CONGRATS ON ALL ACCEPTANCES!!

I just got done with my interview on Tuesday 11/01. They said the next committee meeting will occur 11/18. The following week is Thanksgiving, does anyone know if they'll still send out letters the following week or are they going to wait until after Thanksgiving week?

I got my letter the wednesday (11/2) after their thursday meeting(10/27), so my guess is they will mail out letters at the beginning of thanksgiving week

any advice from med students as far as housing? residence hall vs stanislous hall vs off campus

any advice from med students as far as housing? residence hall vs stanislous hall vs off campus

First off, congratulations to all the new acceptees.

Advice:
On-campus: Cheap and convenient. You will not get a 1 bedroom apartment in the res hall. I signed up for one about a year ago and last week I got an e-mail saying there was one available. The dorms (stanislaus) are much nicer, but further away (5 minute walk to class) and you share a bathroom. Plus you have no kitchen. The upside is it's furnished.

Off-campus: Better in all aspects aside from money and convenience.

I'm kinda wondering when I get some more correspondence from the school. Basically the last letter I got was "congrats, send this back with $100 if you want to attend". So I did, got my receipt, and that was... going on 2 months ago.

I want an info packet or something. 😀 I guess I could thumb through the folder I got at the interview...

You don't really get any correspondence after the acceptance letter and the receipt. You wait until like May or something and then they send you an email saying they will email you the packet with all the orientation stuff in July. As far as I remember anyway. I don't remember much.

thanks for the help with housing, debating to try to live on campus or with a friend off campus who goes to xavier pharmacy. ROLL TIGERS! lol

I'm so excited to start here!! Does anyone know when we can expect to learn of our housing placement??

I would imagine that you won't hear back until after May 15th. I'm not really sure though.

lol. Same for me. I called just to be sure that they got my check (it still hasn't been cashed) but they told me that it takes a looooong time to process and that as long as you got a receipt for it, you're fine.

Accepted! 😀 Found out last week. I have a 3.67 GPA and a 32 MCAT. And I had an IA (in case someone is in the same position).

Anyone else fill out the disadvantaged essay for a scholarship on the secondary? When do we know if we'll be rewarded a scholarship or not?

if you didn't know, xavier pharmacy is only a five minute drive from lsu, so it's relatively close if your friend lives near xavier

Is French Quarter close enough to walk to LSU-NO? I'm trying to book hotels near the medical school

You're probably talking about a mile, which is walkable EXCEPT if you're on your way to an interview. 🙄 Definitely plan on taking a cab.

yes and it's a 5 minute cab ride, so very cheap.

Not really. You don't want to book a hotel near the medical school. It's better to book somewhere downtown or uptown and take a cab or something.

Thanks so much for the information. So excited to visit NO 😀

Hey guys,
Do you think it's too late to submit a secondary now? I am an OOS applicant.

Hi everyone,

For those who already interviewed or are currently attending medical school, what makes LSU-NO distinct from Tulane? I mean in terms of curriculum/experiences? thanks

I think LSU-NO has a larger class size by about 10
LSU's sim lab is nicer
LSU-NO is mostly louisianans, Tulane is mostly out of state
Tulane seems to have more volunteer opportunities
LSU-NO has on campus housing
LSU-NO's health and fitness center is on campus, the one that tulane has in their building is terrible. The one tulane boasts about is all the way out by the undergrad university.
LSU-NO's lectures are not recorded.
I think the curricula are pretty similar, maybe someone else remembers better than I do, I don't see any information about the curriculum in my LSU folder.

Recorded lecture may be coming to LSU. There was an interest poll sent out recently for a Tegrity service (if y'all don't know what that is, it's basically video capture of what's coming through the projector with synchronized audio of the lecturer).

I'd have to say it would be a big plus (for any school that has it for that matter). I probably wouldn't go to class anymore, or at least, much less frequently, but it would be a lot more efficient.

LSU students boast about their sim lab.

Tulane students boast that they don't have to get out of bed most days.

😀

ha! This is true. When I looked at both schools, this is exactly what happened!

Also - This is anecdotal of course but someone i went to school with told me that they decided to go to Tulane because it was "easier" and it's a pass/fail v. a grading system.

oh, that reminds me, tulane is pass/fail, LSU has all that like, honors, high pass, pass, fail stuff.

I haven't been to class this block FWIW.

Class is definitely not a necessity....

Also, many of the professors teach at both Tulane and LSU.
And as far as volunteer opportunities, I probably get an e-mail couple times a week look for volunteers for some type of organization event or whatever, . I don't know what Tulane does as far as volunteer stuff, but there doesn't seem to be a lack of opportunities from my perspective anyway.

Basically, LSU-NO is better than Tulane in almost every way. I think we're on the verge of recorded lectures, and I can't delete the volunteer opportunities fast enough from my inbox.

Tulane's cafeteria is nicer, though.

Also, I've heard through the grapevine that LSUNO is moving towards more OOSers.

I actually liked LSU-NO's cafeteria better when I interviewed there.
and they say they're taking up to 40 OOS this year.

Just interviewed here. The cafeteria is very nice and you get a mix of med and other allied health students too. The interviews were relaxed and conversational but that's the unpredictable part about interviews. You can never tell 🙄

Per the Dean, the committee will be meeting this Friday 😀

I was talking more along the lines of the food quality.

Anyway, 40 is a truckload. It's always been two OOS students who had alumni for parents and MAYBE one or two MD/PhD candidates.

I do kinda wonder if "up to 40" will actually translate to 40.

anyone up for a Shreveport vs. New Orleans discussion?

shreve has a smaller class, their lectures are recorded
shreve has no rec center, none worth discussing anyway
LSUNO has a better reputation
grading schemes, I know shreveport uses letters, and takes actual numbers that you score into account, what does LSU use? honors, high pass, pass, fail?
LSUNO's buildings seem a little nicer.
I think shreveport is cheaper to live in.

Shreveport is as far away from New Orleans as Birmingham... but in the worst direction imaginable. 🙄

out of curiosity how do you justify shreveport's reputation is < than nola's? Don't both schools send students to great places across the US?

I'm not saying it is justified. But that's kind of the way people talk about north Louisiana schools in general. It's like going to northwestern state instead of LSU. People are going to think you werent good enough to get into LSU. I'm not the only one that's heard these reputations right? Maybe it's a south louisiana thing...

I highly disagree with the comment that "People are going to think you weren't good enough to get into LSU-New Orleans.". Believe it or not, some people do actually prefer LSU-Shreveport over LSU-New Orleans...Gasp, shocking I know! I think it is simply difficult for New Orleanians or Southern Lousianians to undersand why people would prefer to live in Shreveport over the Big Easy. Don't get me wrong, as a lifelong New Orleanian myself, I wouldn't have it any other way, but I can understand the appeal of LSU-Shreveport for some folks.

In actuality, LSU-S is just as good of a school, has more of a laid-back environment with less distractions (ie. French Quarter debauchery), and, not to mention, less of a chance of getting mugged walking to your car at night. Another major difference between the schools that some people prefer is that Shreveport's curriculum follows the Systems-based approach as opposed to the Od School Traditional Curriculum that LSU-NO uses. Either way, you walk out of both schools as well-trained MDs.

...And there's my 2 cents.

LSUS is my first choice, but it still gets to me that when I say that, people look at me crazy. As long as residency committees see it as as good, thats fine.

I suspect the reputation difference has to do with the respect everyone had for Old Charity, in the sense that you really can't beat a gothic tower of lunatics and gunshot victims when you're coming of age as a doctor.

Obviously due to Katrina the hospital situation is in the midst of a decade-long total upheaval, but according to Dr. Deblieux, 35% of patients arriving at University via ambulance have penetrating traumas, i.e. bullet or knife wounds. Roughly on par with field hospitals in Afghanistan.

I dunno if anyone in New York or California knows or cares much about the curriculum differences between the schools, but New Orleans's hardcore war-zone reputation carries some weight.

if any of you are interested in family medicine, shreveport actually has the better residency program than nola. just my two cents coming from a family (cousin, brother, etc.) that are both done with medical school and have both gotten into programs at LSU-S and LSU-NO.

honestly, both schools have their perks, and even though I am from NO, I do feel shreveport is just as good and 10x safer I promise you that. I understand safety is a concern for many people and the reputation from NO is that there is a lot of crime, which is very true, even at the LSUHSC facilities. I was simply walking out from research at 7pm one night and I had a white van follow me from the parking garage, so I simply walked around in circles and the van kept following, and called campus police to escort me.

Either way to me if I were you coming from an out-of-state or not knowing much about NO or Shreveport, I'd choose the school based on what fits you, and not what other people crap about that school because they're both great medical schools.

For me, the only positive to Shreveport is that they podcast their lectures. Why Nola Why? Why can't you just do this simple task.

I've been complete since 9/21 and I haven't heard anything yet. I called recently and I was told that I was under review. I'm OOS

I'm sure LSU-s is a great school but if I had to live in Shreveport I'd kill myself. Sorry north LA
