I've emailed some people on the student hosting list but no reply.. Do the hotels in the area give discounts for med students interviewing? Which ones did you guys stay at??

I personally stayed at the Red Roof Inn, like a 10-15 minute drive away. In the time I went, it was the cheapest room (like $58 with taxes and everything) and had internet (as a college student who needed to get some projects done the night before, important). I had a car, so this isn't something if you don't.

Only thing: it's not THAT close to the campus, you have to pay for parking, and is somewhat by some restaurants. A car, a GPS, and a practice run to get to the campus the night before is recommended.

I also realized I posted this like 5 days after you asked, so it won't probably be worth anything. Meh.

terbum, I think that information is very helpful. It may come in handy to someone applying in the future years. I stayed at Parkview Hotel - very nice staff. Nice room, free wireless. It was about 80$, after tax it was around 100$ if I recall. No complimentary breakfast, but there was a cafe in the lobby where you can buy some. It was also within walking distance of the school, but I was picked up by the hotel shuttle for free (all you have to do is call the hotel in advance). That shuttle also took me to the campus for free on the morning of my interview. Many hotels there offer a free shuttle, be sure to ask!

Maybe this will help other people:
Application complete: 11/18/10
Invitation to interview: 11/29/10
Interview: 1/31/11
Acceptance: 2/11/11

Good luck guys!

App complete: 10/8/10 😕
Interview Invite: 11/29/10 😳
Interview: 1/19/11:scared:
Accepted: 2/11/1😀

congrats on all the new acceptances, I'm still all alone here on the HPA. I hope I don't perish on this god-forsaken list.

I too was put on the HPA today. Any idea on how fast this thing is expected to move?

not sure, but I'm still waiting anxiously to call in may to see what position I am in. I am quite concerned that I'm not in a great spot since I was waitlisted early. Those individuals waitlisted later on may have had a good enough score to be accepted early in the cycle when the interviewing started and there were plenty of spots available.

Hello Friends,

Just received an invite 🙂 So excited 🙂

Can you please tell me what are the chances of getting in interviewing this late in the cycle?

Thank you

Received the interview invite last night as well. Very surprised. I was not expecting anything since I have been on pre-interview hold since the fall (and based on the grim hold e-mail). Extremely excited at the opportunity.

For those who are curious, there were only four dates left on the interview calendar to choose from: one in February, three in March.

Wow, that's a nice surprise! Make sure you give yourself enough time to write those essays they ask for. It looks like not everyone on hold gets rejected. I hope you get into a SUNY, if you haven't already.🙂

Thanks! Good luck with the Buffalo movement for you as well.

I haven't heard back from any SUNYs until last night, so its a big opportunity. I will need to upload the essays before the weekend though, so I'm hoping to knock out a draft tonight and then revise for another day or two.

"Smith says the three SUNY teaching hospitals – in Brooklyn, Long Island and Syracuse – would lose their $154 million dollar state subsidy, as well as reductions in Medicaid spending the governor is calling for." -Andrew Cuomo's new budget plan.

I don't know what this will mean for us and our tuition, but I don't think it can be good... 🙁

Happened to be glancing through here, thought I'd let you know that they are fighting the proposal, but there will definitely be further funding cuts. The administration is preparing for it, and at this point only receives about 6% of its budget from the state. They'll get by.

As far as tuition, it will definitely be going up, but that is independent of the hospital budget and is set by SUNY at the state level. As such, all the campuses will be affected equally. The President has assured us that if it were up to him tuition wouldn't go up, but unfortunately it is not. Expect tuition to rise continuously while you are in school. When I started tuition was $18,800 per year, now it is $24,400, about a 30% increase over two years. Lowest proposal, but the SUNY student assembly, was something like 5.5%. More likely next year will be 9-12%. The bulk of that goes to fill in state budget gaps, not supporting the school. Regardless, it is still cheaper than just about any private school, and many state schools, so I can't complain too much. Just be aware of it so you aren't surprised in a year...

Anyway, good luck, and I look forward to seeing some of you next year!

First, I'm sorry to be asking this question as I'm sure it's been answered before more than once. I couldn't find the answer by using the search function or scrolling through the thread.

Do OOS students receive IS tuition after one year of attendance, or is it OOS tuition for all four years?
Thanks!

Any one got placed on hold for interview?
Any one on the hold list got an interview?
Anyways, it is so weird. My friend interviewed at Upstate and got accepted but didn't even get an interview to Downstate yet.
I interviewed and got accepted to Downstate, but no interview to Upstate yet. I guess a lot depends on chance and what stands out in the application... And who reads it..

Anyways, it is so weird.

It's really to be expected. When you have thousands of applicants for a hundred seats there's going to be a huge variance in responses from schools. Some schools may take into account who they think will actually attend as well, which I got the feeling Downstate does.

Yeah but the post you quoted made a point. It all depends on who reads your app. There is a lot of subjectiveness because it depends on how a particular committee member may feel about you vs. another committee member. Some will be more sympathetic while others won't. So it depends on who is reading your app that day.

Oh I didn't mean to say it wasn't subjective - that was actually part of my point by saying there will be huge variances in responses. With such a crazy number of people applying for such a limited number of seats, there is simply no way it will be done without some randomness.

Complete early August (I think)
Pre-Inveriew Hold November
Interview Invite Jan 31
Interview 2/16

OOS
3.7 GPA
MCAT 35

I can confirm that OOS get IS tuition after the first year. Really enjoyed both my interviews. Other places say they have "relaxed" interviews... but here it really was a very personal conversation. The fact that it is closed file probably has a bearing on that as well.

You can get in state tuition quite easily after first year, but they don't just give it to you, you need to establish residency.

any idea how they sort out waitlists? do they assign each person a # after all interviews are done in april?

i think ppl have their # prior to april, but you have to wait until may to call and ask. are you on the HPA list?

woohoo! Interview 3/8!

Pre-interview hold since 10/12. Out of state.

Application Status: Decision Made

Well, looks like that'll pretty much wrap it up for me 🙁 Pre-interview hold since 11/2

Sorry to hear that.🙁 I know Guju was rooting for you.

If it makes you feel any better, I got rejected from Upstate pre-interview a few weeks ago. I'm in state, and have decent stats. I hope you get in somewhere else, if you haven't already.

rejected today, pre-interview hold a few months ago. no love

Also rejected off pre-interview hold today. Really wanted interview here.

Prateek,

Sorry to hear. I was soooooooooooooooo rooting for you. Was still reading this thread precisely because i was hoping you would get an invite. Hopefully you get in somewhere else.

Yea I knew this University was a bit of a long-shot as an OOS student with a relatively late application 🙁 Still have my upcoming GWU interview to bank on!

Thanks so much for the support Guju <3

Hi everybody -

I'm scheduled for an interview on Tuesday 3/08. Is anybody willing to swap for 3/09?

(for anybody who's curious: the admissions office said all interview dates are full - I believe 03/09 is the very last one)

Thanks for your help,
Yoni

Do you guys think that a late interview here = lower odds of outright acceptance? I'm excited for my interview on Monday, but I'm worried that being an OOS applicant interviewing so late doesn't bode well for my chances here. Comments? Encouragement? Typical SDN non-sequitur ad hominem attacks? 😛 Thanks.

I am also scheduled for the same day.
Are you sure 3/09 is the last date for interviews? I thought upstate interviewed into April.

People have been saying that in the thread, but when I scheduled my interview earlier in the month there was only one date in February and the three dates in March: 7-9th. The only other possibility that I can imagine is if they do actually into into April, that maybe only a few dates are available at a time? Can anyone who interviewed much earlier in the year comment on how far into the future could one schedule an interview?

How likely is it to get off the HPA list?

On interview day they told us to call sometime in May and they will be able to give you a generally accurate answer of where you are in the list and the likelihood of being pulled off. They did say they usually make it half way through the list.

Hey,

Does anyone know how much weight they put on the essays we submit? How firm are they on their deadlines for essay? I will seriously like to improve one of my essays. I can still see that the submission page is open. Please let me know.

Thank you.

I'd say put effort into it and write a good essay, but I doubt it's going to make or break you. Also, I'd strongly suggest you submit them on time unless you have a compelling reason not to do so.

From my experience, the essays were HUGE at this school. I think they played a huge role in my acceptance. I wish I could have given my two essays to other schools because of how well received they were by the interviewers.

Keep in mind that the essays are the ONLY info the interviewer has on you and will shape your conversation with him or her.

Okay, experiences definitely vary. There are people who don't really speak much about their essays, and apparently, situations like the poster above. So, to reiterate, err on the safe side and put a good amount of effort into it.

write good essays. both of my interviewers commented on how well written my essays were. i got in. i dont think it can make or break your chances but it sets a positive tone for the interview and can result in good interview reviews which may lead to an acceptance.

My interview is on 7th. Unfortunately I have been busy with school and travelling for other interviews so didn't have time on my side. I know this is a classical reason. I submitted my essay yesterday. But I am not happy with one of them 🙁

Speak with admissions about submitting them later than the 1 week deadline then if you are that worried. Also at this point, people are getting invites very close to their interview date, so they don't have the abundance of time earlier interviewees had and they are aware of this.

HPA list this morning, interviewed mid February. The waiting continues...

Hpa for me too... this happened to me at albany too. I am not happy about not having a def spot close to home...I rlly wanted upstate...
