Okay please tell me if I'm just paranoid...

I just submitted my app. Looking over it again (stupid, I know), I noticed one of my essays was over 25 lines by ONE WORD. What you would call a "widow" in a newspaper paragraph. I.E., the 26th line is just one word.

Do you think this is okay? I guess I could interpret it as they want no more than 25 FULL lines of text. In the same essay, some of my other paragraphs ended with just a few words in the last line. So if you put all the fragments together, I don't have more than 25 full lines. Hopefully it's okay 🙁

Probably just fine. Either way its too late to worry much about it now so let it go and figure it will be just fine.

How does question 6 differ from question 7 exactly? I answered what new activities I will be doing prior to matriculating in question 6. It would be redundant if I wrote the same again in question 7.

Does anyone know if you are a re-applicant if Loyola looks at your old application and your new one? (I know Georgetown looks at both)

I'm wondering only because for some of the essays I plan on using the same material (rewrite it though)... but I don't want them to be like, wow, she hasn't changed/matured in 2 years. lameee.

Still haven't gotten the secondary either -- but I will be writing all the essays this weekend. 😀

edit. OK as a reapplicant who completed her file before, they will def look at both. This means I will need to really make sure all my essays are different (though two will most likely feature the same topic... but I can't help that)

So I got an email from Loyola.

I am going to attend the Gtown SMP (Aug-June 2011), and they think I wont finish with the masters before matriculation. So they sent me a rejection letter 😱

I was told I can reopen my file if my dean/program director sends them a letter saying that I will be done with the masters by July of 2011.

Sigh....now gotta get that letter in!!

whaaaa! Now that's crazy.

They should be more scared that I won't finish my masters by July 2011 than an SMP.

here ya go

I think they are the same as last year but I am too lazy to go stalk their thread and find out. No character limit but 25 single spaced lines 11 or 12 font. 🙂 Good luck.

And unless the med school is playing a cruel joke and the email with information on logging in and filling out the secondary is lying to me. I am not claiming to receive it I have.

Here are the prompts:
What do you consider a valuable experience in your personal development? This might be a decision you have made, an achievement of which you are particularly proud, or a person who has influenced your life.

Please provide information or experiences working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. What were they? and how did they affect you?

Describe briefly how you have dealt with a personal or academic problem you have encountered.

How did you reach your decision to enter medicine? Describe your participation in any health care or other activities, which reinforced your decision. (Please include any experience involving the care of others.)

Please describe any self-education, research, or independent scholastic work have you undertaken and what do you feel you have accomplished in this work.

If you will not be enrolled as a full-time student during the current academic year, please explain what you will be doing prior to your planned matriculation into medical school.

Please use this space to bring the information contained on your AMCAS application up-to-date. Indicate grades earned, alterations in your proposed course work or graduation date, address changes, additions to your list of activities, and anything else you feel we should know.

Any ideas for #6? I am trying to think about what they are looking for- I have done lots of research, would they want me to explain more on top of what I have down in the AMCAS (like go into detail on my research findings and future directions)? If so, should I talk about other hobbies or things I have educated myself in?

I would like to avoid redundancy, but this question just seems to be asking for it!

Any insights would be much appreciated, thank you!

For number #6 they just want to know what you are doing if you aren't a student. So like "I have a 40-hour job at this company. At this job I do research and oversea two interns. On the side, I also volunteer here and am part of this club." or something like that. You don't have to go into your research -- just what you are doing. I think they want to know that you aren't sitting in your parents basement playing video games until you get accepted into medical school.

For #5 they want the research you undertook, the findings, the future directions, ect... and how this has affected you (made you a better scientist or made you more prepared for medical school). It can be similiar to stuff on AMCAS... but you want to describe more its influences on you -- or atleast that's what I think.

oops I mixed up #5 and #6, but needed help on both, this helps a lot, thank you!

On Question 6 if I am in school, should that one just remain blank, or is there an expectation to fill in what additional activities I will be doing as well?

Question 7 asks: Please use this space to bring the information contained on your AMCAS application up-to-date. Indicate grades earned, alterations in your proposed course work or graduation date, address changes, additions to your list of activities, and anything else you feel we should know.

So if my AMCAS app went in just a month ago and I have nothing to update, do I just leave this blank or is it appropriate to include things like my specific interest in Loyola? Does that fall under "anything else you feel we should know?"

Leave in blank if you are fully enrolled in school.

Do not add why Loyola. the question specifically states to just bring the AMCAS up-to-date. The anything else we feel we should know if more about educational or interesting facts about you -- like if you lived overseas (and couldn't mention that on your AMCAS), why you withdrew from a course three times, or to point out your steady increase in your GPA every year.

I know our responses must be limited to 25 lines, but does anyone know about how many characters that comes out to? Does the app look different after you print it, or are you just counting 25 lines in the text box on the computer as the 25 lines we are allowed to use? SO HARD to make our essays so short!

I haven't seen the secondary this year, but I believe 25 lines = ~260 words or less. I think that is less than 25 lines on a Word document.

I just used Word's count and then when I printed the application it was either the same or a line longer.

Okay, stop me if I'm being too nit-picky but...

This question:

Please provide information or experiences working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. What were they? and how did they affect you?

Seems to be coming up a lot in different applications. I've spent a large part of my undergrad doing community service, so I have a lot of experience here. However, there's that ONE experience that really trumps them all.

so my question is, should I devote the word space to describing the one in detail or use it to mention all of my experiences?

I guess that would depend if the one extremely meaningful experience requires all 25 lines, or if you have a few lines left over afterward to list off all the other experiences at the end

This is the cheesiest secondary ever. The school should spend some money and get a better designed application. A big turn off so far...

Hmmm anyone not receive this one yet??
It's a top choice of mine- and I'm yet to hear anything..

I wouldn't worry, their screen is set low they simply are taking forever to get them out.

Did anyone receive a "complete" email yet? According to my tracking info, they received my secondary days ago. I'm wondering how long it takes for them to verify completeness.

Hey kids:

I remember the massive secondary for Loyola. 😉

A few words of encouragement:
SSOM is totally worth it! It is an amazing medical school experience that made me well prepared for boards and the wards. The facilities and staff are terrific.

My best advice for this secondary is really be yourself. You are going to get asked about the stuff you bring up in it so it is really a time to explain the things that you are really passionate about. :luck:

Hey, yeah thanks--I actually saw that you can "print preview" the app, so I pasted some text in and counted up the 25 lines.. turns out it's approx 2,500 characters (I guess at this stage I should have realized 1 line = ~100 characters!)

All I know is that if I never have to worry about my character count again after this year it will be too soon!

Except you would have worked on it then. Happy belated birthday!

Thanks! And that is pretty much true, yeah... haha. Although I have most of it done already so I wouldn't have had too much to do hopefully

hmm... as long as people like me still don't have it. I'm not going to freak out.

Oftentimes schools send them out in batches, and at this early point, it probably means absolutely nothing that others have gotten the secondary before you.

Hey everyone...

Has anyone received a complete email yet? They received my secondary according to postal tracking on 7/19, and today my status on the website is:

"We have received your secondary application via U.S. mail. Once all required components (letters of recommendation, evaluation inventory form, etc.) have been received in our office, your application will be reviewed by our Committee on Admissions. "

My LOR should be there since they've been into AMCAS since 6/1. Wondering what the "Evaluation inventory form" is...must be something on their part? Basically wondering if anyone is complete yet.

The evaluation inventory form was sent you in the email asking for you to complete the secondary. It was an attached document that you were supposed to send away with the secondary. Basically it was a list stating exactly which letters of recommendations you were wanting Loyola to look at. If you didn't send it away with the secondary I would highly recommend sending it asap.

My status says the same thing. I know I emailed the evaluation inventory inventory form so I don't know why I am not complete.

Assuming we all mailed the Evaluation Form with our Printed App...I think we should be okay.. They probably take time downloading AMCAS LORs...so once that's done, we'll all be complete.

and still nothing...

i only have one more essay to write for Loyola (yay)

Oh right I remember the evaluation inventory form now. All good. Guess we just have to wait now...I think last year interviews didn't come out until middle/end of August.

Anyone finding that the secondary page is not loading right now? I am.

i can't think of anything "worthy" enough to explain for the third question (describe how you dealt with personal/academic problem)

i've been brainstorming for several days.. haven't really come up with anything substantial other than perhaps writing about an incident i encountered as a resident assistant (though i am not sure that falls under a personal or academic problem)

what kind of incidents are you all going with?
