I'm in the same situation, just checked my status page and no changes yet. Anyone think there's still hope at this point?

Same situation here as well. If its true what the previous poster said about the online status changing a few days before the actual letter comes out then I guess all we can hope for now is being waitlisted. A very disappointing day to say the least.

Well, no one has had a status change in the last few days, so that is a good sign. I would be more worried if someone's status changed today but mine didn't.

That's a good point. Although it seems like there's a pretty small representation from the Utah applicant pool on SDN. I think it's the same 10-15 or so of us that write most of the posts.

Additionally, and this is of course being hopeful, no one said it is a rule the status page will change before the letter is sent out. Especially if final decisions are being made this week, it's possible it will be updated when the last set of letters go out.

That's true. There's really no way of knowing exactly how things go down in the admissions office. And either way, I'm all for being hopeful with you! We'll find out soon enough. Hopefully it's good news.

Just found out that two people from my school recieved acceptances yesterday.

Can you see that you've been waitlisted on the status page? Or are acceptances they only thing you can see before snail mail?

Acceptances are it. I called the admissions office and they said ALL letters would be sent out by tomorrow. I also found out my letter was sent out last Thursday. My status has not changed, which means I'm probably rejected or waitlisted.

The status only changes if you have been accepted. Mine still shows submitted.

Just got the mail...waitlisted (UT resident)
I sure wish they'd let people know their place on the waitlist.

I was just wondering if anyone has heard of any new updates or news regarding the cigarette tax increase proposal. I am hoping that this goes through quickly enough that it can open up a few spots for those of us who are waitlisted.

The original reason that the bill was voted down were the earmarks ($1million annually to medical education at the U of U SOM). A revised version ended up passing and has been signed by Herbert, but it does not contain any sort of SOM earmark.

@#$*&%#@$ :bang::boom:

Where is Huntsman when you need him!

I was doing a bit more research and I guess it isn't as bad as I thought. The original bill failed in the house on March 4. Christensen submitted a substitution bill (H.B. 196 Substitute Tobacco Tax Revisions) that the house sent to the Governer on March 19. In this bill, last updated on March 15 it states: "21% of the revenue to be annually appropriated to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center for medical education at the University of Utah School of Medicine"

I have heard from the Governor that he is opposed to all tax increases period. However, it has been reported that he will not personally veto a bill just because it does propose a tax increase. This bill can pass without the Governors signature and some sources have suggested that he will not veto this bill 🙂

Here is a link to the proposed bill:

http://le.utah.gov/~2010/htmdoc/hbillhtm/hb0196s01.htm

However, Eric K. Hutchings has prepared a revision for submission that removes this funding from the University and instead suggests that "The following revenue generated from the tax increase imposed under this section during the 2010 General Session shall be deposited in the Cigarette Tax Restricted Account: (A) 5% to the Division of Services for People with Disabilities for respite care; and (B) 5% for the Aging Alternatives Program administered by the Division of Aging and Adult Services."

I don't know about you but this makes me want to get involved! What can we do to best promote the passage of this bill? The real question now is that if this bill passes, how would the university utilize the new funds. I can't imagine that the University will get a lot of money for this next years class to justify bumping back up the class size to the old standard of 102. Will they use the money to open up a handful of spots for this years class or will they use it for other items that they are in need of to amplify the education experience and spend the money on things such as new equipment, textbooks, faculty, etc.

Waitlisted....lame.

I wish we knew something like where on the waitlist we are. Number one, and you're basically in because someone always declines. Number 100, and it's as good as a no, since the list is already ranked. I guess I'm moving to California. Good luck you guys, really.

Thanks and congrats on having an acceptance to a California school! Do you mind if I ask which school?

Thanks, Western University (College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific). "Long name, amazing results." 🙂 I am happy because I chose it over some others but here is the problem . . . I have the option to be starting there in June, so I keep whatifing myself about Utah inviting me off the waitlist as I'm moving. The alternate list could be expected to move after 15 May right? Isn't that when students can only hold one spot?

Nice, congrats on having some options. Yes, May 15th is the date by which students with multiple acceptances are supposed to choose one and inform the others they won't be coming. So yeah, presumably waitlist movement should begin shortly after May 15th. For example, a friend of mine got into the U off the waitlist last year in late May. But one of the students that had lunch with us during the interview day at the U said that he got off the waitlist in August just one week before school began, and had already moved to Wisconsin to attend Medical College of Wisconsin. So it seems kinda unpredictable.

Uhh then you move back to Utah. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, the U can put you on the alternate list throughout the summer and give you a seat all the way up to when roll call is held in August.

utah3219, were you one of the lucky individuals who got accepted? or waitlisted like a lot of us?

Interesting. I knew the bill had passed, but I didn't know that the version signed gives no funding to the SOM. I find it highly suspicious that the bill was only passed after any trace of funding to the school was removed. In other words, the state really, really doesn't want to give any extra money to the medical school. So it makes no sense why the SOM keeps looking to the state as their only option for additional funding.

I heard IHC offered them a large sum to keep their class size up (an offer that was quickly rejected), but that's just a rumor. I don't see why looking to private sources for new money is that bad of an idea.

I found this article in the USA Today that talks about the U's budget woes. http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/2010-03-04-medical-schools_N.htm Apparently, they're not the only medical school with funding issues.

Rejected today. 🙁 Have to say I am a bit surprised I wasn't waitlisted at least. One of my interviews went really well and went for over an hour. The office staff had to come break up the interview bc it was going so long.

The Cigarette tax bill was passed into law yesterday (3/31/10). It had enough votes in the house to pass even without the governors signature. and thankfully the governor did not veto the bill. The tax increase takes affect July 1st.

As I was reading the bill, it looks like the U will get some money after all:

"21% of the revenue to be annually appropriated to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center for medical education at the University of Utah School of Medicine"

It has been suggested that this would provide around $40 Million into the states budget this coming year. That means that the U could potentially recieve around $8.4 Million. The U previously stated that they need $10 Mill to bring the class size back up to 102. Perhaps this is enough to bring it up 10-15 spots at least.

Could anyone post if they know anyone accepted to Utah from the Idaho pool? And if those who are accepted will be taking the spot?

Also, some advice: My Utah app says I am getting a chem minor from BYU. The class I need is a 4 credit useless class that I would have to take this spring. I don't want to take it, but I definitely would if I were to get in or even have a likelihood of getting in. Utah definitely frowns on those who make changes to their application after letters have come out, but in all honesty, it would be better for me to prepare for a different medical school by not taking it and working rather than taking it and wasting my time by not getting in to Utah. Any advice?

Thanks.

it really depends on how much you really want to go to Utah. You are correct in saying that Utah does frown upon applicants not doing what the said they would do. If You really feel that your time will be best used elsewhere and you have already been accepted to another medical school, I would send an email to the admissions office and give them a heads up that you won't complete your minor. I have found that if you let them know what's happening they are typically pretty cool with it.

Has everyone gotten their letters? I still have not gotten one. :/

You're in UT moving to California, and I'm in California moving to UT...wanna switch acceptance letters? LOL.

I've been accepted from the Idaho pool. I've accepted the spot for now and it's likely that my decision will stand. Just putting in a little thought trying to decide between here and another acceptance. Best of luck, waitlists are rough.

Accepted March 30th. Idaho applicant. I will be going.

I was also accepted from the Idaho pool.. I certainly plan on attending. Good luck to everyone on the alternate list. The worst part of this whole process is the waiting, but hopefully in the end it works out for everyone. Good luck all.

Thanks for all the Idaho applicants posting. From my knowledge, I know of four people accepted from Idaho, and all of you are most likely taking your spots. Which leaves four unaccounted for.

I am just trying to figure out if I need to put myself through a 4 credit class over spring semester to have a shot off the alternate list, or if I should just bag it since everyone invited to attend is already attending.

So if anybody else knows anything about other idaho applicants, please post! Thanks.

waitlisted, oos, non idaho. who else is in my boat?
