ahh, thank you again. well..... i was complete on 8/7/09, which was approximately a week after i received the secondary....
i don't know quite what any of that means in relation to your information...

my one roommate is doing a rotation in germany right now, so i can't quite ask her, but i seem to remember her saying that she interviewed there pretty late. december? i'm not sure. i'll have to ask the other girl when i get home.......

i don't really have a panic button anymore 🙄 ..... after my complete failure last year..... i just kinda roll with the punches ha

I don't think a December interview is late - not early, but not late either. So you should not be in a panic.

Interesting to look at last year's thread...I didn't tabulate it, but it seems like people who interviewed after early December had much less success than the earliest interviews...and of course, that makes sense for a rolling school.

Hey, good luck. We are all trying to read tea leaves, and it is pretty crazy to be paranoid in mid September for a process that just started a few weeks ago.

If any of you scheduled an interview for a Monday, do me a solid and reschedule it so I can come earlier than November 16th

woww I absolutely LOVED this school. such a great interview experience. Everyone there is so nice, Charlottesville is a perfect college town, the school really encourages exploring your own interests, whatever they may be. I met students who were traveling for most of 4th year doing global health projects!

I agree with what someone said earlier, these interviews are extremely informal and also quite short (only half an hour, and it's just a casual conversation so it goes by very quickly). good luck to everyone!

When did you interview?

They only do 6 at a time, so I'd say it's unlikely. Supposedly it's always 3 girls and 3 guys at an interview session.

Nope. We had 6 girls. The Assistant Dean was very excited about it too, and told us all how awesome we are.

Why is this thread so dead?

Anybody else who can report back on the interview day? Something more than the number of guys and girls and the lunch menu? I mean, that is neat to know, but can somebody throw us a frickin' bone here?

It seems like there aren't that many SDNers interested in, or having invitations for, UVA...if you look at the thread from last year, it is kind of similar in the small number of posters who kept that thread alive.

It's an amazing school. The new curriculum is systems-based, and the class of 2014 will be the first class to have it. We'll also have a new medical school building, complete with 16 standardized patient rooms, a mock ER, OR, ICU, and L&D suite. The classes will be largely small-group sessions, with introduction lectures being like 20 minutes instead of 2-hour blocks like it is now. It seems like an awesome curriculum.

There are three interviewers, each of whom interview 4/6 people. The interviews are staggered... a group of three will have interviews at 1:30 and 2:30, and the other group will have interviews at 2:00 and 3:00. At 3:30, there's a financial aid session, which I couldn't stay for, so I couldn't tell you much about it.

The staff is all very friendly and accommodating. The interviews were very conversational. It's a great interview experience.

from my sdn observations/stalking, it would appear that uva hasn't sent out any IS interview invites yet... has anyone from VA gotten one???

just trying to see how paranoid i should be.... 😉

We had 2 in-state people at our session.

Great report - thanks for the detail.

Were all the applicants in your session truly "awesome" or do you think that was just standard patter? Did you get to talk to any of the other applicants, or learn anything about them, to confirm it?

Good luck, but it doesn't sound like you need it.

One additional thought: I do think that the majority of interviews up to this point have been for OOS applicants, and it makes sense because they have to interview far more OOS applicants to get that 40 to 45 percent OOS enrollment, and they are competing with all the other top schools for those candidates, so it makes sense that they get those folks in as early as possible - so your theory is not all wrong.
My interview was all OOS except for me. The applicants at the interview seemed like a really good bunch of people. If I had to rate them on a scale based on my other interviews I'd say they were in the top 1/3. Then again, I didn't know any of theirs scores or GPAs and I'm not on an adcom, so I don't know the best ways to judge applicants.

Well, we had a couple women who had been or were going to be Fulbright Scholars, which I thought was pretty cool. We had some doing research, some had done extended work in free clinics, etc. Most of us were out of school; I think two were seniors in college now. Any one of them I would enjoy having as a classmate; they were all friendly and cheerful and did have some impressive accomplishments. Whether we were all awesome by everyone's standards is up for debate, but it was still nice to hear. And, of course, we didn't talk to Dean Canterbury. We spoke with the Assistant Dean instead, so it might've just been her take on things, rather than something that's said every interview session. Still, I was mighty impressed by her memory; she told us all where we were from and what we majored in as well as one highlight of our application.

Thanks 🙂

Hey guys, for those of you who have interviewed or who have been invited to, how late after getting your complete email did you get an interview invite? Thanks!

Took about 3 weeks for me. Complete around 8/25ish got an invite 9/14

Interview today. I really liked it. It was really laid back, and the food was awesome! If anyone has any questions about what to expect, PM me. 🙂

Just fyi, if you interview before Oct. 15th, they'll send you a decision letter on the 16th. I thought that was really cool of them.

I'm thinking that UVA might be the happiest place to spend 4 years for med school.

is there a status page online or do we need to call them to get our status?

Hey guys, I'll be in C'ville sometime in the next two weeks. I haven't heard from them since being complete early August. Do you think I should call/email them to ask if they could decide on my file? Which way would be preferable? Call or email? Thanks!

After receiving an interview invitation from Boston University I emailed 5 other schools in the northeast that I hadn't heard from to try and coordinate interviews. 2 of the 5 have offered me interviews for the same week, so I'd say it's worth a shot. I think it's fine to contact them by phone or email, although I'd maybe suggest calling since you're only two weeks out (I was contacting ~1 month in advance). Either way, I think it's unlikely that the request will hurt your chances. Good luck!

Are in-state applicants getting a lot of invites/rejections lately? I was complete in mid-August and I've heard nothing, but I believe I heard that UVA does interview a little later than some of the other Virginia schools.

Applying here early, as in early July when the secondary was released, was the key for UVA (VCU and EVMS, too). Not sure where you heard that UVA interviews later than the other VA schools - that is not the case as far as I can see.

At my interview, there were 2 instaters (out of 6 total peeps). Anecdotally, it seems like there have been more OOS interviewees than IS, but to be sure, plenty of VA residents have been interviewing.

The premed adviser told me that a UVA interview may come after VCU and EVMS. I have interviews at VCU and EVMS, but I'm still waiting for UVA. As you wrote, it seems they're interviewing more OOS applicants right now.

same here... I was complete early Sept, and have invites for VCU and EVMS. In-state, average stats with very strong ECs, LORs, and top 3 Ivy. Hoping UVA comes through!

Maybe it's different for IS people, but I got an invite at VCU after (a while after, actually) I got an invite at UVa.

Actually, I experienced the same thing as you, and I am instate.

I got an interview invite from UVa on Aug 3, and VCU a few weeks after that.

And my EVMS invite was the last one of the 3.

I am OOS and complete since August 2nd week. Did not hear anything and when called they say it is still under review - is this good? As they review do they send rejections if no chance for interview?

uva where are you old friend?? 🙂 dying to hear from ya.........
anyone have any news as of late??

Nothing here. I'm a current UVa student. I'm getting a bit nervous.

Again,

It has been disputed by some, but my premed adviser said that UVA would respond a bit later than the other VA schools. Yes, I know some in-staters got interviews already, but I would imagine they have exceptional stats or some other reason that gave them early consideration. My stats are good, not great, but definitely within UVA's boundaries. Therefore, I can only postpone hitting the panic button.

my interview is in couple weeks and haven't heard back from student hosts ...
sent them two emails but nothing.. should i just book a room?
anyone have any luck staying with a student?

Hey everyone I'm a first year here and came from The Ohio State University down here and am having a great time! The social aspect of things has been great but everyone works really hard too. If you have any questions I can answer them or point you in the right direction if I don't know - which may be the more common response. Just for reference I know people who interviewed all through the cycle and were accepted, one as late as mid-February so don't get too hung up on when you're coming in and just try and be yourself.

howabout - I'm not sure why you haven't heard from anyone...the program is run by first year's and we had exams last week so that might explain it. If you don't hear soon message me with your contact info and I can get someone to connect you with a host. My house is definitely part of the program so maybe you'll end up with us.

Good luck and don't spend too much time studying/working in your last year before medical school!

Just keep pestering them. I had to send them like 4 emails before I finally got a host.

I heard back from them, but someone who interviewed with me did not. It was second years organizing it back when I interviewed, but based on MightyDuck's comment, it might've switched to first years.

Anybody know for sure if UVA sends out fat and thin envelopes, or does one size fit all? Anybody find this on last year's thread? Or any current students who can comment?

Anybody?

Jeez, this has to be the deadest thread for any of the "top" 30 med schools...what gives?

I don't know. Intuition tells me it'll be fat if it's acceptance? 😕

You're right, though. UVA has so many OOS apps, is a really great school, and it only has 5 pages on this thread? 👎

UVA is the best kept secret on SDN.

UVA is the school I'm most looking forward to hearing from.

I'm quietly biding my time. I figure I'll get something in the mail by next week.

UVA is the best kept secret on SDN.

Seems that way, doesn't it?

So many instaters complaining they haven't gotten invites, and the handful of OOS applicants who are highly interested - there is far more OOS interest for UVA on SDN than instate interest.

Sure wish I knew what kind of envelope to expect...

I got bored and looked through last year's thread. No indication of letter size. Good thing it only takes a few seconds from seeing the letter size to actually reading it.

I wonder how long intra-city mail takes. They're sending decisions on Friday 10/16, right? Maybe I'll get it 10/17?

I really, really hope they lied to us and actually mail them out on the 15th. That Sunday in the middle of transit really messes things up. I hate the government working hours/days. I thought it was through rain, sleet, etc but not on Sundays?
