Hi Everyone,

I interviewed in April and still have not received a decision from Miami. After not getting a call between 5-6pm last night I assumed I would be getting a waitlist or rejection email later in the night or today - but I haven't heard anything. Anyone in the same boat? Or have an idea why it is taking longer?

i don't know about your case specifically, but i know i didnt hear back for multiple weeks after i was supposed to, and i got accepted 🙂 so maybe don't worry yet. you could always call and ask.

I'm in the same boat! I sent an email asking about my status and they replied saying I would receive correspondence from them soon!! I don't even know what to think anymore. It seems everyone got waitlisted or accepted this past Wednesday.

I was looking at the Miami Miller SDN thread from last year. It seems some people received word they were on the alternate list or the temporary alternate list-- the later being of higher priority and had more movement.

Has anyone heard of this list system being used this year?

I called the office and asked about that. There is only an alternate list this year and it is ranked. (so no temp alternate list)

Can't imagine what the hold out emails could be for?!

Hey i just got my acceptance email last week and just wanted to let everyone know that there is still hope in getting accepted... yes, especially if you are on the waitlist. The admissions committee say themselves that they eventually (after waitlist) admit over 70% of those interviewed! Thats a huge percentage!!! And btw, they saved a portion of the seats for each adcom meeting; so again, your chances of getting in is high!

And to relieve some students from stress: I'm an oos student, submitted my supplemental application late december, interviewed march 21, and now got accepted... And NO, I dont have a 40Q or anything close to that... i have a 30M (yes 30M) and a 3.6 science gpa - still didnt graduate yet. So it is possible! Just stick in there and hopefully you'll get accepted. Just one advice and im sure you all heard this before: send admissions a letter of interest.

Good luck everyone!!!

Congrats on your acceptance!!! Were you originally on the waitlist? If so, did you send any letters or updates?

From her post, it would appear that she sent a letter of intent. However, I talked to admissions and they said the waitlist was ranked and that letters of intent are not needed because the committee isn't meeting anymore!

Does anyone know if UMMSM over accepts and anticipates a certain amount of people will withdraw before going to the alternate list or do they accept 150 applicants and then go to the alternate list?

This is just speculation, but I think it's the former of the two.. Our facebook page currently has 216 members, I know 150 are for the MD class.. I believe the MD/MPH class should have no more 50 students, which leaves a surplus.. I myself know of 2 accepted students who have chosen another school, so hopefully there is some movement on the list on or before May 15th.. Best of luck!

UMMSM Class of 2015!! 😀

Yea so from what I've heard... I think they only send out the 150 acceptances. They don't make more offers than that at a time.

And the fb group is probably at 216 because some of the students aren't all in our class. Some are from the student government that is already in place or are class of 2011, 2012, 2013, or 2014 students helping us out.

I agree with DMV, UMiami only accepts 150 and as people reject, they take from the waitlist. I specifically asked this question to Dr. Weissman on my interview day. However, I am pretty sure the class is 150 students total, including MD and MD/MPH. So 100 MD and 50 MD/MPH. Can anyone confirm this?

That stated, does that mean spring semester grades/EC updates will literally be off the table as well? If that 4/20 adcom meeting was the last supper, I'd assume going forward that the office will simply run down the ranked alt list as spots open up??

When I talked to UM, I was told that it goes really quickly down the list once May 15th rolls around. It sounded like the basically call you and ask you "yes" or "no" and if you say "no" they move right on to the next person on the list.

Hey no i was not on the waitlist... Got in on the first meeting (4/20). And i sent a "thank you letter"/"i really wana come to your schoo letter" which basically told them that I'm very interested and committed to come to this school if accepted.

And im 99% sure that there are 150 seats in regular MD and 48 in MD/MPH. That said, i think they must send over 300 acceptance in order that 200 actually choose to attend the school

speaking hypothetically, they initially accept 200 and then the other 100 off the alternate list right beause if they accepted 300 right away there wouldnt be enough seats if a majority of them wanted to go there.

Does anyone know if we have to accept the acceptance offer before getting the scholarship award letter? Or will it just come if I wait?

And is the scholarship automatically renewable for all 4 years?

I'm confused by your question. May 15th is approaching so if you haven't gotten a financial aid award but plan on Umiami over another current acceptance, you'd have to make your decision by then.

If there's some sort of time frame they say you have to put a deposit down for to hold a spot, you'd have to do that by that date regardless of financial aid award but if you choose to withdraw after fin. aid reward, you'll get that deposit back at most MD schools. I'd imagine Miami to be same.

GOOD LUCK!

Just to to the admissions office and they said that the award letter may or may not be sent by the 15th... Anyways, does anyone know the scholarships renew automatically every year or is it like law schoo that you need to be top 15% of the class or st to have it renewed?

Also, is there a website we can post or find roomates?

Just thought I would post the acceptances from last year's sdn Miami page. Maybe it will give us insight as to when to expect acceptances and when to give up!

5-12 acceptance
5-14 2 acceptances
5-17 2 acceptances
5-20 acceptance
5-24 2 acceptances
5-25 acceptance
5-27 acceptance

So, still haven't heard anything from Miami school since September. I have called over the past month and each time and they say that I should be receiving an e-mail soon. I even e-mailed them two days ago to express my disappointment at the lack of communication I have observed, yet still nothing. Additionally I have been checking my spam folder and my trash in case their e-mails have ended up in those locations. This is the second year applying to Miami and both times I have been very excited and hopeful about the school. Has everyone who hasn't interviewed received some type of response?

I have heard nothing as well and am debating askin for a refund of my $70 because this is ridiculous and i could definitely use my $70 now. Arent they required by aamc to have at least updated us by now?

I just withdrew my acceptance. It was really hard to press send on that email because I loved the school, but I want to be closer to family in the Northeast. Good luck to you all, and hopefully someone will hear good news soon 🙂

Haven't heard anything as well (no interview). I have called a few times during the cycle because this was the second app I completed and they were one of the only schools that gave no status updates. Last I called was a couple months ago. They said I was currently under review, and got an email not 15 minutes after calling with a link to apply to the MD/MPH program (which really rubbed me the wrong way). Luckily, I have other options that fit me better anyways (would have turned UM down with the acceptances I currently have).

to all of those that still haven't received a rejection letter - I e-mailed them last week to express my disappointment at the lack of communication I have experienced. They responded today to tell me that I should hear soon... which is the same thing they told me by phone 2 weeks ago. And the same thing that they told me at least once prior to two weeks ago.

I will now post my sentiments in smiley form:

:smack: 🤣 :wtf: 😆 :sendoff: :roflcopter: :eyebrow: +pissed+

While I understand your frustration the fact that you haven't interviewed is your answer! Why burn a bridge or jeopardize pissing off the wrong person? Do you have another acceptance? If not, you just eliminated a school from your Amcas next year!

Well, how else are they supposed to find out how they need to improve as an admissions office? 😛 Look, I've heard the same line for three months now: "You should hear something in a couple weeks." I knew I didn't have a chance when March rolled around, but I would still like to be told where my application stands (even if that is a rejection). Would have been better if they just said "You might not hear anything from us until May."

By golly, I paid $75 to get judged, and I WANT MY JUDGEMENT RENDERED!

While I agree with you, the fact is that they don't care what we think and rendering judgment or "helpful criticism" doesn't help anything and can only have the possible outcome of burning a bridge for you as a pre med. (pretty sure the above sentence is a run on lol)

Anyways, just saying you have to play the game and realize that they exert complete power over what you want most, an acceptance and maybe one day a residency spot!

They exert no power over Manbearpig cuz he's already accepted somewhere and done with the cycle. Just giving post application criticism to help future candidates. Constructive criticism post application process is always a good thing. But only if it is written well in a way that it is noted that it is constructive criticism.

Such constructive criticism sometimes brings vast changes. SUNY Upstate, for instance, brought changes to its admissions by bringing in email communication instead of snail mail paper communication after much constructive criticism by former applicants. The tricky part is writing it in a way that it is not construed as being rude and making sure it comes off as constructive criticism.

Good post! I just guess I'm not brave enough to send those type emails!

This is exactly what I was trying to accomplish. Originally, I wrote my latest email hoping for a personalized response, but unfortunately that never came. Ultimately, it's not about what a medical school CAN do or what they are REQUIRED to do, but rather what they Should do, and how they should treat their candidates. Part of the job of medical school administrations is customer service. Even if Miami does not want to accept me this application cycle, I would like to see that they care enough to send a personalized e-mail acknowledging and addressing my concerns. As stated by Manbearpig, I understand that I'm not being considered anymore... I even stated this in my email to admissions. I still spent time, energy, and money applying because I was genuinely interested in their school. When they communicate in the way that I have seen thus far, their message to me is that either they don't care about the candidates that don't make their cut, or there is some problem going on inside the admissions office that makes it too difficult to engage with their applicants.

After today I have giving up and will not be sending any additional e-mails

Completely true. Found nothing wrong with your original statement. Due care needs to be given to proper phrasing when trying to give feedback to an admissions office. They are definitely hard to please 😉

This makes me soooo happy 😎

Good on ya, mate. I completely agree. I actually put a lot of weight on my interactions with admissions offices when judging schools. Although you may not interact with those staff ever again, they are a part of the administrative world that you will be dealing with all the time as a student. The U is a fickle beast, and you have some cajones my friend

Cheers!

Does anyone know if any resources are given out for free for step 1 prep at this school? For example, some schools pay for Kaplan Centerprep.

On interview day students mentioned that they get enough time for review and the MS-IIIs help out by providing a sort of Step I bible, but no free Kaplan unfortunately 😳

hey guys, any news about movement on the alternate list? still patiently waiting

No movement here. I called about a week ago and the admissions office told me to not expect anything until after the 15th.

I also spoke to admissions recently and was told that there had not been an enough movement to justify calling individuals off the respective waitlists just yet. Apparently they honestly don't know what the situation will look like until after the 15th when they tally up the results.

The next seven or so days are going to be rough on the nerves...

Hopefully four years from now we will all be reminiscing about what a nightmare getting accepted to the class of 2015 was.

Best of luck to everyone!

Intel.... as of today, 05/17/2011, I have not received a pre-interview rejection e-mail.

Me neither.

Oddly enough I only got my Drexel pre-interview rejection letter as of yesterday even though they rejected me a while back when the interview season ended and put me on pre interview hold ages ago in spring some time.

I also got rejected from loyola in fall only to get the email officially in end of april. Go figure.

But Miami nor FSU have sent me anything though I know they are both rejections. Odd thing is with FSU people have gotten emails from them. i didn't get anything from them any more then I did from Miami.

Whatever I don't care anymore.

I'm more interested in knowing whether or not people are getting off the waitlist here.

Yeah i called admissions today said that there wasn't any movement yet. It could just be the fact that their tallying up people who accepted and people who passed up on the school so they can see how many spots the have to fill.

still hoping and praying i get off the list.

Hi all... today was a tough but exciting day for me. I decided to give up my MD/MPH spot at Miami for Mayo- a school I have dreamed about for a while now. It was just an opportunity I couldn't pass up! I loved Miami soooo much though and I hope whoever gets my spot makes the most out of a program and school I consider to be amazing. GOOD LUCK!

wow you got off the Mayo w/l! CONGRATS!!!! That's a huge deal. Wish you all the best.

I haven't interviewed yet. do you think i got rejected?

i have to get this off my chest.

as a miami grad there will always be a special place in my heart for the U, but right now i am really disappointed in them.

of the 18 schools i applied to across the country, they were the last to send me a rejection letter this morning via email, almost two months behind the next latest school. not having received even an interview invite, i do not think there was a need to withhold the decision letter for so long. it's not like anyone who hadn't been interviewed at this point even had a chance to be on the wait list. The email i did receive this morning was one of the most informal, discourteous rejections i've gotten (and in this season i have gathered many). they did not even have the courtesy to spend 44 cents on postage to mail me an addressed and signed rejection printed on nice paper with formal letterhead. no, they did not even have the courtesy or time to spend the 2 seconds required to begin the letter with "dear (my name here)" or even "dear applicant." there was no dear anything in this at all.

I will not say anything about my credentials. certainly there were many much better applicants than me and i won't spend this time disputing my scores or extracurriculars; that was their job. there's no sense crying over spilt milk, but i have to say that for the amount of time, effort and money spent on this application, the least we deserve is a timely, courteous response. it sucks to have cared so much and held in such high esteem a place that could not more obviously have given a rat's ass about you. of all the schools i applied to, i can't believe this would be the one i felt this way about.

miami, i am really disappointed in your treatment of your medical school applicants. we may not have deserved a spot in class, but everybody deserves some courtesy.
