Miami received my 2nd MCAT score sometime around mid-September...Considering it has been 2 months without word, should I take this as a sign of a silent rejection??

Thanks everyone!

In this situation, I would either email the school for a status check or email them an update letter/letter of interest. It's definitely not necessarily a silent rejection though!

I just interviewed this week and loved it!

Does anyone know about how many students get accepted/waitlisted this early in the interview game? I think I remember someone telling me they try to fill the class by December. I'm not sure if this is correct.

I'm hoping if so this gives me a better chance of not being waitlisted right off the bat.

how long does it take for admissions to reply to a status check email? I sent one in wednesday afternoon and have not heard from them yet.

Hi Sonic,

The admissions office receives hundreds of emails daily and has a limited staff so it takes a while to answer them all. Your best bet is to call the office directly and they can tell you over the phone.

At this point they have accepted approximately 1/3 of the incoming class for both the MD and MD/MPH program. By late December/early January they have accepted a number of students that is equal to the number of seats available in the class, and so therefore cannot accept any more until people relinquish their acceptances and spots open up.

Having said that, on April 15th when everyone has to commit to 1 program, we will give out more acceptances than any other day as people relinquish their spots at UM.

Does Miami give any preferance to student who attended undergrad there?
I know you were talking about a point system is there any points you possibly get?

Miami gives points in the following areas: Activities and Life experiences, Direct Patient experiences, and LORs. We don't give any points for being a UM undergrad specifically. I can also tell you that we give the most points for patient experiences relative to the other categories, so make sure to emphasize that on your application.

I'm reallllllyyy confused as to the interview day. I was awarded both an MD and MD/MPH interview, and my confirmation email states that I have to be at the medical school campus one day, and then palm beach county the next. Does that mean I have two separate interviews, or is the second day just a tour of the other campus?

Can anyone clarify the whole situation with MD and MD/MPH. I have to find out if I need to rent a car or not...

I also got invited to interview for the MD/MPH program. The interview in Miami is on the Monday and the other is on the Tuesday in another regional campus (mine is in Boca Raton). I am thinking of just doing the rail system instead of dealing with a car. My understanding is that the first day is to decide whether you qualify for the MD program, and the second day is whether or not they think you can do the MD/MPH. Apparently they are completely separate from one another since someone on SDN got accepted into only the MD/MPH and not the MD.... which is crazy, but cool too.

yeah its hard to tell. I wonder if the system has changed since Dr. Hinkley left.

I remember going to one of these med school forums some years ago when Dr. H was still in charge of MD admissions before retiring. He said that Miami used this point system that was designated by 3 committee members per application.

45 though they then changed it to 50 points for GPA + MCAT
15 points for ECs
15 points for letters
10 points for adversity faced

Or something like that. I think there was one more category but don't ask me to remember.

But that as also when Miami screened based on 3.5+ for postbac in state residents or otherwise 3.2 for in state residents and 3.6+ for out of state residents. however, in state and out of state screening for secondaries stopped. But I don't know if the point system above stopped.

It used to be that they gave a point designation according to what I wrote above and that would determine how far down the line you were to get an interview so if you were too far down the line no letter of interest would really help. I however question whether things have changed at Umiami since those days. I did send a letter of update/interest to them myself just the other day. i've heard nothing. Last time I was rejected at the very end of the cycle. But then there was a friend of mine who didn't hear about interviews til end of winter or early spring. Got interviewed in December at one Miami campus and January at the other. Of course now there's only one Miami campus. But my point is you don't really know when or if they'll call you. You can try to update them as I did. But I sometimes find myself questioning whether it makes a difference when it seems they score each application based on the application and amcas app and letters and that score seems to be the real determining factor of whether one gets an interview or not.

But who knows. Its at this point my speculation that it won't make a difference. But you can always try as I did. I have not gotten a response from Miami yet. So maybe I should call tomorrow and ask whether they accept updates and what my status is.

I should clarify. I did not suggest it necessarily as a way to boost your application. I suggested it because I know that although schools are supposed to be automatically updated on your new scores, they may not notice this fact unless it is brought to their attention. These schools are busy with so many applications, so it may have slipped by unnoticed that your score did come in and that you should be placed under review. I was in a similar situation last year (not with Miami that I know of though) where I emailed a school for a status update and they had never placed my file under review because they were unaware of certain "automatic updates" to my file.

I just interviewed on Tuesday. There is only ONE interview. Some of the students for MD/MPH interview Monday, and others on Tuesday. They said they do this so that the faculty in the regional campus have more of a say in the admissions process (and they were all SUPER nice) They schedule you for both days because they want to give you tours of both Miami (where you would complete years 1,2 and possibly 4) and also to show you the facilities that you will be training in during your third year if you are going MD/MPH. The third year for the dual degree program is more public health oriented, and personally I thought it looked extremely beneficial. Some of the students said they worked more closely with the doctors, even one-on-one, which is an advantage over the main campus.

I would def recommend going both days if you are truly interested in the program. It looks awesome. You can't beat a master's and a MD all in 4 years. It is expensive though. $50,000/year just in tuition!😱

Hope this helps! Good luck.

And also don't they give points based on GPA and MCAT?

Or was your main point to show that for outside fo the numerical stats the rest is for the other categories and not where you went to school?

Do you know if the point system pretty much means letters of interest/update are pretty much useless unless you've interviewed???

Thanks in advance.

Yes both your GPA and MCAT score also weigh into both the decision to interview and the decision to accept (obviously), but my point was that residency status plays no major part in the decision process.

Having said that, each year we end up enrolling a class with approx. 30% out of state students.

Letters of interest and update can help, mostly to receive an interview or to be accepted off the alternate list. But keep in mind that it helps to offer some type of new information about yourself that is not already included in your completed application.

Everything you pointed out is correct except for the tuition. It is actually $39,500/year for tuition which is the same as our out of state tuition for the regular MD program.

Thank you for correcting me. I was freaking out about the money..I must have remembered the wrong figure. It's still expensive but I am happy it's about $40,000 less than I originally thought for 4 years 🙂

for those who've used the rail system to go to boca raton, how was it? this may seem like a dumb question, but is it safe/convenient enough to drag a piece of luggage with you on the train?

also -- are there student hosts at the boca raton campus?

THANKS! So, just to clarify, one interview during the two days and it may be either at the Miami campus OR the Boca Raton campus? How long are each of the days? Is the day where you aren't interviewed structured with other things?

Also, are there student hosts at either of the campuses? How did you get from the Miami campus to the regional campus? I am thinking about taking the rail system.

And in terms of the tuition- someone else told me that even though the program is over 4 years, you have to pay an extra year of tuition? Has anyone else heard this? I have yet to verify this information and it hasn't been easy to find online anywhere.

I think thats all my questions for now 🙂

Yep. One Interview. In Miami they are scheduled throughout the day around tours and such. In Palm Beach, they are at 8 am. In Miami, the day was from 8:30 until about 1:30. In Palm Beach I got there at 8 and left around 1 pm. The interviews are scheduled for about an hour. Mine only lasted about 30 minutes which kind of made me nervous. Everyone had good things to say about their interview though.

I am from Tampa, so I drove and stayed in hotels. I believe there is a host program. When they send you an interview confirmation there is info about housing.

I have not heard anything about an extra year of tuition and I doubt that is true.

HOPEFULLY I find out tomorrow if I got in. My stomach is in knots.

Good luck!

First off, is there anyway to know whether you have been invited for an MD or an MD/MPH interview? I applied to both, have been invited to interview, but they don't specify for which program.

Also, are there are set of questions that anyone has found that they generally ask, or is it super random for different interviewers?

Thanks!

There is no boca raton campus anymore. Boca raton campus is what used to be Miami's affiliation with FAU. FAU however is now going to be its own medical school.

So it is only main campus that is now UMiami.

On a side note I learned today from someone in USF MD admissions that Dr. Robert Hinkley, UMiami's former MD admissions Dean is returning to the role for FAU's new med school out of retirement. That made my day cuz I love him to death and so did those who were accepted into Miami in his reign as MD admissions dean and those who were studens of his in his days at Miami. 🙂

My interview invite email:

Congratulations! You have been selected for an interview at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Since you expressed an interest in the MD/MPH program, your interview will take place over two consecutive days at our campus in Miami and at our regional campus in Boca Raton.

Interviews will take place on Mondays in Miami and Tuesdays in Boca Raton. During your visit, you will have ample opportunity to see our facilities and speak with some of our medical students at an informal luncheon. You will also have an opportunity to meet with the staff from the Office of Student Financial Assistance and find out how to finance your medical education. In short, we’ve planned a couple of days for you in which you can learn as much as possible about our medical campus in Miami and our regional campus in Boca Raton.

So.... looks like there is a campus at Boca Raton (I am not crazy, I knew I read it!)

And I never got any information in the email about housing. I swear they send different emails to everyone... haha. I'll call admissions and figure it out but when I called before they said it was in Boca Raton, so that definitely exists.

i got my itinerary straightened out today, and:

- they have an 'overnight student host program' in miami and an 'overnight host program' in palm beach (or boynton beach/boca raton?) this is included in the document they send you. i decided to stay at a hotel in palm beach.
- i'm taking the tri-rail system for sure (metrorail transfer in miami --> boynton beach station, if i'm not mistaken)

they forgot to include the e-mail of the head of the student host program in my interview confirmation document, but i just called them and they gave me the e-mail. the students have been really prompt in replying back on whether they can host me or not. 🙂

Let me clear up some points about the MD/MPH program.

1. As most of you have realized, we no longer have a campus in Boca Raton as we used to. What we have now is a Regional Medical Campus (RMC). that is housed primarily at JFK Hospital which is in the city of Atlantis, and that is likely where your MD/MPH interview will take place if you are to interview at the RMC.

2. The tuition for the MD/MPH program is approx. $39,000/year. There is no extra charge for an extra year of school. You are basically charged 4 years of tuition comparable to what is charged to non-FL residents.

3. If you applied to both the MD and MD/MPH programs and have filled out the secondary application for both, then your interview is for both of these programs. Your file, however, will be considered independently for each of those programs (i.e. you will be considered twice, once for each program).

4. Dr. Hinkley will indeed be (or already is, rather) the new Dean of Admissions for FAU's new medical school. He is not affiliated with UM or the new MD/MPH program, just so no one floods him with questions about it.

So I finally got the phone call today! Accepted!!!!!🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂:laugh::laugh:

what is miami's grading policy?

You get a number grade and the average/grade distribution is posted on a bulletin board for each exam/class/module so you have an idea where you stand compared to the rest of the class. Your final module grade and an average is all that will appear on your transcript. There are no ABC grades or "Honors, High Pass, Pass" types of grades though and I personally think it's a good system (most if not all in my class would agree). Grades are essentially de-emphasized without being made meaningless, so it motivates people to study while really not fostering a "negatively" competitive atmosphere at all.

Was there a separate secondary for the MD/MPH program?

When did you all who were accepted yesterday interview??

I interviewed Nov. 12th, but not everyone should have found out yesterday, they said that yesterday would be the first day we we're eligible to get the call - if our interviewer was "OCD" and got everything in right away.
Otherwise they said we wouldn't hear until most likely Dec. 8th.
Don't know when you interviewed, but I hope that helps!

:luck:

I interviewed the 16th at the regional campus. They told us the same... So hopefully the 8th?

Congrats!!

So I've got an interview at UM coming up. But I didn't get information on how to get there/where to park etc. For other interviewees: where am I supposed to park? I have to go to the Clinical Research Building for the interview day start.

I interviewed on November 1st. They told us that we would find out on the 23rd. So, if I did not get a call, email, or anything yesterday does that mean that I got waitlisted?

For anyone else who has been accepted- Do you know how important it is that you respond to the acceptance letter within the given two week period to reserve your spot?

Due to a post office mix up, I didn't even recieve the letter until yesterday. That's 16 days after the printed date on the letter and I'm paranoid they just rescinded my acceptance or something...

You're good. I called and they said that as long as they receive the email within the 2 week period, you'll have no problem. They just want to have a paper letter from you on file. I was accepted on the 11th and still haven't sent in the letter...probably will get on that tomorrow.

Has any one in the first wave of acceptances received their packets in the mail yet? I was in the second wave and got my acceptance letter in the mail last week. Just curious how long that should take.

what "packet"? I was in the first wave and only received a letter...

I haven't received a package either.

Its the package regarding all the admission procedures and related material. The first deadlines for forms, if I remember correctly, are at the end of March. I don't expect the package to come in until next year.

If you want to look at some of the stuff beforehand: http://www.mededu.miami.edu/MedEd/link_pages/importantStudentDocs/

I am withdrawing my application and freeing up an interview date for next week. Good luck guys! Miami is a great school!

Does anyone know if Miami has honored any "in the area" emails?

I'll be in Miami on January 14th so I figure I should send one out soon before those dates are filled.

Is there a Facebook group yet for those who have been accepted?

I'm curious about this, too. I'm going to be in FL on Dec 13th for an interview with another school, and my budget would kick me if I didn't try. I sent an e-mail, but I'm wondering if I should call given that it's such short notice and they must have to dig through hundred (if not hundreds!) of e-mails a day.

I don't have much to say other than I'm waiting on some alma mater love.

And wondering who's going to replace Coach Shannon as the perm coach after the possible bowl game...

Back to topic of the thread, did anyone ever get a response on email status checks? I got their vmail when I called so I don't know which route is better to go through.

I would definitely give them a call. I was considering calling for my January 14th date, lol. Let me know what they say 🙂
