I just received notice today that I am invited for an interview on March 8th. 😀 My status previously simply said "under preliminary review", which it had said since November. Last week I contacted the admissions office to indicate my continued interest and ask about my file. I also sent an update. This was my 3rd year applying.

Waitlisted today.. so dissapointed.. i had one of the best interviews here.. hw gud is the waiting list here.. anyone know?

Waitlist is not a bad place to be...many people come off the waitlist. I am waitlisted right now, as are probably most of the people on this thread. Sucks, but it could be worse, and it is definitely not like other waitlists at other schools.

Anybody on the waitlist get accepted this time around? Or hear anything yet? I am so anxious I feel like I'm gonna puke.

I hear that nearly all of the OOS applicants interviewed are waitlisted initially at Vermont.

Basically, your chances are probably still very good here.

Accepted today 🙂 3.83/29R Double Degrees, OOS

Interviewed Sept 21st, OOS WL a month later.
Wrote a letter of interest and an update letter after.
I had a great interview and was simply told I'd be wait listed since i'm OOS.

Congrats! I am experiencing my first "real-world" snow day (Did not think it was possible) and it makes me wish I was out boarding in Burlington even more! For the rest of us still hanging out in the OOS waitlist group, I called yesterday and was told that there will be very little movement until April (aside from a few sporadic cases, ie shamefame). Hopefully this helps calm some anxiety. Hopefully we all get great news come April/May!

Thanks for the update. That helps take a load off my mind. I am officially putting my dream of attending UVM out of my mind for a few months at least. Good luck everyone!

Were you able to talk to them on the phone or through email or through their applicant center?

I sent a message through the applicant center to simply check on my app since its has been under preliminary review for months now last week and finally heard back. My application is being read and I should have an update in the next week or two. Patients is a difficult virtue for this pre-med. But keep your hopes up if you are still under preliminary review. If they are reading them then there must be interview spots open still.

I am OOS, 32/3.82. Strong philanthropy, leadership and health care employment, weak shadowing and no research experience.

Good luck to all!!!!

I got the "Out-of-Area" wait list message. Is there just an out of area and an instate wait list? I had thought there was a more regional wait list as well.

to my knowledge there are just the two. from the composition of the class however, it's clear that there are internal guidelines that they shoot for (yes we have lots of Californians, but they haven't overwhelmed the Vermonters yet!)

think about it, though: does it really make a difference, anyway?

I don't think so. I've heard of the in state and I'm on "out of area" and I'm from MA so I don't think there is anything in between.

just wanted to know if any other applicant who is interviewing on the 10th would like to stay with me to split hotel and taxi costs...i have a room reserved at $50 so it'll be even cheaper if we split it even! 🙂

Does anybody know how much of the OOS waitlist ends up receiving an offer? Also, for those of you who called, what exactly did you say to the admissions office? Do they even take note of the applicants that called in?

I'll be a 4th year at UVM in a couple more weeks, so things may have changed some since I was doing the application process, but here's what I'd mention to those of you waitlisted. If you're in-state, I believe they waitlist almost everyone, and then eventually work it out using that waitlist. For OOS students, I know of a few in my class who came from that waitlist, though I hardly surveyed everyone.

Don't get too discouraged about a WL at UVM, I'd bet a large percentage of the current classes enrolled spent some time on a waitlist here.

Edit: Also, if you have any questions about UVM COM or Burlington, let me know!

I can never get a hold of a live person at the admissions office via phone. Anyone know a good time to call?

Anybody know when the next adcom meeting is?

I called earlier this week I believe they said it was March 1st. They usually do a small group of acceptances with each adcom meeting, but the majority will be pulled in late April/May

OK I'm from MA too. I don't know where I got the idea of an in the area waitlist, maybe because it seemed strange for them to call it an out of area waitlist instead of just non-resident or out of state.

I think from an adcoms point of view it would make a difference, its fairly common from people in New England to move around the various New England states and I think someone from CT or MA would be more likely to stay or return to VT to practice than say someone from California or Virginia or something.

there are two waitlists: Vermont and not-Vermont. In order to be considered Vermont, you have to submit the application for In-State Status (even if you've lived your whole life here!)

This is an interesting point, especially for us, given that most of the students are from out-of-state. It's known that people are more likely to settle down where they do residency then where they went to medical school, so the administration is going to be realistic about the likelihood that a lot of people will end up coming back. That said, if people have strong ties to the New England/NY area, I could see where that might come into play. If it matters at all, it probably matters most when you make a point of it in your application or interview or LOIs, and then how well that stated rationale jives with the rest of your application. I know most of you that are from out-of-state got the question about "why vermont?" in your interviews.

then again, our class i believe currently includes 29 Vermonters and 26 Californians, those are the two states best represented. Plenty of the CA people had never been here before being accepted other than their interview day. The desire to recruit state residents is a stated objective of the admissions policy here, but it's obviously not the biggest one. Residents are accepted at a much higher rate because there are so few of them that apply relative to the size of the total pool. It's a small state, after all 😀

Thanks for the info. I loved this school so much, wish we didn't have to wait so long.

Does UVM have a place to store luggage? Is it even ok to bring our luggage on our interview day?

They do have a place to store luggage, so it's fine to bring it. I'm also going to PM you a response later this evening 🙂

Anybody interviewing on Thursday? Where are you staying?

PM me!

INTERVIEW INVITE 2 DAYS AGO!! 🙂 March 31st. Late in the cycle but I will take it 🙂

I just randomly checked my status today and found an interview invite!

I haven't gotten an email about it or anything yet. What a nice surprise.🙂

Interview date is April 5th.

Those of you with recent interview invites, did you send update letters recently? I hate the portal system for sending them messages do they take paper letters vai snail mail?

I am still holding out for an invite! 🙂

I sent them a brief message through the portal system about a month and a half ago. Nothing profound, but I did end up getting an interview invite a week ago. I doubt it's a causal relationship, but one never knows in this game.

I asked them this question through the portal. They told me I can send updates via email to [email protected]. They sent me an email confirmation a few days after I emailed them an update/LOI.

I haven't received an invite yet either... I'm still hoping! :xf:

I sent them two updates, but neither was really recent. The latest one was on Jan 6th.

I'm curious; did anyone who got an interview receive an email / snail mail about it?

I got an email after my status was changed on the applicant portal.

post-interview..

was told that update letters won't really be necessary but intent letters would be nice.

heard that the call the UVM about being in the area works well too to get interviews.

Any news on spots left? Or when last dates for interviews are? I know it's late but I'm still hoping for a shot!:xf:

Last year they sent out invites until the beginning of March, so maybe a week left?

My fingers are crossed as well.

final interview dates are for the first week in April. invites should still be going out into March, as people are going to be dropping out/declining them once non-rolling acceptances go out, and of course we'd like to keep our dates full to see as many of you guys as possible!

Hello everyone.. I just joined the network, so totally new to this - nice to meet you all. I tried to catch up with the thread (but man, 17 pages were quite long) and I just have a quick question (so sorry if it sounds repetitive, I'm sure you all went over this many many times already):

So the adm. committee meets March 1st and more decisions will be made then? Is that just for the applicants who are interviewed? or for the ones in pre-interview hold (I noticed everyone calls it the "small-pooled" applicants)?

I'm also in the "small-pool", I completed my secondary quite late (Early December). I wonder if I still have a chance... I really want to go to this school because I want to pursue primary care.

Anyone know if we have to meet the march 1st deadline for our financial aid stuff if we were placed on the waitlist?

Yes, in the e-mail they sent us they said:
We realize that you have not yet been notified of an admissions decision, however, it is important to submit your FAFSA online by March 1, 2011 regardless of your admissions status.

Do your Fafsa ASAP and list all schools that you are still considering. You should always do your fafsa as early as possible every year. fooo show!

Really hoping they are still sending out invites...

Finished this application in early August and am waiting for that status to change. Sent in the update/intent letter earlier this month and even with other prospects I would probably take UVM.

Oh yes, sorry I wasn't more clear. I did my FAFSA already, but I was mainly asking about the other pieces (e.g. sending in W-2's or other supplemental documents/applications UVM may need). Does this need to be done before acceptance?

No need to send those unless they request them. However, if your taxes are done then go back to your Fafsa and correct it if you made estimations.
