-Hey, I'm a 1st year right now, hope this helps:
What are the clinical opportunities at Wayne for MS1s and MS2s?
-Honestly, that's what your 3rd and 4th years are for. Focus your first two years on learning your basic science well. But there are plenty of free clinics in Detroit that lots of students volunteer at.
What do you like best about Wayne?
-So far everyone I've met in my class is really friendly (of course every class has its share of douchebags). Also, being from MI, it's nice to be close to home. Detroit is a great place to live and to learn medicine- some of the hospitals down here allow you to gain a lot of practice (mostly 3rd and 4th yr stuff).
What don't you like?
-Administration is kind of a pain in the ass (they can be slow at times). Some of the lectures/classes are a bit disorganized (but everyone still survives so I guess they can't be that bad).
What unique programs does Wayne have that are not present at other medical schools?
-Check the website.
I have heard great stuff about the DMC, how does the lottery process work for clerkships? Is your placement purely by luck, or are your grades taken into account?
-From what I have heard, in the next few years they are trying to move most of the rotation sites to Henry Ford (which is OK with me because everyone says its better than the DMC anyways). The relationship between WSU and DMC is strained at the moment, hopefully it will get better. But there are plenty of hospitals in the area (Beaumont, St. John's, Henry Ford, VA, etc.) that students have the opportunity to rotate through. DMC will be getting a lot of the new MSUCOM students that just got to the D.
For placement, you rank your top choices and they will try to get you where you want to be. Of course there are only a limited number of spots at each rotation site, so you may not get your first choice.
During clerkships are you restricted to one hospital in the DMC or do you rotate around?
-They are moving towards doing all your rotations at one hostpital. This allows for continuity, and makes it easier for the administration at the hospital as well. However, your elective rotations you can choose to do at other hospitals (pretty much anywhere that agrees to take you).
What advice do you have for students interviewing at Wayne?
-Make sure you express your interest in attending WSU and learning medicine in Detroit (if you don't want to go here give up your interview spot to someone that does).
I made sure that my interviewer understood that Wayne was my first choice (and I guess it worked).
I have heard that Wayne is a fairly conservative school, is this true?
-Ummm...
What are the research opportunities for Wayne students, is this a focus for Wayne, or are they more interested in clinical training?
-Wayne is a big research school, so yes it's a focus. If you are interested in doing research I'm sure that there is something here that you can find. It's just a matter of taking some initiative and e-mailing profs. Plus, there is also Karmanos down the street if you're into that sort of stuff. And the clinical thing, noone cares till your rotation years.
What do you like to do for fun while attending Wayne? Outdoor activities, indoor, etc...?
-Sleep is always nice. But outdoor stuff there is Belle Isle downtown and plenty of stuff in the suburbs. To be honest, when I'm not studying I'm either sleeping or partying.
Any interview advice?
-Have fun! And don't stress out too much. The last thing you need is grey hair.
Also, get one of your friends to practice with you. There is interview feedback somewhere on SDN, get questions and practice, practice, practice with your friends (preferebly one who will bust your ass).
Feel free to PM with questions.
