I recently started an acceptance thread for the 2016 class. If you are an accepted applicant, then feel free to join in discussion.

There already is a group started by current MS 1's. They get an updated list of accepted applicants everyone few weeks or so and will send you an invite to the group..

My bad...thought you wrote Facebook group... A sign I need more coffee...

Thanks topherP. If I would've known about the Facebook group, then I wouldn't have even bothered with a thread on here.

Has anyone received a merit scholarship from UMiami? If so, did you receive it with your acceptance?

Are applicants commonly waitlisted, or does Miami generally accept/reject?
Also, how likely is it to come off Miami's waitlist?

The way the Dean explained it at the interview made it sound as though everyone who is granted an interview is either accepted or placed on the waitlist. I'm not 100% certain on that though....

Pre-interview rejection last week. Would've liked an excuse to go to Miami for a couple days... :-(

I interviewed in October and was waitlisted. Today I got emails for "Second Look Day"- do waitlisted candidates get invited for this as well?????

Does anyone who interviewed on March 30th know when we are supposed to hear back? Did the dean or anyone give any indication?

I am on cloud nine because I got accepted off the waitlist!!! I can't stop smiling and can't believe I'm moving to Miami!!!! SO EXCITED!

Did anyone get the call today. I've been sick to my stomach, literally, and am beginning to feel incredibly depressed now. I interviewed on March 26th and thought the committee met every two weeks. I'm assuming the wait-list email will be coming my way tomorrow morning and I don't think there are great chances of getting off it for late interviewees like myself.

I wanted Miami too. Oh well, no one else has wanted me either this year

Finally accepted!!! (off waitlist) Just got the call from Dr. Weisman.

ahhh now its making me nervous. i got interview 3/30 and have not heard anything and already people are getting taken off the waitlist 🙁 sounds like bad news for me...

Interviewed on 03/26/2012. I wasn't home, so my parents took the message and I will call the office of admissions tomorrow as directed. I also received an acceptance email. Good luck to the rest of you.

Okay, so I just got accepted to the U after previously having my mind set on attending the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. Carver is ranked way higher than Miami in both research and primary medicine (see US News). I suspect there is a reason for it but it was not obvious to me during the interviews. Can anyone chime in on what the pros and cons are for attending/not attending the two schools? One respected dermatologist I met thought I should pick Carver - but his disclaimer was that he went to Carver, and knew nothing of U of Miami. Please limit your responses to the quality of the program, curriculum, Step 1, etc (I already know Miami/South Beach makes Iowa City look like Newt Gingrich's 'moon colony'...)...Anyway...HELP!

I'm thinking Iowa.

Medical school acceptance : difficult :: preferred residency : ___________

I think the biggest difference is really Iowa vs. Miami (and how important this is to you.) Personally, I'm turning down an acceptance at UNC (a much cheaper and higher ranked school) because I know I'll be much happier spending 4 years in Miami than in Chapel Hill.

Got accepted yesterday!!! Interviewed 12/5, wait listed 1/14. I'm so thrilled, this is my second time applying to Med school because nobody accepted me last year, and UM has been my top choice the whole time. See you soon, c/o 2016!!!

GPA 3.57, mcat 32q

Congrats😀

It's encouraging to me as an waitlister that people are already getting off before the May 15th; this school blew my mind on interview day and I want in!!!!!!

Does anyone happen to know if the deadline to decide for MD/MPH program was on April 15th instead of May 15th since MPH classes start late June so the movement for the MD/MPH side would be heavy now?

So who got the call today? I didn't... Today was the last adcom meeting, right? This is the worst feeling ever 🙁

Has anyone still not heard anything post-interview? Should we assume a rejection letter is in the mail at this point if we haven't received a call or wait-list email? I'm too scared to call and ask, and I doubt they would tell me either way.

Consider me completely ignorant on the matter: Do I have to fill out any forms/paperwork to potentially receive a merit scholarship from UM (other than fafsa)?

Ouch, another Wednesday and dead silence. I hate to ask again, because I'm pretty sure everyone has heard at this point, but am I the only one who sits by the phone every Wednesday to hear absolutely nothing. I wonder if I will be getting the waitlist email tomorrow morning? Maybe a rejection letter? Time to prepare for next cycle or something else I guess.....

Good luck to everyone else with medical school and your careers.

I just got the call this morning when I was in the parking lot heading in to work. I'm stunned. I completely thought I was going to have to reapply next year. I had started studying for the MCAT again, and was making plans to move to another state for a different job, and... Anyway, I've just been walking around work not really doing anything, it hasn't really set in yet. I submitted on the last day to submit and interviewed on the last day to interview, so it's fitting that this is the only place I didn't get placed on the alternate list for. Direct OOS acceptance by the way.

That is awesome!! Congrats.

Interviewed on 26 March and haven't heard anything. I called last week and was told the meeting was pushed to April 25 and I would hear something on April 26(today). So I called a few minutes ago and was told:

"the committee has made a decision. you will hear something as early as tomorrow or next week."

i asked if she could tell me over the phone and she said no. i let her know that there were several life decisions: moving, quitting my current job, planning a wedding, etc that hinged on the acceptance or rejection. she sympathized and said she'd put a note in my file.

any insight into what this means? i haven't been rejected, so i still got a chance. however, i can make arguments for them letting acceptances go out first.

I interviewed 3/30 and haven't heard anything either. I called today as well and was told I would receive an email from them early next week. I am thinking waitlist one because of the earlier acceptance posted today from someone in my interview day and two because she said email and it seems the good news comes by phone lol. Hope you hear some good news tho!

Congrats. I interviewed on March 26 and was accepted on April 17. Like you, it was my first and only acceptance out of 8 interviews. I have a ton of waitlists. Be sure to request the facebook group. It is essential. It will have housing information and a google document for roomates. If you are a guy, you will be happy that our female classmates are flat out hot and not just "med school hot." South Beach, here I come!

Hey everyone, congrats on your acceptances.

I am a rising 4th year at UMMSM and I have an opening in my apartment. I am looking for a roommate. I live in a building named Seybold Pointe, which is only 7 minutes from campus by foot. It is a 2/2 and I have enjoyed living here for the past 3 years. The apartment is fully furnished and is on the 9th floor. There is a washer/dryer in the unit and a full kitchen. The rent would be 825.00 a month plus utilities (electricity and internet). There is a beautiful balcony view of downtown Miami. There is a covered parking space included with the rent and there is always a security guard in the lobby. Please contact me if you are interested.

"sadly, the distractions are in place where the public can duke it out with big pictures. the truth is that it isn't the insurance, the government, the economy, etc that is causing this. Yes, those are real problems but with proper management, the u could have been poised to cope. The trouble is that even when the economy went sour, the u said "we are invincible and will continue to grow". they grew their departments, bought a hospital, and implemented a disastrous emr system at a grand scale. first, they grew their departments with ridiculous and unsustainable recruitment packages (including a $100m chair package to the recently removed chair of medicine). these packages were not spent at a pace garnering a return, but were spent at will and without reason. they wooed and recruited young rising stars away from solid and secure futures with packages that were rich and promising. they showed them beautiful labs and told them they could have space like this too. the truth is when the recruits showed up for work, they often had to wait upwards of 6 months for space and then it was barely useable. now they are being told that no research packages are being honored. potentially, they are submarining careers which in a reasonable economy, might have been salvageable. but not likely any more. then they bought a hospital that went into direct competition with jmh. employees at every level were told to recruit patients for this hospital. and they bought a multi-million dollar emr system that would take 10 years to implement fully (as if technology will really be the same in 10 years) and implemented it in ALL departments immediately. they didn't apply it to 2-3 depts to transition sensibly. No, the entire campus went online immediately. Along with this, billing became centralized, which put everyone in the dark. A month ago, there was no way they could really state what the revenue and loss was because there hadn't been a real report yet - for even the first quarter of this now ending fiscal year. And worse, no single department can measure their performance because the entire system is a black box. How does one even address that?much like the mortgage bubble in miami led folks to think life really was great - until it wasn't - the u wants to blame everyone else for their bad decisions. They should have hunkered down, managed and conserved, and protected their valued assets. you don't take a bloated mortgage just because you can. and you shouldn't gamble your personnel assets on a future that isn't supportable. the u knew what it was doing but didn't care. they don't even know who these people are they are laying off. the dean's area is in high security when he should be walking campus and talking to the folks that make it the u.
