I would advise against Berwyn. It's better than Maywood, but not a super great place to live in terms of safety, community, etc. Which is why it's probably looking like you can get "more for less" in terms of rent. I'd recommend sticking with River Forest, Forest Park, Oak Park, and Westminster (if you haven't looked into that yet!).

I would disagree with the advice against Berwyn. A community is what you make of it. Yeah, its a little more run down than River Forest, Forest Park, etc. But if you get to know your neighbors, it can be great.
This is coming from someone who lives in Pilsen, in Chicago - don't let talk of crime dissuade you from a location - nowhere in Chicago is so bad as to be unlivable, especially if you get to know the people around you - people look out for each other.

Does anyone know where I can find information on exactly when school starts and when we need to be there this summer?? I am from the East Coast so i am trying to figure everything out now as to when I will need to go out there and when I should leave my job and what not.

i think there's a decision meeting today? anyone confirm?

If the pattern of past years continues, Last full week of July is orientation week...Monday , July 25th would be the first day of orientation. This has not been officially confirmed with us yet, but perhaps second look day will shed more light on this matter.

Has anyone sent an interest letter to the school post-interview but pre-decision on application?

I love the school and I want to express my interest, but I didn't know if Loyola was receptive to this, or if it would be better to wait until a decision has been made.

If anyone could shed some light on this for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance!! 🙂

I know I already posted this a while back .. but I figured not everyone is going to be reading posts months back -

For all incoming students and those strongly considering, we have a Facebook group going called 'Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, Class of 2015'

We're also planning a post-second look get together, you can find the details on FB .. so just wanted to make sure no one is left out ! 😀

I don't know specifically about Loyola, but the advice I received regarding schools in general was to wait until a decision has been made. Your letter will have more impact, and if you write a letter pre-decision, if you become waitlisted it's a lot harder to write another letter in response immediately if you already wrote one 2 weeks prior. Save your admission ammo! After your initial decision, all bets are off and you can write letters often (seriously, you can write more than one LOI. Send them every 2-3 weeks post-decision as long as you keep them fresh and include new updates/reasons why Loyola is the place for you).

Take DRLaut's impression of Berwyn more than mine. He/she seems more informed about the Berwyn area so definitely consider it a viable option! 🙂

n=1, but I send my letter of intent pre-decision last year and was accepted on the first round having interviewed at the end of March. No way of knowing if the letter had any influence but after interviewing and knowing this was where I wanted to be, I saw no reason to wait.

I sent one to Loyola within the week after interviewing. I really wanted to make the distinction between my opinions about the school before and after my visit. Loyola talks a lot about fit, and I wanted to emphasize how I felt after actually being around the school and its students and faculty. I don't think it could hurt, and it's one more concrete thing in your file they will have during the adcom meeting.

Thanks for the advice! Berwyn is just a little more in my price range and coming from the suburban area I've grown up in I just wanted to check out the area. Maybe I will go over there during second look and see for myself. I liked the Oak Park/Forest Park area better, but I will need to find some roommates...haha

If you grew up suburban, Oak Park/Forest Park will probably be more comfortable, especially north of Lake Street, but Berwyn does have large areas of 'Chicago Bungalows', which are nice little homes that fit on a normal Chicago lot.
It shouldn't be too hard to find roommates - lots of Loyola kids want to live in Oak Park/Forest Park, just put a notice on the Facebook page or something.
I grew up suburban too, but I've lived in the city now for almost 4 years, and as much as I used to not like cities, its now hard to think of transitioning back to the suburbs 🙂

Still complete and under review. Chances are quite slim at this point. 🙁 Last year they sent a mass pre-interview rejection email at the end of April. Here's to waiting. 👎

Anyone know if they have met/made decisions? I interviewed 3/5 and I think Dean Jones said they would be meeting 3/21 (or maybe 3/22, I don't remember). And I know they have not been calling everyone who has been accepted and most have been waiting for the snail mail acceptance. Would calling tomorrow be a bad idea to check my status?

just called, for all those that are waiting, apparently they had to switch the meeting date from march 21st to the 28th....so gotta hang in there a bit longer.

Thanks for the info mickey. Here's to another week's worth of waiting...

I'm in the same boat. Do you know if they do rejections via email only or via status change too? I haven't heard a peep from them all season despite saying that they received my update.

so disappointing... 🙁

Any news yet from Loyola today after the committee review? What time do the phone calls usually go out?!

Thanks!!!!

just got a call a little bit back today, accepted 🙂 .GL to those waiting:luck:!!!

Congrats! Did your "Application status" change online too? On my interview day it was mentioned that they don't necessarily have a chance to call everyone (especially not right away).

I called last week to inquire about my application status and they told me that the committee was going to meet to look at my application (and many others) one final time.

I'm hanging on by a thread here and I am assuming the committee met on Monday. Considering I haven't heard anything it looks like the thread may have snapped. On the other hand, I haven't been rejected yet. Has anyone received an interview invitation recently?

Just to clarify, the brand new Facebook page (as of 3/31) BBender mentioned is solely run by Loyola medical students. The Facebook page encourages questions and discussion about life at Stritch. Check it out.
1 post? I don't know if I trust this...

Just messin', even though this guy's a little weird, he's dead on. 😉

Has anyone received information on required immunizations? I haven't received an email and haven't found anything on Stritch's website.

I wouldn't really worry about it yet. They will give out a TON of information way before you come to your first day of orientation. I remember having lots of time over the summer to get it done. Probably not what you were looking for ha. sorry.

Our upstairs neighbors are moving out, so I thought I'd let any accepted students know about a great unit for rent. It's quite big, and is probably best suited for a family, though I suppose a group of students could rent it as well.

The building is located a block south of the the Oak Park Blue Line stop (just a short ride to the Loop), and is about a 10-20 minute drive from Loyola, depending on traffic. It's in a residential neighborhood, and pretty much all the other houses nearby are owned rather than rented out, so neighbors have a vested interest in keeping the neighborhood safe/clean and maintaining a positive neighborhood culture. It's a very safe neighborhood. My wife (a Loyola social work student) and I live on the bottom floor of the house, which includes a shared covered porch.

The unit that is available spans the 2nd and 3rd floors, with the 3rd floor being a very large room with a bathroom. 8 rooms total and 1.5 bathrooms. 2000 sq feet total. It's got a lot of windows and wood trim. The building uses radiators to stay warm in the winter.

Laundry is free and located in the basement. Parking is available, possibly for two vehicles, including one garage space (lets face it, the wife gets it so she doesn't have to clean the snow off the car!). There is a nice backyard with space to plant your own vegetable garden, as well as a lawn. A storage unit in the basement is also included.

Rent is $1500/month, and the unit is available as soon as May 1.

If you're interested, feel free to contact me. Either PM me or e-mail me at [email protected].

Man, I'm in the SF Bay... $1500 for that sounds ridiculously cheap 😀

Haha... We used to live in Berkeley and it cost $1200/month for a tiny apartment with a kitchen the size of my family's tent trailer's kitchen.

But, that apartment was totally worth it, because it was literally a short-block from our favorite restaurant. And the church next door had some kind of Celtic dance music thing once a week in the evenings, so that was kind of fun to dance to on the landing/balcony.

I sure miss the Bay Area... But not the rent.

OMG Brent I know exactly what you mean. I went to Cal for undergrad and since they kick you off campus after freshman year, I spent 3 years living in a rooming house. I had a 90sq ft room that I *shared* with my roommate. We had exactly enough room to fit a bunk bed, two tiny desks, one dresser, and two chairs. It was literally so small that if one of us was out on the ground, the other had to either be at her desk, on the bed, or out of the room or there'd be traffic jams.

This was $900/mo for the two of us... *LOL*

Hi everyone!

I absolutely fell in love with Loyola during my interview day earlier this month. I have subsequently been put on the alternate list. I am writing to see if any of the med students or others on the alternate list know more details, like how many are "Accepted", "Alternate", and "Rejected"... I know at the end of the day Loyola said they accepted around 350 of the 500 who interviewed last year. I am curious as to how many of those 350 came from the alternate list... The wait continues. I hope May 15th will bring good news to all of us. Any information would be wonderful! :luck:

So, has anyone else whose file was getting discussed at the 3/28 meeting receive a decision yet? I saw someone got a call the day of the adcom meeting last week, but I haven't gotten a call or anything in the mail yet. Anyone out there who got good news in the mail?

When I called to check my status last week (pre-interview), the admissions office told me they were going to re-review all of the applications one more time by the end of this week. Has anyone heard any interview invite news lately? I find it pretty hard to believe they are still extending invitations this late but am hoping I'm wrong!

just got in and will definitely be attending! Can any current students answer this question....Are there any specific apt complexes or buildings where a lot of Loyola students live around the oak park/forest park area? any suggestions for housing?

Several people live at the 100 Forest Place and Oak Park Place apartments but I fend them to be a bit pricey. I live at the Mills Park Apartments and there are several more of us here. It is nice, one of the few places with closet space that we looked at, and a working fireplace that was quite helpful when the power went out during the blizzard and thundersnow this winter.

I would check out the Oak Park Regional Housing Center, I know many students found their place through them, some even within just one day. Or just wait until a little bit later in the spring and you will be able to put yourself on a list that has places to rent and potential roommates as well.

Interviews for this week: Decision THIS monday!

Just got off the phone with Rosemary from the admissions office. If you haven't received an interview invite by now then your letter of rejection is in the mail.

Congratulations to those who are matriculating to Loyola. I'm fortunate enough to have other options, but Loyola was the dream school.

Does anyone know when the white coat ceremony is this year? I can't find it anywhere....

Its during the Family Weekend, after the first midterm. I'm not sure what day of the weekend, but the span of dates are August 26-28.

I interviewed on Wednesday and I was told decisions will be made this Monday, April 11.

Reading back a couple pages here, it seems like lots of accepted folks got a phone call.

Is this usually the case? If so, do they call you the same day after the committee meeting?

Also, do letters go out pretty quickly? At other schools I've interviewed at, I was told it could take a few weeks for them to send it out. I realize transit time can also affect the time frame. Luckily USPS won't be affected by a government shutdown. 😉

I was accepted back in late January (I think?) and I didn't get a call. My status page never updated either (still hasn't!). A tiny thin envelope showed up a week later. It was the most nervewracking experience ever *LOL*

That's what happened to me! I was so nervous because I saw all these people posting on here saying "I got a call today"....but i didn't. So, when I got the letter, I was literally about to throw up, but it was GOOD NEWS! 😀 So, you might have to just wait it out a little longer than others. Good luck!

That happened to me as well! I bet sometimes the call doesn't go through or something. I almost through the envelope away haha. Glad I didn't. Well now that you are in, I can continue to shamelessly plug the student designed and monitored Facebook page! We are extremely fast at answering questions and there are already a lot of questions answered. So check it out and "like" our page!

Couldn't contain myself - I had to call for an update.

Adcom is meeting as I type this. Can't take the suspense!!
