...Damn, another acceptance slot soon to be accounted for. 😛

PS: Out of all your attended interviews/acceptances, do you have a clear top choice (or two) in mind yet?

Haha I can only dream of an acceptance here. I have to say Mayo blew me away more then I ever imagined it would. The Clinic has this amazing feel to it that I really can't describe and everything is absolutely gorgeous. As of right now, Hopkins is my top choice closely followed by Michigan. BUT I think Mayo is throwing me for a loop because I LOVED the school, probably more than any other I have visited. I can see why Snuke has been all over this thread now. 😛 I don't even know what I would do if accepted here... It would be amazing to have to decide but at the same time I have no clue how I would do that. I'm just hoping for a Thanksgiving present from Mayo!

i know the acceptances for 2010 were 87, but does anyone know what the acceptances were for last year? specifically, MD only?

There is a specific number (I believe it's in the 70s), but it's difficult to say. I think I have that estimate from Gina? I'm not sure - can anyone else comment?

🙄 Thought I was crazy, didja? Glad to see that you've been at least semi-converted!

If they only accept 70-80, it means Mayo's yield is pretty good compared to its peers, only to be topped by Harvard and Penn. Do you think that 1) Mayo is just so awesome that it convinces many interviewees to go, or 2) Mayo selects applicants who are more likely to attend (interest is as important as quality?).

Many of you would say (1), (and I'm reserving judgment until I get to go at the end of November) but why do you reckon that Mayo matriculants' average MCAT is lower than most all other schools in the top 20-25? 1) Do tip-top MCAT-scoring applicants selectively not apply to Mayo? or 2) Does Mayo put large emphasis (read: significantly more than all the other schools) on non-quantitative factors like A) community service, B) clinical experience, C) mushy qualities like maturity or interview performance, or D) interest or connection to Mayo and the midwest or... not being overqualified?

(1) is unlikely because Mayo is so selective in terms of percentage interviewed and accepted, there has to be many top-scoring applicants they just reject.

There might be something to 2A, because, according to USNWR data, the percentage of Mayo accepted applicants who report community service experience is 83%, two standard deviations above the average of accepted applicants to most of the top 25 schools. But this as an explanation for yield doesn't make much sense. Why would community service-oriented people be preferentially drawn to Mayo?

In short: explain why Mayo can have such a high yield and how big a role perceived interest/connection/qualifications-fit plays a role in their admissions. Anecdotes of current students who chose Mayo over a higher ranked school are welcome.

I met three students on interview day that blatantly stated that they picked Mayo over a handful of Top10 schools. Paraphrasing, each said that the Top10 schools rubbed them the wrong way (i.e. admissions/faculty seemed indifferent, admissions/students seemed pompous, students said that their school wasn't anything special, etc.) and they were subsequently strongly pulled in by Mayo's small, intimate class-size coupled with the fact that all the students had great things to say on their own respective interview days.

With that said, I think that Mayo is a school that is much more focused on EC's/experiences than numbers. Nevertheless, numbers are still pertinent -- thus the lower than expected (albeit still respectable) averages. There were close to 10 students on my interview day and during lunch we discussed where we have interviewed/are interviewing... Only a couple had interview invites to top 20 schools -- a handful actually reported that Mayo was their first interview of the season (this is in October, btw).

...Also interesting factoid: Mayo had the largest representation of Public State Schools that I have seen among interviewees.

In essence, I think that Mayo is largely looking for something different than what schools like U. Mich, U. Chicago, U. Pitt are looking for in applicants.

Just kidding, I agree with what you said, for the most part.

When I was at Mayo, there did seem to be an inordinate emphasis on community service as compared to other schools. We all know about their respect for the patient - they actually live this philosophy and emphasize it with the students.

Of the ~12 students I met (MD and MD/PhD), maybe as high as 75% said that they'd turned down a Top10 or Top20 school, and everyone said that Mayo was their first choice. I can't think this is a coincidence, that Mayo doesn't at least partially select for interest.

Also, I'm not suggesting that people with community service select for Mayo (though I have, partly because of their emphasis on community service, but n=1), but that Mayo selects for people with community service. There are more people who greatly desire to go to Mayo than Mayo can take, so they definitely can have their pick.

Of your options, I'd say A, C, D in that order. And personality - they don't just want people who want Mayo. They want people who are genuinely interested in serving the community, who respect each other and the patient/community, and can demonstrate that through their activities and interview.

Judging by the increase in thread usage we're all getting Mayo fever, and it seems that it will just keep getting worse until the end of the day Thursday/Friday.

Oh. Happy Halloween!:beat: (I don't think this makes much sense but it looked cool.... 😎)

You hit it right on the head. I Interviewed at a couple top 10s and this is exactly how I felt about these schools. Mayo is an amazing place with amazing people. I fell in love with Mayo (hence my screen name) long before I interviewed. Interviewing there ignited my desire to attend. Now, I must say Mayo has a cult following for better or worst. I expressed some concern about Rochester's cold and one of the interviewees ADAMENTLY expressed that she DID NOT CARE and would attend even if Mayo was located in Antartica. These people seem more tied to the school than to the idea of being a physician and their own well-being. I akin it to those kids out their that want to go to Harvard because well its been their childhood dream forever. Mayo does a good job weeding out these people. They look for people not necessarily in love with Mayo but in love with what Mayo embodies. Students who would fight tooth and nail if that mission statement were to deviate and change. Not just students blindly infatuated with Mayo.

You put it better than I, and this was my experience as well. Students were not blind to any faults, but the overwhelming importance of the positives made any negatives or neutral factors seem paltry. When I asked students why they choose Mayo over Harvard/Stanford, after the initial, "Well, it's Mayo!" they all referenced the mission statement. This was the only school where I heard this as the major reason from any student.

🙄 Thought I was crazy, didja? Glad to see that you've been at least semi-converted!
 Not at all! I just didn't have Mayo fever until I went there.

The selectives the school offers are so attractive to me! Having a break after 6-7 weeks of anatomy to unwind and shadow/travel would be great.

I was discussing this issue with someone who interviewed at Mayo recently. We thought that Mayo was a really good "value-added" school. It takes a lot of students from no-name or state schools, with lower-than-average (for top 25 schools) but still respectable MCATs, many of whom have Mayo as one of their first interviews even in late October..., and molds them into top students, instills in them (brainwash?) the patient-first philosophy. The result is a step 1 average in the 240s and a ridiculously good match list that rivals schools in the top 10. My premed advisor also said that all the Mayo students she encountered on the residency interview trail were exceptionally and uniformly impressive.

That said, the value of the "value-added" idea diminishes with students who would otherwise get into higher ranked schools. Diminishing returns because you max out on the value.

This meaning that Mayo is a fantastic school, but it's level of fantasticness depends on where you start out before med school.

Good theory, but I hope they take some students from "prestigious" schools too! I'm from one of those institutions and Mayo is among my first choice!

I haven't gotten an interview invite from Mayo, but otherwise your description of the interviewees describes me pretty well, so maybe I have a shot! Mayo would be my second interview if I were to receive an invite there. One of my top choices.

I have to disagree. The people interviewing late october may not stand the highest chance of getting in. The group I interviewed with was among the group that got the first interview invites sent. Mainly all 33+ applicants. One girl just graduated from the UPenn law school, others had all done AMAZING things. When looking at the stats you have to figure that Mayo has very small class meaning the median and mean are less useful. A 33 MCAT can be otherwise a 34-35 if outliers like an applicant accepted with a 28-30 is removed (which some applicants are accepted with). The group I interviewed with had invites from Pritzker, UCSF, Yale and Harvard all lined up. I surmise later in the cycle these students are not as prevalent. Why? Because students of such caliber usually get their things in early especially for one of the most remarkable rolling schools in the nation. This entering class may be off the beaten path in regards of MCAT/GPA and even ivy league representation. I think this will be due to the fact that Mayo is now included in the USNews rankings. Although they are not ranked in the top twenty or top ten. It gives them publicity and strong applicants not in the know can check them out. All one has to do is watch that Mayo video they showed us at our interview day to catch Mayo fever and come running to cold Rochester. There is no place like Mayo.

I do not believe that Mayo's greatness is dependent on how great you are initially. No matter where you are in terms of "fantastic-ness" you will be a better person coming out of Mayo. Not many schools can say that. It is an environment that only Mayo produces.

Some other schools with unique environments: Pritzker, Yale and Stanford.

I take it you are going to keep your seat? :meanie:

Its really Baylor (girlfriend) vs. Mayo. We see how the fin aid works out. But I am leaning pretty hard on Mayo. Perhaps an acceptance for UTSW will make things a little more complicated. Mayo is really an opportunity I cannot pass up though

Hi there everyone,

First off, let me say that I wish everyone the best of luck with their pending applications at Mayo. I know many of us have our hearts set on spending the next 4 years in Rochester, MN.

Secondly, I'm wondering if there are any other folks out there who have submitted their applications later on in the cycle...by 'later on' I mean sometime during the month of October. I was busy wrapping-up with grad school until June...at which time I then began studying for the MCAT, ramping up volunteer hours, and preparing my primary application. Since this process took a while, it ended up that I wasn't able to submit my application until a few days before the deadline. My primary is still awaiting verification and I'm left wondering if there is any hope that I might stand a chance at an interview.

Just curious if anyone else is in the same boat and might have more information on how Mayo handles applications that are submitted late in the cycle. My hope is that they are still reviewed and not automatically tossed out because interview slots have already been filled.

Again, best wishes to everyone. Also, I am a Minnesota native, so if anyone has concerns/questions about the harsh winters, the Twin Cities, etc. feel free to ask & I am happy to answer.

Hey, I think from what we know there are very few spots left for interview. I think they are going to send out the last few spots this week and next. I think chances are slim...but probably not nonexistent. Have you received request for Rec letters yet?

Does anybody know where to find the stats for total applicants accepted to medical schools?

I always view the total class size but more people have to be getting accepted, but where can this data be found?

Is there any chance that their next round of decisions will come right after the 7th? (I only ask cause i'm interviewing then, lol)

USNews has the total number for MD and MD/PhD, not just MD. The total acceptances for MD are around 60-70, depending on the year. It's not many.

If in the end you turn down your spot, make sure you earmark it for Raltima07 from SDN. They'll know who I am.

😉

Ranked🙁 I'm scared! Please mayo! I'll never eat ketchup again!

Sadly, I'm still waiting for AMCAS to verify my primary. This means that Mayo hasn't even *seen* my application yet 🙁

My primary was submitted 3 weeks ago, so it could take up to 3 more weeks before it is even verified...at which point we're awful close to the mid-December deadline of when interviews stop at Mayo.

If it wasn't for having to finish up a very demanding grad school program in May, I could have gotten this application in earlier. Bummer. 🙁

and on hold. Can't say I wasn't expecting it but I'm disappointed nonetheless.

Oh Hold as well...I was expecting it but it feels worse to see the e-mail. Are they rejecting right now? Or is the worst that could of happened post-interview?

On hold, too. I was expecting it but I'm still sad

Still waiting on an interview.

If I am not granted an interview will I receive a rejection email?

I still hope they are sending out interview invites!

On hold. I'm SOOOO relieved I wasn't accepted! I would have been tempted to attend this terrible, unhappy school.

i hate that the ranked e-mail starts with "Congratulations!..."

well, here's to waiting another 2 weeks :poke:

Ranked today. Interviewed about 2 weeks ago. So this means I'll be considered at the next adcom meeting (probably in a few weeks)?

Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk

In 2 weeks.

No one who has interviewed is rejected until the end of the cycle. We stay on the hold list.

Yes. If you are not granted an interview, you will get a rejection email. There should be one last batch of invites, according to wisco.

Likelihood of calls going out Today? Or tomorrow? Every time I get on here I worry that calls went out and I missed it again haha

I never post on SDN until today. I just got the call from Gina today. The best unknown phone call I have ever received. Thought I let you guys know that a spot has been taken. Sorry 🙁

~~MMS Class of 2016~~

Congrats on the acceptance! No need to say sorry, go celebrate! Hopefully we'll be celebrating too.

Congrats future classmate! 👍

I just spoke with Gina, and it may be two or three more weeks until all the interview requests are made.

Hey all,
I've created a facebook group for accepted students (helpful for communication). Please send me a message with your name if you'd like an invite to join!

2 to 3 weeks? So that takes us to near the end of november, that's pretty short notice for an interview.

Is it safe to assume that the second round of acceptances went out this afternoon? I saw one SDN'r say he/she got the call, but haven't seen any more about it... Anyone know anything from the admissions office?

Yea I'm a bit confused about this as well. Where are all the sdners??
