Does anyone know which apartments UAB med students live in? I know that technically, I can live wherever I want, but I would prefer to be in an apartment complex with a lot of med students/grad students. So I would appreciate someone listing places in Vestavia Hills, Hoover, and Homewood.

I personally like Grand Highlands at Mountain Brook.
It's quiet, big (albiet a little pricey), and has a mix of med students, grad students, undergrads, nurses, doctors, and professionals. I have a roommate and we pay $795 a month for a 2 bed/2 bath. It's nestled a mile-ish off 280 in a lovely, safe area and only takes about 15 minutes to get to UAB. It usually takes 30 minutes to get home because 280 traffic is a nightmare.

If you want to live closer to campus you could also try the free service Select My Space (www.selectmyspace.com). I toured some apartments with them in the Highland/Forest Park area and was less then excited about the quality, but I've known several people who have been very happy.

I've also known several people who lived at Mayfair in Homewood that have been very happy. The only place that I've bad things about is University Place in Southside. It's expensive, small, and not well kept.

So today is the last interview day. I hope they get moving on the waitlist soon.

Just got my email, so I'm guessing they're moving pretty quickly now that all the interviews are over.

What kind of email did you get? Weren't you the person who said you didn't interview with UAB? Sorry, just a little confused.

McScoots, Calfox, - Congratulations to you both! Did you interview this week?

Is this the end of the "pre-waitlist acceptances🙁?"

I got an acceptance email. I interviewed on March 3, I was just didn't understand how the waitlist worked, so I asked.

I interviewed Feb 3rd. I don't know whether it's the end of pre-waitlist acceptances. Good luck to everyone! Hope to see you in the fall!

Do either one of you two mind posting your stats? Just trying to get an idea of where the bar is at this point. Thanks and congrats again.

Thanks. GPA: 3.1 (undergrad) 3.7 (graduate) MCAT: 30 IS

Good luck to everyone. For what it's worth, one of the students told us that for the past few years about half of the wait list has gotten in.

Thanks. Undergrad GPA 3.6 (non-science), Post bac 4.0, MCAT 32, OOS.

Does anyone know how many people have gotten accepted or how many spots in that class are left!? Been waiting since December...so tired!

🙂

They've filled the class. I'm sure they'll have some acceptances withdraw before the waitlist is made though.

How do you know this? I interviewed in October and haven't heard anything. 3.4/ 35Q/ IS.

Dr. Smith mentioned it during the interview day last week.

Did he mention when the waitlist will come out?

Just saw your post. No, sorry I don't remember him saying when the waitlist would be out. I'm willing to bet it will be out by the beginning of April though.

Anybody heard anything? There was a post on the USA thread that suggested it might be another slow process🙁. Is next week too soon to be hoping for???

Anyone think a letter of interest would help at this point? I don't really have any new information since I just work and volunteer at the same place that was originally on my application.

I'm fairly certain that you already have a score attached to your file and acceptances are issued based entirely off that score.

It's a state university, so they have to be particularly transparent and consistent in how they handle the admissions/waitlist process. Note that I never said fair.

Thus, sending a letter, while undoubtedly appreciated by the staff is unlikely to help you.

I say it falls in the 'can't hurt' category. Write the letter, send the letter, and avoid having any regrets later on.

Best Wishes,

Peaches.:luck:

does uab send out secondaries to all applicants or do they screen after receiving the primary app? I am in state applying this summer, planning on turning in primary early june but i am think about retaking mcat 8/1. I am not sure if uab will send me the secondary apps after looking at my mcat retake or after i turn in my primary, anyone know?

According to MSAR, they send secondaries to screened applicants. You might get one before your score is released, but I would bet that they won't seriously review it until your score is available.

Why not take the MCAT earlier than August?

Thanks! Wrote and sent!

Hope to hear about the waitlist soon. :luck: to all those waiting with me!

Why not take the MCAT earlier than August?

i think early august is the only date other than mid june that have an afternoon test time and I am not a morning person at all. I got 31 the first time but I didnt finish thats why i am retaking it. My parents say since I already got a decent score I should just apply early but spend more time to study so I can get that 33+ I wanted to compensate my low gpa.

What do you mean you didn't finish?

The past two years UAB hasn't even sent out it's secondary application until mid/late August so I wouldn't worry about it. I'm also pretty sure they don't screen primary applications and a 31 is definitely not going to hurt you. Last year, I had a 26. I got an interview and was waitlisted. Just my 2 cents, though.

so I was getting 11-12 on practice mcat BS section, but on the real thing i misjudged the length of the passages and had to randomly guess on like 10 questions, still end up with a 9. I emailed Dr. Smith but apparently he is out of office this week

That happened to me on the PS section. When I e-mailed Dr. Smith he told me that the average for successful applicants is 30 with no section below 8.

anybody have any insights into when this waitlist/final decisionsnotifications could be coming to us? hope its this week

I was looking through some of the older threads earlier to see what week the waitlist came out for them. Most years it seemed to be this coming week, but last year, I believe it was a week later.

If it will be a repeat of last year, probably not until next week. 🙁

Reading through last year's thread, some posters suggested the delay might have been due to the blind interviews. If last year was the first time for blind interviews, maybe they figured out the problem and this year's will be out sooner.

Does anyone know when UAB will be sending out rejections. I haven't been invited for an interview and from what I remember the interview season for UAB is already done. Maybe it will be whenever they send out the last batch of acceptances and the waitlist....

Yeah they will send the waitlist e-mails and rejections all at once.

I really wish they gave us a date/time that final decisions were coming so everytime I get an email my heart doesnt skip a beat

A friend of mine was notified not too long ago that he was accepted, so maybe all final decisions are coming!

he made it sound like today

Wow,
So maybe they are still deciding who to accept. I figured they were just trying to figure out the alternate list right now. We will see soon enough I'm sure.

yeah i was thinking the samething, the facebook group is unusually small for the interview season to be over so maybe they are still deciding on acceptances

I was thinking that the group was small because people who hold multiple acceptances were waiting on Financial Aid/Scholarship packages before making a final decision...

...either way, its all speculation...

Decisions are supposed to be made available (either on your secondary application or via email) by this Friday, April 1st and they will tell you if you're accepted, weightlisted, or rejected.

They have given all their interview spots out this year, so if you haven't been asked, you won't be getting one this year.

Does anyone know how big UAB's alternate list is?

I think that it varies a bit from year to year, but I was on it last year and I think it was just under 100. I believe they accepted just under 70 off of it though, so you have a decent chance, especially if you are upper or middle third.

In case you want exact numbers. This was from my 2010 rejection e-mail...

This year 2410 students applied, 405 were interviewed and 265 acceptances were offered to fill the 176 positions. Of the 98 students placed on the alternate list, 68 were offered a position at UASOM and 8 of the remaining alternates were accepted elsewhere.

Double thanks! I wish UAB was a little more receptive to inquiries about this information. They kind of give a, "Please, no calls regarding anything to do with your application or really anything to do with anything. Thanks-Mgmt" vibe. :eyebrow:
