Congrats to everyone accepted! I interviewed in early December, and was told not to expect a decision until end of January/beginning of February. However, I heard back from them the first week of January that I had been waitlisted. Anyone know if this is good or not? I'm afraid that they've just decided to place me at the bottom of the waitlist, and I should just not get my hopes up =/

I think they tell everyone to expect to hear later than what actually happens, so that people don't complain if they get behind. I interviewed at the beginning of November and was told to expect a decision in late Dec. but I heard back at the beginning of December. I think they put almost everyone (~80%) on the waitlist and it would be impossible to know whether you are at the top or bottom. The best thing to do if you want to attend the school is to keep sending them letters of interest. Good Luck!

Is there a rough estimate of when Pitt starts to admit students off their gigantic waitlist??

75% of applicants get sent to waitlist, and about 3/4 of them ends up getting accepted. The waitlist isn't ranked, so you're not at the bottom or at the top, just on the waitlist like most of us. They said they will re-evaluate everyone in March, but I heard that they are going to do it earlier since they ended interviews earlier this year.

I remember the 75% of interviewees are waitlisted number but out of curiosity where did you get the 3/4 of those are accepted (sounds great to me though).

I also interviewed early December. I haven't heard a thing though, kinda scares me waiting for (hopefully) the eventual "Keep on waiting." I view like February 13th as the end of life as I currently know it. It is painful thinking about an outright rejection. This whole thing has me stressed beyond belief, but in the end it's all worth it... I'd think. 😕

Either way, good luck!

I believe they said it right after they talked about the 75%/10%/15% breakdown. It does sound a little high, though...probably a general ballpark?
I'm just :xf:

I seriously doubt if they take 3/4 of the waitlist. It maybe that 3/4 of the class comes from the waitlist perhaps.

Yeah, I did some number crunching based off US News data and Pitt's reported percentages and it seems like 30-40% are accepted off the wait-list.

I'm sure there's no way to calculate it with publicly available data, but I would be curious about what percentage of the other 60-70% withdraw from the waitlist versus stay on it and never get accepted. It seems like (at least from SDN) there's a decent number of people who withdraw from the Pitt waitlist either immediately or at least in March when they hear back from non-rolling schools.

Maybe I'm just trying to convince myself that my chances are higher than 30-40%.

I just used these numbers (not taking into account some waitlistees withdrawing): 800-900 interviewed, around 10-15% accepted outright, about 70% wait-listed, around 10-15% rejected post interview. They accept around 400 in total.

Assuming 850 interviewed, 90 accepted outright leaves about 310 acceptances. Those 310 acceptances will go to the approximately 600 wait-listed. 310/600 = 52%.

That's higher than 30-40% but these numbers can go either way depending on what they decide to do. Obviously, I hope 30-40% is an underestimate.

Oh, I'm definitely not questioning your math. I think they said they were being pretty firm on only 800-850 interviews this year, which means a smaller waitlist and (hopefully) better odds. The number that I'd be really interested in is the percentage of applicants who never withdraw from the waitlist but are never accepted either, but I think that short of breaking into Beth Piraino's office, your analysis is pretty good.

I remember them saying that between 2/3 and 3/4 of the final class will be composed of individuals who were originally put on the waitlist.

I think 40% is a pretty fair estimate, given the numbers that we have. A lot of this depends on what their yield rates are for people who are outright accepted and then for people who are offered off the waitlist. I wish they had a more conventional acceptance policy

Saw the status update email, got scared/excited. Opened the website and got my first waitlist...... oh well just gotta stay positive🙄

waitlisted and staying optimistic. interviewed about 5 weeks ago

Yeah, from what I remember they said late Feb/early March they start pulling from the waitlist (oddly close to when they end interviewing! =P)

I am rather jealous of you folks that at least have a decision! My date was right around your(s) and even earlier...it's driving me insane. Although, anything other than a waitlist would be pretty surprising.

Oak Hill Apartments are hit or miss. I believe about half of the development is Section 8 housing, and there have been a few shootings, drug deals, vandalized cars, etc in that area. That said, I do know people who live up there and their apartment and surrounding area is very nice, so just be sure to tour YOUR APARTMENT before signing a lease.

I know quite a few med students living at Oak Hill Apartments and they seem to like it. These apartments are pretty new and nice compared to lot of the older buildings around Pittsburgh. Best part = <15 min walk to school. They are also pet-friendly...

Downside of Oak Hill Apts is that there are some inconsiderate, ghetto people who may end up being your neighbors. I would follow the above advice and check out the apartment (whether it's at oak hill or not) before signing. Some apartments in Pittsburgh can be a real miss.

Those who are waitlisted: hang in there! LOT of waitlisted applicants end up being accepted. :luck: Good luck!

apples, what's the life of a typical MS1 at pitt? Like what was your daily routine during your first year? Is it a whole lot different than undergrad?

Daughter is at the Darragh Apts. They are ideal as far as location is concerned. If one becomes avaiolable, I'd get it.

I'm not apples, but as an MS-2 I can shed some light on this. There's a ton of schedule variability between classes and between days so it's hard to say what an average day is. We start most classes at 8 or 9 depending on the block and have 7 half days a week devoted to whatever our main class is at the time, like cardio or anatomy. Those 7 half days will usually include ~4 (range 2-6) hours of PBL/workshop, and labs (lots of then in anatomy, fewer in other subjects), with the remainder being lecture. We're done by 4 or earlier most days, though some go to 5. Lecture and lab attendance is not mandatory, but PBL/workshop attendance is.

Of the remaining 3 half days, 1 will be clinical (medical interviewing, physical exam, H&Ps in the hospital), 1 will be whatever "minor" class you have going on (population health, medical ethics, research/stats, etc.), and 1 will be free. During 2nd year, usually you don't have a minor class so you have 2 free half days.

Did any other waitlisters get an email about financial aid today? I got excited when I saw it was from Pitt, which shortly turned into sadness haha.

I received it today. I think it is sent to everyone on the waitlist.

I know the financial aid email is helpful and probably innocuous, but reading through it I kept getting this undertone of, “If you don’t submit these forms, we’ll think you aren’t interested in us and you won’t be getting in.”

To those on the waitlist, hang in there! I'm an MS2 who interviewed on 9/28 and got in on 5/24 of the following year, so you can imagine how happy (and frustrated) I was when I finally got the good news. I sent in a bunch of updates/LOIs (emails) so I encourage all of you to do that as well.

Hey everyone,

Along the lines of this statement below, I think the Darragh Street Apts. are a great place to live. If anyone has been accepted and is on the waitlist for an apt. here, let me know. I am moving out of a 2 bdrm apt., and my roommate is looking for someone to move into my room. I love it here, but I am a bit spoiled and need more room to spread out. But if you love convenience, a 4 minute walk to school, a washer/dryer in unit, and all utilities included for $600 a month, let me know. Even if you read this and are on the waitlist, but get off in February or March and are interested, let me know.

Msg me for details. I don't come on here ever so that's the only way I will get notified.

Good luck everyone and hang in there! Trust me, it's worth the wait.

That is exactly how I felt reading it.

Upon getting the email I was quite nervous and was like "oh dear, if this is a status change I'm screwed." Then all I thought was "phew, just generic financial aid info."

Could any Pitt students remind me of a few things?

When does school start?
Approx how many hours of lecture are you in per week?
Are you given time off to study for Step 1?

Thanks in advance. I interviewed a while back and forgot some of these things...

Thanks in advance. I interviewed a while back and forgot some of these things...

1. School (i.e.) class starts around Aug 10-15, on a Monday. Count one week back further for first year orientation.
2. Lecture hours MS1 - pretty much block scheduled
a. Major science class - 6 half days/wk - 3-4 hr total time, 1-4 hours of that is lecture supplemented by things like PBL, TBL, workshop, lab. Lab component is greater for things like anatomy, micro.
b. 2 x minor class (e.g. biostats) - 2 hours/class/wk, can be all lecture of half lecture/half small group

c. Learn to be a doc (H&P classes) - 1-2 half days/wk, 2-4 hours

Summary: You can count on 1-2 free half days/wk. Other free half days pop up sporadically due to exam schedule.

3. Step 1 study time - 5 wks blocked for Step 1 study and execution + 4 wks of intergrated case studies (2 hr/day in small group, rest of day nearly free). MS3 starts May 1.

Check out schedules here:

I got in today as well-

I had emailed my interviewer (a really nice lady) that I got placed on the waitlist, but that i was still interested, who forwarded my email to the dean of admissions, who told me to submit a letter to [email protected], which I did.

pleasant surprise indeed good luck everyone still waiting :luck::luck:

Congrats! Thanks for the luck wished to those of us still chilling, and hoping. IDC if I find out may 31st, I just want an acceptance.

Oh, and did you already do the Fin. Aid. info?

nope, i started to do it, but then i got lazy half way through the "needaccess" form and decided to take a break (never resumed).

so apparently its not necessary to fill out that paperwork to show interest.

good luck again!

well, i wrote a letter and nope i am still on the waitlist...deep in the waitlist, i'm probably buried soooo deep in there...what a downer...

sigh it sucks when your love for a school is not reciprocated, i just feel like i got waitlisted again

Right there with ya buddy. Look at it this way, a waitlist is better than nothing (which is what I have otherwise haha). I'm thinking a gap year working construction is lookin' miiiiighty probable for me.
