Well there it is....🙁

Hey guys, I'm a current med student at Penn, and would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the school or application process/interview at Penn. Feel free to PM me as well.

Me too 🙁. Oh well. Best Wishes to you with all other applications!

So that's it? We're done?

So that's it? We're done?

I don't think so...there were a couple of people that got interviews last year very late in the process. Chances seem slim though.

My status hasn't changed yet...perhaps they haven't reviewed my application yet.

Sorry to hear. 🙁 How did you find this out? I kinda figured I would fall into this category, but my status page still says I'm in the screening process.

EDIT: Nvm. Did some digging back thru the thread.

It was a long shot anyway

For those who received the "not invited you for an interview at this time" status, did you get an email notifying you that your status was changed?

For this of u who got this status update, when were you all complete?

Does Penn only give out those deferred statuses today? Are we in the clear if we haven't received that? I was looking back at the old thread but I didn't see anything.

Just interviewed here. Amazing people and curriculum. Definitely my top choice. I don't think even Harvard will change that (if I ever get an interview there).

Those of us who were complete in July/August got this update right around the 15th plus a week or so. People who were complete later I assume are still in review.

Good Luck to everyone!

I was complete at the end of July, but my status has not changed from the original "in review/screening;" any theories? Am I still in it?

If I had to guess, this means you are probably still in it and that they have a few interview spots left to give. They are probably comparing you and a few others to those who applied late. Complete speculation though.

Can anyone shed some light on how decisions are made at Penn? I get that nothing is released until March, but when does the Adcom meet? And how heavily are the interviews weighed against the rest of our files? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

Does everyone here who is complete and has not got an interview invite yet have this as their status ? I am wondering if this status eventually results in rejection or applicants with such status have actually got an interview invite later in the cycle ?

Based on past posts, most of us with this message will be rejected.

I'm glad to hear you liked it! I didn't think I'd like Penn but after interviewing it was my top choice as well.

Last year I met three people deciding between Penn and Harvard (accepted to both) and two went to Penn. In my opinion, it comes down to where you feel "the fit" at that point and the amount of money you are awarded.

Interview Invite today! I was complete 9/24 and the available dates they had were 12/15, 12/16, and 1/4 and I picked 12/15.

Did you guys have a change in status on 11/15 or no?

I have an interview at Penn next week. For the people who interviewed already, what are some good hotel choices to look at? I've never been to Pennsylvania so any help would be appreciated!

Why does Penn keep sending me copies of their curriculum? I've received two in the last three days. I'm fully aware of their curriculum already and would like an interview invitation instead 😀. Is it a sarcastic thing? "The essay you wrote regarding our curriculum was so off base, we decided to send you a copy so that you can better familiarize yourself with it"? I've twice steeled myself for the bad news after seeing the thin envelope, and twice my disappointment has been delayed.

Club quarters. 17th and chestnut.

Any chance you can stay with students? I highly recommend it - it's one of the ways I learned a lot of about Penn kids and their life outside of school. I know it might not seem important, but it ended up being my #1 reason for choosing Penn.

I did that as well, for me it was the fit. Neither school gave me monies 👎

Looking back, what makes me the happiest at Penn is the fit - for sure. You're going to have an amazing education no matter where you go for med school (esp. if you are choosing between top schools)

Penn's students are pretty involved with the admissions process as far as interviewing, abassadoring etc. goes... but even we are in the dark about how the Adcom works. All I can say is they don't just meet in March (and I'm pretty sure this is true of all non-rolling med schools). As far as weighting - that's definitely unknown (anyone who tells you different is probably lying). The tag line we hear is "the interview is very important - including the student interview." Does that mean it's 50-50 ? Dunno. I know it seems easy for me to say - but don't worry about the weights. You aren't going to find out, and you'll probably end up driving yourself crazy trying to figure it out. If people were able to figure it out, they'd definitely be gaming the system... and I don't think that happens...

The best you can do is put your best foot forward (which I'm sure you all are).

Good luck!

I made a boo boo. In my thank you letter I might or might not have referred to Phildelphia as Pittsburgh. I just got confused (allnighter for exams, etc etc took away all my brain power).

Question: I KNOW that UPenn is my TOP CHOICE (by far) will this tiny mistake have a significant effect? Obviously it's hard to know definitely, but what does everyone think?

I made the same mistake for a school in another state. Still got accepted 🙂. I don't think it'll matter too much.

Who was the thank you to? 9 times out of 10 interviewers barely read them, and might not notice. If it is picked up on, I can't imagine it changing things much. However, it's certainly not a GOOD thing. We already have a complex that we're not in Pittsburgh, and not Penn State in Happy Valley (and not home of a current sex scandal).

Keeping in mind that I can only speak for myself:
I read thank you letters, but considering recommendations are due before I receive them, they definitely don't affect what I write. And even if I did, I know that people are busy and make minor mistakes. It's better than you telling UPenn that you love Harvard or telling five different schools that they're your top choice (I've heard some horror stories about that).

Let's just say that it's possible to have acceptances withdrawn by schools whose admissions people talk to each other. And some of those top schools do talk to each other.

What can I do as an applicant to get penn to review my app favorably?

I sent in my application on the last possible date they would consider applications, sometime in novemeber. On the status page it says the committee has reviewed my app but has not decided to extend an interview invite at this time. how should i interpret this?

also for those who have already interviewed, how impressive was the visit? also what did the financial aid folks discuss. I have heard from others that they are very generous in this regard.

Mine says that too..I took it as a deferred or a on hold sort of status. More pessimistically, I think, for me, it will be a future rejection though.

Sorry about the bad news, but the chances for an interview invite are almost none after that status update (unlike Pritzker which will still send a bunch in january). The reason is because Penn interviews a lot of students (800-1000) and they set up a two tiered waitlist around january.

As far as the visit, Penn was one of the most impressive visits I had. The overall atmosphere is very relaxed, upbeat and fun and the facilities are quiet impressive. And if you are into historical facts about the school you will have a field day (first medical school in the country!) The financial aid folks are very helpful as well.

Never lose hope though, one never knows!

BrainBuff (or any other Penn student):

I finished my apps for Penn sometime in August (3rd week maybe?)...and I have not gotten an II yet, nor the status update of death...So, I was just wondering how many interview slots were left, and if I had any chance left yet?

If you guys were complete in august and have not heard anything yet, that's good news. Any invitations left for january (and even february) will be sent out to your group. Penn has already gone through the applicants who were complete closed to the application deadline and some of them have already gotten invites. Your chances are definitely much better than those with the status update of death we have been talking about..,..

Apparently missing the wave of no-interview decisions in November doesn't guarantee safety. Status of death yesterday, complete 8/18.

I haven't gotten the "status of death" update yet, but nor have I received a "complete" email.

How long was it after submitting the secondary that people got an email saying their application was complete?
