Same here!

Oh, and Shere, you're in-state, right? I saw earlier that you got into UMDNJ, hence the assumption.

Yeah, I actually live about 10-15 minutes from Cooper.

I hope you guys get in as well - I enjoyed hanging out with all of you during interview day, we had a really fun group.

I can guess which group you were in, by saying we had a really fun group. Yes we DID. hehe. I enjoyed our group, and would look forward to seeing you guys again.

Hello guys,

I got a few questions regarding travel and lodging when it comes to interviewing at Cooper. It seems like it is a common issue since the school has decided not to help with any travel arrangements this year. Hopefully this will change next year, but whatever, I'm going to try to give some general ideas. I have lived in Philly/South Jersey for about 10 years now. Here are some driving directions. I'll post public transportation stuff later if needed.

If you are driving in, or taking a rental from the airport, just go ahead and find any hotel around I-295, exits 28 to 36. I can't say anything about particular hotels, but the locations are perfect in regard to getting to Cooper in the morning of your interview. You can certainly stay North of Camden but with no really good highways it can take a little while to get into town. You are going to want to stay at least a few miles West of Cooper to get into a nice neighborhood. If you want nicer hotels go to exit 36, this is a Rt-73/I-295 intersection and there are tons of business travelers here. Cherry Hill is also a good option to find hotels and you can't go wrong with a Holiday Inn in my opinion. I love the Holiday Inn. Either bring a GPS with you or practice the night before - Camden and the surrounding area, like all 'old' areas, get confusing quickly when driving.

General Camden area.

Of course you can stay in Philadelphia. That is no problem either and you know you will find some good (expensive) hotels there. The hotels around the airport are nice, and this route would also lead to a quick trip during the morning of your interview.

waitlisted. =/ i knew about the school's policy though. Still disappointed that i have to wait for a couple of months before finding out.

I have no idea if my group was that group, but I definitely thought that my group was fun.

In ANY case, rejected today, as expected.

Priority wait-listed today. I'll take it as long as that means I eventually get to go here. Top choice.

Edit: This part made me laugh: "We would be proud to eventually offer you the option of being part of this school that will live by its mission as we change our community."

I would be proud to eventually offer you my hand in marriage, but I'm gonna date these other people first.

Nice! I think that gives you a great shot. 🙂 🙂

I guess that's what separates the priority wait list and normal wait list. mine just says

"We know that, should the opportunity arise, you will enhance our school and enjoy being part of this school that will live by its mission as we change our community."

Ditto. At least I wasn't rejected! For those on the priority waitlist, congratulations! It basically means you're in! I doubt all 50 people who get acceptances post-interview will eventually go here.

Interviewed 11/18. And yes, we had a fun group (if I'm thinking of the right group, unless both groups were fun).

Interviewed 11/11 - Found out on Monday that I was on the high priority wait list.

To be honest, you guys are making grand assumptions about those on a high priority list "definitely" getting in. Unless someone has direct knowledge that they are only giving out exactly 50 acceptances, let's all stay level-headed.

Best of luck to all of you.

Agreed, I'm certainly not taking it as a guaranteed acceptance. Except I framed my email and already told all my friends I was a doctor.

It would be cool to know if it worked this way: 50 initial acceptances, 25 priority waitlist (or whatever), such and such many waitlist, the rest rejections. I was thinking about asking for specifics, but really only because I'm impatient.

I've thought about asking as well, because they seem so secretive about how many people they plan to accept. Maybe it's because they don't know! In that case, they will likely not tell us anyway, and it's wasted effort.

Those on the priority waitlist- there were two timeframes indicated in my email. First they said I would be notified in "early 2012" and then they said they expect to notify me by March. Did your emails say this too? I was hoping early 2012 meant Jan or Feb... I was planning to ask them about this also, just wondering if anyone else has already asked.

Yeah I don't think that they're being secretive on purpose, I really just think they don't know -- and I'm guessing that there are people they've accepted who don't know yet their status at other schools, blah blah blah we all have at least a tiny idea about how this system works.

I noticed the time discrepancy as well. "Going to the waitlist early 2012" doesn't scream late March to me. Part of my academic life was spent closely reading text as an English graduate student, so maybe we're just splitting hairs here. I told my fans they would be waiting until April to hear about my next move in life.

Great minds think alike 😎

I sent in a letter but did not get a response about whether or not they accept extra material. Might as well do it, it can't hurt right?

Would people who have interviewed mind posting on the interview feedback page? Cooper has been added. Thanks!

Dr. McGeehan told us they can accept 50 students and only 50... I could be wrong but he repeated it twice, at least on the day of the interview. After that, they will pull from the high priority waitlist. They're interviewing into March so perhaps "early 2012" could mean as soon as they finish their interviews?

I think what he meant was that the inaugural class can only have 50 students. But in general schools will admit twice as many students (at minimum) as they can hold with the expectations that half of them will get admitted elsewhere and go there.

I can say that is what Cooper is doing but that is how most admissions department work even outside of med sch.

Ooops meant Cant

Thanks for the clarification. I guess high priority waitlist isn't guaranteed :-( On interview day they said if you're on the waitlist (they didn't mention high priority vs. normal waitlist on interview day, maybe to be discreet?) it basically means you're in a really, really good spot. Hmm. I think the dynamics here are different since this will be for the inaugural class. It's all a bit unclear... regardless, the waitlist will probably see some movement.

Nah, another student asked the same thing to Dr. McGeehan, and he said there will ONLY be 50 acceptances handed out. He explained that although other schools usually send out more because they know a certain amount will drop, the fact that Cooper is a new medical school means 1) they DON'T have a traditional number of students who they know will drop and 2) the rules are a little more strict for them due to their new-ness, and thus they can't overbook themselves.

So if anyone who gets one of those 50 acceptances drop, they pull from the high-priority list. The high-priority list is basically their "extra acceptances" that other schools do.

That makes sense. I hope they aren't at the 50 cap yet.

I spoke with Dr. Dayton about the waitlist question I had (March=early 2012?). And I was told that it means they could go to the priority waitlist as early as the start of 2012, but it will most likely be February or March when they will go to the list.
She said that being on the priority list more than likely means an acceptance.
Tough to not to get my hopes up with that kind of news! 😍

Oh one more thing I forgot to say.. I asked how many people are on the priority list. I didn't get a number, but she said it's a very small number of people....

Out of curiosity is this ur top choice?

I interviewed and was really impressed. The staff is great and truly shows an interests in getting to know students. My interviewer had def reviewed my file very well! More so than any other school i've been to.

Biggest con was not being able to see the building, or the layout. We toured the hosptial, but if you've done any sort of volunteering or shadowing or just visited someone in a hospital, you've seen a patient's room, nursing station and the cafeteria. So that was no big deal, but everything else was great.

Yes! Absolutely. I think even if I get into a more established school, this is at the top of my list.

And I would say 20 also, realistically. Ideally it would be like 10... ha.

Dr. Dayton and Dr. McGeehan talked about you when they gave a presentation about CMSRU at Rowan University last week. Just thought you'd like to know that they think VERY highly of you! 🙂

Wow, that is very flattering. Both of them are pretty amazing people.

Received an e-mail regarding the status of my application within a week of submitting my secondary!

At this time our interview slots have been filled; however, we do anticipate that additional slots will open after January 1, 2012. Your application was very interesting to us, and you been placed on the list to be offered an interview when a slot becomes available. There will be very few people on this list.
We hope that your holidays are enjoyable, and we wish you the happiest of seasons.

What a nice e-mail.:woot: I'm really excited about Cooper. There's just something about being a part of the inaugural class! Can't wait til January!

all their emails are so cordial, they kinda give you a warm feeling. specially after getting rejections that are one sentence long.

Congrats! How was your overall feel of the school? Can you see yourself matriculating?

Yeah it was actually confusing at first cus I thought you were the same person. Maybe in the grand scheme of things (in the perspective of a nebula) you are.

Dude, what is up nebula buddy.

I've been accepted here, and I was just curious as to what type of reputation this school will have, say, 4 or 5 years down the line. What do you think? Do you expect the school to become a more and more selective, and become a mid to top-tier school? Or, perhaps, will they remain less selective in terms of numbers, while trying to find students who fit their particular mission? I'm just curious as to what the future of this school holds.

Judging from their emphasis on diversity I believe that the school will try to find students who fit their mission, rather than focusing on numbers. It will be a while before the school will have a real reputation though and everything is still up in the air.

and nebulae rock!

Sure, the hospital is space-age, the staff were professional and friendly, also my interview group was so fun and social. If my interview group is any indication of what my classmates will be come next summer, I would be thrilled.

I only have two reservations:
1) I wish I could have seen the actual school building. Its isn't complete yet and we couldn't go inside to take a tour. Hopefully it will be open by second look weekend.

2) Price. I'm an out of state applicant. I won't be able to make a solid decision until I get a financial aid package and see what my costs will be. Most of the time out of state tuition at a public school is more than a private school.

Any more questions? Fire away!

congrats =) Since you are a pharmacist, i know who you are. yes our group was awesome. sorry to tell you that i won't be there next yr (well i won't put it definite but i am waitlisted), hope you have a great time there if finance permit. i think both you and i enjoyed our interview day.

We were told about 75 acceptances will be given. What youre referring to is the fact that they cannot go beyond 50 students for the charter class yet understand people will hold multiple acceptances. They are limited based on the LCME during the beginning of the accrediting process and what they were approved for, then they will pull from the priority waitlist. But SDN is full of misinformation and selective hearing (to which I may be no better lol) So Id advise calling the admissions office for clarification.

...........look at number 2 on this list.

why is everyone assuming that this will not be an issue?

I dont think people are assuming its a non issue, but there is danger no matter where you live. This is something you will have to consider in attending school there if accepted. But rather than sum up a city by its crime ranking perhaps you should come with the mindset of opportunity. Imagine the amazing opportunity to effect real change in a community with such an obvious need. Imagine what impact you can have as a medical student by offering programs, helping people better gain access to care, and being a symbol for camden that elsewhere can look to. Im an applicant here and choose to think on the brighter side of the issue.

Safety is a concern in any city, but I think with the skills and education we all have as medical students we should not think in terms of statistics, but in terms of people. Use common sense no matter where you go. Avoid being alone, late at night, etc... Youre a medical student applicant, I believe you have the capacity to make those intelligent choices.

Hey guys! I just received an e-mail stating I've been put in the Interview wait list since all the interview spots have been filled as of now. According, to the e-mail I should find out after January 1, 2012 as to when an interview date may be granted. Is anyone out there in a similar situation?

I fully agree with the counterpoint. In fact I am excited to help out in a community in need. What I really meant to ask was....

What is it about Cooper that makes a lot of potential students feel safe on campus?

Everyone seems to feel that they are protected to a certain extent, which is awesome. Is it the location of the campus, an outstanding campus safety service, a security system...?

As of now, nothing really besides the fact that most of the violence happens further South/West of Cooper. The area around the campus is very sketchy.

Once accepted I think it would be a great idea to participate in 'second look' to see how well things fit you as a student. Worst part is the medical building itself wasnt available for a tour to get a real sense of what features and study spaces were available, but maybe once among fellow classmates and some questions to admissions staff this will help everyone make an informed decision.
