When I spoke with admissions recently they told me the alternate list is unranked as of now, but that at the very end of the season (May 15 or something) they look at everyone on the alternate list again and make admissions decisions...so I assume that they do have some way of ranking us then (I was confused about the unranked thing)

I spoke to one of the admissions committee members at the end of August about how people are selected and he said that if 5 committee members approve your acceptance you'll get in without getting on the alternate list. If 4 committee members approve, then you'll be an alternate, but there is a good chance you'll get in later in the season. So, I think the main rank is based on the number of committee members there are giving your file the okay. Then, if I remember correctly, there is a GPA/MCAT rank, with ties going to USC alumni. Finally, I think if there are any other sort of disagreements about whether you will get accepted the last word goes to your interviewers.

I tried to recall as much as I could from memory and I had some notes that I wrote down as well, but I may have missed some piece of the details or remembered something incorrectly.

WOW! This makes me a lot more hopeful...did they say that later in the season was in May (at the end) or do they give acceptances to alternates all throughout? It seems like if you were voted by 4/5 (assuming it is out of 5 committee members?) this is pretty good news? Or I could be way off here?

He didn't really specify when I spoke to him, but I would imagine it would be after the interviews have all been completed.

4 out of 5 committee members is pretty good news from what I understand. They do however give alternate status to people who only get the okay from 3 members (I think).

I will probably talk to him again sometime this month or next and I will ask him for some more clarification then. I'll post what he says.

Interviewed late October, alternate listed last week. My friend who is an M1 says that lots of people in her class got in off the waitlist, so I'm holding out hope. Its my top choice right now.

So for the specific way the alternate list works at USC, is it not helpful to send updates/letter of intent/contact your interviewers? Or is it perhaps too early to be doing all that? I guess I should call the admissions office and ask.

Been wondering this too. The last time someone posted news of an II was November 2nd. I've been complete since mid-August...I guess at least I haven't been outright rejected? I swear I'm going crazy from all the waiting though.

Yeah, just from reading this thread it seems that they're not very receptive to updates and all either....was complete in early August, but they've already rejected some pre-interview so maybe we all still have a chance?

I've been complete for about 2 months and called yesterday. I was told just to keep waiting and that they do not accept pre-interview updates or LOI.

I was complete since September and received an II last week (able to schedule for mid-January). From this thread and last years it looks like they will continue to send II for the next couple months so I wouldn't get discouraged.

I called and they said if they have any updates they will contact us via email. Also not receptive to update letters before interviews as someone has already mentioned. But good luck to those that recently got an interview!

Same result as Kono..I was politely, but firmly told to check the website. They didn't take my AMCAS # or name. Sad panda.

Hey, no problem. There were 7 dates in February and one on the first Friday in March. I had no idea that Keck had morning and afternoon interviews. Good luck to you too!🙂
