interviews in december/january are probably filling right now, but that's just a guess... anyone recently submit the secondary who could be more precise?
if i were you i'd try to get it out ASAP since they are definitely rolling.
 
I sent in my secondary about 2 weeks ago and the earliest interview date was early December.
 
interviewed 9/8, but still haven't received anything from vanderbilt yet.....

LET hasn't said anything yet, so I'm going to represent the VMSI's in congratulating those of you who received the GREAT news recently! I don't know how you guys will be, but I still remember when Dean Zic called and what I was doing at the moment. If any of you have questions, let one of us know!

For those who haven't heard anything, please don't be discouraged. My philosophy last year was no news is good news. Until you have a final decision in your hand, which at this point is some kind of a rejection, you still have a chance! Although I don't necessarily agree with a previous poster about Vanderbilt accepting a ton of waitlisted applicants, I do want to remind all of you that applicants on the "WL" are continually reviewed with new applicants throughout the year. I know of several people who were placed on the "WL" and then were accepted a month or two later (in February or so).

they told us a third of the class was taken of the WL last year. is that not true?

I don't know the exact numbers, so if you heard this statistic from the Admissions Office during the interview day, I would believe it. Even if a third of our class was taken off the "WL" last year, the majority of that most likely happened while first decision acceptances were still given out. Basically, Vanderbilt's WL is more like a Hold list, where interviewees in that group have not been outright accepted nor rejected; but are continually reviewed with new interviewees. Personally, I have only spoken to a few classmates who were accepted post-5/15.
 
does anybody know the acceptance increment? how often do they send out a barrage of phone calls?
 
Has anyone who interviewed Sept 8 and onward, received any word (acceptance or otherwise)?
 
Does Vandy have 100% lecture style teaching?

I can't seem to find the teaching style on their webpage.. Can anyone enlighten me please? :scared:
 
I'll do my best!

Vandy has a whole number of teaching styles that they use at the same time. Basically, we have lecture every morning, and that's the "traditional" aspect of things, as well as lab every couple of days. Depending on the block that's going on, we have different amounts of PBL- basically, in the biochem/cell bio/genetics block that we just finished, we had PBL once a week, but I think in the anatomy block we're about to start there will be no "formal" PBL classes (mainly an issue of time, I think- they don't want to overload us with required stuff when we already have so much lab time). We also have a class called "Patient, profession and society" which is basically our bioethics/professionalism/"art of healing" type class. For that class, we have a number of teaching methods: we meet 2 hours a week in a small group, and we work in pairs with a chronic disease patient (who we'll follow throughout the 4 years), and we work either individually or with someone else shadowing a doctor of our choosing.

Sooo yeah. Hopefully that made sense. Basically, they try to have as many different types of teaching as they can so everyone can learn the way they learn best. Obviously the basis there is lecture time, but they do try to give us other stuff to do.

thanks LET! how many hours of structured learning (lecture + PBL + lab etc) does that translate to on a given day? seems like a fair bit of class time (depending on the block)
 
i sat in on 2 classes and an elective. i was impressed at how comfortable students were with the faculty as well as each other during their elective.
 
Yeah, I sat in on both the MI and MII classes and really liked the environment. Although the MI students were waiting for fall break to start and the class wasn't very serious... one of the doctors on their oncology panel was rocking a "CANCER SUCKS" shirt, haha.

First of all congratulations to everyone who has gotten the call from Dr. Zic!! I am a first year at Vanderbilt and have absolutely loved my time here. I didn't know med school could be so fun, as nerdy as that sounds.

If you go to this link, https://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/medschool/portal/login.php you can click on the first year website and look at the full class schedules there to get a feel for the time involved. In the first block I found I had plenty of time for studying while balancing the rest of my life. We'll see how things work out in our next block.

Keep in mind that the lectures are completely optional, but the labs and small group sessions are mandatory. All the lectures are both recorded as a podcast and videotaped. The best parts about this system for me was the fact that the powerpoints were also available with the video and the ability to speed up the lecture to 2x speed if the speaker is slow. Also, if there was something you missed in lecture, you have the ability to go back to the video and catch what you missed.

The first block of classes is Molecular Foundations of Medicine, which is a combination of cell biology/genetics/biochem and all other things molecular. We had four tests two weeks apart which allowed a nice transition to the volume of material presented in med school. It allowed me to try some new study methods without the risk of bombing a test that was 50% of my grade and work some things out before anatomy starts which is more intense.

One final thing I have been impressed with are the facilities available to students for studying. The library is great with a combination of study rooms and individual desks. Light Hall, where you will have classes, has tons of rooms with whiteboards, a room with about 20 desks for quiet study, and the lab we use for histology/path which is equipped with about 15 huge flatscreens for viewing slides and open 24 hours. You will never run out of places to study.

Anyone took Grayline shuttle from the Medical Center to the airport want to share how long it took?

My flight is at 5:15pm and I'm concerned that I might miss that.

So, the day will end @ 3:45pm and then I guess the shuttle will leave the Medical Center @ 4:05pm?

I interviewed 8/20 and have not heard anything. I got my fingers crossed too pal :xf:

My letter was postmarked 10/19. I live in Nashville so it got here pretty fast.
 
i havent gotten any mail in the last week. like ANY. no phone bills, electricity bills, cable bills, automobills
 
This is a question for current students:

I was accepted to Vandy last week (!!! very excited about this!), but the cost factor is really starting to get to me. I LOVE Vanderbilt but 60 grand a year is certainly a hard pill to swallow, especially compared to my cheap state school. It just depresses the hell out of me that I might have to give up my Vandy acceptance.

Which is all to say...how good do you think their fin aid is? Are most kids getting aid of some kind, or do you think a lot of people are paying in full? My family income is about $150 grand per year, and my EFC for undergrad was 50 grand/year. I know it's hard for you guys to say as students, but I would really appreciate a glimmer of hope that I might be able to actually attend Vandy next year!

I'm not a current student, but my buddy is a first year and he said that EVERYONE in his class got some sort of scholarship, anywhere from $2000 to full. Hopefully a student can chime in and say a bit more about it.

yeah i remember them saying this at our interview day financial aid presentation. daisy - if you still have that interview day brochure they gave us, they have a whole page of financial aid stuff in there.

Daisy-

I am in about the same situation as you family wise and received about $5K of need based plus the $2k that everyone gets. They only raised tuition $1000 last year but gave everyone a $2000 scholarship. From what I have heard the amount of aid usually goes up from year to year since you will have more debt, but we will see.

Just wanted to point out that Vandy is also one of the few remaining schools with tons of merit aid as well. A number of my friends and I received at least some merit money. In my case, Vandy turned out to be cheaper than my state school would have been, so it was a no-brainer.
 
For those of you who are attending Vandy, or went to an interview. How is Nashville? Im from California so Im somewhat "curious" about the south.
 
anyone get into vandy this year without getting a call from the dean? i have a letter waiting for me at home, but im at work! news is- thin envelope... probably not a good sign.. thoughts? :idea:
 
if you didn't get a call and you got an envelope, it's cuz ure waitlisted/on hold and you will be reviewed for an acceptance from now on until the end of the cycle.

There is no set time frame. Everytime the committee meets, they'll re-review you plus the latest set of interviewees' applications, and decisions will be made. Your application will continued to be reviewed at each meeting until you get accepted, or the season ends and you get rejected.
 
I totally got a weird letter, I'm pretty sure I'm on hold. They don't say I'm waitlisted. They said they can't extend an "immediate invitation" to me so they'll keep considering my app thru the cycle.

Ahhh...limbo 🙄

it's all good though, i heart my state school 🙂 congrats again to everyone who got in!!!

feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that's their version of waitlist. Doesn't it sound fancier/nicer the way they put it than "you're waitlisted"? I got the same one, I think, and that's how I took it anyway. I'm expecting a rejection in the long run, but I guess I'll sit on the waitlist...
