:soexcited: interview invite today for the regular MD program!! Hoping I'll get the October 4th interview! :xf: The U of M is definitely one of my top choices! I go there for undergrad so if I stick around I won't even have to move out of my apartment!

So excited, and many congrats to those who also got interviews!

Congrats!!

On a separate note, have any IS applicants gotten an interview invitation?

I just got a call from the Dean, and I'm officially accepted to the U of Minnesota Medical School! 🙂👍👍👍

Congrats! I got the same phone call except Dean White left me a message saying I was accepted. See you next summer! Good Luck everyone.

Congrats! I will see you then!
For everyone else, goodluck! All your patients and work will pull off soon. :luck:

I am also (proudly) in-state, and have received no interview invite yet... 🙁

Congrats, acceptees! That's awesome ^_^ Hope to see you all next fall

Tim, I'm pulling for ya!

We are coming up on midterms, so I won't be on here much/at all but I am still available if people have questions for me

Has anyone received a rejection letter from UMN Twin Cities? I've been complete since mid-Aug and have not yet heard back. Not sure if they sort by stats or review based solely on completion date.

CONGRATULATIONS! 👍 That's awesome to hear you two!

DocBell is correct, I am indeed a proud Minnesotan 😀

Sweet, good to know. Thanks! :xf: to hearing soon.

I'm sure you'll all get interviews pretty soon! Plus the dates I was offered were all in October, starting on the 4th, so it seems like there's plenty of interviews left.

Let's hope so! Congratulations on the interview invite, by the way!

Got the call tonight too. Congrats to everyone who ends up getting in. Does anyone know when we get an email account so that we can log into the website?

Congrats JRNLSN. I think we interviewed on the same day.

Okay. I'm asking for some advice. I'm 27O MCAT 3.66 gpa, good extracurriculars. Would I be wasting my time and energy if I applied? I mean, should I put in the time and effort (motivation is running low at this point) to submit a secondary? For someone like me with not so great numbers I should've submit it earlier, but I didn't receive the secondary until first week September and I've spent the month filling out osteopathic essays. According to MSAR, U of M did not accept anyone with 27.

Thoughts?

Actually the MSAR shows the 10th to 90th percentile. So there were still people they accepted with MCATs below the shaded region in the MSAR book. So I would say go ahead and apply, it couldn't hurt to try.

If you're a MN resident, definitely give it a shot. If you're OOS, don't.

To all who applied EDP,

Are you willing to share any advice or stats info? I am teetering on the decision to apply EDP next cycle with my 3.73 cGPA and 3.58 sGPA. I have hit all the different EC areas: leadership (Resident Advisor), research(clinical-140 hours), clinical volunteering(100hrs), service volunteering(100 hrs), teaching(100hrs). Shadowing is planned. I have really strong ties to the school and state. Both parents graduated from the med school and practiced in-state. My dream is to go there! So any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

It sounds like you have a nice well rounded application. I also had a lot of good Extracurriculars/ties, so I will give you the advice I received from one of my advisors. If you do "extremely well" on your MCAT, apply EDP, if not, apply regular decision. Now I do not know where this magic number lies (prob. Somewhere between 32 and 37), but this is what I used to decide whether or not to do EDP. Once I got a score I felt comfortable with, I applied EDP. I actually set a goal score ahead of time for edp. I am interested in seeing other's thoughts on this.

I am a nontrad. I was accepted EDP this year . My stats are 31 MCAT, approx GPA 3.8, SGPA 3.8, Captain US Army, Combat Veteran to Iraq, 6 years of experience as a PA-C, ran Battalion Aid Station in Iraq, ACLS, BLS, PALS, ATLS certified in trauma. I have no research experience except for one published paper with partial authorship from 7 years ago. No shadowing but in physician assistant school, after you complete your didatic year, you have one full year of clinical training with rotations in multiple specialities. Strong EC in colleges (10 years ago) I hope this helps. I only planned on applying to one school as a local homeowner and soon to be parent. The U of M is a great medical school. It trains great physicians.

Any interview invites go out lately? I submitted my secondary September 4th and heard it generally takes about a month to hear back. Anyone else submit around the same time and get an invite yet?

I've been complete since July-ish and I haven't heard a thing. Patience is a virtue that comes in handy during this time of year. No news is good news!
:xf:

I received an interview invitation last Wednesday and I replied to the email (with my interview day request), but they have yet to email me back. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I call and ask about it?

Thank you 🙂

Last year I received an interview invite almost two months after submission of my secondary.

I'm still getting worried. Its been over that for me.

Yeah, but remember, last year I heard back about 10 weeks after my interview and was wait listed, and someone else heard back about 13+ weeks after their interview, and was accepted. Depending on your circumstances, them taking longer could mean you are on the fence, whereas hearing back sooner may mean certain rejection. Of course, who knows but the admissions committee haha... It'll be soon though!

Just so you guys know, the admissions office at the U is notoriously unreliable. I had a friend who had given up on any hope of acceptance, then called the office and realized that they had indeed admitted her but somehow failed to give her a call.

I had my own issues with interview scheduling. I had replied to the invite with my selected dates, and didn't hear anything back. I called, and the receptionist let me know that I was all set to interview on the 11th.....not one of the dates I chose and not even one that I had been offered! Fixed it, thankfully.

Moral of the story: If you feel like something isn't quite right, CALL THE ADMISSIONS OFFICE! Their friendliness makes up for their lack of organization.

Hey everyone,

I just received an invitation to the secondary.

How competitive do you have to be to receive the secondary? Does anyone have any statistics on this?

What are my odds of getting an interview if you receive a secondary? Thanks

hey you got your secondary invite today....when did you submit your primary app...I'm still waiting

I just received my secondary yesterday as well. I submitted my primary to them at the end of August/early September after speaking with a physician who went there. I'm also really interested to know what percentage of students receive a secondary. I feel the need to have this secondary submitted by this weekend otherwise they won't even consider me :scared:

I received an interview invite last week and am extremely excited! I really wasn't expecting to hear back from them as I'm OOS.

This school seems awesome and I hear the interviews are pretty chill (??).

I just recieved my interview invite today!! Secondary complete on September 2nd, in-state. Good luck everybody!

I am an OOS applicant (I'm from about 10 mins from the MN/IA border) with decent stats: cGPA 3.7, sGPA 3.95, 33Q MCAT and good extracurriculars. My MCAT score came out on Sept. 24th making my primary app complete and I have yet to receive a secondary application invite. I'm thinking that I should meet their preliminary screening requirements, but I'm concerned that any further delay will ruin my chances of being accepted. Any suggestions???

Congrats on all the interviews, guys 🙂

On a different note, I have kind of a strange question. I am super familiar with the U of M medical school to the point that I could probably give the tour. I've been in the hospitals, anatomy labs, lecture halls, library, everything. As much as I love teetering around huge medical schools in a suit and heels, the tour just feels like a colossal waste of time to me. Right now my feeling is that I should just suck it up so I don't look apathetic about the school...but does anyone think it would be OK to skip it?

Thanks for the input

It might be a good opportunity to get to know potential classmates! I remember the tour last year was a good chance to talk to the other students...

Good luck!

Got my secondary invite today!! I feel like I should get this done by tomorrow since it is already middle of october

Thank you both for your insight!

I saw a group of med school interviewees getting a tour the other day. Made me curious if it was any of you. In any case, good luck. :luck: Maybe I'll be in your shoes in the not too distant future. :xf:

that very well may have been me...

I just recently interviewed and was extremely impressed. The new curriculum seems awesome and a great balance of teaching styles to serve any type of student. The faculty were outgoing and the students equally so. I really like the city(ies) and the fact that it's part of a large undergraduate campus. Basically, I'm sold. 😍

Now for 6-8+ weeks of waiting... 🙁

I was there this past Thursday...everyone seemed nice but not super enthusiastic about the curriculum. According to a good friend who is a second year, the transition to the new curriculum has been pretty disastrous (for the MS-2's, that is....idk about MS-1's) and the administration has been extremely defensive about their decisions and not very receptive to student input.

There's still a pretty high chance that I'll matriculate at the U of M if accepted...but I really hope they get things smoothed out by next fall.

Hey all!! Glad to say I survived midterms and can hopefully come back and check these boards once in awhile ^_^

MS-1s are dealing with the new curriculum. So far it has been pretty great, but there are definitely some shaky spots (particularly with certain lecturers and online material). These are being worked on continuously and the administration has been very receptive to most of the feedback. I am on the student council and we are most definitely working to improve things.

MS2s are having a much harder time. They had a cardio test the other week and something like over 60% of the class failed, due to logistics of the test (not necessarily lack of knowledge/understanding). A retest and refinaggling is being worked out but I know their class was extremely frustrated and vocal about the whole thing. From other things I have heard about this incident, though, was that the students were very disrespectful and hostile afterwards when dealing with administration, thereby putting them on the defensive. Our class hasn't had a major blow-up issue yet, and while some things are being addressed, others are left in the hands of the instructors and sometimes they just won;t follow-through (example: embryo lecture objectives).

Our midterms seemed to go well for the most part, for example the class average on the anat practical was just about 90% (5% higher than last year's class!). I only know of one person who failed one test (he apparently freaked out during the practical), but have not heard anything else in those regards.

If anyone has specific questions, let me know.

Oh, and Tim is correct, some people did not hear back for 12+ to 16+ weeks post-interview and were still accepted. Part of that is due to the interviewers not filling out their forms in a timely manner, and the rest has to do with the committee review that follows if a person does not get the immediate 2 (3?) thumbs up. If the process is the same as last year, the committee meets biweekly and gets through as many applications at a time as they deem fit/necessary/whatever. So you may be "scheduled for review" for three sessions in a row and not actually get reviewed because they spend (too much) time talking about the files ahead of yours.

It's so great to get some honest inside information from a current student. Thanks for all the time you've given us!

Well clearly the whole thing was a clusterf*** both because of the students (who were apparently threatening to hire lawyers) and the admin. Ultimately they worked out that instead of having to get a 70% on each section of the test, a 70% overall was considered good enough for a pass. But if the administration had listened to the opinions of the students in the first place (i.e. put up practice questions online), the issue probably wouldn't have occurred at all.

This is what I've gathered from talking to ~5 different MS-2's. I'm just bringing this up because I'm nervous about what next fall will have in store for future MS-1's. It's good to hear that current MS1's are having a better year so far.

It's unfortunate that there's so much to be smoothed out with the MS1/2 curriculum because UMN is clearly an amazing choice of school when it comes to MS3/4.

I understand your concerns. I really don't think anyone after our class will have to worry about these types of issues. The U is up for Lcme reaccred and it
Is very important that the students are happy and having their needs met food the whole process.
Sadly yes the whole 2nd year debacle might have been avoided, and it has been handled in a very reactive manner. I think the bottom-line however is that the admin was not going to let the class fail and this situation was not going to have any impact on their transcripts, letters, etc. people need to tAke the Longview on this

Thanks for the input. It's really good to hear from a first year because obviously your experience is much closer to what ours is going to be like. 👍
