Heads up to everyone waiting: I know it's hard, but chill. You'll find out soon enough, and chances are, if you are interviewing this early, things will work out for you somewhere. Whether it's at Georgetown or someplace else. Easier said than done, I know, but try to find other things to take your mind off things...there is always the "next thing" to get anxious about. If it's not the interview, its the post-interview decision, then the financial aid, etc etc. once you're in med school ,it's the tests that jam as much info in one week as an undergrad semester, then if its not that, its the boards. It goes on and on. My point is, you are entering a field that is characterized by stressors. So take a deep breath and relax 🙂

Thanks boulderdash. I think the waiting is nerve wrecking because this decides your future. When you're in medical school, at least your future is more clear compared to waiting for a decision that determines the rest of your life 🙂 What year are you in medical school?

i interviewed 9/30; might i get a decision as soon as 11/1?

I interviewed middle of Sep and Mrs. Sullivan said to expect a decision around the beginning of November, rather than in Oct, so I'm thinking maybe a month and a half is the norm because of the amount of applicants they need to review? im not really sure though

I interviewed this week and they said to expect a decision in 6-8 weeks after interview. Also, for acceptances from the waitlist will occur at the end of Jan/ early Feb and then every month after that. The admissions person also said to write a letter of interest next year around March if you're truly interested in the school, and after the date when schools can see which other schools have accepted you (don't remember the date), to explicitly state why you would pick Georgetown over the other schools. Letters of interest can be sent as frequently as every month or so. A good half of each class comes from the highly competitive applicant pool waitlist, they said.

can a medical student from GTSOM please tell me what clinical experience you get there in your first two years? also what hospitals do you guys do rotations/shadowing at? Just GUH or do you guys go to Walter Reed and other hospitals in the area?

No problem. Clinical experiences (and really, the doctoring curriculum) are definitely emphasized during the first two years here. By the second week of school students spend one afternoon per week in the hospital as part of the Patient-Physician Communication course. Basically, you are in a group of 6 or so first years and your preceptor (an attending physician). The first week you observe your preceptor conduct a patient interview, then you return to your discussion rooms and talk about the experience. Then, one person from your group goes each week while the others watch--followed up with discussion once again. At this point your interviews are very open-ended and are designed to make you more comfortable talking with patients. Obviously, you are not expected to provide ANY medical advice or anything like that. I found the course to be a great experience--it gets you more comfortable talking with people and you learn a LOT by watching your classmates go through it. When it's your week you have some more responsibility too because you go to the floor, arrange the interview with the charge nurse, etc.

Anyway, after that course (which is the first few months) you slowly get more involved in your clinical experiences. It's October now and we are finishing up our second doctoring course that is similar to the first, except you are split up in groups of 2 for your interviews, and report back to the bigger group at the end. Starting in the second semester of the first year, you are placed in an ambulatory care setting where you are paired with a doc and work with them. From what I've heard the experience at this point varies. You submit preferences, so if you want to be in a surgical setting you can focus on that, for example. Just keep in mind that if you elect to do something specialized like surgery, you will be able to see a LOT, but will often have less of a hands-on role than if you are in more of a primary care setting. This makes sense seeing as you are just a first year. I've talked to M2's who did primary care for their ambulatory care course and some say basically learned how to give a comprehensive physical exam, for instance.

Also, interspersed throughout all of this are other "doctoring" courses like Service Learning, which places you at an underserved site in the DC area. Like ambulatory care, experiences vary. A few examples: I know one who works at a vaccine clinic and another who does nutrition lectures at a school. There are definitely an ample enough of these doctoring courses, to such a degree that at some points you just want to have that extra time to study and it gets a little annoying. But they always remind you of the bigger picture: why you are going to be a physician, what it actually means to be a doctor, etc. Oh and side note, once anatomy starts in Nov these doctoring classes are toned down a bit, but pick up again later in the year once people get accustomed to everything.

Hope that helps!

also what hospitals do you guys do rotations/shadowing at? Just GUH or do you guys go to Walter Reed and other hospitals in the area?
This is another great thing about GUSOM. You do your rotations within MedStar health, which is a network of hospitals in the Washington-Metro region. Walter Reed was one of them but it has recently closed. There is a list of hospitals in the network that I won't duplicate, but among them are the huge, inner city Washington Hospital Center and the Nat'l rehabilitation hospital. Side note: those who are concerned that GUH is not a level 1 trauma center should know that for our ER rotations students most often (might even be required to?) do their rotation at Washington Hospital Center, which is a level 1 trauma center. So, the great thing about being a part of Med Star health is you get to see a lot of different clinical contexts and can see hospitals from different perspectives (community, inner city, rehab, etc.)

Have anyone gotten any interview invites this month or in the past few weeks??

I've been patiently waiting since 8/10. I honestly loved Georgetown when I visited. Really hoping for an II.

Rejected pre-interview. Complete 9/27. Best of luck to everyone still in the running!

Sorry for the status. 🙁 Thanks for the update and good luck on the rest of your apps!

A good half of each class comes from the highly competitive applicant pool waitlist, they said.

interesting fact. do you have any idea as to what percentage of applicants on the waitlist are ultimately accepted?

Accepted via phone call!! It was so great hearing Dr. Renart's thick German accent!

AudreyP, unfortunately they didn't tell us anything about that.

Placed in the competitive applicant pool. My interview didn't go so well, so it's not a huge disappointment.

Does anyone know what the difference is between the competitive applicant pool and the waitlist? Or are these the same thing?

they are the same tep, applicants are either accepted, put in competitive applicant pool or rejected. do you remember who your interviewer was?

I interviewed on September 14th

congrats!! but are you sure that you're posting in the right thread?? there is no one in the med school by that name, and g-town doesn't call with decisions.

I was typing the response on my phone and wasn't sure how to spell his name. It's actually spelled Rennert. He is for sure a doc at Georgetown... http://pediatrics.georgetown.edu/attendings/cyasfaculty/rennert/

I think he may have jumped the gun on calling because my status hasn't changed on the website and I haven't gotten an email yet. I'm expecting them on Monday and I suspect other people will either get emails or phone calls on Monday.

As for the phone calls, I either read on previous posts on this thread or on last years thread that people have been called by their interviewer to get the good news. This isn't always the case, but it has definitely happened.

All-in-all I'm not worried that it was a mistake...

My interviewer called me with the good news as well, though he said the official emails may not be sent out for a day or so."

This is the thread from last year. About halfway down the page is where I found those two posts. Not all people were notified by phone call, but a couple were.

ACCEPTED!! Woke up at 5am for no reason, proceeded to receive an email from GU. It told me a decision had been made, and that I should check my status on the application website!!! AHHHH I'm gunna be a doctor 😀😀😀

I got the same email, but I can't find anything different on my web site. There are no messages or anything. Would you mind please describing exactly what you saw? Thanks!

Just got rejected pre-interview. Sad, I thought that I fit the schools misson really well. Was really excited, but I guess it wasn't mean to be. Hurts more because I'm actually visiting in DC now

quick question for accepts. Is there no deposit to hold a spot before May 15? So we just have an automatic place held?

Rejected as well..

I clicked on the link in the email (it links you to the same website as you used for your secondary application) and when I logged in, there was a heading on the main page that said a decision had been made, I clicked on it, and a new window popped up with the letter =] Good luck!

I interviewed in mid-September. 🙂

Thats what I think... I really want to click something that says I acknowledge their acceptance, but I guess we just wait.

Accepted this morning via e-mail. Interviewed on 9/13 I think.

Congrats! I interviewed on 10/3, hope to hear good news in a few weeks!

Also your profile pic made me think I was seeing things for a second. Did... did it just move? Nope, nothing there... It happened again!

Just got a competitive applicant pool notification. Interviewed 9/12. I'm glad it wasn't a rejection and that I still have a shot!

Definitely! When were you complete, if you don't mind my asking?

Woke up this morning to an II here. Complete 9/30 🙂 Anyone coming on December 2nd?

Interview invite in my inbox this morning! 😍 Complete 8/19, interview scheduled for 11/30. 🙂

Congrats to all the new invites! I really enjoyed my interview day. It seems like most of the interviewers are really laid back, and they just want to get to know you. One interviewee from my day had a rough experience, but everyone else had conversational interviews.

Good Luck!

just a question to anyone who got accepted already ... did you all get a telephone call to notify you that you were accepted or did some of you who got accepted just receive the 'status update' e-mail?

I know it seems like all the competitive applicant pool or wait listed people got an e-mail so was curious if everyone else who got in right away just got a call
