Students I know say the school does have a slight research focus (they ARE a state public school that gets a LOT of research money), but their stated focus is primary care.

Dean white told me that they typically accept about 2 canadian students each year. They are considered OOS. In addition, the U tc does not have a commitment to rural medicine, as does duluth, but rather primary care. However there is a clinical rotation program offered at TC for rural medicine. As for secondary application fees, you will need to pay for both duluth and Tc independently.

Have you heard back from them yet? I'm waiting for a secondary, too, and thinking about calling.
 
Has anyone in the regular pool been offered an interview yet? If so, what are your stats?

Non-trad here and I am nervous that they will only look at my AMCAS GPA (cGPA 3.6, sGPA 3.3), and not my GPA after returning to school (cGPA 3.87, sGPA 3.7). My science and cGPA were both 4.0 until my daughter was born. I then had a semester where it dipped. The next semester back to 4.0.
 
I have not checked for forum for a couple weeks. Well I guess I'm not one of the 10 EDP interviews that Deems spoke of on 8-31. Shucks - perhaps they will consider me in the regular decision group. I haven't heard anything from them since late July when I finished and submitted my supp.

Joe,
I just want to clarify something. I was told that 10 EDP students received interview invitations this year, However, it was not specified whether more would receive interviews or not! I would not get discouraged yet. I did not mean to provide acceptance/declined infromation by any means. I wish you the best of luck with your application process! :xf:

I got an invite this morning. OOS (sorta). I was a MN resident for all of my life except for the last year. Non-EDP. There are several options for interviewing in late September and early October

August 4, I think. Or at least that's when I paid the fee. I don't remember if I paid before submitting the secondary (or if that was even possible with MN)?
 
i'm kind of on the fence for submitting the secondary myself. got it a little over a week ago but, with no ties whatsoever to minnesota, it's beginning to feel like throwing away time and money. the twin cities seem amazing for the wife and i, but a non-trad OOS with a few ancient red flags seems like an easy target for rejection. too bad, it seems like a wonderful place.
 
I got an invite for interview yesterday! In-state, non-EDP, completed in June-early July. Interview is next week! :soexcited:

I have heard nothing unfortunately. I'd love to come back to MN for medical school as I've been away for my undergraduate :xf: Hopefully soon!

Hey, you sound like you are in a very similar boat as me. I have some black marks in my academic past as well plus I actually attended a tech school to get an associate's before transferring to a university to finish my bachelo's degree. I felt like U of M was a little bit of a long shot until I woke up this morning and saw I was invited to interview next Friday. I'm a non-traditional student and out of state to boot. Since people often seem to ask about stats, I'll throw them out for who's interested.

Completed at the very end of August. cGPA 3.8, sGPA 4.0, MCAT 37R

This is by far my top school. I would adore to come back to MN as I have been away for undergrad as well. If you haven't heard yet either I am assuming it is too early to be too worried. Good luck to you as well :luck:

When I called on 9/6, the person on the phone had said that UMN was getting to people who had submitted in early/middle August. Maybe try calling to check on your application?

Same here. It's not really a lot of time or money to complete, but I don't like getting rejected.
 
I just found out I did not get into the U of M Duluth. I am really bummed, and actually quite surprised. It was definately my first choice school.

Based on their rejection letter I have to assume that they were not confident that I would like to practice rural family medicine in Minnesota. Which, does, make me a little upset. I wrote 14 essays (800 words) explaining who I was and why I want to do this.

My goal is absolutely to become a rural physician in Minneosta, so I guess it is both my loss, as well as the school's.

Based on your poor attitude I don't think it was much of a loss for the school.

When you say "getting to people" do you mean interviews/rejections? Because they received my application early July and I got my secondary early August, which I submitted the next day (on 8/10 I believe), so it would make sense that they would be sending out interviews for that time period very soon...

If last year's cycle is indicative of this year's, it would make sense, because I submitted my secondary 9/1, received an interview invite in mid- to late October, and had the interview 12/10...

Hopefully we'll hear back on interviews soon!

Maybe it's just me, but I would be surprised if I GOT into any school... There are so many qualified applicants, it's amazing how many of them don't get in any given year. I will be very grateful if I am accepted this year.

Haha, you're way ahead of me. I called, asking about secondaries only but it could be possible that they were referring to all statuses. +1 for hearing back on interviews soon, hopefully!
 
Has any EDP applicant heard anything recently? I interviewed 3 weeks ago and have not heard anything yet and I am now starting to worry.

I have a question for the board about OOS tuition and scholarships. I'm a California resident (grad school), but I went to a private school in MN for my undergrad. My spouse is also a U of M grad. Does MN grant in-state tuition to OOS acceptances? I saw a thread from about 5 years ago that said they did, and I was wondering if anyone knew this was still the case.

Also, do they give out much money by the way of merit scholarships? I have very strong stats (4.0/40, masters degree) and I was curious if anyone knew their history of giving merit scholarships, especially to OOS's.

I'm just trying to gauge whether it is worth the money to do a secondary/interview here, versus a location I would like less that could potentially be cheaper (like U Michigan). Thanks for your insight!

I am EDP as well and had my interview on Aug 30. I would not worry. The U said that they consider all EDP applicants at once in a full committee meeting at the end of SEPT. That said, I believe we all find out at once. I too am very anxious! :0

As there are only approx. 28 OOS matriculants I would guess your odds are pretty good. Based on your scores if you know how to tie your shoes and hold a conversation your probably fine 🙂

Really? That seems crazy! I didn't see anybody talking about those scholarships in past years...that would be fantastic, though.

Or, were you talking about Michigan? This U of M stuff gets confusing.

So if I wear flats, that is a bad sign?

I lied. The OOS scholarships only cover the difference between instate and OOS tuition. I stand corrected. Thank you all 🙂

I don't know if that is true. The scholarship you are referring to must be the difference between IS and OOS tuition, which is a few thousands $$s. That would be incredibly unfair for a state school to offer full ride scholarships to only OOS students.

I just looked this up -- you are correct, neutropos.

The University of Minnesota Medical School is committed to attracting a diverse student body. In order to attract diverse students from a variety of geographic, social, economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, it is necessary to recruit students from beyond the borders of Minnesota. Therefore, the Medical School Admissions Committee may award twenty-five (25) scholarships, equivalent in amount to the non-resident portion of medical school tuition, to high ability non-resident, non-reciprocity students to achieve this goal.

I wonder if they would give additional aid on top of that? Either way, that makes it much more palatable. I'm scared the UC system will jack up tuition here, with the deplorable condition of our state.
 
Just interviewed last Friday and thought I would share a few things with anyone that will interview soon (or will receive invites soon) and was curious: The style is incredibly chill and the format consists of 2 one-on-one interviews. A faculty in the a.m. (right after orientation) and an MS4 at the end of the day (who, btw, has no prior info on you- so very laid back). The applicant group was only 5 people too, a nice bonus. Hear back time is 6-8 weeks. Essentially, no one is rejected until late spring (per Dean White) so everyone is either accepted or wait-listed initally. Also, the school overextends itself a bit, offering acceptances to approx. 50% of those interviewed (~245) though only ~170 will matriculate.

I see a lot of talk about tuition and scholarships. Thought I would bring up that there are research assistantships also where you get paid research experience in an area of your choice ($17/hour at 10 hours/week). An excellent way to lower tuition and get some very beneficial research time.

Really pulling for this school. p.s. You also get to sit in on a year-two lecture. After that experience I was sold sold sold. Good luck everyone!

I would be careful about the official word on deadlines from the U. That is not to say anything negative about the school, but although the official deadline to hear back is 6-8 weeks, at least the last two years it has been anywhere from 6-13 weeks after the interview... Last year they told us 4-6 officially, more likely 5-7, and no later than 8... Well, I ended up waiting into the double digits.

Again, that doesn't necessarily reflect poorly on the school. On the contrary, it would suggest they very carefully look at all applicants. However, it also means not to take the deadlines as set in stone.
 
Ok EDP Applicants, I say one of us calls in and asks when Dean White's going to make the acceptance call... I called last week so I call not it for this one.... Any takers?

Calling the School for the EDP decision. Not it!! I am starting to get very anxious though. Last EDP to respond "not it" has to call the school.

Ahh, okay...thanks for the heads up. I'll try to not to crawl too far up the Dean's ass if I don't hear back by 8 weeks :laugh:

I am EDP too. I called in last week to ask if they had made decisions and they said they are not going to notify anyone until the deadline, which they clarified that they would likely make the calls on Sept 30th or on Oct 1. So don't get too worried quite yet...
