Really? I haven't heard a damn thing since put on waitlist. How exactly have you been shown courteousy?

They won't get what they want from me. I won't drop now. I'm going somewhere else, but I'll hold their acceptance, if I get one, till May 15th. I'd advise everybody else to do the same to show Pitt how it feels to wait and wait and wait. Treat others how you would like to be treated.

Let it go man.. This process is way too taxing and drawn out to hold petty grudges... Go enjoy your awesome Penn acceptance!

did everyone on the waitlist fill a fafsa out for this school? i need to get on that...it feels weird to do though without an acceptance...

You should enter all the schools (up to 10) that you would consider attending on your FAFSA, regardless of whether you're on the waitlist or accepted. I submitted my FAFSA while on the waitlist.

They won't care. They take into account that most people will hold multiple acceptances until May 15, and their numbers are in limbo until then.

So what are they waiting for? Why do a few people get in early? How did you get in early? You have a 4.0 with a 43?

What are they doing this week? Last week? The last 8 months? It's just so titanically poorly handled.... It's actually kind of embarrassing for the school.

Oh well.... I guess I'm not as smart as those ADCOMs.

Lex, I'm not mad, I'm accepted to a better school. I just have seen how people here have really had their emotions played with for months, for no apparent reason. No other school goes this long and gives no indication what they are doing.

I just think it stinks and reflects badly on them as a school and as an ADCOM.

I'm done with this topic, already put in my two cents.

My numbers are in my MDApps.

Keep in mind that there is a world outside of SDN. Based on the posters here, it seems like only 20-ish people have been accepted, but the Second Look facebook group has over 40 members, this is just the people who are coming and who have found the group...the class could possibly be well over half full by now. I'm sure there will be more waves of acceptances since schools are supposed to accept up to their class size by March 30.

Congrats on your acceptance to Penn, it is a great school and I'm sure you will enjoy it.

I think if there's anything one should learn from the med school application process, it is that the process is not personal. It is rather self-centered to take the view that the school (or any school for that matter) is purposefully toying with your emotions. The school and you have somewhat different objectives, and it is probably not the time to get annoyed just because you don't understand an opaque admissions process. Remember, even more mind games occur when one hits residency interviewing and rank lists.

Truth. By then, we'll be doing away rotations, and seeing how well we fare vs the pimping. I expect things to get worse. lol

im not sure why you have to be so upset about it... i mean its just easiest to assume you aren't accepted and then decide later if and when you do get accepted. i'm waitlisted at schools that wont even look at the waitlist till after may 15th. People i know have changed their minds in june and july about where they are going depending on if they get off of waitlists. they know people who want to go there will go there no matter the wait.

i think it's worse that some schools still haven't told me im rejected. or some wait till march to tell me im rejected when they knew that i was rejected the moment they looked at my application.

they told us during our interview that this is how it works. i think they were pretty clear about that. im not sure what else you want to know. if you are so upset about it and aren't interested in going there. be proactive and write to the admissions committee. throwing a hissy fit on here won't do anything.

where did u hear about the march 30 thing? i never heard that before. and since its march 20...it seems like if we dont hear really soon, we wont hear for while (until accepted people withdraw their acceptances...?)

#4 on AAMC's list of recommendations for medical school admissions. (https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/recommendations/62826/policies_admissionofficers.html) The March 30 thing isn't a hard and fast rule as these are all just recommendations (i.e. Drexel doesn't follow the recommendation of returning the deposit if you decide to matriculate elsewhere) but most schools follow these and I was just under the assumption that Pitt would too. They don't have to, but I guess they are "supposed" to.

Chillax dude. Not a hissy fit at all. Just rendering my opinion on their crappy process. This is America.... I can do that.

Hey guys any recent wait-list acceptances?

i was accepted off the waitlist some time last week. maybe they are happening in smaller trickles now instead of big waves.

does anyone know the breakdown for 3rd year clinical grading, ie X% shelf exam Y% subjective evaluation, etc? and whether there is a quota for # of honors, HP, etc?

Does anyone know if Pitt's waitlist is "ranked", or is it simply an alternate "pool"?

When were you waitlisted? Also, did you send any letters/updates? If so, when?

i interviewed way back in october, waitlisted on nov 15. i sent two updates, one in early dec and the other in early feburary (i think...it's been awhile). i sent a really long letter of interest (2+ pages single spaced) sometime in jan or feb too. i never got a response from any of them but i did call earlier this month and they said everything was received.

Ahh I see. Thanks for sharing and congrats!!!

Heck no... this is Pitt.... the genius ADCOM's have a secret plan in place... just sit down, shut up, and wait.

I share your frustration but come on...some of us are sitting here with no acceptances and preparing to re-apply. Your issue with the wait-list while holding an acceptance at another awesome school (congrats by the way!) in hand is almost insulting.

I think they said at the interview that the waitlist is unranked, and they continue to re-review everyone in February/March through orientation. I'm guessing this is why decisions are trickling in.

It's not almost insulting, I actually find it insulting. If you don't like their practices DoctorDachshund, then fine. Withdraw. Please. I beg you. I'd love to take your spot if available. Instead I'm currently focused on finishing my degree, reapplying, and applying for AmeriCorps. Otherwise I'm looking at a fun job search after summer (have a summer job lined up). You have somewhere to go, enjoy it! Congrats!

well said

Has anyone received their financial aid package yet? Is there any grant aid?
Is it true that Pitt Med has financial trouble and won't be offering any grants/scholarships?
I know they cut PSTP funding to half tuition.

That might explain why they don't seem to be making offers to a bunch of folks with very high stats... no merit money....

At least from what I've heard, money at Pitt is based mostly on need. I know an MS4 who honored everything (I mean all classes...all rotations), got an astronomical STEP I and still ended up with all loans every year. That said, I'm just praying to get in lol.

👍

I don't post, I don't have a facebook account, and I rarely look at these threads, but I figured a first worthwile post could go toward combatting the unwarranted negative energy of others on here (blackwell, I sure wish there was a 'like' button here sometimes). 3.9, 42, and I can't wait to go to Pitt. I am grateful for the opportunity to be a doctor, let alone train at one of the best schools in the country. Some people would be surprised at how pleasant life is when you aren't focused on putting others down or feeling like you are owed something.

Not to take sides, but it is pretty self-defeating to combat negative energy by supporting a confrontational and slanderous post, even if it is confrontational against a malcontent.

While I support your uplifting attitude, I think fighting folks like this just encourages them. Let them learn how the world works on their own. They'll figure it out eventually.

...except elblackwell has already been accepted to Pitt.

Seriously, get over it.

Nothing to get over. It's you folks that keep dredging it up. I never took personal shots at anybody here, just Pitt's process. Others have made it personal by attacking me. I suggest you all get over it. I'm done with this thread.

I'm done with this thread.

You've already said that before, and then you came back and made unprovoked comments.
I think you're taking the whole application process too personally and taking offense that Pitt has not accepted you yet. You got into a great school, go enjoy it.

Pitt had 15 med students this year that did not match. This surprised me. Is this common??

http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2012/03/16/pitt-medical-students-find-their-match/

I'm pretty sure everyone from Pitt matched somewhere this year.

Thanks for the link. No need for false rumors on this board 👍

From the article:

The students that don’t match go through a whole other process to find an open slot somewhere – anywhere.

But that’s not needed at Pitt this year.

“Everyone who wanted a spot got a spot,” says Dean of Students at the School of Medicine, Dr. Joan Harvey.

How'd you find that out? That's seems unbelievable
My friend is a fourth year med. student there. He didn't match and they had a meeting for all the students who didn't match. There were 15!!

It is NOT a rumor. And yes, they are now going through "the process" to try to match somewhere. I hate to say this, but that quote is false.

I believe you are forgetting an important point: the Scramble happened during the week before Match Day. At least some, if not all, people who did not match scrambled into positions.

152 people are reported on the 2012 match list. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think the class size is 167. 152 sounds about right, so one way or another it appears as if everyone matched.

Honestly md2, I'm only reporting what was told to me from a good friend of our family. He did NOT match and said he was one of 15. In fact they were told several days before the 16th, so they wouldn't have to go to the "ceremony" when everyone else was opening their envelopes.

But even if there were some who didn't match, it just shows that there isn't a free pass, even at Pitt. Then again, what did you expect? Plenty of others matched into great programs across the nation, so i'm sure that most of us here should have no problem matching, granted that we do the work. simple enufff.

The med school doesn't make the doctor. Hard work makes the doctor. If you don't put in the work, you won't match no matter what school you go to.

I'm only going to address this issue once, because it's absurd that someone is trashing Pitt like this and I take it personally being here. This statement is ABSOLUTELY false. While some people did not initially match into their specialty of choice, everyone ended up getting in somewhere. And NO, it was not 15 people. A lot less. For what it's worth, however, the people who did not initially match were trying to match into Neurosurgery, RadOnc, and Ortho...ALL very difficult specialties to match into! Probably in the top 5 hardest specialties to match into. So please, stop spreading false rumors. For those of you accepted and who are still concerned, this is something you can address at 2nd Look when they give you the match list.

im not sure why, but the forum from last year, with its huge waitlist movements, made me feel really confident about my chances. i sent a letter of interest, took on a difficult course load my senior year (to show that i am still working hard) and thought i was a strong candidate but im feeling worse and worse at this point.

Hang in there. Most schools have not released fin aid yet and many many students are hanging on to multiple acceptances at this point. I would start losing hope at the end of May when people have received financial aid and let go of all but one acceptance. The students I spoke to said to keep writing letters if you can ( don't be annoying but show them you are still interested). Good luck!
