I hope your negative attitude changes before you are ever allowed anywhere near a patient.

I hope they stop your intolerance before they let you anywhere near a patient! Furthermore, I hope you have information before you make more uninformed statements before they let you anywhere near a patient!

Edit: After seeing your posting history, I'm going to refrain from commenting.

Does anyone know the approximate percentages of Binghamton to Syracuse students or does it change every year? I was hoping for Binghamton because it was for people who want family practice but Syracuse is suppose to be the hub for the R-Med program. Thoughts?

Also did anyone else hear about the international trips? Or are those relatively new this year?

1/4 of the class goes to Binghamton according to the info packet. It sounded like most people get what they want if they are accepted outright and the only time the choice becomes an issue is if you get in off the waitlist.

This is a racist school, its acceptance of minorities is horrible.
Not true!

According to the 2011-2012 MSAR, Matriculant's Self-Reported Race/Ethnicity for Black (2009-2010 First Year Class):
SUNY Upstate: 23%
SUNY Downstate:18%
SUNY Stony Brook: 9%
SUNY Buffalo: 5%

I would highly recommend a copy of MSAR if you don't already have one.

SUNY Downstate Total Hispanic 17% & 12% for Other Hispanic
SUNY Stony Brook Total Hispanic 6% & 4% Other Hispanic
SUNY Buffalo Total Hispanic 1%, 0% Other Hispanic
Suny Upstate Total Hispanic 5% & 2% for Other Hispanic

You better throw in the other school to hide the fact that SUNY Upstate is racist.

Blacks percentage of NY State 16%
Hispanics percentage of NY State 17%

SUNY Upstate African American 20/160 = 12.5%
SUNY Upstate Hispanic 3/160 = 1.8%

The funny thing is when you meet all the immature students interviewing you see that they are giving African American slots to foreign born students and well Hispanics, the numbers are clear. Another thing about interviewing you see school fix numbers, like there Board Step 1 scores they throw in Canadian students to make their scores look higher. Med school are always fixing their numbers to hide the fact that the same old revolving door that is destroying medicine in this country continues.

I don't know the actual numbers. NYR said 1/4, that sounds reasonable. But just wanted to chime in for anyone thinking about this and reiterate that Binghamton isn't necessarily the primary care place and Syracuse the specialty place. Plenty of people who plan to go into non-family practice stay in Syracuse, and there are RMED people in Syracuse also! So, don't feel like, if you want to do family practice or RMED you have to go to Binghamton.

I don't want to feed the troll, but just a perfunctory statement that obviously, this is all completely uninformed BS. The definition of underrepresented is..underrepresented. You would be hard pressed to find any non-HBCU school where the state african american/hispanic/native american population percentage = the school's %. That's what underrepresented means.

I can't really make any sense of the rest of your rambling, if there is any sense to be found.

I'm not a blinded cheerleader for my school. There are valid critiques to make about it and reasons for/against coming just like anywhere else, however, this isn't one of them.

my advisor told me on average 10-15% of the attending class is from waitlist, and their waitlist is about 2-3x their class size...

I'm pretty sure that's not true. They have gotten through the HPA list in the past (few years ago) and gotten onto the hold by committee alternate list. I don't see how it's possible for them to go through the whole list if it's 2-3x the class size. Your adviser must be mistaken.

whole list as in HPA + regular waitlist.
During the interview day, the dean mentioned that in the past 10 years, they took a total of like 2 people off the regular waitlist... So i guess that means the Waitlist is much bigger than the HPA?

my advisor read it directly from the book of waitlists haha

Oh...I would say that you're odds are not great if you're on the hold by committee alternate list...I personally would consider it a rejection (sorry).

At our interview day, she also said the 2 in 10 years thing about the hold list, but those 2 were both from 8 years ago she also said, and was rather clear that hold is not a good status to be on. However, she said they usually make it half way through the high priority list.

This is the best news about hpa I have heard all week 🙂)))

Good luck! I'm still waiting to hear back after interviewing. Another thing I'll relay to you from her, was to call sometime after all the interviews are done to see where you are on the HPA, because she can give you an honest estimate of your chances based on the last few years and what rank you're at.

I interviewed on Feb 21st, and I remember the dean saying that decisions would be out in 2-3 weeks, and to call if we haven't heard anything. Is this true, and if so has anyone called?

Congrats on the acceptance! It's amazing that it took so long for you to get in somewhere, given your stats.

They said to call if you hadn't heard by four weeks.

No need to worry yet. If you look above, someone who interviewed on the 16th heard back this past Friday.

Hi,

What are the average rent rates for syracuse? And how much is the on campus housing? Is it a dorm or apartment style? It has been a while since I interviewed so I forgot all this information. Please refresh my memory. Thanks

Clark tower is the on campus housing. It's dorm style living, and here's a link to the rates http://www.upstate.edu/currentstudents/campuslife/residence/rates/.

As far as the average rent rates, it's really variable. Most people live in one of two nearby apartment towers (Jefferson and Madison) and I think the going rate is around 700 for a 1 bedroom? I'm not 100%, as I dont live there, so hoping someone chimes in if I'm wrong.

That's the 30 second answer. There are of course, cheaper and more expensive options depending on your taste/preferences.

Why do most people live off campus? Are the dorms that bad? Also is it too late now to look for an apartment?

I think the primary reason is that they're basically dorms. Shared bathrooms and all that stuff is not for everyone. Also, they're expensive relative to most of the other available housing. But if you don't mind the dorm style living, you can't really beat the proximity.

Definitely not too late to find an apartment. But Jefferson and Madison fill up quickly, and I'm pretty sure there are generally waiting lists. So if you want to live in one of those two, I'd fill out an application and get on it now.

Thanks. I found it odd that at some schools, the students were raving about the dorms, and some of those had 4 or 6 people to a room (no thanks), yet at Upstate where it's all singles and doubles the students were recommending going to apartments. I found it odd, but I think that reflects the options.

Basically at schools where apartments are easily available at the same or lower rate people suggest apartments, but when dorms are much cheaper or only real option the tour guides try to claim how awesome the dorms are, though it's probably them trying too hard to sell the school. (Seriously who really wants to have four roommates in a tiny apartment?)

I'll probably choose to live in the dorms. Maybe I'll check em out when I go to second look, but the convenience probably beats out the bigger size of a real apartment, especially in the winter when it's snowing every day.

No problem. I haven't been inside the rooms, but I have friends who live in Clark and I haven't heard any complaints from those who wanted to do the dorm life. A lot of them are also going to be living there next year too, so I'm assuming it's nice enough in there. And yeah, it is extremely convenient. It's literally right next door to the Campus Activities Building (which has the gym, pool, and other stuff), and a really really short walk to class.

Accepted!!

First MD acceptance, couldn't be more excited. Thanks for all the information and support throughout the last 2 application cycles SDN and the excellent people that populate this forum. Good luck to you all.

Although Clark does have some dorm rooms, they also have studio and 2 bedroom apartments.

Hi everyone! Has anyone who interviewed on the 2nd of March heard anything from Upstate?

Hi everyone! Has anyone who interviewed on the 2nd of March heard anything from Upstate?

I interviewed on the 21st, and still haven't heard anything (>4 weeks). I called them last week and apparently they were having a major file review yesterday.

Hey,

I interviewed on March 7th, but haven't anything yet. Meanwhile I received a $17,000 research scholarship to pursue grad studies. I am more than likely to not use it, but is this a valid update that I can give the school?

Received my packet today, two weeks after the acceptance email. =)

So I just randomly checked my status page for the first time in months and it says "Decision Made." Anyone know if this means I'll hear something within the next couple days or do they take a while to let you know the decision?

I interviewed at the beginning of March, btw.

I just checked my status also and it says the same thing...this is making me even more nervous. I have no clue how long it is going to take them to tell us what the darn decision is...

(btw: I interviewed at the beginning of March also)

I'm definitely feeling the nerves too.... The director of admissions did say we'd hear in 3-4 weeks, so all signs point to a decision almost definitely coming this week. I was just hoping "decision made" means "expect an email in 24hrs." probably wishful thinking....

I interviewed 5 weeks ago on February 21st, and there is still no update on my status. 😕 It just says "congratulations on being accepted for an interview"...

Received the acceptance email earlier today! I am too shocked to know what to say right now... 😱 First MD acceptance..

To everyone who is still waiting, I wish you all the best of luck:luck:!

Hmm, I went and read some of the comments about that course and it's clear that the medical literature course, which is required for an upstate diploma, is indeed detracting from the students' ability to perform well in their away rotations, and therefore has a direct impact on how well they match. I hope this gets sorted out.

So I don't want to post my heard it through the grapevine hearsay here, but I think it's safe to say it's currently being revised/looked at in a meaningful way (I'll toss in a 'supposedly' for the cynics out there). I don't think anyone really knows what will happen with it for classes down the line at this point yet, though.
