I answered Question B in group 1, the one about what i can contribute to the class and im interviewing next week, OOS. answer the question you can answer the best. there was no way i could answer question A in group 1.

Group I

A. The Admissions Committee strongly encourages you to share unique, personally important and/or other factors in your background, such as the quality of your early educational environment, socioeconomic status, race, culture, ethnicity or life or work experiences. Please discuss how such factors have influenced your goals and preparation for a career in medicine.

I honestly think they don't favor applicants who answer this question. I think all they wanted to convey by stating "The Admissions Committee strongly encourages..." was to have an introductory clause to the prompt. You may have covered some of this information in the question that asked about giving a brief autobiography of your life or some of it in your personal statement.

i actually didnt notice this when answering the secondary, but question A starts out stating, "The admissions committee strongly encourages you to share..." im not sure if they actually prefer that over the other 2 or what. perhaps they just encourage you to answer A if it applies to you. it doesnt really apply to me so i didnt answer it.

Thanks for the quick response guys. I hope I get an interview!!!

I've been complete since Oct 21st yet have heard nothing from the school as of yet. When should the interview invite (if any) arrive at this stage? I have a 34 MCAT, 2.85 undergrad GPA, and 3.815 SMP GPA (I'm told Wayne State will replace your undergrad science GPA with your grad GPA). Oh and I'm from California. 🙁

I submitted mid-August and got my invite in the mail 2 and a half months later. im from CA too, so its possible! good luck and hang in there

I answered B and received an interview. If they really wanted applicants to answer question A, then they wouldn't offer two other options. Don't read into this - they aren't mysteriously trying to test our reading comprehension.

I didn't answer this one and got an interview. my first thought upon reading it was, how is anyone supposed to answer that in just 500 words (or whatever the limit was...maybe it was 250?). I agree with the many ppl above who do not interpret the wording of this as indicating that the adcom prefers you to answer this over the other topics. answer the ones for which you have the most honest and thoughtful answers

Hi all, I'm interviewing at Wayne and could use some help answering some questions that I have about the SOM program.

If you have the time, please visit the thread below and post your thoughts either in that thread or in this current thread. Thanks so much! I'm excited to interview at Wayne and with your help, I will nail my interview!

A StudentDoc admin suggested that I move my questions to this thread. Hopefully some Wayne students will take note and help us out.

I'm excited to interview at Wayne and would appreciate getting some answers to some questions that will help me for my interview. Thanks in advance for the help!

What are the clinical opportunities at Wayne for MS1s and MS2s?

What do you like best about Wayne?

What don't you like?

What unique programs does Wayne have that are not present at other medical schools?

I have heard great stuff about the DMC, how does the lottery process work for clerkships? Is your placement purely by luck, or are your grades taken into account?

During clerkships are you restricted to one hospital in the DMC or do you rotate around?

What advice do you have for students interviewing at Wayne?

I have heard that Wayne is a fairly conservative school, is this true?

What are the research opportunities for Wayne students, is this a focus for Wayne, or are they more interested in clinical training?

What do you like to do for fun while attending Wayne? Outdoor activities, indoor, etc...?

Any interview advice?

-Hey, I'm a 1st year right now, hope this helps:

What are the clinical opportunities at Wayne for MS1s and MS2s?

-Honestly, that's what your 3rd and 4th years are for. Focus your first two years on learning your basic science well. But there are plenty of free clinics in Detroit that lots of students volunteer at.

What do you like best about Wayne?

-So far everyone I've met in my class is really friendly (of course every class has its share of douchebags). Also, being from MI, it's nice to be close to home. Detroit is a great place to live and to learn medicine- some of the hospitals down here allow you to gain a lot of practice (mostly 3rd and 4th yr stuff).

What don't you like?

-Administration is kind of a pain in the ass (they can be slow at times). Some of the lectures/classes are a bit disorganized (but everyone still survives so I guess they can't be that bad).

What unique programs does Wayne have that are not present at other medical schools?

-Check the website.

I have heard great stuff about the DMC, how does the lottery process work for clerkships? Is your placement purely by luck, or are your grades taken into account?

-From what I have heard, in the next few years they are trying to move most of the rotation sites to Henry Ford (which is OK with me because everyone says its better than the DMC anyways). The relationship between WSU and DMC is strained at the moment, hopefully it will get better. But there are plenty of hospitals in the area (Beaumont, St. John's, Henry Ford, VA, etc.) that students have the opportunity to rotate through. DMC will be getting a lot of the new MSUCOM students that just got to the D.
For placement, you rank your top choices and they will try to get you where you want to be. Of course there are only a limited number of spots at each rotation site, so you may not get your first choice.

During clerkships are you restricted to one hospital in the DMC or do you rotate around?

-They are moving towards doing all your rotations at one hostpital. This allows for continuity, and makes it easier for the administration at the hospital as well. However, your elective rotations you can choose to do at other hospitals (pretty much anywhere that agrees to take you).

What advice do you have for students interviewing at Wayne?

-Make sure you express your interest in attending WSU and learning medicine in Detroit (if you don't want to go here give up your interview spot to someone that does).
I made sure that my interviewer understood that Wayne was my first choice (and I guess it worked).

I have heard that Wayne is a fairly conservative school, is this true?

-Ummm...

What are the research opportunities for Wayne students, is this a focus for Wayne, or are they more interested in clinical training?

-Wayne is a big research school, so yes it's a focus. If you are interested in doing research I'm sure that there is something here that you can find. It's just a matter of taking some initiative and e-mailing profs. Plus, there is also Karmanos down the street if you're into that sort of stuff. And the clinical thing, noone cares till your rotation years.

What do you like to do for fun while attending Wayne? Outdoor activities, indoor, etc...?
-Sleep is always nice. But outdoor stuff there is Belle Isle downtown and plenty of stuff in the suburbs. To be honest, when I'm not studying I'm either sleeping or partying.

Any interview advice?

-Have fun! And don't stress out too much. The last thing you need is grey hair.
Also, get one of your friends to practice with you. There is interview feedback somewhere on SDN, get questions and practice, practice, practice with your friends (preferebly one who will bust your ass).

Feel free to PM with questions.

Just a quick question to you instate students.

Which would you choose: A full tuition scholarship and go to Wayne State or no scholarship and go to the University of Michigan?

It should depend a lot on what your residency choice is.
If you want to go for a super tough residency (plastic surgery, Radiology etc), then the U of M name can probably give you an edge. You should research how many U of M students have gone in these branches & how many wayne state students have. I honestly havent done that research.

ultimately up to you.
but why run yourself into debt if you don't need to?
what extra value would you get out of UofM for your $ that you wouldn't get out of WSU?

I was once told that it doesn't matter which med school you go to as any school should teach you more than you'll ever be able to learn and retain.

Is it really going to matter later in your career?
It MIGHT have an impact on residency - but I highly doubt it as I have no idea where most of the residents I work with (or the MS4s we are interviewing) trained at, nor do I think that it really matters. But then again I'm just a lowly PGY2 and not a PD.

I am not in-state but...FOLLOW THE MONEY...are you serious?

I feel like people who ask these sorts of ?s have never worked and have never had to pay for anything themselves...

qft. 120k + interest is a lot of money...

I totally disagree. If one gives up a full ride for a neglible percieved boost for an unltra-competitive residency then what one lacks is common sense.

I am going to stick with my previous thought -- though I should have completed it before --- if you are not planning a super tough residency then obviously your choice should be Wayne state.

The student host I stayed with at Wayne told me that the teachers at wayne say that if you can honor most or all of your classes at Wayne and have a decent CV, you have a very good chance of landing competitive specialties.

I totally disagree with your disagreement. Look at the stats. This is a key bragging point that all the ivy leauges, the johns hopkins, and the wash U's throw at you at interviews... they have higher residency match rates than comparable students from other schools, no matter what the field. Obviously, dermatologists., ortho surgeons, and plastic surgeons come from all over, but the route is easier when you have 'Michigan' after your MD. Think about it yourself... you have two applicants, bot high honored most classes, both got a 245 on their step 1, and similar e.cs. one went to harvard, another went to wayne.. which would you choose let's face I... where u go to school always matters.

But from what I understand, wayne has great clinical experience where as the research in ann arbor is the best in the midwest (sorry mayo, I'm trying to prove a point here).

But we'll agree to disagree.

If you think that a little bump in your ability to match into a specialty you may not even end up pursuing is worth $120,000 plus interest you have to be crazy. If you would be much, much happier at U of M, then maybe you could make an argument.

If I had to borrow over $175,000 to attend medical school, I would seriously reconsider medicine as a career - forget about schools.

Go read the residents forums and see how they are coping with their debt. You may change your mind.

No problem that we disagree. We're all paying to play out our own situations.

But to refine the issue being discussed. We're not talking about Harvard or Hopkins vs. Wayne State. We're talking about UM vs. Wayne state.

And besides michigan football is weak. If you're gonna go big state U. At least play some d@mn football worth talking about.

I hate questions like this, but here is the reality:

NOONE GIVES A **** WHERE YOU GO TO MED SCHOOL.

Do well on your boards. Don't screw up any classes. Do some research. Don't be a jackass. You'll get in wherever you want.

...If you can afford to give up the scholarship, then go to UM. If not, take the money.

Nothing here yet. According to a post a while ago, I think they are meeting sometime this month to discuss invites. When exactly that is, I have no idea.

lets hope for good news before Christmas!! i want an interview here so badly!!!!

FML. I live 30 minutes from the school. If someone else has already gotten an invite today after the adcom met and I didn't... bad news for me. Passed up once again. At least OSSers have some hope for an invite in the mail next week.

Well it's not a rejection either 😉

Complete early, at latest early August, can't really remember. Postmarked 12/3.

I agree...I raced home to check my mail since I live 30 mins away too and yep nothing there for me either 🙁 Im sad again. I thought sure I would be in hte next batch of invites

Prestige of your medical school is 9th out of the top 14 criteria residencies use to rank applicants according to the latest residency selection criteria article. However, if you are talking about a free ride and you choose the other school you have some kind of problem with judgment.

That's so funny! I was just skimming through this article as I was reading this thread...

Thought I'd provide a link to the original source: http://journals.lww.com/academicmed..._Criteria_for_Residency__Results_of_a.24.aspx

I just had my interview today and I have no clue why this school is so underestimated. They have a huge and pretty new medical center, their facilities are NOT rundown, the students seem happy and there is so much opportunity in Detroit. This school is a diamond in the rough and I will sincerely be jealous of anyone who goes here if I don't get in. Good luck everyone! Now I wait and pray...

For those of you who have at least interviewed at Wayne State this year, did they give you any statistics regarding the entering class in 2009 such as avg. GPA and MCAT scores?

the day was pretty informal so there was no presentation or anything where they gave that kind of info. the day was pretty short: an optional tour, and optional lunch and then your interview. im guessing the numbers arent very different from what the latest MSAR says.

Does anyone else find that weird, BTW? The hour or two interview day?

soooo who's gonna call to find out when adcom meets again? I know a friend of mine who just interviewed said they'll find out about acceptance no later than December 23rd when the adcom meets, but are we really going to have to wait this long between invites being sent out. it seems like the last batch of them went out beginning of november.

When reviewing old posts, some people got invites on 10/09 and 10/15...so maybe they'll send out another batch before they break for Christmas:xf:

I agree.

And this school really does want to make caring doctors.

Not just fluff. By fluff I mean.. nevermind.. bitter about another school.

But really do gather it from the committee. They think about who really is ready for the trip.

Got the interview invite today via snail mail. (12/7) Postmarked 12/3. I'm IS. Hope that helps.
