I always wondered if that's how UAB drew such a large OOS student population for a state school.

I think the reason UAB attracts OOS students is because it's so well known. It has a lot more opportunities for research and in many other areas. They don't seem to accept many OOSers at all though, and less than 25 have matriculated each year. I'm from Arkansas, and I think my state school has more than that.

Dr. smith is not the dean anymore right? I heard fewer acceptance has been offered this year due to leadership transitions in med school
is the committee still meeting at the end of every month ? so will they just send out a mass email after the last interview session? ugh the wait...🙁

Are there any instate reapplicants (and non-early decision) that have gotten interviews?

Also, does anyone know how UAB handles reapplicants; in other words are they treated like a 1st timer, do they have later interviews, etc? Please, no speculation.

BTW, I have read the material UAB gives online for reapplicants. I did not find it to reveal anything new.

Same boat. Not sure at all what is going on.

Arkpremed, did you interview in December?

Accepted MSTP last week, really loved the program when i interviewed in December and was very impressed with both the research and clinical opportunities at UAB. Everyone in the program was very nice and and had pretty much nothing bad to say that I can remember. UAB was the most accommodating and friendly MD/PhD interview experience I had, but the horror story written about by draizetrain above seems terrible, though I honestly cant imagine that's a universal experience. Really looking forward to coming back for the 2nd visit later this spring to check out Birmingham and UAB again

Have you checked the 2010-2011 thread? The reapplicants who posted got interview invites in February. Here's the link: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=728313&highlight=alabama&page=5

Edit: Scroll to nearly the bottom of the page to see the pertinent stuff.

Yes I've read it. Still doesn't explain why they handle it this way. Very different. However, choices are theirs. Not worried, if I get an invite I get an invite, if I don't...oh well.

No, I interviewed at the end of September and was accepted at the end of October. I was lucky to hear so early. Hoping for the best for all of you still waiting!

I too am an instate reapplicant that hasn't been interviewed yet. I remember being told in my post interview session (many moons ago...) that reapps aren't considered until later in the cycle to give us additional time to improve. I wouldn't have thought it'd be this much later though.. It is reassuring that yall haven't heard anything either though!

from my interview at USA I heard that UAB does all reapplicant interviews at the very last session, apparently the dude asked the admission and thats what he was told... dont take my word on this lol

I interviewed in early December... I check my e-mail compulsively for any updates. Will all of you please post your GPAs & MCATs, and application statuses? I think that will give everyone else a good idea of where they stand. Also, do you guys think that if you're not accepted fairly quickly after your interview that you're doomed to wait until late March/early April to be waitlisted?

I posted this earlier, but I have a 38Q and a 3.25 from a reputable school. I didn't submit my secondary until early November.

Secondary submitted August, interview September, haven't heard back. Status is campus choices received, mcat >32, gpa >3.8. No I do not believe you are doomed to be waitlisted if not accepted quickly, for several reasons. I know quite a few IS applicants, and none that I personally know have been accepted. I think acceptances are down from previous years at this point, for whatever reason. Like I said earlier, my premed advisor has said that they are behind in invites and acceptances this year. Administration changes may be one of the reasons. Also, several UAB med students have said that about half their class was accepted in the last wave. However I'm merely an applicant, not an adcom member, so who knows. But applications are considered holistically, so everyone has a chance. Your quick interview invite likely means they are pretty interested in you. Just try to relax and wait, although I know it's easier said than done.

Submitted my secondary on Nov 1st. Got an interview invite on Nov 8th. Interviewed Dec 8th. MCAT: 33, GPA 3.65. In-state. Status is still "Campus Choices Received" I have only heard of one person I know who has been accepted so far.

I got an interview invite on 10/19 for a 10/27 interview. I was accepted a few weeks later on 11/18. My GPA/MCAT are nothing special.

It seems like the recurring answer is that you're either hear back quickly (within a month), in March after all the interviews are complete, or in April when the waitlist is formed. The med students that pop in from time to time keep saying that most of the class comes from the waitlist. But I have absolutely no inside knowledge, so take that for what it's worth. Good luck. :luck:

I am an instate reapplicant, and I just received an interview invite! Maybe the AdCom saw my post yesterday and remembered they'd forgotten about us. That's what I like to think anyways!

Congratulations!!!

I'm also a reapplicant, but I did not get a interview invite today. Only posting this to make others feel better. Hopefully another round of interviews will be given out in a week or two.

So I know it's a super stressful wait (trust, me I remember it vividly), but it doesn't matter how many ways you ask the question. You either get right after your interview (1-3ish wks), near the end of the interview season (Marchish), or you get put on the waitlist.

As for the proportions of the class that get in around March vs. off the waitlist, it varies year to year depending on how many people accept. My year (MS1), they got through some of the middle third (any reapplicants feel free to correct that). But the current MS3s (I'm pretty sure it's the MS3s, but might be the 4s), a few people got in from the bottom third. So it varies from year to year.

I know USMLE Step 1 scores shouldn't be a huge factor in considering a school, but can any medical students speak to the preparedness of UAB students for Step 1? How much time is given to study, averages, etc.?

Thanks!

I am in an interesting situation here. I never submitted a secondary last year, so would I still be considered a re-applicant? Also, I scored a 26 and received an interview invite (IS). I am excited, but understand that the odds are certainly against me. Is this a case where if I knock my interview out of the park, then I'll get put on a waitlist or is this a courtesy interview? TIA

Yes, if you submitted your AMCAS to any schools you are considered a re-applicant. Although I'm not sure how much bearing that holds on whether you get in or not. If they invited you, they are interested; I definitely don't think they offer courtesy interviews. Good luck!

I don't think re-applicant bears much significance, other than your ability to have a good answer to the "What have you done to improve your application over the past year" question. Thanks for your kind words though, I just saw that 27 was their 10th percentile acceptance score, but I suppose someone has to take the spot of the 5-7 percentiles! Heck, maybe even a few 25's get accepted, right? Optimism is the key!

Apparently people that interviewed today were told that they might hear back tomorrow. Hopefully that means that some of us might hear back as well. Would make sense to me, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

they say that to everyone... only those well qualified are offered acceptance/decision the day after the interview. for the rest of us peons... i think we have to wait until match when waitlist come out i think:shrug:

Didn't say anything specific on my day, but you're probably right. Would like to think I'm a well qualified candidate based on other interviews and acceptances, but can't base my expectations on other schools, I know. Although I would like to ha. Another month doesn't really matter anyway after this long. I would hope we aren't doomed to the waitlist, I know a lot of people that haven't heard back that I thought would easily be accepted. Just my opinion though. I'm sure there will be a final larger wave of acceptances before the waitlist. Just grasping for hope lol.

how do we know when uab have their interviews?

They interview on most Thursdays, and I knew some people that interviewed today.

man I feel like a ton of us are currently waiting. I really hope some of us hear tomorrow.

I did find out last night that there seemed to be a lot of OOS people there yesterday. That may have been the reason for saying they should hear today. Still got my fingers crossed for the rest of us tho :xf:

I got in today! This just goes to show that, even if you don't get in immediately (1-3 weeks), you're not doomed to wait until March to hear anything! I interviewed in December! Good luck everyone!

can accepted people post their stats? i thought uab/usa give out acceptance on the 1st and 15th of every month... is uab lowering the admission line/thereshold every week now?

Congrats to all those accepted! Looks like I may be waiting to the end

how effective are post interview updates? I am withdrawing from a non-medicine related class (boring/useless as heck too) so I could use the extra time for more volunteering and shadowing opportunities. I do plan on updating the school through email but will it have any effect or is my fate already sealed?

I think an update letter at this point is probably not going to make any difference. Especially since it's only about dropping a class. You could do more shadowing and such but there is only about a month and a half before the waitlist comes out. But if you want to send a letter go ahead. Doubt it would hurt you.

Does anyone know for sure when the last interview day is this year?
