Same. Its unfortunate since one interviewer said he thought I would get in. Too bad my committee interviewer also did my exit interview last year. She was an awful woman who took month to return my call, and then told me not to bother even applying this year. Anyway, good luck to everyone still waiting, UNC is a great school!

Girl, does this mean you will be headed to Omaha or are you still waiting to hear from any other school? (I am in the same boat and saw your post in the other thread)

Did you interview with Dr. Reisner?

Rejection just came. Didn't really expect it. Sad ... loved UNC.

Dang, I'm sorry to hear that. At least you have other options.

Should I receive the same decision, it looks like I'll be applying next year....

Best of luck through the rest of the cycle!

Did you interview with Dr. Reisner?

No, I had Dr. Cannon. Did I mention she was also an hour late to my interview? She was pretty terrible, but the other interviewer was great! I thought it was the good cop, bad cop thing but I guess it was just that she did not like me.

Her behavior is decidedly un-UNC. My impression was North Carolina prides itself on a relatively relaxed interview environment. It's too bad that was your experience.

Did you (or could you still) think about appealing the interview/requesting another? I know of people for whom they've done that in the past when something was particularly 'off' with the interview day.

I have yet to hear from ECU ... but I'm not sure I would choose ECU over Creighton. It seems like Omaha it is!

Are you waiting to hear from other schools? It would be awesome to have somebody else from NC at CU! When I interviewed, it was mostly California people. I was the only one from the south ... or, semi-south.

Do y'all think there will be a meeting today with the weather the way it is all over NC? I'm hoping they meet and some of us get calls tonight!

Just FYI, the committee did a double-long meeting at their next scheduled date to make up for missing this one.

To anyone who got rejected this round from UNC -- please keep your chin up! There's better things on the horizon no matter what.

To those who got in: does anybody know what the medical facilities are like? Unfortunately during my interview I never had a chance to tour the anatomy lab or anything really. I got to see the robot room (and killed a robot in the process), but that's really it. How are the lecture halls, anatomy labs, and computer lab?

Also, I realize that the whole university is in a process of renovation and building, and that there's a new medical building going up with mad labs and such. I have no idea what it's called, but has that new building gone up yet?

Hopefully some of you existing UNC MS students might respond, or give me a chance to PM you with questions! Thanks a lot!

rejection email today as well. at least the waiting game is over. 👎

Rejection in my inbox today as well...

Interviewed October 5.

To all who received bad news: that blows! I was really hoping by some miracle that everyone on here would get in, since it seems to be a really nice group of people. 🙁

Girl000: I just did the opposite thing (moved out to NC from Omaha, did undergrad at UNO). Omaha is actually a decent place, and Creighton is a solid school with a good rep. From what I've heard, they do a lot in conjunction with UNMC (the state school) as well, so it is somewhat collaborative. If you end up going there and need any tips about Omaha (i.e. where is the good sushi? etc), PM me if you want.

Good luck to anyone still waiting and sorry again to anyone who got bad news.

I want to apply to UNC-CH for next application cycle; did many of you submit your AMCAS in June? Because I want to retake my MCAT to get a higher score and I cannot seem to do that until July/August...Would submitting application by September put me in disadvantage?

The earlier the better, but I didn't submit mine until September because I wanted to get as many new clinical hours as I could before I re-applied. Worked out for me! Best of luck!

Hi, I'm a current MS1 at UNC and thought I could help you out a little in terms of your questions about the facilities. First, our lecture halls are really fancy. There are two (one for MS1 and one for MS2). They are in a (relatively) new building and are really nice. They have stadium-style seating and each desk has a 1GB/sec ethernet connection and a power outlet. These are essential as most students (a) take notes on the computer and (b) we all take exams on the computer. Also, the lectures are recorded and put online (you see the slides and have audio from the professor). They have smartboards and are pretty state-of-the-art.

We have small groups in several classroom around the med school. They are pretty typical classrooms that can hold up to around 40 ppl. Our clinical skills class uses real exam rooms to practice. These are in the same building which houses the sim lab.

The anatomy lab is fine. In truth, med school applicants really seem to put a lot of weight into the anatomy lab. Remind yourself that this is a room in which you will only spend about 10 weeks of medical school during your first year. I wouldn't advice choosing school A over school B simply b/c they have a nicer anatomy lab. That said, I thought ours was nice. Good ventilation, etc...

In terms of a "computer lab", there isn't one to speak of just in the med school. There are several computers in the health science library, and many labs around campus including one in the school of public health which is across the street from the med school. But honestly, I don't know why we need a dedicated lab.

Also, the building you mentioned that is in process is the new dental research building.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me. Or, if you're back in Chapel Hill, let me know and I'll be happy to take you on a more extensive tour.

I would say that a few of the most important factors in choosing a med school should include the friendliness, quality, and availability of the faculty and the character of your classmates. I'm proud to say that at UNC, we have the best of both. Our faculty are nice, happy, top-notch physicians and researchers, and my classmates are intellectually curious, honest, and interesting people. I urge you to consider these aspects of a school in addition to how nice the classrooms are. You're only in a classroom for a little while, but you're stuck with the people in them for a long time.

I hope this is helpful.

Best,
Gator

uh oh, yet another (potentially) magic monday!

Here is the link again from Facebook in case it changed. Just search Facebook for UNC School of Medicine Class of 2015 if the link below doesn't work. Best of luck to those still waiting to hear and I look forward to meeting everyone who has been accepted at Second Look!

Weird, that link doesn't work for my friend and I and we can't find it on search either. Maybe the group is private.

I'll add my name to the growing pile of rejection letters sent out recently. Very sad as I thought I interviewed very well. I love UNC and will definitely be applying next year.

Good luck to those who are still in the running!

Anyone know what the process is for requesting an exit interview?

Does anyone know if the merit scholarships listed on the UNC SOM website are for OOS students as well as those from North Carolina? Also- any idea when admitted students are notified?

Sorry to re-quote my own post, but are there any current students or applicants out there who know the answer to this question?

From what I remember about it after getting rejected on my last app there, I just called the admissions office and asked to schedule one, and I'm pretty sure the interview itself was sometime in mid-May. I had the same experience last time--great interviews, had a pretty good feeling about acceptance, and then wasn't even waitlisted. Don't give up though! Doing the exit interview is a good place to start, obviously for the advice they can offer, but also the adcom member you interview with writes up a brief summary of the exit interview to go in your file, so it's just one more thing for the adcom to see on your next application that shows them your dedication (and another voice to advocate for you in committee meetings). Have a few things in mind about your application that you think could use improvement, and what you're planning to do to bring about those improvements. I hated not getting in last time, but the exit interview really crystallized for me what I needed to do to be more competitive, and it finally worked out this cycle (my third). If you rise to that challenge of knocking out of the park what they think could use work, you'll be in awesome shape for next time. Best of luck!

I had the same experience. I called the first day I could after my rejection last year and scheduled my exit interview for the earliest time I could, which I think was mid to late April (not totally sure on this). I worked on what they suggested, rewrote my PS and all my essays for the secondaries (IMO, it would be a huge mistake to reuse these, even if you felt you did well on them this year), and was much more confident in the interview this year. Last year, I thought it was pretty good, but in retrospect I probably came off as really timid and unsure of myself. It seems that they really look favorably on people who take to heart their advice in improving their application. Good luck! :luck:

I just got my acceptance call around 6 PM today. I am so excited, waited a very long time for this. 😀

I'll third this experience. I had my exit interview around April. My adcom representative was a harsh critic, but he gave me pretty clear directions on what to do next. My interviewers this year directly commented that they were pleased that I took their notes so seriously. I believe my exit interview last year was key to my successful application this year.

I'll 4th all this. Basically the same story for me.

Finally got the call at 6:15pm.

Interviewed early October. And I also received the post interview email update sometime in November about my application being under review but no decision yet. SO, don't give up if you haven't heard. I waited for 18 weeks (4 months).

Good luck to you all.

Congrats and I almost drove myself crazy with my month of waiting, I can't imagine 18 weeks which is pretty amazing to have still kept your sanity. Good Luck to everyone else. If you have questions or if I can help let me know.

Ok, this gives me hope. I interviewed late Nov and I'm starting to get anxious.

I wonder why they make some people wait so long? Was last week the first time they sent out rejections for this cycle? I saw someone got rejected after interviewing Oct 5th, so maybe they are just now starting to reject the ones who interviewed early and are working their way down... can anyone confirm this? I interviewed in October as well and didn't get a call yesterday, so I'm getting pretty anxious.

From my understanding of the process, I think it just depends on luck and who you go up against that day. If they like you and you're meant to get in then you will get in eventually it just depends on who comes up that day because if someone goes up against a 4.0/40 IS then they obviously might get passed up that week because your committee member probably doesn't want to put you in against someone like that. From previous years' threads it seems like a big chunk of the class gets accepted in late Feb and early Mar. so there might be an avalanche of acceptances in the coming month if the trend holds.

This year seems weird with the rejections though because last year they rejected a bunch in the beginning of January and then again in April but this year it seems like they've been rejecting throughout January and at the Beginning of this month too.

I know it's hard not to worry but I think no news is good news applies here because with all the rejections they sent out recently that means the people they are keeping they are serious about.

Good Luck to all those waiting and I'm surprised they didn't give out more today or at least no one on SDN got more.

EDIT: Also if you look at their interview schedule it looks like they're winding down with interviews in the next week or two and will buckle up to make final decisions. I know usually a lot of acceptances come when they have that final meeting and get everyone they like on board.

From what I have heard the admissions committee looks at applicants once, and a select few get in on that first look. The rest get reviewed periodically and acceptances come as you make the cut. Put another way, if after interviewing you they just MUST have you, a quick call comes (first or second adcom meeting). If you are a maybe, you are put in a stack to wait and see how the other candidates stack up, and depending on how you rank, you can hear something up until the end of march. At that time each school must have all of it's seats filled. Therefore, based on the number of students that normally accept at the end of march they create a waitlist and rejection list, and many of you (and me) will hear something then.

Hope this helps, good luck to all.

The above is from a previous post I made. Basically, you being put in a pile to be reviewed again. Such is rolling admissions. Basically the fact that you haven't been rejected means so far you are too good to reject, but not compelling enough to the admissions committee. (in the adcom's opinion not mine!) best of luck and don't give up.

Yea, it looks like after this week they only have 3 people to interview and they're done so I'm guessing the big long meeting they have at the end of the cycle where the avalanche of acceptances come in is probably at the 21st of February or March 7th. So hopefully you guys left waiting don't have to wait as long. Good luck to all.

I compare the acceptance process a lot to the draft process in football and basketball. The teams try to gauge your talent compared to other players and they want to wait as long as they can to draft you. Some players that fit the system well or they think will go high to other teams they take with the high pick but if they can wait and see how everyone else drafts and how it all plays out to get the best deal then they do. Honestly I don't think the length of the wait determines how much they like or your chances. It might just be that they think most IS would want to go to UNC if given the chance and try to snatch up only those who they might think would leave. That's just my opinion from reading the past two years' thread while I was waiting so I'm not an expert or anything on it.

Just wanted to also chime in and say I was accepted by phone call on Monday by Dr. Brice. I interviewed on January 24th and am SO EXCITED! UNC was my top choice after my interview for a variety of reasons and I'm 90% sure I'll be going there in the Fall. BEST PHONE CALL EVER! 😍

Congrats on the recent acceptances.

GO TO HELL, DUKE! GO HEELS!

Hey all, I'm planning on applying to UNC this summer and was wondering if you experienced folks could offer any advice on applying to UNC. Does UNC emphasize any particular areas? Which admissions person would be best to talk to? Any logistical trouble that you all experienced? Other than applying early, any other tips on improving the chances of getting accepted?

And what are interviews like? Faculty or student interviewers? Individual or group?

Thanks!
