I agree, though Vandy is probably out of my league. One can only hope! :xf:

Hey guys,

orientation is underway here so I don't know how free the admission office is, but I'll cross my fingers with you that you hear something soon!

As for "fit", Cole said it pretty well. It's sort of frustrating because you don't know how to "make yourself" into what we're looking for, but there really isn't a clear number of traits that everyone shares, except that we're all really pretty friendly and outgoing. Shy, super-studious science nerds are really in the minority, which I have found to be really unlike most other med schools. Everyone in my class is really easy to talk to and just a little quirky. Social events are super popular. There is a huge focus on "wellness", both physical (I don't think there is even one member of my class who doesn't work out regularly or semi-regularly) and I guess spiritual. They try like hell to make sure we're happy, healthy, and working at our fullest potential.

So I think the best way to emphasize that you'd fit in here is to be as chill as possible on your interview. Obviously be a professional- they're really strict when it comes to professionalism- but being open, sunny and smiling will take you a lot farther than sitting there stiff as a board and muttering something about your research and how much you love science. They like really passionate people- although we're each passionate about something different- so that's another thing you want to emphasize. If cooking, or knitting, or surfing just gets you super excited and you could talk for hours about it, mention it in your application and in your interview. Be memorable for your uniqueness, there's nothing memorable about perfect grades and scores. A little spice goes a long way.

Of course there are more subdued members in my class but even they're incredibly sweet and nice once you talk to them and they have their own "quirks", I guess. So I think that's what "fits" here. If you don't fit that's perfectly fine- there are tons of other schools that work if you're more of a subdued, studious academic (wash u comes to mind) who just prefers to be left alone to study instead of getting uber-involved. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but it probably wouldn't work here as well as it does elsewhere. So you might not get in here if you're like that.

In general, I really think you have to view rejections as a good thing. It's the admissions office's way of telling you that you wouldn't be happy there cause you don't fit exactly right. They know more about how to make up a class than you do, so trust their judgment. I know it stinks to be rejected- I certainly received my share- but don't get super bogged down because it's pointless.

how long does it take to get an email saying they have your application after AMCAS sends your application?

same... I'm pretty sure they verify in waves and we missed the first one not completely sure though

Thanks LET & Cole! Very helpful!

Vandy started giving out invites today last year. Anyone get anything in the snailmail yet? If not, hopefully next week...

Meh, I guess we'll just have to be patient. A few days or a couple weeks isn't too long. Shouldn't be too hard for a bunch of pre-meds, eh? :xf:

OMG I GOT THE INV

Just kidding.

You troll !! 😀

You troll !! 😀

I second that~!!!! made my heart jump...

have you guys decided how you would open that letter???

I'm gonna do same thing I did for the MCAT..... i.e. get down to party meister jager.... so that it's either a party or you're just to f-ed up to cry about it. And then on to other schools.... cos it aint the end of the world...

I'll probably tear the little corner where the glue doesn't stick, then poke my index finger into the envelope and ply the rest of it open.

I'm not much one for letter-openers.

I've been hawking this thread to see if anyone got anything ... come on Vandy I want you!!!!

Yeah, me too, if I see on here that the letter has arrived, I'm just going to leave work to go home straight.... there's no way to wait until after work...

Common Vandy, please reject or invite me.... cos I feel like I've been reduced to a lil high kid waiting on a date from a crush, lol...

Tell me about it - nothing that important is happening in lab this afternoon!

I went to the trouble of tracking down last year's interview offer dates, but, as it so happens, not many of my schools seem to be on last year's track. So it goes 🙂

My heart keeps skipping a beat whenever I see a new post in this thread. It is very stressful. We should all pledge not to post in this thread unless one of us has news of receiving an interview invite. 😛

does anyone know if their essays are usually the same every year?

Sorry about breaking the pledge (do I even count?), but I found out that interviews should be starting up in about 2 weeks- which means that letters have probably been sent or will be sent very, very shortly. I would look out in the next couple of days and early next week...

Commence freakout....NOW! 😱

okay you are an exception to the pledge....EVERYONE ELSE: from now on, until interview invites come out, ADHERE to the pledge.

Wait..... So are we starting the pledge now, as in with your post being the starting point? Or, are we going to post a pledge post and that is the last post until the end of the pledge?

Sorry, I just want to be clear so I don't violate the pledge and thus look bad to the adcoms that are obviously keeping an eye on this thread.

Where can I find the application to be part of this pledge? What are the average stats of the pledgees? Where can I check the status of my pledge application? Will you ever e-mail me about a pledge process interview? I'm dying from waiting! How much will it cost me to enter this pledge?

Heeeyyy OneTyme, are you still repping 4/10 for life? lol.... I remember those crazy waiting times for the MCAT; I'm in zen mode right now.... nothing can stress me~! NO MORE~!

4/10!!!!!!!!!!

We all just need to chill. Becoming a doc is an eternal process of anticipatory waiting. Just like with the MCAT, you gotta chill with the flow.

Yeah Jamiu!

4/10 for lyyyyyyffffffffffeeeeeee!!!!!!!

Ok, let's do a new pledge that we won't post anything on this thread until we get the results of our old pledge secondary interview invites.

But then we would need a new application thread for the old pledge, and then a new thread for the new pledge too. Ugh my head is spinning 😕

Got the invite...via email no less. It said "VUSM Invitation to Interview - email followed by hard copy." This is weird because my committee letter has not been released to AMCAS yet, and also I thought they would only be mailing letters?

3 essay - autobiography, diversity, and greatest challenge

Can you post the e-mail and/or a screenshot of it? In the confirmation for the primary, they explicitly said that e-mail notification wouldn't be provided.

I'm not all super paranoid, I'm just trying to determine whether my trolldar has identified a false positive.

My concerns exactly.

Cole, I promise I'm not a troll, and yes I got the same email earlier saying that they would only be mailing information. You'll see when you get the essays (and I'm sure you will based on your MDapps) - I'm just trying to be helpful. I'm not going to post the whole email because it contains personal information and a password, but here are the essays:

Autobiography: Write a brief autobiography. As completely and precisely as possible, give a picture of yourself, your family, and events you consider important to you. In doing so, identify the values that are of greatest importance to you. If you have completed your undergraduate education, please comment on what you have done or have been doing since graduation. (1200 word limit)

Contribution: The learning environment of the medical school is enhanced by the inclusion of students with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences prior to medical school. What in your background or your experiences will uniquely contribute to this learning environment? (500 word limit)

Challenge: Please discuss a challenging situation that you faced in the past. Why was it challenging? How did you handle it? Knowing what you know now, would you do anything differently? What did you learn? (500 word limit)

Congratulations! These prompts look interesting, I hope I have a chance to work on them. Are you able to schedule an interview after completing the supplementary application?

Thanks wildlifeiskey. Here is what it says on the applicant portal regarding an interview. I've only looked around so far, so it looks like you are able to do so. To others - I don't really care if you believe me, I'm just trying to be helpful. Choose to believe it or not.

Online Vanderbilt Secondary Applications are sent only to those applicants we invite to interview. After completing your secondary application, please access our Interview Reservation Scheduler to schedule your interview. Please schedule your interview prior to making travel arrangements. Thanks for posting some proof so that we aren't constantly wondering whether you are playing us or not. I remember that from last year. Congrats on your very early interview! I'm very jealous..

🙂 At least the fee is manageable! Thanks for offering the news I appreciate it a lot. Good luck; sounds like getting the application done sooner is advantageous to scheduling an earlier/more convenient interview!

I did not realize that Vandy does not accept AP credits. I never took english I or II at the collegiate level because of my AP exemption. Do you all believe this will exempt me from an interview/secondary?
