Biiiiggg sigh of relief! Interview invite 12/7 snail mail for Jan 14. IS. Completed 09/11.

So if we were put on the alternate list, is it a pretty small chance to be accepted at the end of one of the upcoming months? Anybody know any numbers regarding how many are accepted from the alt list?

I just had my interview today and I have no clue why this school is so underestimated. They have a huge and pretty new medical center, their facilities are NOT rundown, the students seem happy and there is so much opportunity in Detroit. This school is a diamond in the rough and I will sincerely be jealous of anyone who goes here if I don't get in. Good luck everyone! Now I wait and pray...
i just want to add, detroit is also a really underestimated place also. sure, it's not the city it used to be and it has its problems, but there is soo much culture here, amazing volunteer opportunities, and the people are the best. i really hope to keep living here. still waiting to hear though.

These are the stats for the 2007-2008 cycle. It can be a little misleading because it doesn't include the number of students who were actually accepted, only the number of students that matriculated. But if you're IS, I think you got a fairly good shot. The OOS stats are a a bit skewed because the OOS tuition is so high that a lot of students choose to go to other schools.

I've met a fair amount of students who were accepted off of the wait-list, some that were even accepted the week before orientation. So I wouldn't give up all hope, although I wouldn't expect to hear anything before May 15th either (at least that's how it was last year).

How is it misleading to have statistics from the actual class as opposed to the stats from everyone who was accepted? If you include all the stats from everyone who was accepted, then you get the info in the MSAR which is quite inflated. For example, the MSAR will tell you that a 32 is the median MCAT score, while the actual class is made up of people who averaged a 30. I know the median and mean are different, but in a class of 290, the difference is probably negligible.

For the entering class in 2008, 77.XX% of those who interviewed were eventually accepted. I posted this information a few pages back. Source: usnews.com :luck:

Do you live in Michigan? I'm in Indiana and was hoping to get an interview invite, but have yet to receive one. Also, do you get an email invite, too. I'm paranoid about snail mail because the guys I'm living with are terrible about getting mail to me.

Thanks, oh and congrats!

It's confusing because you don't know the actual number of accepted students. For instance, there were roughly 250 students who matriculated out of 520 that interviewed. For all you know, 500 students could have been accepted, or 250 students could have been accepted. Some schools have a high turnover, while others tend to be lower. Maybe you can call the school and they can give you the number of acceptances that were offered (although it looks like you got the number from US News).

I wouldn't call MSAR inflated. The stats given in the book are for accepted students (I think), and the stats on the website are matriculated students. Generally, the stats for accepted students run higher than matriculated.

Yes you're correct. The numbers in the MSAR are indeed the acceptance numbers for every medical school. They are higher than the entering class stats at most schools due to many applicants receiving multiple offers which makes the numbers appear higher than what they really are (which is why I used "inflated numbers"...perhaps "skewed" is the more accurate term?). This is why I prefer to see data from the schools actual first year class: it gives a much more accurate picture of one's competitiveness based on numbers alone.

The USPS is extremely slow. I live 90 or so miles from the school and it took them till Thursday to deliver my secondary application to Wayne State when I submitted it on a Monday. If they're that slow during the week, then you can probably expect some additional time if they have your mail over a weekend. I would wait till the end of the week before deciding they probably didn't send you the invite this time around. When were you complete?

I am about 30 miles from the school. Though call the admissions office, they really are very nice about giving you your status.
Emails are sent out only if the time between notification and interview is short (atleast that is the way it was explained to me)

Just called. No interview this time around for me. They haven't decided on my application yet - according to admissions "they have not yet made a final decision about whether or not to interview e and could be any time between now and april - applications are not necesarily reviewed in the order received since there is not rolling admissions"

not to be pedantic, but I think one would get a more accurate picture of one's competitiveness from looking at the numbers for all acceptees, rather than those of all matriculates. this is because you are competing against everyone who applies to the school, not just against those who ultimately matriculate there.

ok, I guess that was pedantic...

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but I got an interview invite recently and I was wondering if I have to notify them that I have received the invite and am in fact coming. The letter didn't say anything about confirming your date, it just said come on down on this specified date for an interview.

Should I confirm this, or just show up on my interview date?

Thanks.

I was complete middle of September.

One of the forms they mention in the interview invite, has a phone # if you wish to reschedule. So I guess the assumption is, if you don't call to reschedule, u r good for now!

Did they happen to say when they might be sending out more invitations to interview?

They'll e-mail you close to the date for a confirmation e-mail. If you want to be proactive you can e-mail or call and say you'll come.

If I interview on Jan 26th and they have a committee meeting on Jan 27th, is there any chance that they'll evalulate me too??? 24 hr notice would be amazing.

Interview invite today for Jan 11th! Complete on 9/25. I'm OOS 🙂

Does anyone know how much financial aid Wayne State awards in comparison to the other Michigan schools?

Thanks guys.

MSUCOM gives pretty good terms on their loans. I don't know about MSUCHM or U of M are but Wayne is decent. Depending on your parental EFC you may qualify for Perkins Loans 3k-6k, Board of Gov scholarships 9k+, or both.

i called the office yesterday and they said the ADCOM meets first week of january. i'd expect invites around january 7th or 8th

Snail mail invite today!!!!! Interview for 1/15!!! I'm sooooo excited, I thought I would never get another interview!

Hey, how did you find out where you were on the alternate list last year? I am curious because I was on it as well but never attempted to see where I finished.

ms. holland told me that based on my score, and the last score that they accepted. she said ''you were probably 5 people away''

heh.

felt good though.

Is it true that there is no student life at this school? I hear that only like 20 people go to class since they are all web-casted?

I'm social by nature and would really enjoy a school with a strong student life.

Dude, sorry to bust your bubble, but there's no student life at any med school.

That said, there's plenty of extracurriculars if you want to be social.

so if we were put on alternate, will we still get an update on the 23rd?

My bubble isn't busted, but do you or did you actually go to Wayne State? I was hoping to get someone who had experiences there.

Some schools have smaller class sizes and seems to have a much better student life.

I was kind of wondering about this too... the letter says that we could hear at any point during the cycle... so I guess we shall see next week!

when i interviewed here the students said that it was like high school and everyone pretty much knew everyone even with the huge class size - unless they chose to be antisocial....

I'm a first year WSU student. The student life here is OK - considering that it is Detroit. It's really what you yourself make of it. From my experience you can be as connected to your classmates or detached as you want. It is definitely a little bit harder to make close connections with classmates than schools with smaller class sizes - especially if you went to a non-Michigan undergrad (cause you probably won't know any of your classmates at the beginning).

BUT from my personal experiences, there are enough opportunities to meet people and make close friends. We have orientation parties, post-exam parties, lots of medically and non-medically related clubs, intramurals, small group sessions, and obviously lab interaction. It's really just like any other school in those regards.

You do have to be more socially pro-active as opposed to just expecting to fall seamlessly into a group of good friends in an instant without any real initiative. The funniest things I hear are from some classmates who complain about not knowing anybody when they themselves very rarely come to campus or rarely talk to any of their classmates.

I'm calling tomorrow to withdraw from my interview. If someone wants to call and try to get the opening on Jan 11th, be my guest. Their OOS tuition is insane!

I was wondering, how much outside walking we do on the tour...just trying to gauge how thick of a coat I should wear.

Thanks in advance!!

though it was just newly autumn when I was there, it was a blustery day and our student tour guides were very conscientious about keeping us out of the inclement weather. we didn't have to go outside at all (as I recall everything is connected via walkways/tunnels). the lot where you will park is a less-than one minute walk from where you'll enter/leave the school, so if you can tough it out you may not even need a coat at all. enjoy your interview day, it's a nice place!

anyone on the alternate list waiting for an update today?

Accepted!

Just got the email. I was waitlisted on the last decision date so it appears they aren't joking when they say you can be accepted at any time.

Accepted today 🙂 I was also placed on the alternate list in November. Yay!
