I'm pretty sure you just need to do your FAFSA, for any school. Like undergrad you have to submit the preliminary numbers by the beginning of March, and it doesn't matter if you haven't filed taxes yet and the numbers aren't accurate. The point is to get the application in at all, because you can update it as many times as you want later and they're time stamped for when you submitted the first draft. You just need to have submitted something by the deadline to be eligible for any aid, and then you're good for the whole system. So the deadline is with the government, not the school (although there are different deadlines for different states and their financial aid [so also government and not schools], they all hover around the beginning of March). I wouldn't assign it to any school you didn't think you really had a shot at (but you need to only pick one initially, and can assign more later).

The only deadline after the initial one is however fast you want your actual financial aid package from a school (obviously they can't generate one if you haven't submitted final numbers), which may or may not change where you go to school. So that's a personal thing that won't exclude you from actual aid.

Hey! Nope, you don't have to have it submitted to interview, but if you DO have an interview, definitely do it by midnight tomorrow. Otherwise, you miss priority placement, and may not be considered for school based aid (scholarships etc.) You should know though, that you can absolutely submit with just "estimated" numbers if you haven't filed your 2010 taxes yet, and then go back later and update the numbers.

You should add schools to your Fafsa and submit it if even if you haven't interviewed there yet! If there is even the slightest chance you could get in someone where then you need to meet these deadlines or else you may not be eligible for financial aid.

I’m super excited! Anyone have any advice for my interview? It would be much appreciated! I know very little about this school…

For those that are wondering, I am a less than stellar applicant... I have around a 2.9 undergrad overall and science GPA, a 3.65 graduate GPA and a 27 MCAT. But really solid ECs, clinical and research experiences... And I had amazing letters of rec from physicians I work with as well as from my PI and graduate science professors that I know well. I applied to this school on the first day I could submit the application, June 1st... However, due to my letter packet coming in late, I was not complete until mid July.

I have been accepted here and I love this school! I am 99.99999% sure I am going here (literally the only thing that would keep me from it is getting a full ride to another school with all expenses paid, and maybe they offer to buy me a car and a dog too), and I am really excited to go back for the second look weekend. The only issue is that I have to take time off from work to go back up there. My boss is totally cool with this, but (understandably) she'd like to know sooner rather than later when I might be taking a few days off. Does anyone know when UVM will tell us the date of the second look day? I know I should just call and ask, but I am hesitant to pester them about this when they are so busy. To any current students--do you remember approximately when they told you the dates last year? If it's within the next week or two that's fine, any later and I might have to bite the bullet and give them a call...

i can't remember when Second Look Day info went up on the application portal, but last years SLD was May 7th. Just keep checking

I have an interview here in a bit, and for one reason or another, I'll be in Burlington for several days beforehand. Does anyone have any suggestions for things to do/see granted that I probably won't have a rental car? I'm a big fan of the outdoors.

Also, is the public transportation system non-existent? Should I get a rental car?

I got a rental, which was expensive, but convenient. I was there for 3 or 4 days before my interview, too. I mostly hung around Burlington, visiting Church street, where they have a lot of great places to eat, as well as the gorgeous campus. I watched a movie at a theatre near Church street, and I also drove to Mt. Philo, which was really cool and had a great view of Lake Champlain. Burlington is a really cool place, and it's nice to have a car to get around wherever you want. To be honest, the place I had the best time visiting was the UVM campus. I walked in and around the medical area, and also wandered through the undergrad campus, which is really beautiful. One of the reasons I got a car was because I was staying in Colchester, which was a little too far to walk. If you're staying closer, you may not need one. The cabs work fine too, if you don't mind paying 10-15 bucks every time.

I think it usually takes them at least a few days to process the results. I hope they take some waitlisters off!! God I want to go here so bad!!

There are two time slots for the interview. If you have an earlier interview, you have an optional tour after (a late interview means an optional tour before). You might be able to call UVM and ask them specifically to put you in an early interview slot. Then you could skip the tour and probably make it to the airport in time.

call them they're really nice about it. If you talk to Mary, she'll gladly make sure you get the 1:30 interview slot so you can get to the airport on time!

Last year there was very, very little movement. I blame the lousy economy.

I'm about 99% certain that I'll be waitlisted again this year (I was on UVM's wait list last year)

I had a 45 minute phone call with someone in admissions last summer, mid-late July. I was informed that it was a "weird year" because there wasn't much movement.

I think it was the 5/15-wait-list-bump that normally happens that didn't happen last year at most Med Schools. It seemed like most people got an offer, and sat on it.

Being wait-listed as an OOS at UVM is pretty much a given from what I understand as well.

She said that yes, every OOS applicant would be waitlisted. Some might only be waitlisted for an hour, and some for months, but everybody will be.

No, no # was given. However, she said that historically, after the 5/15 "signing day" they usually let in 2-4 students PER WEEK. Last year, that number was 2-4 students PER MONTH.

That suggests to me that either 1, students loved UVM, or 2, the economy sucked and people were taking any acceptance they could, in lieu of being unemployed for a year.

It is, but from what she said, it sounds like they use the waitlist in 2 different ways. UVM puts people on the WL that they are planning to accept in order to verify they have the right person, and then the applicants are accepted ~immediately off the waitlist. The second use is the more traditional use...people that are going to be used to backfill seats.

So maybe we can assume that if we're on the WL for more than a week or so, we fall into the latter category.

some years it does freeze over completely, this is not one of them. most of the lake is frozen, though. The shallower bays pretty much always freeze; people put ice fishing shacks out there, some of which are quite posh! also drive p/u trucks etc out onto the ice.

I just tried to do that through the VSAC website, but it looks like they still only have the 2010-2011 academic year grant. So, it doesn't seem possible to submit a 2011-2012 state grant yet. I know you mentioned we should do this ASAP, but what about the date discrepancy??

I got an interview invite for Mar. 24!! I'm SOOOO excited!! *tears*

I am an old applicant (please don't ask me how old I am, haha), with not-too-impressive stats. I have 3.0 Science GPA (with a HUGE dive in my Junior year grades, which I'm sure I'll have to explain why at the interview), 33 MCAT, no research experience but a lot of clinical experience with a focus on health care for the underserved populations. This is my 3rd (and perhaps last) time applying to medical school, I think I've invested almost a decade of my life in applying + strengthening my candidacy.

I really want to attend University of Vermont. The school has such a strong primary care program, which after almost 9 years of clinical experience, I am positive I want to pursue.

It is my first interview invite.. so I am very nervous and a bit lost on how to prepare for it (I'm reading the interview tips and stuff online like crazy, we'll see how it helps). Can anyone who has interviewed already tell me a bit about the interview day? Is it a group interview? Panel interview? How many interviews do you have (I heard some schools have multiple interview sessions)? Was it conversational Vs. interrogating? And.. is there a word of advice you could offer? If you don't feel comfortable sharing that much information, please just share anything you feel comfortable talking about... it will be much appreciated.
