look and meet us and your future potential classmates. You'll meet a lot of great people you'd enjoy spending the next four years with at a school with the resources to support any of your interests. That's my sales pitch 😛

So, I already sent a letter of intent a couple of weeks ago. If I haven't gotten the, "Are you still interested e-mail?" should I just hang tight? Or would it behoove me to call them and not-so-subtly hint that I'd love an acceptance?

don't worry I've called them already and the people who answer the phones really have no idea what's going on

I asked if they knew if there would be any more waitlist offers before May and she said "well, we're rolling admissions..." then I was like "um, ok, but how about the waitlist" "we're rolling admissions. that's all I know." THANKS!

To all accepted students: have you received any notice of merit based and/or need-based scholarships yet?

I know there was a post about this a few weeks ago, but just wondering if there was an update...

To all of you still on the waitlist, good luck!

Nothing yet. I contacted them to be sure all my materials had arrived and got an "early May" response.

Very frustrating... PhD applicants have to notify their programs of their final decision by April 15th, so my fiance will have to decide on her program before I know anything about financial aid from Pitt. 🙁

Oh well, most likely another spot for you guys. :luck:

Yeah, nothing yet. I would not expect them to come out with anything before the April 16 deadline, though...

Did you tell them about your situation? They might not care, but it wouldn't hurt to ask, especially if the alternative is just withdrawing based on incomplete info

For accepted students, there is now a Facebook group called the "University of Pittsburgh Class of 2014"

It's been up for less than a week and already has 25 members, so if you haven't joined yet, feel free to do so! We already have a housing discussion thread, and maybe someone can start a financial aid one...

Yeah, I'll probably have to do this. I'm going to see what Michigan offers tomorrow before calling them though. :xf:

For those of you who already know that you are going to Second Look, what events are you signing up for?? I was trying to figure out if I would rather do kickball (which I love) or the bus tour of Pittsburgh on Saturday. There seems to be some great events going on that weekend!

I signed up for kickball. The only thing better would have been dodgeball.

what?!?! now there's kickball involved?!?! pitt please accept me before 2nd look so i can show off my mad skillzzzz!!!!!!

 DITTO! Growing up my knickname was big foot because I was SOOO nasty at kickball. (and I'm a girl!)

Crap! I didn't know there was kickball. That's definitely too bad cause I have to work. I don't know that my kicking skills are up to snuff, but I was an expert dodger in my day.

What about for the specialty fairs? I think I put ortho:setting bones and surg: suturing as my top 2. I am also going to the SNMA dinners that weekend to network a bit.

Well, they probably won't let me in by then anyway(probably for the best so I don't make all the boys look bad) 😛

gmail put the invite in my spam folder, so if you didn't see it, you should check there

Does Pitt have a laptop requirement for new students?

No laptop requirement, but there's a lot of work that relies on computer access (e.g. recorded lectures, online literature search, ppt preparation, etc) so I'd strongly recommend bringing one. There are computers available in the health science library, but just about everyone has a laptop they bring as needed.

Anyone hear anything from Dr. Steinman yet???

I got an email from him several days ago that said, "
I am writing to let you know that he final approval of PSTP Selection Committee decisions will take place on the afternoon of April 7."

just withdrew...gluck to everyone on the waitlist!

anyone else interview for pstp and not receive the april 7th email?

So are you saying we need the mobility of a laptop, or just easy access to a computer? Just wondering if a desktop would be enough, or if should consider buying a netbook or something...

A laptop would mainly be for mobility. Every single PBL room has a computer. The libraries all have computers. The majority of the time you would probably have easy access to a computer, but since they're for everyone's use it's not guaranteed and less convenient. If you already have a desktop, a net book might be a good idea. I have a few friends who went that route and are happy to have something to carry around and work on that is quite cheap.

I did not receive this e-mail either.

Weird. I had been told that decisions would be made within three weeks of interviewing. So, after three weeks, I was obsessively checking my email when the email showed up saying decisions would be finalized April 7th. I assumed they told everyone since I figured everyone else was also was anxiously awaiting news after three weeks.

I guess we will all know in two more days. Sometimes it seems like the process of applying to medical school just never ends.

I'm in! I'm in! I'm in off the waitlist!!!!

🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I thought this day would never come!

Just withdrew. Pitt is awesome, but I'm going to the U of MN. Hope one of you gets the spot.

Pittsburgh just sent out the following email to waitlisted applicants (I assume to everyone on the list):

It is my understanding that you are currently a waitlisted applicant. If you are still interested in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the financial aid process is important, as many students in prior years have been offered places from our waitlist. Some students have inquired if the admissions staff review financial aid documents before offering someone a place in the Class of 2014-this does not occur at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. The financial aid department is only encouraging you to complete financial aid paperwork so that if you are accepted from the waitlist, our office can provide you with a financial aid award letter as timely as possible, to assist you in your decisions regarding where you will attend medical school.
For details on how to apply for financial aid, visit http://www.medadmissions.pitt.edu/financial-aid/ or http://zone.medschool.pitt.edu/Financial Aid/Pages/default.aspx . While the second site is more focused on current students, there is a variety of information found here that you may find helpful.
Also, you may be interested in searching some external scholarships our students have received! Visit http://zone.medschool.pitt.edu/Financial Aid/Pages/default.aspx and click on "Scholarship Notices" under "Helpful Information."
Sincerely,
Pamela J. Rikstad, MA
Director of Financial Aid
