So two things:

1. Are they serious when they say they require 18 humanities credits? Really? Wow. I'm an engineer. I have a ton of credits in fascinating medical, engineering, science courses, but only 9 in humanities. I'll bring this up to 15 before I graduate, but there is no way I can break 18. Am I barred from Emory?

2. 100 words is only a little longer than what I've written in this entire post, so yeah, it's not enough for the essays. Double-wow.

Yeah 100 words is a little too short--I'm sure they look at it, but I can't imagine they put THAT much weight on it.

18 credits of humanities/social sciences!?! Finally the non science majors get some love!! Haha glad i did a BA in economics now

Is there a reason they give us a 1000 characters to answer where we will be during the interview season? Are we just supposed to list a location or are we supposed to give details as to what we will be doing?

Also, is anyone having difficulty saving each page? When I hit save and continue the page just loads half way and then shows that its working forever... and never finishes

Yes I've been having the exact same problem. I was just gonna wait it out for a day before calling admissions.

For the 2010-2011 curriculum question...does everyone know what they'll actually be taking? I do for the first semester, but for the second, there's nothing that I HAVE to take, so I really havent decided yet...any thoughts on how I should deal with that on the application?

I'm in a similar position - I know approx. how many credits I'll be taking, and two of the actual classes, but the exact details are still in progress. As long as you take close to the same number of credits in classes broadly similar to what you list (e.g. don't go from 21 credits in biomedical engineering to 9 credits in sociology) you should be OK.

I had that problem in Firefox until I switched to Internet Explorer. You can see the page in other browsers but it seems they're serious when they say to use IE. Worked for me.

I think Emory is interested in hearing about the courses you've taken that dealt with human culture, human struggles. I get the impression that they're most interested in students who will be good at the art of medicine. I don't think Economics really transfers in that context. You should call though, maybe they just left Economics off of the list accidentally.

I'm surprised people are having trouble getting 18 credits. Most non-technical schools require a certain number of gen. ed requirements.

Yeah like I said I'll have 15 (which is the requirement for my school) but I hadn't planned on taking another humanities course. I mean, I could, and I probably will now that there's a reason to, but it's kind of lame all the same.

Just got the secondary. Verified 6/24

Haven't received 2ndary yet. Verified 06/04. WTF? ... Though Emory was a later addition... can't remember exactly when. I think it was early July. If I recall correctly, Emory doesn't screen primaries, right?

Emory doesn't screen. I just got my secondary yesterday, verified 6/18

I added Emory on 06/30. Could that be the reason? I thought that schools that don't screen will it out to everyone at the same time, regardless of when their apps was verified. Now I'm worried it ended up in my spam folder.

I would think it's because you added them a little later. I also added schools later and didn't receive secondaries until a bit after everyone else did. Shouldn't a be a big deal

After the very basic courses Econ is all about how people make choices and maximize their utility, money was only mentioned like 3 times after the intro courses. But being an Econ major at my school kind of forces me to fulfill the 18 credit requirement.

Seeing as I'm an engineer the only way I will make the 18 is if they count econ (or wines!), I just clicked "Yes" for the do you meet the humanities requirement question and I would be pretty surprised if its an issue.

Worst case scenario if you get accepted and it's an issue you can take a humanities class over the summer.

For the question about our 2010-2011 curriculum plan, does this mean we need to include a list of the courses we plan to take? Do we put extracurriculars too?

Finally got their 2ndary. Though now I'm worried whether I fulfilled their humanities requirement. It's not like I'm an undergrad senior and can take a few more classes next semester. I graduated 2 years ago.

Can anyone tell me what the essay prompts r. Thanks

Hey hey,

Sorry for not getting this out sooner. The email indicated that the application will only work for PCs with internet explorer, so I had to go to an internet cafe.

1. Briefly describe (in 100 words or less) what you are doing if you are no longer a fulltime student.

2. Briefly describe (in approximately 100 words) any health-related experience and/or research experience (volunteer or employed). Also, indicate the time and frequency of your involvement. Note: If you have had experience in several health-related areas, list each with a very brief description. Or, you may choose the most meaningful experience and describe it in more detail.

3. Briefly describe (in approximately 100 words) your interest in Emory.

There is also an additional essay if you are applying for the MD/MPH program asking about your experience with Public Health.

Cheers and good luck y'alls!

I'm unsure about exactly what they mean for the health-related/research experience question:

Note: If you have had experience in several health-related areas, list each with a very brief description. Or, you may choose the most meaningful experience and describe it in more detail.

My question is: do they only want health-related research, or are they looking for any type of research experience? Thoughts?

the way I read it was Health Related OR Research related (doesnt have to be related to health). So I'd write about research even if its in like comp sci or something

I agree with the person who replied above.

"and/or" means health-related experience OR research experience OR health-related research experience. Any of those three.

When I answered the 100 word limit health-related experiences question, I just completely ignored the character limit. I was not going to limit my activities, especially since the system did not automatically limit me like other secondary apps tend to do.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but not following the character limit, even if it doesn't automatically limit you is probably a bad idea. Seems like that shows a lack of ability to follow directions, but I could be wrong.

Yeah, there may be some truth to that statement. However, I wanted to ensure that I was able to include all of my activities and sufficiently explain them. I seriously doubt that they would throw away an applicant because of page limit parameters. If I was only listing things, maybe I could condense it a little more. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

I did what I had to do to ensure that my application described me accurately. Limiting my activities and contributions to various service projects was simply not an option.

Pick your most meaningful one(s)

Yea I gotta agree with Crisco. If you already submitted it then don't worry about it, but I think they were more looking for you to pick the one (or few) thing(s) that you thought were important to include. Something like a 100 word limit for all their questions makes me think they don't feel like reading anything too long.

Sorry to post again, but I don't think anyone answered. Thanks!

I just said where I was going to be at school in the fall and then mentioned that I would be at home during winter break.

I think they are mostly just checking to be sure your going to be in the country.

I didn't list any exact addresses, which maybe I should have, but I guess they will contact me if they need the info

Anyone know if Emory has a regional bias?

I have anecdotal evidence that suggests a preference for students who come from south of the Mason-Dixon line, but I don't know if this is generally the case.

Thoughts?

I'm hoping its true 😀

(Sorry I don't have any actual info, though it would make "sense" for most private schools to have some sort of a regional bias, intentionally or not)

Since it says APPROXIMATELY 100 words, do you think it is that much of a no-no to write 125??

No. Mine were like 128. 25 characters is only like 1 sentence anyway. I think they just don't want to end up reading a bunch of long essays.

This could be true, but I think there's a self-selection bias on the part of the applicants. I have a feeling that there are many more applicants to Emory from the south than the north...

Submitted 7/28. On the status page it says they have received the secondary, fee, photograph and letters of recommendation. but then at the bottom it says "application complete: Not at this time". was anyone else in a similar situation? does it just take a few days to update to complete?

It says in the paragraph at the bottom it can take up to two weeks from when everything shows as done for it to be formally complete, so I wouldn't worry until it's been that long.

No worries, I'm in the same boat. They've had my LOR and secondary/fee/etc. since 7/23 or 7/24, I think.

Is Emory rolling admissions? Does anybody know if they take their own undergrad students.
I flat out told Emory that it has been my #1 choice since I was in the 5th grade which is true. Although in the 5th grade that was just because my mother started working there but it is truly my #1. do you think that will play into consideration for them?

Also, for those asking about living near emory. you can expect to pay anywhere from 450 a month to 650 a month for rent. if you live farther away in certain directions it will be a bit cheaper but traffic is horrible in atlanta speaking from 12 years of experience. trust me, you will want to pay the extra to live closer.
