Don't sweat it. If it ends up being a rejection, just be glad the bandage was pulled off quickly. Last year I sat in "under review" limbo until March I think.

called a few people and it's a rejection. sorry man to us both. i'm baffled to say the least, and was in tears. 3.90 GPA, 30-32 MCAT.

best of luck to all else

EDIT: For those who may read out of context, this is in response to the ""Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail." status

Wait a minute, 3.9 GPA and 32 MCAT and ur rejected? That doesn't make any sense. I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet, because nothing has happened so far. Your stats say that you should be invited for interview not rejected in late July! I would chill out and just wait until you hear something from them. They probably only categorized applicants into "under review", "done review" for those who are complete with their secondary, LORs, and transcripts. They will start changing the "done review"s to either interview, hold, or rejection so don't fret. You don't know where you're categorized into

I just creeped Loyola's thread from last year, and it seems that the statuses have changed a bit from last year. It seems like the Complete, Under Review, and Completed Review statuses were just one common status last year, but there was a straight up Rejection status too.

That being said, there were some rejections in mid-August! YIKES. I guess I'd rather know now than drag it out until March or April.

i really appreciate you taking the time to write encouraging words 🙂. I hope that'll motivate some other applicants.

For better or worse, the fates of people with that specific status seem to be sealed

Who told you all this? I'm getting worried that I might get that status now.

That's actually a really common status--I applied fairly early in 08 and had that same status until January 09 and was then offered an interview for February, and accepted two weeks later. I have a friend who was under review until March, and interviewed late April and also promptly accepted. So it's not a death sentence 🙂

Basically what happens, as far as I know (keep in mind I'm not on the admissions committee, so my info may not be completely accurate) is a person's file is reviewed and can go to three places---interview, review, or rejection. Very few people get rejected by Loyola this early in the game--generally the only people who get rejected are those with a blazing flag on their application and those who don't complete their application by the deadline. Typically Loyola hands out interviews about a month or so in advance, so as you can imagine (unless things have changed), the interview pile is not going to be all that large. Everyone else is lumped together (but possibly ranked for all I know) into the "under review" category, and are re-reviewed each month when deciding who to hand interviews out to. So most people who are interviewed will have spent time in the "under review" category.

Basically, we move very slow. But trust me--if you get an interview and are accepted, it's definitely worth the wait. Loyola is an amazing place to be.

Just to clarify, you're saying you had the "your file has been reviewed by the adcom.", and not the "you are under review" status, and then you later got an interview? If so that is fantastic news, thank you.

Hmm... Well, I received all my status updates by phone--I never got any e-mails and I don't think there was an online status check. So, the wording may have differed slightly.

Still, what I remember is being told something to the extent of "Your file is currently under review, and if the admissions committee decides to offer you an interview, you'll get an invite by phone." The other message I got was something like "Your file was reviewed by the admissions committee. We are not offering you an interview this month, but your file will be reviewed again in a month." So while I wasn't going to get any interview invite calls that month, I could get one the following month. Or the following month. Or the following month... In my case is was mid-January. At 7:00 AM in the morning. (I'm from CA).

Which message I received just depended on whether they had reviewed my file yet that month. I'm sure this applies right now as applications are being looked at for the first time, though I don't know if Loyola will still let you know if your file is under review again each month--the "Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail." sounds kind of generic enough that your status may simply stay as that until you are offered an interview or rejected. But the review process is definitely continuous!

Unless you get rejected outright, which is rare (I think the cut-off scores are fairly low), no one gets rejected until April.

It's unfortunately true that the vast majority of people who get these messages will end up not getting in--but that's true at any school. Loyola accepts about 6% of those who complete the secondary (only about 50-60% complete it--I'm sure you all know why 🙂 )

Still, these messages do not equal a rejection. The majority (maybe all) of people who will be offered an interview will receive these messages.

I submitted primary to Loyola a week and half ago but still haven't gotten a secondary. Anyone know if they screen or just send them out in batches?

That's weird. I sent them my primary last Wednesday and got the secondary the next day.

Man, you must have either killer stats or be the luckiest guy in the world. No one had that quick turnaround

Has anyone else who was verified in June not received a secondary yet? I'm seriously starting to freak out here.

Finally submitted the this secondary. This one took me by far the longest to complete. So many long essays!

You should try Miami or Arizona. They're brutal, especially Miami (It has 12 essays!!!)

I was verified early June and hadn't received a secondary. I called in and they said I was under review and should hear from them in 5-7 business days. Next week guys!!

So last year, the first interviews were recorded on July 30th. It is August 2nd. I am so ready for them to give interviews out! Their secondary seems to have gone out later this year than last as well (by about 2 weeks). I am wondering if they are in general about 2 weeks slower than last year.

That first question on the secondary is driving me crazy.
"1. Describe a valuable experience in your personal development? This might be a decision you have made, an achievement of which you are particularly proud of, or a person who has influenced your life."
Surprisingly I have not gotten that question yet on any of my other secondaries. Stritch has been the most difficult secondary so far. This place is freaking me out already.
Do they give preference to Illinois applicants? I can't imagine why else they would ask in which state you claim residency.

Hey there, I'm an M1 here. Loyola does not give preference to IL residents because it is a private school. My class is composed of students from almost every state in the USA as well as some international students.

Put the needed time into those questions because they DO read them. As your time with Loyola admissions evolves, you'll realize that our school is truthfully about being well-rounded (not just said in print). Part of the way you can demonstrate that you have a brain, a soul, and a heart is through this very long secondary.

Good luck and PM me with any questions!

By the way, I had multiple offers this past year and I am absolutely 100% happy with my decision to attend Stritch. I love it here.

Submitted yesterday and already my status is the "Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail." status, making me think it's a rejection..... but then why the heck doesn't it just say rejected?

I WISH THEY'D TELL ME WHAT IT MEANS.

I've been complete since 7/27 according to them... and my status still says I'm with the committee!

This makes me assume I got a quick rejection. Why doesn't it just say rejected then... that was a status last year?! UGH. I feel like it's too soon to e-mail them and ask what that status really means - rejected, on hold, etc.

I've heard Dean Jones say on numerous occasions that he enjoys reading the secondary responses even more than the personal statement. Just be real and do your best.

You sure about that, hombre? Fourteen percent of Loyola's applicants are from IL, but they constitute 33% of interview invites. I also remember a dean mentioning something about in-state preference when he came to visit our school.

Agreed. Illinois schools (Private or Public) still have an preference for in-state applicants. Thank the Lord I am an Illinois resident and we have 7 medical schools here!

Well, I was under the impression the breakdown is thus:

Schools with in-state preference:
  • UIC (Public)
  • SIU (Public)
  • Rush (Private)
  • Loyola (Private)
  • Rosalind Franklin (Private)

Schools without in-state preference:
  • Northwestern (Private)
  • U Chicago (Private)

Where are those stats from? medicalschoolsinusa.com? If so the data on that site is like 3 years old and might not reflect that private schools like Rush and Loyola lost much of their state funding a couple years ago and therefore are less instate-oriented.

However, 73 out of 150 kids in our class (2015) are from IL most of which are from north of I-80. What that means in terms of interviews IDK. I do know it makes going out downtown nice because they know all the good places to go:laugh:👍

dang ittttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt 25 lines in MS word = 15 lines in real text box :meanie:👎

I think I am going to pass on submitting this one. I got secondaries to all of the schools I applied to and I've submitted all but two secondaries. I might submit my other one but I'm leaning towards no on this one. Seems like a great school but I am out of fuel for writing these darn things.

Good luck to the rest of you! 👍

Exactly what happened to me last year. After submitting most of them, I received this one late in the season. I saw the list of questions and decided that it was too messy to deal with this one. Lucky it came in July this year so I didn't have to skip it lol

The University of Arizona ones were almost as many questions as this one. I think that's where all my steam went. 😉

The trick for a lot of secondaries is to recycle bits and piece of, if not whole, answers. It may take a bit of tweaking to match the ideas and formats but it's a whole lot simpler than writing everything from scratch.

Did anyone receive an invite for interview?
Dude, if they did, they'll definitely be posting here just for bragging sake. That's what I would do 😀 So if you haven't seen any interview invite posts, then no SDNers have received an invite yet.

Yes. I did this. The problem is when the secondaries have so many questions that you run out of material to recycle....

I have the same status as some others

"Your file has been reviewed by the Committee on Admissions. The review process is continuous from now until the conclusion of our interview season in mid-April. If you are granted an interview, you will be contacted by phone and/or e-mail."

I submitted my secondary on the 26th so its surprising how quick the turn around time was, I am assuming this means rejection maybe?

No clue. I was complete around that time and mine is still "in review".

I dunno. I have that status in Baylor too. Still under review in Loyola and it's been about two, three weeks. One guy in this thread was lamenting over the fact that he had your "has been reviewed" status and how others have told him that that is an eventual rejection. I personally don't believe that (at least not until I see solid proofs) though

Been under review for 9 days so far. I'm assuming their office is swamped with apps at the moment.

Verified June 14 and still haven't gotten secondary.

Let's hope it's a good thing, right?

They do interview invites by phone call right? Whatever it is, I hope I get one.

It can't be bad. Not sure if they call or email. Like you, whatever it is, I am really hoping for one.

This is what I did. When is gotten the first couple secondaries completed, the rest were much easier. I just wrote from the heart and didn't spend too much time revising. Honestly I liked Loyola's secondary. 🙂
