To those who got in: does anybody know what the medical facilities are like? Unfortunately during my interview I never had a chance to tour the anatomy lab or anything really. I got to see the robot room (and killed a robot in the process), but that's really it. How are the lecture halls, anatomy labs, and computer lab?
Also, I realize that the whole university is in a process of renovation and building, and that there's a new medical building going up with mad labs and such. I have no idea what it's called, but has that new building gone up yet?
Hopefully some of you existing UNC MS students might respond, or give me a chance to PM you with questions! Thanks a lot!
Hi, I'm a current MS1 at UNC and thought I could help you out a little in terms of your questions about the facilities. First, our lecture halls are really fancy. There are two (one for MS1 and one for MS2). They are in a (relatively) new building and are really nice. They have stadium-style seating and each desk has a 1GB/sec ethernet connection and a power outlet. These are essential as most students (a) take notes on the computer and (b) we all take exams on the computer. Also, the lectures are recorded and put online (you see the slides and have audio from the professor). They have smartboards and are pretty state-of-the-art.
We have small groups in several classroom around the med school. They are pretty typical classrooms that can hold up to around 40 ppl. Our clinical skills class uses real exam rooms to practice. These are in the same building which houses the sim lab.
The anatomy lab is fine. In truth, med school applicants really seem to put a lot of weight into the anatomy lab. Remind yourself that this is a room in which you will only spend about 10 weeks of medical school during your first year. I wouldn't advice choosing school A over school B simply b/c they have a nicer anatomy lab. That said, I thought ours was nice. Good ventilation, etc...
In terms of a "computer lab", there isn't one to speak of just in the med school. There are several computers in the health science library, and many labs around campus including one in the school of public health which is across the street from the med school. But honestly, I don't know why we need a dedicated lab.
Also, the building you mentioned that is in process is the new dental research building.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. Or, if you're back in Chapel Hill, let me know and I'll be happy to take you on a more extensive tour.
I would say that a few of the most important factors in choosing a med school should include the friendliness, quality, and availability of the faculty and the character of your classmates. I'm proud to say that at UNC, we have the best of both. Our faculty are nice, happy, top-notch physicians and researchers, and my classmates are intellectually curious, honest, and interesting people. I urge you to consider these aspects of a school in addition to how nice the classrooms are. You're only in a classroom for a little while, but you're stuck with the people in them for a long time.
I hope this is helpful.
Best,
Gator
