every school you've applied to 😎

Really? I've never heard of that, which schools?

I'm not going to bad mouth other schools based on second hand info, but I've heard that there are some where you are put into a room to "mingle" with current students and the other applicants during which you are secretly being graded on your interpersonal group skills. Sound familiar to anyone?

Haha yes...sounds like Hopkins...

It's not a secret that it's happening. It's just weird.

Mdeast, you really believe because we've been waiting for so long it's a rejection? What about interviewing later in the season? Maybe hope dies hard but I feel they must do some extent of re-reviewing vs. only picking from people applying from now onwards...

I've always wondered what it would be like if your student host were somehow part of the admissions process (unbeknownst to you, obviously)... idk if I'd be down with that haha

with regards to the mingling with current students thing... i kind of wish yale did this. at yale we were never left alone with current students at any point *at all.* not even for lunch (they never showed). it was one of the only disappointing aspects of my interview day: i did not get to meet anyone from yale!

but they do that mingling thing at hopkins for sure 🙂

well i don't think it's possible in yale because student hosts are first years and the only students on the AD COM are fourth years. so you can sleep easy.

So I really liked Yale when I interviewed (the friendliest admissions staff and best library and anatomy lab I've seen thus far), except for one thing: the students. I'm sorry to generalize, but I wanted to see if anyone shared my sentiment. My tour guide, the students sitting at lunch with us, the students we bumped into in the library, even my student interviewer...they talked excitedly about their school, but you couldn't tell from their stone-cold, analytical faces. It was a bit disheartening. They weren't unfriendly, but they weren't friendly either. Of all the schools I've visited, I was the least impressed by the student body reception at Yale. Any thoughts?

oh my goodness i thought it was just me. i really did not like the vibe i got from students at Yale, I don't know how to explain it, but i just felt they were a bit too 'ivy league' and by that i mean the 'look at me i go to Yale therefore i am great attitude."

but other than that yale was great.

I completely agree with both of you. I loved Yale but the students did not give me a good vibe at all. I wish it would've been different. Oh well.

Well, I don't think it's an "Ivy" thing. Oddly enough, I think it's just Yale, though I've heard that the attitude typifies Cornell, too. I have yet to interview at Penn, but everyone I've talked to loves Penn Med kids. Also, my favorite student body thus far, without question, has been Columbia. So the "Yale effect" can't be explained by its Ivy status 🙂

its not an ivy thing. i havent been to yale, but the penn med kids seemed really chill. i agree with the above poster about columbia too. i think at any top med school there will be a percent of the class like that, though. i liked hopkins a lot, but i thought the mingling thing was kinda awkward because we all knew we were being evaluated. i kinda wonder if that happens at Penn too during the lunch..

Nice to know I wasn't the only one with this sentiment. I completely agree with Lightseizure about Columbia students - they were the most amazing by far. The students at Yale talked about how chill it was because of the Yale system, etc. etc. and I loved everything else about the school, but they almost seemed like zombies... maybe if we get lucky enough to be accepted and attend 2nd look weekend things will be different?

Yale was the first highly ranked school I went to, and while it was and still is my favorite, I must admit I didn't get a great feel for the student body. I didn't get a bad vibe, mind you, I just didn't get much of any vibe.

I was really impressed by the students at Penn, Columbia, and to a slightly lesser extent Hopkins.

I'd be stoked to go to any of these schools though.

Ha! I totally must be old and boring or super analytical-nerdy then. I loved the people at Yale. Perhaps it was my ridiculous hosts (a husband and wife Yale Med couple). I was so impressed. I'm sorry you felt that way, though. Thank goodness for everyone who felt this way, it seems, that they will likely have offers at many schools with equal opportunity or better than Yale has to offer.

The only school I interviewed at with a generally friendlier class was San Antonio. But what more do you expect when there are palm trees everywhere on campus and outstanding football teams all over your state?

In the end I have to laugh that I am sticking up for Yale when the odds suggest I am not likely to receive an offer, but who knows? 🙂

I think of you stayed with a student host you would have gotten a better feel for the school. I don't know whether any of you guys stayed with a host or not. The interviewees don't get that much student contact on interview day except for the students that sit with you for lunch and your tour guide. Most times than not the first years have just come directly from being in lecture/lab all morning.

What I would say is don't be so hasty to generalise an entire student body based on your impression of a handful of people you may have encountered that day. I am sure similar adjectives can be used for some of your own classmates at your respective schools and you wouldn't appreciate it if someone made a sweeping generalisation of the student body to which you belonged based on briefly meeting a few people.

I am sorry some of you guys felt the way you did about the "zombie" student body. My guess is that this is more the perception on your end rather than a true characteristic of the Yale Med student body. I assure you, although some people may come to lecture a bit sleepy on occasion, there are no zombies here. The students that I've met here are some of the most interesting and dynamic people you will meet. Don't get me wrong, interview day is slightly overwhelming and you try to take in as much as you can at the school you are visiting that day, so it is easy to underestimate and miss some things you may otherwise have appreciated had you visited under less intense circumstances.

Hopefully some of you, should you get accepted, return for second look weekend and I assure you that you will re-evaluate your initial assessment of the disposition of the student body. Think of it this way, if the school was so great in all other respects, admissions, facilities, professors, etc, why then would they go accept students who were the antithesis to the way they presented the school and its philosophy to be? 🙂

my student host left me alone for the night and stayed at her boyfriend's 🙄

ah well, i'll be in new haven this weekend to watch yalies get CRUSHED by the crimson. 😀 do lots of med students make it out to the game?

The football? No.

Watching Yale show Harvard how to tailgate? Yes.

At least we don't ban trailers, alcohol and fun down here in New Haven.

😱 my host did the same thing! I still got lots of love for yale though. no doubt

lol. to be honest, I think I liked Yale's tailgate much better than Harvard's. Coming down there on Friday.

Look for the Yale med trailer. It'll be the one with the anatomy models on the roof. Come say yo and have a cold one.

In an effort to curb secondary application fees, I didnt apply to Yale- I figured it was too much of a reach. However, now I'm thinking about it. Is there a point in applying at this time?? Do they look disfavorably on applications submitted this late? I'm not a superstar applicant (3.73/33Q/Cornell senior), but I'm not a bad one either- solid recs and EC's, already a Weill and Penn interview- anyone heard anything from Yale at the interview etc how they look on later applications? I know it's not rolling, just curious.....

If you think you'd like to go to Yale, then just give it a go. I can't comment on whether the lateness of your secondary will make a difference to you getting an interview, but fyi I got an interview with 3.7/34S/state school.

Does Yale send out post-secondary rejections or is it one of those - if you don't hear anything by January, assume rejection...

just invited - App complete way long ago (end of september?)

there are plenty of interview spots still left - all of january and all of february have interviews 2/3 times a week.

gl all!

i think yale is one of those schools that doesn't tell anyone *anything* until march.

complete 11/17. Invite 11/30.

contacted me by email this morning.

Does anyone know if it makes a difference when you interview? Does interviewing later in the cycle decrease your chances even though it is a non-rolling school? Did they answer this question in the interviews??? Thanks!

It doesn't make a difference. They do not review the files until everyone has been interviewed (at least that's what they told me!)

Here is a little Yale humor while we wait:

A Harvard man and a Yale man are at the urinal. They finish and zip up. The Harvard man proceeds to the sink to wash his hands, while the Yale man immediately makes for the exit.
The Harvard man says, "At Harvard they teach us to wash our hands after we urinate."
The Yale man replies, "At Yale they teach us not to [urinate] on our hands."

yeaa haven't heard much from this thread in a while.. is yale done with interviews or what? anyone got one in the last month? lol

Has anyone sent an update letter? I sent an update email to my schools and got a response from most saying that my file has been updated, but no word from Yale. Do they not reply or is it just me?

Going back to Yale's student body.... I do not know why, but the students are dreadful..and not only med students but the undergrads as well. To me, they seemed like zombies....

No wonder Harry Potter's Emma Watson turned down Yale and chose to attend Brown.

Wait ksmi, you emailed them to check if they had recieved your email update? ? 😉

Umm, how much do you know about Yale students? If you think that you can form an encompassing impression about the whole Yale student body through a one day visit to the med school, you are foolish. From my experience most students are happy. I mean endless resources, great student body, great food, great nightlife, easy access to NY and Boston... Should I go on? Anyway, seems like either you are an ivy-wannabie or just another Harvard student with too much time on your hands. In any case, perhaps Yale is not the right fit for you:scared:

Yale students are definitely not dreadful. And while they haven't granted me an interview yet (crosses fingers), I have visited the medical school for conferences and everyone seemed pretty happy, content and excited to be going there.

But, great nightlife?? In New Haven??? Yes there are restaurants and things to do, but I don't think you can really say that New Haven has "great" nightlife. Have you been to a real city?
