What's up everyone!?!?

Just got done with my first semester at Stritch and I just wanted to stop by and wish everyone good luck with your applications!! I hope ya'll consider Loyola, this is a great place to start your Medical Education. Plus, have have you seen our gym!?! How can you pass that up?!? lol

If ya'll have any questions, search out for those of us current students still active on SDN and ask away. We're all here to help each other reach the same goal! Good luck!

This sounds silly, but Loyola's gym is actually a huge attractor for me. I am one of those people that need to exercise to stay sane, and Stritch's gym is one of the best I have ever seen. 👍

For MCBG or Anatomy did you find the books helpful? Or were the handouts and powerpoints the instructors provided sufficiant for doing well on the exams? Are the exams structured like the USMLE or are they more traditional science exams?

I would like to know this as well. Thanks!

My application has been "in review" for about 2 months now...do they do silent rejections?

SteveJMarist, that is not silly. It is important (more than ever) to keep your sanity when you are in medical school. Before coming to Stritch, I was a newly converted exercise junkie so although I appreciated how the nice gym when i visited, i didn't know how much i would use it. Now after my first semester, I have at least 3 exercise classes that i MUST attend every week. And it really is helping me take care of my body and my sanity. 🙂

For MCBG, no. I don't think I used my books at all. Most of what you need for MCBG is found within your lecture notes. Throughout MCBG, the professors give us objectives to go along with each lecture. If you do the objectives and study the notes, you will pass the test.

As for Anatomy, that's a horse of different color. Anatomy was truly a course that is not cut and dry. I feel like everyone has there own study method for attacking the anatomy material. The only book that seemed to be consisted for most of the classmates I talked to was BRS Anatomy (Chung). It covers the material in a more concise format and then each chapter has USMLE Board type questions related to that material. Sometimes the questions would be harder than what we were actually tested on, but then other times test questions would be very similar to the Chung questions. Another book I personally liked for Anatomy was Gray's. Some people used it and some people liked Netter better or just stuck with Chung. Like I said, it's all about figuring out what works best for you.

So MCBG: Only powerpoints and handouts and Anatomy: A little bit of everything. You DEFINITELY can't survive on ppts and handouts only for this class.

As for the exams themselves, MCBG feels a little like a blur, but I feel like there were more traditional science type questions with maybe some Board type mixed in. But I feel like Anatomy was more Board-type questions.

Like ND2009 said, we are on break with 1/8 of our MD😀 so ask as many questions as you would like! 🙂 Good luck everyone:luck:

just put on re-review...looks like I got passed up by Loyola... good luck everyone else!

I couldn't agree more! Three exercise classes- that's great. Do you find that it conflicts with your studying a lot?

I got a call from a 773 number today...turned out to be a wrong number...BIGGEST TEASE OF MY LIFE 🙁

Steve, that was meant to be a little silly but also a little bit serious. I too am one of those people that needs to do some physical activity as down time. I am definitely not one of those 24/7 studiers, gotta get my breaks in from time to time. When it came time to choose between my top two choices, access to gym facilities was on my list. Maybe not at the top but it was on there. I really like the placement of Stritch's gym. You have to pass by it on your way to your car so I feel guilty/lazy if I have my workout clothes and not go. Touché, administration, touché.

As far as the MCBG and Anatomy classes go, I would agree with Ladoctora, for the most part. For MCBG, some of the material was new/really old, so I did use some textbooks as resources to help me build a good foundation so that I understood what the profs and handouts were talking about. But I'd say that most people were not like me and relied solely on the objectives/handouts and the lectures. For Anatomy, I honestly, stopped going to class. I felt that the profs (even though they are hilarious!!) were simply reading the stuff on the slides. I relied solely on THE BIBLE, aka BRS Anatomy by Chung. The profs said that anything in there was fair game; so, that was good enough for me. Plus, it has great USMLE-based questions at the end of every chapter. These questions were so good that a few even made it onto our exams. But yeah, I'd agree that for every class, you have to find your own studying style and don't let others' styles freak you out. What works for them might not work for you. Hope this helps.

No, because I am learning that you make time for what you want to make time for. I'm with ND2009, I'm not a 24/7 studier. So, if it's watching a TV show or exercise class or cooking or talking to family/friends on the phone/Skype or anything that gives me a break from the books is a good thing for me. I have classmates that barely go to the gym at all, but they try to make time for other things. But also, I have classmates that exercise in some way almost EVERY day. So, I think it comes down to (and you will hear this in your physician self-care lectures in PCM1) taking care of yourself in whatever way that means to you. Because when your a doctor, you can't just work 24/7 and I think we have to take that same approach to studying also. YES, you have to study a lot, but it's med school. You expect that, right? lol 🙂

Yes, it was definitely meant to be a little serious and a little silly, and you hit it on the head when you said that it is on the factor list (but not on the top). Funny you mention the passing the gym on your way to your car- my tour guide mentioned the same thing haha.

Thanks for the input! One way or another, I think I'll fit in the exercise, even if it is just light exercise. About PCM- are you enjoying it so far? I was really interested in it as I was researching the school. Do you think it has been helpful?

I am enjoying PCM. It's a very unique class to Loyola and I think it is very valuable. During first year, it's easy to get lost in your science classes and forget the reason you are in medical school in the first place. I feel that PCM helps us keep focused on that. The lectures we have are a mix of clinical skills and non-clinical skills lectures that allow for discussion of the profession itself. Which leads me to mention small groups. I love my small group, but every student might not feel the same way. I have wonderful facilitators and our group always has interesting discussions. I think the way Loyola introduces us to being a doctor through PCM is pretty cool. Also, the shadowing component (Physician and Third-Year mentors) to PCM allows us the opportunity to put to practice some of the clinical skills we are learning as well as get early exposure to clinical medicine.

Man, I've been pending further review forever lol. Come on Loyola, show me some love! Please...😀

Yea, it sounds like a nice break from all of the basic science. The small group thing is pretty appealing to me too 🙂.

My status was switched to "Reviewed" as well. Is that basically a rejection? What are the chances of getting an interview at this point?

During past years, interviews after the New Year were for positions on the wait list....but who knows. My status has changed to my app being reviewed by the committee, so here's hoping for an interview:luck:

I've been "under review" for almost 7 weeks now. I'm glad I haven't been put on hold for re-review, but otherwise I'm not sure what to make of it.

The admissions office makes it pretty clear that they save spots for students throughout the interview season. I interviewed close to February last year and was not waitlisted and I have heard of people who interviewed as late as March or April and were straight out accepted. So don't think that just because you have a New Year interview that you are interviewing for a wait-list spot.

Also, if you have a true interest in coming to Loyola, send a letter/email or call. I have classmates that were invited to interview pretty soon after showing some kind of interest. Because in anything, we usually want to be with people who want us. So, show a little love if you want to get a little back. But be genuine because that's an important aspect to Loyola. :luck:

That's good to hear that later interviewees can still be outright accepted. I don't know if they are just not posting on here at all, but it seems like very very few people who already interviewed have been waitlisted/rejected thus far.

I've been under review (We have received all required information and your file is under review with the Committee on Admissions.) for 3 months now. Has anyone else been under review for this long? Should I call the office and see what's going on or something?

Thanks!

Just got put in the re-review pile. I'm happy that this wasn't a rejection 🙂

I am in the same boat! I have two acceptances at comparable schools but like Loyola's location and would like to interview there

For those whose files are complete and are under review. My application was complete and 'under review' in last November and didn't get an interview until March! SO, don't give up hope!! And out of the 4 of us that interviewed on my day, 2 of us were accepted so don't think that any interviews after December are 'waitlist' interviews. Good luck and happy holidays!

Nice, thanks for the encouragement! I've been complete since mid-september 🙁

I've been complete since end of August. Crazy that I was finally able to hear something!

Is Loyola open to pre-interview updates? Sorry if this has already been asked, I didn't find anything when I searched the thread.

Loyola welcomes update letters, letters of interests, and new letters of recommendations. This school has a holistic approach to the admissions process from what I've heard, so the more relevant info, the better.

Interview Invite yesterday! Complete 9/23. Was kinda disappointed they were really inflexible about interview dates. I have an interview at Northwestern on 1/20 and would have loved to do it all in one trip...but it looks like I will be going back to Chicago on 2/10...still very excited though!

Congrats! And good luck :luck:. Thanks for adding when you were complete! **I sent my app around the same time, so come ooooonnnn II. You know you love me Loyola. 😉p

I've been complete since 9/6. Whenever I check my status it has always been "completed and under review". Is this a good sign or did they forget about me. Four months and no update? I'm getting worried.

I'm in the same boat! Anyone care to explain???

I have been complete since mid-September, and just checked my status today. On hold 🙁

"Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail. "

I have the same status since about 2 weeks ago :/ does this mean we are passed up?

I bet there have been others who had that status but still got an interview.

I know Loyola re-reviews throughout the cycle and is receptive to updates, so I'd say a letter of interest is the best way to get noticed if you're put on hold. 🙂

Your file is complete and pending further review by our Committee on Admissions. If you are granted an interview you will be contacted by phone and/or email. Our interview season is September thru April and your file can be reviewed several times during this time.

my status has been like this since end of august.. i called and they told me that i've been put on hold...altho it seems that there are different hold statuses

My status just switched to this. 🙁. Makes me sad since Loyola was definitely one of my top choices.

Definitely feel ya. Had that on mine since November (no interview yet.).
