My application was complete as of this weekend, and I got a rejection today. Man, they really must not like me - but then, why bother with a secondary?

I'm really sorry for you. This process feels really random at times. I got rejected from 2 schools today too, but can't email them to ask until after March. That's not going to help me this cycle. I just feel grateful to have several interviews. Stay positive though and I hope you get into a really great school.

I had the complete then the forwarded to admissions status.. and now it went back to the old complete status after 2 days?? anyone know if thats a bad sign or what that means??

The same thing happened to me. Let's hope it's not a bad sign. Weird right?

hey does anyone know when the next round of results will be released?

So I guess I'm not the only one who hasn't heard anything in a while...

I submitted all my app's anywhere from Aug 1st to the 15th and have not heard anything except silence from most of the schools. It seems like a lot of schools have not been sending out invites lately. Does anyone else feel this way or maybe its a bad sign. 🙁

OMG! I was totally thinking the same thing. Whenever I open my email all I hear is *whoosh* (haha, the sound of wind). I submitted at the end of July and early August. We must of submitted at the peak of the cycle, and plus classes have started, so that could have also caused a bit of a hold-back.

I sure hope so! I am reapplying this year (to 17 schools) and it is terrifying to have heard NOTHING. I check SDN and my email compulsively and nothing... I was wondering about that though. Especially with all these out of state schools that have 10,000 applicants, makes sense. Guess that makes me feel a little better. :xf:

your mdapps says you already have an acceptance...?

and you have a ton of awesome EC's and stuff. good job!

Do you guys know if this school accepts updates. Grade updates or activities updates?

And thanks, StarryNights. A positive attitude always helps, right? This was just the first rejection that I took personally because I actually screened in.

I know my process is going to be full of rejections, but I really liked VCU and thought I might have a chance since I was OOS and still got a secondary despite my low GPA (3 cum, 3.35 sci as a postbac with some additional upper level bio classes this past year, all As). My MCAT is very good (34Q) so I was hoping that some schools would see past the challenging GPA because I have a unique story and 4 years of research experience.

Oh well, we shall see!:xf:

I'm reapplying also. Do you think that universities look down upon re-applicants? I didn't apply to VCU last year, but I did to other schools, and I don't think it's my stats (34N, 4.0) or extracurriculars. Hmm... curious. I was telling my friends that I would love to sit-in on an admission's committee meeting just to see what they talk about.

I cant believe you didn't get in anywhere last year! You have awesome stats. Im sure you will have better luck this year. I have a friend who is also a reapplicant and she got WL along with me, never ending up getting in and the AdCom's told her it was her clinical experience (she had ~20 hours). Sometimes I think they just blindfold each other at Adcom meetings and shoot darts at a wall of applicants pics and who they hit is who they let in. 😕

I got waitlisted last year at WashU. I applied too high and too late 🙂. Like around November/December for my secondaries. Applied early this year, and broadly and hopefully that will help. Good luck rpgdude; I hope we both make it this year :-D

Well, the admissions committee IS quite random if you really think about it. I talked to a friend who was on the committee for something, don't remember, and she said that after reading a bunch of apps, there is really no good way to distinguishing people. In the end, there were just a few apps that she really advocated for and sometimes she didn't even know why.

My PI is on the admissions committee of the Harvard MD/Ph.D program and she says she hates the adcom here. She hates the entire process. So I bet she's not alone. I've heard way too many stories from med students everywhere about how the heck did so and so even get in, and how did so and so not manage to get it. It's so unfortunate. 😡

HELP! My application closes in 2 days (sunday) and the system won't let me pay the application fee!!! After I click "pay by credit card," it brings me to this weird page that says "Please check the VMusrID.Back" What should I do!! The office is closed.. Please help. Thanks..
😕:meanie:

Try again later. If it doesn't work, don't worry. Take a screenshot just in case. Call them on Tuesday to tell them what happened. I'm sure you'll be alright once you talk to someone on Tuesday.

Seriously...I went to second look for a school that put me on it's waitlist (so naturally 95% of the people there were already accepted). I went because I live 30 min away. There was one guy who asked stupid questions every single time there was an opportunity to ask a question, and even when there really wasn't. He didn't sound too bright, well, in all honesty, he sounded like a hillbilly fresh off the tractor. I'm not dissing anyone who grew up in rural areas, but he did not sound intelligent in the least bit. Guess what? He was of the accepted persuasion. It frustrated me to no end.

The same thing has been happening to me too for the past few days!! My application is due Sunday too!? Have you figured anything out??

I was verified a few days ago and I got this on the website...

"The committee's initial screening resulted in a decision not to pursue your file any further. The Committee does not send supplemental applications unless they are confident that the candidate will be competitive within our large applicant pool. Our committee does NOT offer reasons for this action but does suggest that a discussion with your pre-med advisor might be worthwhile. Based on our school policy, those applications with only MCAT scores taken after September during the year of application are not reviewed."

So this means a rejection right..? just wanted to double check

Yup, sounds like a pre-secondary rejection.

Saved yourself $80 😀

the one thing i have noticed about vcu is that they reject people within a few days after submitted in months of August and beyond. read last year's thread.

Has anyone done student hosting yet? I ofund a list of phone numbers- do I just call them? I dont mind but if we are supposed to do this some other way i dont want to just start bothering med students lol!

Also having this problem...and the same due date. I sent them an email, hopefully it's ok to take care of payment on Tuesday.

Yeah, I did read last years thread and noticed the same thing. I guess if you dont get rejected right away may be a good thing.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you and the others will be fine.

Nah I got the complete one and then a rejection.

3.9/32, OOS

Lol one question, I have a lot of research but very little volunteering. Also, in my interest essay, I cited the opportunities for neurological research along with it's curriculum, networking opportunities and clinical exposure (Led a head injury study for like 2 years).

I wonder if focusing on the research there hurt me?

It probably did. I'm almost exactly opposite of you: I have no research but tons and tons of volunteering, and so I did a lot of homework in selecting schools to apply to that weren't so research-focused to better my chances. VCU was one of the schools I applied to, and I am currently small pooled in the second-highest category. We have almost exactly the same stats so I'd bet that had something to do with it.

How much of an emphasis did you put on research? If it was a decent, standard amount I don't think that was it. I mentioned somewhere above that if you look at VCU last year, they tend to reject people very soon after completion when people submit in the months of like August and beyond. Other than that they just may not have like what you keyed on or how you wrote it overall. No worries though, just have to move on.

I'm still complete and have been since July! GIVE ME A STATUS - ANY STATUS! 🙁

I had a paragraph on it talking about the various things going on with their neurological research and something about how I want to be involved with that.

As for the essay, I had it reviewed by several people before submitting it and most people who reviewed it said it was a strong essay.

*sigh* Could be the August thing. I submitted it like on 8/26.

Your research paragraph was fine. You prob did have a strong essay. But I think it's their August thing. I haven't seen other schools do this. But hey any interviews yet for other schools or anything? Buck up, hopefully you'll be fine.

Lawl...one for the NJ medical school. (Love them) XD

It's too bad though. It seems like a pretty good school overall with it's networking, clinical exposure and research opportunities. Plus everyone seems kinda friendly over there.

Ah well. Good luck to the rest of yas!!!

I focused on research in my essay as well (both the VCU specific one as well as my PS) and received the "May" status. I did have a couple years of clinical volunteering though, and even though I didn't really point it out in the essays, it might be something they really look at. With your numbers though you'll have no problem this cycle at many schools 🙂

haha woops yeah i guess it flew past by me. yeah i mean generally with a lot of schools, little volunteering does not help at all. these schools like volunteering obviously so in the end like dancin said could've been your lack of volunteering rather than your essay. gl though. i mean you have at least 1 invite. that's good.

A friend of mine is applying next year, and has next to no research as well. Can you disclose the list of schools that in your opinion, are not so research focused so I can help my friend comprise a list come next year? That would be saiving him a lot of the research time that you have already invested, and would be much appreciated. Thanks so much.

I have a really hard time believing that VCU, or any school for that matter, would just reject someone cause they applied in August rather than June or July. August is still really early in the process, and don't you think they'd miss out on a lot of good candidates? It just seems odd...how did people come to this conclusion?

I submitted in July and got the 'may' status -- just means I'm on hold I guess. 3.73/33Q OOS.

iunno I mean go to last year's thread. I remember looking at it and noticing fast rejections in the later months of the application cycle. but i dont exactly remember when that started happening. BUT anyways scarlet probably didn't have enough volunteering activities/hours so VCU probably didn't like that too much.

Hey my secondary was also due on 9/5, i submitted my essays but when i went to pay the application fee i got the same error. Today i got an email from VCU closing my application b/c the deadline passed for it being completed, but i did submit everything besides the pay due to the error i kept receiving and because of the holiday i could not call the admissions office today. Did anything happen on your end or did you figure out a way to pay secondary fee? 🙁🙁🙁
