Absolutely. I don't know what issues you have with LSU, but keep in mind that the view that you have of MCV is primarily based on the minimal interaction you've had on the interview trail and perhaps with current students. Your knowledge of LSU may also be thusly limited.

Until you matriculate at a school and spend a significant amount of time there, you know very little about the scope of issues affecting students. Although I only have direct experience with this school, I suspect most, if not all, medical schools suffer from the same kinds of political and bureaucratic challenges. You'll probably have a very similar experience in either place, but at LSU you'll come out with half the debt.

👍 Thanks. This does put stuff in perspective, and it's nice to hear stuff from an actual med student at another school.

Btw, my main issue with LSU is that it's in New Orleans and I want to leave Louisiana. That's just about it. The bureaucratic hospital stuff and students seeming kind of unhappy are secondary - that can happen anywhere.

I wanted to leave Virginia. I only had one acceptance, though, so I didn't face the same difficult decision. Now that I'm here, and almost done with M2, it's clear that med school goes by so fast it doesn't really matter all that much. In a couple of years, provided step 1 goes ok, I'll be able to go pretty much anywhere.

And so will you!

That's the attitude I'm currently moving towards and beginning to accept. If I do well, I can go anywhere else. Maybe I can get some away rotations, too.

Without a doubt. Fourth year is pretty much wide open, and doing away rotations is easy, and if you want to train in a strong program in another city, pretty important.

I'm a 4th year now (I hear about where I matched tomorrow- wish me luck).

While I have absolutely loved MCV, the students in my class and the education it has given me, I think you would have similar opportunities at other schools. Ironically, when I went up for my 2nd look at Hopkins, that day there were only 2 students there, me and a student from LSU. So clearly LSU can open similar doors as MCV.

While I would love to tell you that there is a huge difference between MCV and LSU, I know that the difference is probably relatively small in the grand scheme of things. I'd recommend you do second looks at both places.

Twice the debt is a lot but if you are going to be completely miserable at LSU perhaps the cost is worth it.

metallica, if i end up at vcu you better go there too i dont care how much debt you'll be in :meanie:

good luck tomorrow Instatewaiter :xf::luck:

Does anyone know what proportion of the waitlist (and more specifically if possible: the in state waitlist) ultimately gets accepted?

Or another angle: what proportion of the entering class typically comes from the waitlist?

I've heard similar figures for EVMS, but not for VCU...

could you pm me/post here what those figures are for evms (portion of WL in-state people that get in/portion of class that comes off in-state wait-list)? i'm waitlisted both places, and it's pretty frustrating b/c i could be looking at astronomical tuition otherwise if i go to the school i just got into.

What are the results of the match today?? Hope everyone was happy.

While the results are not yet posted so I don't know everything, we got an E-mail from the dean that listed some accolades and I know what I have heard from my class:

- 97% match rate (nationally- 93%)
- 3 matched Urology (including MGH-aka harvard)
- 6 matched ENT
- 7 matched ortho
- 9 matched Gas
- 13 matched Rads
- 14 matched EM
- 1 student matched into Cardiothoracic surgery (10 positions nationwide)

Some of the places that people matched off of the top of my head- Duke, Hopkins, Hopkins-Bayview, MGH (harvard), Beth Israel Deaconess (harvard), Yale, Chicago.

Wow! That's pretty impressive. Great job guys!

bump..
anyone have the data for OOS as well? Thanks in advance!

I've been waiting since October...
I really liked the school when I visited, so even though I still an interview coming up (canada runs a later cycle than US), I'm hoping for an eventual acceptance at VCU.

Anyone know if the waitlist and rejection list will be going out at the same time, and any idea when it would happen?

I'm pretty sure everyone at this point who isn't accepted is placed on the waitlist. It's supposed to happen in late March.

I've heard that some get rejected, perhaps those who are too far back on the wait list and don't have a shot of being accepted from it. But the w-l should be out next week.

Anyone know why the second look day is for URM students only?

When did you get the invite for the 2nd look? I am URM, but I haven't received a decision yet (awaiting the WL email sometime next week).

I believe it's because it is hosted by SNMA. I haven't yet decided if I am going since I will most likely be withdrawing soon.

I got the invite in the mail, about two weeks after my acceptance

Since the waitlist should be out pretty soon, is there going to be a separate thread for all the wait listers? I think that might be a good idea so we can get a picture about w-l movement.

For the list, perhaps we can do something like this:

Waitlisted:

In State (name; interview date; GPA/MCAT; accepted date)
1.
2.
3.

Out of State (name; interview date; GPA/MCAT; accepted date)
1.
2.
3.

..and then have people fill it out chronologically by interview date so that it's easier to read.😀
Good luck to everyone waiting, here's hoping we all end up on the waitlist and not the reject list :luck:

Just got off the phone with admissions... No set date for the alternate list to be released, but they are shooting for some time next week. The list will be broken down into IS and OOS lists, and offers will be extended according to the withdrawls of currently accepted students (i.e. - 5 people withdraw and 2 are OOS, then only 2 OOS will be pulled from WL). The WL is ranked (but we knew that already), and I got the impression that they don't match for sex, URM, etc like EVMS.

Hope that helps a little!

I am quoting lawdoc's figures from an earlier post.

For the 2008 entering class, they accepted 205 IS for 111 spots. So it is still a vague estimate of how many people are accepted off the waitlist because some people may have already withdrew and their spots filled. Hope that helps...seems somewhat promising 🙂

Based on previous years, does anybody know if ppl are accepted off the wait list as soon as it is formed?

Hey guys. I was just wondering if any of the actual medical students who'd been to the second look weekend in the years past could elaborate on it. What exactly do you guys do? Was it beneficial? I got the invite in the mail but I already have plans for that weekend and I'm not sure if I should skip them to go down to MCV.
Btw, I'm 90% sure that's where I'm head and don't really need any convincing.
Thanks!

Here's to the WL coming out tomorrow. The sooner it's made, the sooner it can start moving :xf:

Is it coming out today?

I called and they told me there is no set date yet for when it's coming out but I'll just hope it's late-march like it says on the status. I couldn't help but notice you also interviewed at UVM. How did you think it compared to VCU?

31st is the latest of march lol. let's hope it's tmr at least.

Since it's been 2 weeks after March 16th, there could be some acceptances immediately after the wait list is formed to fill up spots for those who didn't accept. Just speculating as usual lol

Undoubtedly true!

One thing I learned from VCU...don't expect to hear anything on any of the deadlines...frantically checking my email those days, I always find nothing....but that's still better than a rejection!:xf:

You're not alone!

I want to email Dr. MWC to see if the AL is formed but after that embarrassing situation before when I asked her about my chances, I really can't afford to do anything else that might annoy her.

No email as of now but my status changed to alternate list. Now the real waiting begins...

EDIT: Just got the email at 3:08pm PST

email 6:17pm, it said that I am a "relatively strong candidate" is this what everyone got?

Yep, that's exactly what mine said.

I wonder how quickly we can ask where we stand, in general. I know they won't tell us exactly, but it would help to have sort of an idea..

Got the waitlist. Asking for consideration even tho i'm accepted elsewhere. 😉

do you think it helps our chances if we aren't accepted anywhere else? and that we indicate that we aren't accepted from another school?

+1. I wonder if it helps or hurts to say you've been accepted elsewhere but still want to be considered.

Waitlisted as well. I feel a bit relieved though. I wonder how many students are WL for OOS.
