mine came literally 1 hour after frezz's, so they could be sendng them out slowly. dont lose hope!

Congrats fellow wait-listees!

As to all the questions regarding Wednesday notifications, and handing out acceptances after wait-listing applicants- anyone else think the UMass admissions committee reads this thread and changes their accpetance/waitlist style just to throw us off? 😉 haha

Wait listed today too! I think they said that about half the class comes off the wait list, staying hopeful.

Ok, so anyone have any idea if it's positive to not be waitlisted yet? I interviewed back in October and have heard nothing. I assume if they wanted to reject me they have had ample opportunity, so maybe there is still a shot at acceptance. Or am I just deluding myself with positive thinking.

Any March interviewees hear back yet? I interviewed 3/22 and they said "you should hear back by early April." It's no longer "early" April and I have yet to hear anything either way.

I interviewed in March and still haven't heard back. It's only been a little over a month and I can't wait to hear back from them, so I can't imagine the others having waited so long. Congrats to those who have gotten in.

Probably deluding. In the past, they've sent out two rounds of waitlist e-mails and then sent out the mass rejections the next week.

I know that approximately half of the current UMass class came off of the wait list last year, but does anyone have a fairly reliable estimation of how many candidates are historically put on the wait list?

On last year's thread, someone said that it's been approximated on SDN that there are between 100-150 people wait-listed, meaning you probably have between 30%-50% chance of getting off the wait-list. I'm not sure who came up the that approximation, though.

This information may be a little old (MSAR 2010-2011), but could be useful for figuring out the WL numbers:

Total applications: 814
Interviewed: 460
Matriculated: 114

From UMass' website:

http://www.umassmed.edu/Content.aspx?id=98592&linkidentifier=id&itemid=98592

Profile for entering class of 2011:
Completed applications: 807
Applicants interviewed: 552
Matriculated students: 125 (includes 5 non-resident MD/PhD)

**At my interview, Dr. Paraskos said about 1,000 apply and about 500 are interviewed. Looks like he did some rounding.

So, it looks like about 57 to 62 people get off the WL.

So, # interviewed - # acceptances (I'm using the # matriculated) = number of people waitlisted and rejected

552 - 125 = 427.

At least we know the # WL cannot be MORE than 427, because some of those people are rejected. But let's use this as a worst-case scenario (no one is outright rejected)... 57 WL / 427 = 13% come off the WL.

At the very least, our chances of getting off the WL are greater than 13%.

If someone has a better idea of how many are outright rejected vs. WL, we might get closer to solving the unknown # WL.

I haven't done math for awhile so I hope this makes sense / is correct.

You did that math right, but your answer seems a little more grim than I had anticipated, realizing of course that that is a worst case scenario.Since we KNOW people do get rejected (and not everyone is waitlisted) we do know that the numbers are a little better than that.

Using MDapplicants.com as a proxy (a REALLY bad proxy with a low n-value), in the past 2 years, 57 people have reported applying, 30 of those have reported getting an interview, and 11 of those have reported getting accepted. If we extrapolate this as being reflective of the whole applicant pool, than I *suppose* one could argue that approx. 30% will get accepted from a wait-list. Using your value of 13% and comparing that to 30%, I guess we could argue that approx 50% of interviewees get rejected while 50% wait-listed.

Accepted yesterday after 3 full days on the wait list, haha there's no making sense of this process. Good luck to everyone else still waiting, hang in there!!!

Grats, ChrisPaul--looks like we have eerily similar stats/interviews/acceptances on MDApps, haha.

Last Friday constituted the second round of waitlist e-mails, right? Basically what I want to know is if the WL is going to get bigger or if things are going to start moving as we head toward May 15th and beyond...

BTW everyone I talked to someone who was rejected post-interview about 2 weeks after her interview (back in December), so post-interview rejections have gone out before this week.

But those notices were probably sparse and scattered, just like acceptances earlier in the cycle.

...to be fair there had to have been 120 acceptances throughout the cycle for the class to be full--so while it was definitely scattered across many months, i guess i wouldn't call it sparse? but i also would say that very few people seem to post one way or the other (obviously with a leaning toward posting acceptances).

thanks for sharing aker.

also alpine, i dont *think* anymore waitlists to come, then again everything i think seems to be wrong lol

I'm hoping that if there were no more waitlists to come, they would have just sent everyone still waiting to hear their rejection e-mails today. I'm still waiting to hear anything, interviewed on 11/9, sent a letter of intent a few weeks ago after the first round of waitlists went out...

True, it's probably way more likely that people with rejections don't rush to post that information.

Totally valid point and I have no explanation for that except a) there are more wait-lists coming out b) maybe you'll be straight up accepted c) the process sucks. I'm still waiting for a pre-interview rejection from Einstein even though I'm sure all interviews have ended.....

haha choice c definitely says it all. Sorry about Einstein, it really is so frustrating to spend time (and money!) on an application and wonder what the heck is going on at the other end... Congratulations on your waitlist at UMass, hope you get good news soon!

Complete 9/23, invited 2/6 to interview 3/22, rejected 4/24. I think I was high on the hitlist, though -- my first interviewer badgered me for 25 minutes in an attempt to refute my very existence.

Best of luck to everyone still hoping for good news!

I hope I'm wrong, but I doubt they would have outright acceptances left since they've already accepted some people off of waitlist.

If this is true, it puts the "high priority waitlist" theory to rest.

I still haven't heard a peep since my interview in December. No rejection, no wait list, no acceptance yet. And based on what has been going on the last few weeks it seems like anyone's guess as to what I will get. If I get any contact all all, that is.

I think the high priority waitlist theory was put to rest when ChrisPaul got in yesterday after 3 days of being on the second round of waitlists, no? ohh...so much speculation!

Yes, yes! I just hope we are all on a level playing field now as far as the WL is concerned. Of course there are demographics to consider, which is beyond our control.

Rest assured they HAVE to tell you something on May 15th at the absolute latest.

Hi,

I was just wondering if any of you would attend Tufts or Bu over Umass. I would like to remain in the northeastern half of the United States for residency after i complete med school. so is Umass generally considered just as good as Tufts and BU or is it worth paying a lot more money to go to either one of those schools. thanks.

Some people do just that.

Keep in mind that UMass is neck and neck with Tufts in the rankings but costs about 1/3 as much to attend.

BU has more research opportunities, but if you want to be clinical, the only reason to go to BU beyond location is its urban underserved population. But it's up to you to decide whether that's worth $40,000/year.

The residency director scores are slightly lower for Umass than the other two (according to US News), though its been argued those aren't very accurate because they have a small sample size, etc. I think definitely in New England and the northeastern half Umass if well respected. Its a relatively new school (as far as med schools go) and it has such a tight residency requirement, allowing no out of state MD (only) applicants, that I think this tends to hurt its name recognition in areas outside of the northeast. There have been a lot of discussions about people choosing between Umass and Tufts and/or BU and people have chosen all three for whatever reason and most people have been happy. Is a potentially lower residency director score/name brand worth hundreds of thousands of dollars? Thats your choice to make. I have spoken with a Umass alum who said she would not choose Tufts over Umass but in hindsight would maybe choose BU. That's an n-value of 1 however. If you have the choice between all three of these schools, I think you have to determine what your goals and needs are. Take a look at the match lists too, which are very respectable for each of these schools and make your own comparisons.

Hi

thank you very much for the responses. i was looking at the class profiles from last year incoming classes form BU, Tufts, and Umass and it appears Umass medical school is one the least diverse med schools in the country. Last year they only had 1 income hispanic person, and 2 black people. Does any one know if Umass medical school's classes usually have close to no minority students?

Remember that they're only recruiting from within Massachusetts, which has, well, not that many black people.

Is racial diversity an important issue for you?

Silverman, on one post on this Umass thread you said you applied to multiple med schools already with a 24, and on another post on the UChicago thread you said you plan on applying and have a 35...

And claimed a 26 and a 32 this year in other threads as well.

The total matriculated student body in the MD or MD/PhD program has a black/Hispanic population around 7-8% according to AAMC (i.e., ~10 students per class). Admittedly, that's a bit lower than MA's overall black/Hispanic population (I think it's somewhere around 12% or so), but it's not *that* far out of whack. Last year's class may have just been an anomaly.

I was also interested in the Umass diversity issues. I was also surprised by the lack of hispanic/latino incoming students. I know Umass tries have there incoming class be close to the demographic of the states, but hispanic people make up a little more than 10% of the population. Umass has also start programs targeting latino and portuguese/brazilian students.

Does anyone know if Umass classes are always this "white".

I am going to be a reapplicant this spring and wanted to know if what i heard was true that reapplicants don't get interviews until later winter? I got an interview last time I applied but have greatly increased my mcat, research, and volunteering. this is my number one choice so i was hoping to get everything in early and maybe get accepted early in the process. thanks.

So is it fair to assume that only rejections are left to come?

Now I'm not one much for conspiracies, but I called silverman out on this score discrepancy back on page 6. When these concerns were resurfaced here against silverman, a brand new account created today with no other posts chimes in to echo these concerns. This seems far from coincidental. Why is someone trying to paint UMass in a bad light because of diversity?
