Since when is Dr. Kellaway not part of Admissions?? I called this am to speak with her and they told me she doesn't do admissions anymore. I was heartbroken to find this out!!! I feel like she knows me and my application/stregnths so well, I've been speaking with her for 4 years now about admission to UT-H. The school wont be the same without her :-(

I'm really interested in knowing whether the "hell week" schedule is as big a con as I hear. Someone told me everyone hates it.

Here's some opinions from UTH students that I gleaned from past year threads about the testing schedule:

1) Q. The traditional UTH curriculum is still the traditional system where you take separate anatomy, biochemistry, microbio, physio, etc... courses right? I heard that there are weeks in which you have like 4-5 tests in a row. How are you guys able to cope with that?
A. For block tests, we typically (first semester, at least) have a single test each on Monday and Tuesday, then Wednesday off and another test each on Thursday and Friday. I'm pretty stressed the weekend before and on Monday and Thursday nights, but it really isn't all that bad. It isn't as bad as I was expecting when I first saw the syllabi. It's nice to be able to take a little time off after exams, too.
Some portions of the courses are organized so we're studying the same systems from different approaches in each of the classes (ex: development of the kidneys, while dissecting them and looking at slides of them in Histo).

2) block exams aren't bad, but it demonstrates why you can't cram in med school.

3) Since there is only one exam each day it's pretty legit. It's nice that there is no class during exam week. So you get to concentrate solely on exams, rather than having to balance your lectures an take and exam the same day. As said in my previous post, our class did exceptionally well on the NBME Subject Exams (averages ~80th percentile nationally), so the curriculum definitely works well. It also leaves a weekend after exams that nothing is going on. So you can take a 3 day breather.

Unfortunately that happened right around the beginning of the interview season.

Just thought I'd give you my opinion about block week, since I just finished the first one. I thought I would hate block style exams and ultimately chose this school despite them. I was pleasantly surprised- it really wasn't that bad. Stress was definitely highest the weekend before block and on Thursday night- Thursday was my fault as I put off hard-core studying for our Friday exam until then.

However, all I had to do all day was study- no going to class or meetings or any other obligations. I spent most of the day at my apartment, Starbucks, and la Madeline. I was even able to go grocery shopping on Monday night, do laundry, and have dinner with a friend on Wednesday. All in all it was a decent week. Over the weekend I didn't open a single book and it was amazing. Don't let block exams deter you, they really aren't that bad!

More info from a past thread on the testing schedule:

Q. How many weeks of block testing do you have?

A. It depends. During 1st semester of 1st year, you'll have a week of tests 3x during the semester plus final exams. During 2nd semester, you will have a week of tests 4x during the semester plus finals. In second year, you only have a week of tests 2x a semester and then the final exams are at the end of the 2nd semester. During 3rd year, you have an exam at the end of each rotation.

Interviewed today! It was a lot of fun. My favorite parts were going on the roof to see the Life Flight copters and the observatory dome! so cool!!

The tour at this school was an absolute win! Where else are you going to see someone get prepped for heart surgery and see Life Flight Copters ride off into the sunset to save someone's life? 😎

UTH = crazy awesome in so many ways and way underrated

Glad you guys are enjoying the tours. We enjoy putting them on for you.

disarticulate is actually one of the guys who runs that whole thing.

Still waiting to here, this (as well as UTMB, bc both are amazing) is top choice, I hope they give me a chance! I have friends that go here, they love it! Fingers crossed!

I feel ya, all is quiet on the Houston front for me too. Come on UTH! I'm smart and caring too! Maybe they're saving me for just before the prematch so I'm fresh on their minds.😉

UTH only sends out about 10% of their acceptances by prematch 🙁

I have a question for the people who interviewed there or any of the med. students. Which one comes first the two interviews or the tour/information about the school? or are the interviews divided into morning and afternoon? Thanks!

It's divided. You'll find out which group you're in when you sign in in the morning. Interviews are from 9-11 or 1-3

Im interviewing here this Friday, I just had a quick question. Does anyone know if we are supposed to RSVP for the social or just show up?

Just show up, its very low key and congrats!

Oh is it even worth going to? As in, is it worth taking off work etc. to attend?

I enjoyed it, it was a good chance to meet a lot of the students and ask some questions you might not be able to get answered on interview day. Its really just a social event, so if you can't attend, thats alright too.

I received an invite this afternoon to interview 10/15! I'm crazy excited and of course a little nervous :scared:. Just wanted to let everyone know so you can be sure to check your e-mail! Hope to meet some of you there. 🙂

Congrats!! I'm still in the bunch who are desperately waiting to hear back from Houston :xf:

Don't worry! You will hear from them. My GPA is a little lower than yours and so is my MCAT and I've heard from them!! (although I did take my pre-reqs AT UT, although they probably don't care) so don't worry....you will hear something soon!!

I've got an interview on 10/15 as well, and I'm planning to attend the social the night before!

My tmdsas was transmitted on 8/30 (took them over 6 wks to process arghh), and I heard back from UTH on 9/24.

Good luck everyone!

Congrats! Stats sounds great, so jealous but wishing you well with your interview!!

I finally called the admissions office yesterday. They informed me that since I have not received any email from them, my app must be under review...

When did you transmit? Could they tell you any information or did they just say you were probably under review.

I have not received anything either, but I didn't transmit that long ago. Still hoping they give me an interview, or better yet, an acceptance offer!!

Thanks Libby! Much luck to you as well!

Thanks! Definitely don't have your amazing number stats, but still keeping fingers crossed! Let me know how it goes for you!

I transmitted mid- August. They could not give me any more information...😕

Unfortunately that happened right around the beginning of the interview season.

Do you know why?

When I saw her spoke, I thought Dr. Kellaway had a good understanding of students, and really listened to students.

I got an e-mail stating that she's going to speak at Texas A&M this evening, and it said she's from admissions. Perhaps a mistake, I don't know.

Hey all,

Just got an email invite for an interview on 10/22!!

I am super excited!

Wanted to know from people that interviewed already
how they thought the interviews went and questions they received?
Any advice for interview day would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I just interviewed there yesterday and I thought the interviews both went very easygoing. I know every school says that, but I thought the interviewers here were definitely very easy to talk to, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Ahhhh come on UTH give me an interview!!! pleeease? 😀

Where'd you get accepted to?

So far, my top out of state DO choice, AZCOM... But still waiting for Nov 15th before I pay the deposit to tentitively hold my spot there... Still have a shot at both Techs. I don't have any other interviews in Texas yet though... Not sure I will get any more here after being complete since July. 🙁

I've actually been complete since late June, and I've had only 2 Texas interviews. But I had a new (much higher) MCAT score transmitted to TMDSAS on September 1. I'm not sure if a lot of these schools will go back to my application and reevaluate it, but I still have hope! 🙂

Awesomeness! Congrats perhaps-future-classmate!

The interview feedback section is great.

But I'll just relay my experiences. My first interview was pretty standard. He asked a few questions about my career goals, why I wanted to go to UTH, family background, etc.

My second interview was with the associate dean of admissions. One of the sweetest ladies I me along the interview trail. She was really laidback and conversational.

The students and faculty are ridiculously nice. You truly have nothing to worry about. Just relax and be yourself. You'll do great

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear back! :luck:

Patience is a virtue.

hey yall. I am a physicist. I am kind of interested in compiling data on the different schools. I will compile the data, run some analysis and post it on SDN.

If you have received an interview to UTH would you please send me a private message in the below format. The purpose will to generate statistics on the people who have received interviews to try to suggest what each school might be looking for to help future applicants. Thank you.
