i hope we are all correct in assuming that they still have not started WL movement...it seems reasonable considering the number of people continuing to withdraw :xf:

To any current students: I think I remember seeing that the white coat ceremony is the January of the first year. Any idea on why it isn't at the beginning of that year?

White Coat is in February, after the end of the Micro/Immuno/Intro to Path course. I think that the timing is significant because it takes place on the eve of the start of the Doctoring in Vermont course, which is the first clinical experience we have formally, as medical students. It's also significant in that the first year is about halfway over, and we've had a lot of time to bond as a class already. 'Earned our chops,' so to speak.

Personally, I think the ceremony was a lot more meaningful happening when it did, and not during Orientation when we didn't know each other very well, and hadn't really done anything to deserve it besides get accepted. It takes place in the Ira Allen Chapel on campus, people's families and many faculty come, it's pretty special.

I was a little curious at first, but that definitely makes a lot of sense. A little surprising it's not more common. Thanks!

so i hate to be the bearer of bad news, but i spoke with shauna from the admissions office yesterday and she told me that they the wait list has already started moving and that the waitlist has shrunk 🙁

i'm not sure what that means, but i think it means that they have already offered a lot of spots to WL students, which makes me sad because i haven't gotten anything.

she said it will continue to move though. of course, she wasn't very specific.

just thought i'd tell you guys.

good luck to everyone!

Although...saying that the waitlist "has shrunk" could mean that there have been a lot of withdrawals from the waitlist...and that would be a good thing.

I have a hard time believing that they have offered A TON of spots off the waitlist, and that almost nobody on SDN has reported one. I know that what is posted on SDN doesn't perfectly correlate with admissions rates, but I would think that it's a good indicator of where acceptances are happening.

This doesn't sound surprising to me. I was under the impression that most of the accepted students were on the waitlist at some point (I'm talking about those people accepted throughout the whole season), meaning that the waitlist has been moving for a long time. If the waitlist has shrunk, I would interpret that as fewer people left on the list (because of acceptances and withdrawals), which would be good news for us as they continue to pull people from the short waitlist list. Did she specifically say that they have started pulling people form the list after the May 15th deadline?

Your interpretation is spot on. Even the part about not being spot on about whether they've accepted since May 15th. I don't think we'll be able to know for sure if they have, even by calling. Will have to wait for something to show on SDN to be sure, or I guess, be accepted yourself haha. :luck::luck:

hello again 🙂 she did say that they have started pulling people off the list after may 15th. i really hope that you guys are all correction your assumptions about SDN. i know that SDN isn't the greatest measure of admission rates, but there is some positive correlation, right?

hopefully, more admissions will come!

What day did you realize that you weren't going to be accepted at UVM?

I think mine is May 27, 2011

This is true. I did call a few weeks ago.. I was speaking to a woman and asking if she could tell me anything about the waitlist, and she passed the phone off to another woman (should have gotten a name down) who told me to keep waiting and look out for news in June...she said they need some time to process/look through files.

Of course that won't keep me from stalking this board day and night, like several others I see!!

Bless you for being persistent on the phone and for reporting the results.

I called yesterday to ask for a little more information about the wait-list. The lady spoke very clearly about the wait-list.

"There will be little bursts of movement between now and the first day of classes. We had a large number of people withdraw from the wait-list after the e-mail was sent out." [paraphrasing]

Just stay positive.

And if you think you have it bad, try being a Vermont resident (not born or grew up in Vermont) on the wait-list.

People keep posting on here saying there hasn't been much movement since May 15th, but if you look back at the forum there was quite a bit of movement in early May (2-5th) and more posted ON May 15th. The movement in early May was probably still associated with the impending May 15th deadline.

Also, you have to recognize that people had to choose one school or another on May 15th but this does not mean that spots opened up at UVM on May 15th. There have been lots of people posting here that they withdrew from the waitlist, but unlike other schools I am waitlisted at, I am not seeing a lot who have withdrawn actual acceptances.

So, the way I see it: there has been movement already...probably associated with May 15th. The waitlist is shrinking. And there is bound to be a little more movement.

Everyone just breathe a little.

Finally got mine today after the email in early May. Glad to know it's official.

And absolutely loved the maple lollipop they sent with the packet. 😀

I didn't even know to expect an official packet, that's great. What's in the packet other than an official letter of acceptance?

i had a dream today that i got accepted to UVM accidentally LOL 🙂 i was at the office and told the staff that i had taken a year of class in a foreign country (which was not true) so i wanted to make sure that they were going to be accepted. for whatever reason, they assumed i was admitted, and my status changed 🙂

maybe that's what us waitlist-folk need to do? 😀

I was fake accepted to a school this cycle... not very fun lol. Probably the worst mistake an admissions office can make. But yes, lets all keep up hope for the waitlisters :xf:

Haha that had nothing to do with UVM, so ignore it I guess. Was in response to other poster's dream about fake acceptances.

Good luck waitlisters!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

its been 2 weeks since may 15th now, and still no news 😕
lets keep our fingers crossed that june brings good news

The official letter, the lollipop, and some papers that were also in our interview packet (match list, fin aid, etc.).

Does anyone know of property management companies or realtors that might be able to help me find a house to rent? I have a family and pets and selection is limited on Craigslist.
Thanks!

Kathleen Brisson is the apartment owner from whom we're renting. Same boat as you: family + pets.

Is that a realty company? Similar boat: family - pets, been looking for apts. online and seen some interesting ones on Burlingtonrent.com

I'm not sure what they are. They may own the apartment building. I found the listing on Craigslist and then some other places I called recommended her as she allows pets in her rental properties (495 Colchester Ave.).

Glad we got this done in advance because it's tough with pets.

Hi everyone! I'm a 1st yr. Congrats on those who have been accepted! Enjoy the summer while you still have time. You earned it!

For those on WL, don't give up hope. Someone in my class got in the week before class starts.

Hope that helps.

Anyone ping admissions lately? Any news on whether there's movement? Little quiet....

i called this week, they said they have small movements here and there.. again nothing very concrete.. =/

Yeah that's pretty much the same thing they said to me. Boo

fb group now at 101 🙁...does this mean theres little hope left?
i really dont want to sign a lease at my accepted school yet if theres any chance i can get into here, but at the same time i dont want to end up in a crummy living situation for a year by waitiing to long to sign a lease...

Vermont Gods pleaseeee accept me soon and make my life a million times easierrrr!

You know, it's really not right that they can drag this out all summer. People have life decisions to make, and money due at other schools. I'm in a similar situation as the above poster, and I just wanted to say it's wrong of them to hold out on us like this.

The least they could do is give us our ranking on the list, so we know if we're in the top tier or the bottom tier. I'd be able to plan much better if they gave SOME sort of idea of our individual chances. Am I wrong here?

I just got accepted to my state school and will be withdrawing my acceptance to UVM. I'm sad about that but maybe one of you will get my spot.

The thing is they can't know how many they'll need to accept, so they have to drag it out all summer because they'll be losing students all summer. If their list really isn't ranked, it's doubtful they have tiers. Even if they do have tiers, if they told you that you were in the lower tier, you would move on. So what interest would they have in having half their waitlist emotionally or otherwise move on when they still need to pull people throughout the summer? I know it's not an ideal situation, but at least it's somewhat logical.

Try to relax, this is a stressful process and the only thing you can do now is try to make it through it - i.e. go do something fun.

Good luck!!:luck::luck::luck:

Congratulations! Best of luck to you!! :luck: (And to me too..)

Statistically speaking I feel like someone from this thread absolutely has to get in this week...

Hey guys... I may have been hearing things, or maybe I am confused with a different schools curriculum... But I remember during the interview that they mentioned something like having a "surgery concentration" for people that wanted this option. Anyone remember this? I keep looking on their website and on SDN for mention of this and I am coming up with nothing. I was going to call admissions and ask, but then I wanted to make sure I wasn't confusing it with another schools program before I call... Anyone??

gravity just posted- Senior Surgery Major. Thats quite awesome for people going into surgery.
Acoustic, ya you're definetely right its not purely a primary care school, anyone who attends can pursue whatever field they like, but there is a lot of focus on providing community care.

Did you get in off the waitlist, or are you just excited?? Anyway, I VAGUELY recall something about a surgery concentration, but I could be mistaking that for a student interest group on surgery. I can say with confidence, however, that they are looking into developing a "public health" concentration, but it hasn't been developed yet. My impression is that it was somewhat of a response to not having a formal MPH program. Given the presence of that concentration, a surgery concentration might be possible. Again, it's probably just an extracurricular interest group and doesn't really change your education, just adds to it.

You can call admissions referencing the public health concentration and say you thought you heard one about surgery too, which would be a good segue to avoid the "oops, that was a different school" awkwardness lol.

I don't agree with the statement that UVM is a primary care school. I don't really think any schools are primary care schools. Sure some will graduate more people that go on to primary care, but you'll have just as good opportunities for specialty care at UVM, just maybe not as much emergency medicine in the form of gunshot patients every 10 minutes. Again, though, do you really expect to see the super rare and interesting cases as a med student? To you, they're all super rare and interesting, well they should be, and your education as a med student should focus on the fundamentals, not the rare. You're going to get limited exposure to that no matter where you go. Just my 2¢.

Good luck!!!:luck::luck::luck::luck:

I did not get off the waitlist… yet... 🙂 I was writing up another letter of interest/intent and I wanted to discuss my background in trauma surgery/emergency medicine and my strong desire to become part of this surgery program at UVM. But I needed to know a few more things about it, and of course I didn't want to quote the name wrong. Haha.

Thanks!!!

I want to do surg too.. Orthopaedics with a trauma fellowship.. Hopefully we both get in and we can push each other toward greatness!

Hey all, sorry if this is repeat info but I just called the admissions office to ask if they could give any advice for improving applications for the next cycle. The person I spoke with told me that they are unable to give any advice to currently waitlisted students, as we're still considered active applicants, but that if we don't have an acceptance come August we can set up a time to speak with Tiffany Delaney about ways to improve individual applications.

Just thought you'd all like to know! Good luck to all 🙂

this is 1 of the schools i am waitlisted for...

Has anyone on SDN gotten in since May 15?
