I'm pretty sure interviews are complete for the season. I interviewed on the last possible day (April 7). The admissions committee told us we would be notified of a decision at the earliest on May 13; however, I just logged into the admissions portal and saw that I'm put in the hold category. This is a lot earlier than expected! :-(

Does anyone know what is the purpose of a hold?

Less than three weeks! Very impressive.
But yeah. sorry to hear that ivy2. I can't tell you the deeper *purpose* of the hold pool, but all available evidence points towards it existing as a sort of pre-waitlist. In Venn-diagram terms, there are two concentric circles: the larger (hold pool) contains all the interviewees not rejected or offered admission immediately. (~300 out of 550, maybe?) You can be placed there any time between Thankgiving (raises hand) and the first week of May. The inner group would be the ranked waitlist--if past years' examples hold it will contain ~150 people, and should be complete by May 15th. (Though since that's a Sunday this year, it will more likely come out by Friday... [dramatic pause] the 13th!) It's worth pointing out that the waitlist in recent years has been *much* larger than necessary. A number above 40 should most likely be treated as a rejection.

I'm curious why you got placed on hold so quickly when others have heard nothing at all 0.o

In particular interest to me since I interviewed March 29th and haven't heard anything. Of course I didn't expect to hear anything for awhile but does anyone know why some might be put on hold while others hear nothing at all?

I wouldn't read anything into it (hard as that might be to do.) In Ivy2's case both interviewers had evidently turned in evaluations by last Thursday and one of them was able to attend the Adcom meeting. Other people might hear next week, or even the week after. I haven't kept track of every poster on this thread, but at least in the case of my interview group (October 14th) there didn't seem to be any correlation between folks who heard early (6 weeks, say) and late (10 weeks). There were acceptance and hold decisions throughout.

I interviewed on 4/5 and Katy Guertin told us during the morning meeting that since we were the end of the interview season, if an applicant does hear back before May 13 and are put on hold that means they've made it on to the waitlist. You should call the office to double check, but I distinctly remember her telling us that. Good luck!

I don't know if this adds to what everybody knows but I called the office a couple days ago regarding the hold pool. The lady was very nice and explained to me that OHSU scores each part of the application: grades/mcat, extracurriculars, LOR, interviews, etc. There is a upper and lower threshold score and whoever has a score above it then they get an automatic offer and vice versa for an automatic rejection. The rest of the applicants who are in between scores are put in a hold pool until May. Once OHSU has a good idea of how many spots are left after the people w/ earlier offers have replied, they go down the list based on the score and start sending out acceptances, waitlisted, rejections. Obviously, the higher your score within the hold pool, the better your chances of receiving an acceptance. The waitlist is also ranked. This explains why OHSU does not accept updates after the interview. Once you interview, they have the final score and will only go off of this score. They will not go back to your file and re-assess it.

FYI, I heard at the MD/PhD journal club yesterday that OHSU will start giving less preference to in-state applicants for the MD program. Also, I heard the rural rotation is going to become optional.

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know how late into the cycle they will put your application on hold? i.e. How late into the game will they not put me on hold if they find out I'm retaking the MCAT?

Thanks for any advice OHSU-ers!!

Argh.
That's one way to save money, I guess. (Collecting more OOS tuition, that is.)

I've heard the same info from the chair of a basic-science department...

I guess it makes sense. Increased physician supply (WesternU/COMP-NW) so why be so judicious over who you let in, especially when you consider shrinking budget support from the state?

I predict that they'll relax their preference a bit, but I don't think it's ever going to be a free-for-all for OOS applicants.

Good keep out all those non-Oregonian barbarians :meanie:...(I've recently decided my three or so years in this state is sufficient to classify me as an Oregonian)

Does anyone else still waiting have to constantly combat the urge to type out some all caps rants aimed at venting their impatience and frustration?

Does anyone know: for those of us on hold, should we expect an email informing us of our change in status or are we to be checking the portal? I assume they would send us an email if we had been accepted but wasn't sure about the "refuse" or "waitlist" notices.

I believe that in past years folks who were waitlisted got emails, while those who were rejected got a status update notifying them that a final decision was in the mail. Chuck84 can probably give the gory details.

Last year, rejected was a status update, waitlist was an e-mail, and I would assume any acceptances from now on are by e-mail. Good luck to those still waiting

So, are they on radio silence until everybody gets word? Anything new?

I figured there'd be a last round of acceptance/hold/rejections at the end of this week.
Good luck to anyone who hasn't yet heard.

Less than 2 weeks left! :scared::luck::luck:

I am just getting worked up by all the people who ask me "What's the news?" even though I have been saying for months "Ask me after May 15th." This is as bad as both times I was pregnant and overdue!:laugh:

Ugh I know the closer it gets the more time slows down. If it weren't for school I'd take some vacation time from work and just hibernate in a nyquil induced coma or something until the 13th.

That's not even considering the possibility of getting waitlisted... Do they give you their waitlist ranking immediately or do you have to wait even longer after that? Anybody know?

It looks like last year, waitlisters were informed with their number.

Accepted today, too... Interviewed 3/11. Good luck everyone.

Congrats to anyone who got in! I hope they give more acceptances throughout the week, finding out before May 15th would be amazing.

I have been pretty good about waiting and letting the process run its course but now that it is so close to the end I am wondering where my application stands! I was about to stop checking 2-3x daily and wait until May 15th until I saw the posts and see another round of people have gotten updated. Don't know if I can help myself now...

I am also turning into a facebook stalker, C/O 2015: 38 members, dont know if that means anything or not lol

Depending if I get accepted I will either stay in OR or move to the east coast, I really hope I get to stay!! Good luck to everyone!

On hold 😱 Interviewed 3/29.

The suspense! :xf:

I know I shouldn't be surprised but I don't understand how random the system is when everyone else seems to have gotten SOME response except for me...

I also can't believe they don't send you an email if you've been rejected. Instead of checking my status all the time hoping for good news I'm always just hoping for the absence of bad.

This.

And yes, the randomness is frustrating. Though you stand a very good chance of hearing something today or tomorrow--it seems like the emails and updates go out piecemeal, rather than being part of a automated, once-a-day info dump. Whenever you hear, though, good luck! (And for the rest of us, just 8 more days 'til the wait list comes out!)

Anyone know historically how far OHSU has tapped into their waitlist?

The last post from last year was 31...does anyone know if they made it any further?

I was told that a new admissions committee took over the last year or 2 which resulted in very little waitlist movement.

Accepted today!! Interviewed 3/10
They Made it to 32 last year. I was 45.
Good luck to everyone still waiting. It's a very painful process!

Do you know where the Facebook page is? Apparently I can't find it!

It's not just you. Interviewed back in February...still no word. I'm getting to the point where I just might withdraw before I even hear the decision because I want to finally know where I'm ending up...

eggmanMD- I interviewed the same day as you. Do you remember being told that if we were put on hold then it means we've made it on to the waitlist since we were at the end of the interview cycle?

I remember them saying that if we are put on hold that we are *probably* on the waitlist. However last year when I interviewed they said that most people get a "hold" status, then get told of accept/waitlist/rejected status on 5/15. Who knows. Good luck!

You've raised my expectations and dashed them quite expertly, sir. Bravo. 😛

No word yet. *sigh*

Tinny Tim!

So you don't need to be reminded that admission decision or not, each day that passes brings us one step closer to the grave?

...to see if someone has posted he/she received notification?

Me: this is #3...sososo guilty of it.

Hah I get email notifications so that way I can obsessively check this forum while I'm obsessively checking for school status updates 🙂

Ahhh I don't like checking the portal anymore...speeds my heart up to too much each time! So instead I prefer the passive alternative of checking this forum and email.

I no longer check the portal. I am depending on y'all to inform me of when decisions come out! Every time I see there are unread posts in my OHSU subscription, my heart pounds a little bit. False alarm, today!! Le sigh.

Mashers: Out of curiosity, where are you from in Northern California?

Hi everyone, first time posting here. The pre-med advisor at my school sent out this email yesterday:

"The end is near and final decisions will be made in the next few days. Here is what OHSU said today when I asked:
We still have a few more to give. We are working through the last group now and will be sending out all of our remaining acceptances along with alternate list rankings by end of this week. "

I was previously under the impression that all the class seats have already been filled. Hope this helps clarify things for anyone who was previously confused like me. Good luck everyone 🙂
