Ooo, the guy interviewing me, Dr. Bernet, is a psychiatrist. Hope he's not too hard on me :scared:

hahaa

anyone else find Judy from the admission's office to be the greatest ever. she was so amazing. definitely the best thing about Vandy

totally agree. she was so nice to me! she walked me to my interview and all.

Good luck fellas. Time for me to unsubscribe =(

i dont know what they are paying her but its not enough. i have been to some schools with cold admissions offices, and the niceness of vandy's made a huge impression upon me.

Hahaha well I'm glad you all like Judy. She is, as you all say, totally awesome. She knows most of us first years by name by now which is pretty impressive, I think. And she loves doing what she does, so I'm glad it's giving people a good impression of our school- she definitely impressed me when I was there.

On the other hand, surely you guys love other things about Vandy 😉

What does vandy look for exactly? I was practically rejected immediately there but got invites at columbia, siniai, and duke

I'm confused. I love vandy *sighs* Good luck to you kickin' cool catz.

Sorry for everybody with rejections. 🙁

So is anybody else that interviewed recently just trying to forget about Vandy for a while? My interview was less than spectacular and they're probably going to take until almost Thanksgiving to get back to me, so I'm not holding my breath...

If you don't mind me asking, what happened at the interview that left such a bad taste in your mouth?

I'm going there next week, but even if it goes great, I'm going to try to forget about it because like you said, we probably won't hear anything for a while.

Hey guys!

I'm taking a 5 minute break to tell you all of something I heard around the past week or so (might be old news, but I just heard!). Turns out this year's Step 1 average was absurdly high- I don't know for sure if it's the highest in the country (schools don't all disclose that data), but let's just say I'd be totally astonished if it wasn't in the top 3. We always have a crazy high average, but it seems to be getting higher every year (so yeah, no pressure on my class). Anyway, figured it wouldn't hurt to tell you all for when you're choosing between Vandy and a bunch of other fancy med schools. One can make an argument that the average Step 1 score is not in any way related to the med school and yadda yadda, but I choose to believe that the teaching has SOMETHING to do with it (otherwise all of Wash U's 40-on-the-MCAT posse would be getting 260s without breaking a sweat).

Yet another reason to come here if you get in! :luck::luck:

I was wondering what mode of transportation you guys used to get from the airport to an hotel/residence? Also, I signed up for host. How long should I wait until I schedule a hotel? I am interviewing close to Halloween(sp?) so idk if the rooms get filled in this city or not. The ones they give out in thier info are within walking distance to the med campus correct?

Thanks for any comments

What I did was book a room at the Guest House Inn, since you can cancel without penalty as long as it's at least 48 hours notice. My host wasn't within walking distance, but he and his roommate gave me a ride and walked me to the admissions office, which was really nice. I had an amazing time when I was there, and the Children's Hospital is absolutely stunning, so don't miss that! 🙂

take the shuttle they suggested in the email

also yea, that USMLE average is pretty crazy, i think it has to be the highest in the nation. i did sit in on 2 classes and an elective and the professors seemed great. but there's also a 2 month span to study for the test, which probably has a huge impact on it as well

Where did you guys stay for the interview (other than student host)?

Any recommendations? :scared:

Unfortunately, it was Parents' Weekend when I went, so hotels were very expensive and very limited. I stayed at Best Western Music Row. It was about 5 minute drive and pretty nice. Downside, I think it houses people auditioning for music gigs, so there's a lot of bad guitar playing and noise making at night.

i havent heard ANYTHING from vanderbilt since my amcas was complete on 09/1 (July MCATer) and its the only school that I'm technically not complete at it, should i assume a pre-secondary rejection or is there still a slight chance of receiving a secondary??

hahah and almost exactly 12 hours later after posting i get a snail mail pre-secondary rejection from vandy...(relatively) harsh-worded rejection letter 🙁..sucks..oh well..good luck to everyone else!

one more day, everyone! so which person in the admissions committee calls if you get good news?

It's Dr. Zic, who's actually the Assoc Dean I believe.

yup

but i did read through last year's thread and there were people who got accepted w/o a phone call. so don't be down if you don't hear something tomorrow, but i will probably be down

Sigh, why can't they be consistent? I'm gonna be on a plane, so my phone will be off. If they do call, I hope they leave a message.

I interviewed on oct.1st

Do you think they'll have made a decision on my application by tomorrow?

Just trying to figure out how nervous i should be about tomorrow...

not sure. they started interviewing everyday since mid august, so thats a lot of people to go through

I was told it was going to take two months, and I have no idea whether that is actually accurate or they just don't want us to bug them.

yea that's kind of what i was thinking

they told us 6-8 weeks at the interview so i guess i have a lot of waiting to go

and i don't think december's that late - vanderbilt has a relatively big class so they'll accept about 300 people, right?

i interviewed 9/28 and was told my file would be reviewed around the 30th of oct...so sit tight

Small class, barely over 100 I think. Maybe about 110? They also only accept a little over 30% of the interviewees....

Oh my gosh, I am sooooo feeling the same way...butterflies all night tonight and all day tomorrow.

I'm really hoping that at least some people will be getting a (615) area code call!!!! Imagine the relief those lucky few will feel!

I'm kinda glad I have midterms to keep my mind *sort of* occupied...good luck to all the vandy applicants!!! 🙂

oh god, i hate ppl telling me area codes. im gonna try to keep busy tomorrow but g luck everyone!!!

who said they call? i thought they only called to ppl who get full merit scholarships.

I guess I'm glad that I won't be expecting anything this week or next. I interviewed in the second week of September. If I get a call or letter, I can't possibly guess when it'll happen so I don't have to go nuts thinking and sweating about it 24/7. 🙂

nope. go see the 2008-2009 vandy thread. a lot of people that were accepted in the first wave got phone calls from the associate dean congratulating them.

btw they will leave a message...some people in that thread missed the call but had a voicemail. that's what would happen to me if I would be lucky enough to get a call...I'll be drinking heavily tomorrow out of either celebration or woe haha

Just a note to kinda calm people down. I had two friends get accepted on Oct. 15th two years ago by Vandy. Their phone calls were later at night, not during business hours.

hopefully good news tomorrow. pretty nervous. vanderbilt is my top choice school 🙂

Hey folks!

Ok, so to address some of the stuff mentioned in here...

1) Last year, most people who got in received a phone call. Dean Zic usually tries to call everyone. If you don't get the call, don't panic, there was probably some logistical issue at play. It's not just for merit scholarships though- that's another phone call, way later in the game.

2) I believe he calls from a private number- probably from home, judging from the time he called last year- so look for that rather than the (615).

3) Yes, if you don't pick up, he leaves a voicemail. He did that for me. And no, it's not a fake voicemail, like "Hi, just call me back thanks". He says his name, that he's calling from vanderbilt school of medicine, congratulations, he'd like to invite you to join the class of 2014, you'll get something in the mail, and btw second look weekend is sometime in april, congrats again, let me know if you have any questions.
Yes, my voicemail is still saved on my phone.

4) He tends to call after business hours to make sure people are home, so don't start panicking at like 10 am cause that wont do you any good. I'm guessing it'll be around 6 or 7 tomorrow, but it may be later than that.

5) Don't worry if you feel like you didn't grasp any of what he said- the relevant stuff will be in the mail you get at home, which should be coming within the next week or so.

6) Last year I interviewed in the beginning-ish of Sept and my interview day was one of the last to be notified on Oct 15, I think. So I'm guessing if you didn't interview a month ago at the latest, you might not find out until the second wave of calls.

I think that covers most of it. Good luck guys!!!! Let me know if you have any questions- first years have intersession right now so we're nice and relaxed.

Good luck to everyone hoping for good news tomorrow! And make sure your cell phone battery is charged 🙂

Flying into Nashville tomorrow for my interview Friday. Good luck to everyone expecting news!

Has anyone interviewed at Case, CCLCM and Vanderbilt?

If so, how did your experiences differ at three schools? :scared:

hmm i didn't interview at cclcm, but i did do case and vandy. vandy's interview day was a lot smaller - there were only 4 of us there. it felt a lot more personalized. case, on the other hand, had like 20 of us there. i felt like we were being herded around on our tour 🙂 interviews at both schools were really conversational, and all the interviewers were nice.
