I agree. I felt that they seemed to emphasize the TMC alot and not other features of the school. I wish the initial presentation had been more in depth as at other schools Ive been to. My interviewers could not answers any questions I had about the school itself and one even gave me false information. This school has so much going for it in addition to the TMC and I ony got this info from asking the students a lot of questions. The students were verY friendly and seemed to love being there.

Actually that is one of the things that I was thinking about also. They didn't really talk at all about their curriculum or how it was structured besides putting up a slide that showed how it was outlined. I guess most students that were interviewing already knew what to expect with regards to that but at every other interview I've been to schools have been trying to sell their curriculum as their number one asset. The initial presentation didn't really present us with anything besides an interesting presentation with Dr. Duke lol.

You'll adjust to any curriculum you're thrown in to. I like to tell interviewees just to forget that part because you're going to get used to the structure regardless of what it is.

People who don't go to UTH complain about UTH's block schedule. Students who go to UTH do not complain too much about it. Our Step and shelf scores suggest that it's effective at teaching us the material.

I had the feeling that they explained their curriculum as well as they needed to. It's not exactly complicated...

Yeah I agree about all of those things. However, if applicants are being nitpicky (as we all usually are as neurotic pre-meds), it is important for us to have things to hold onto and remember besides the fact that we were in the TMC (which is amazing I agree) and that there are students that are happy and successful there. Iono, as far as I'm concerned practically every student I've met at every interview thus far has been happy and loved the school that they are at so it's more of the objective things like curriculum that set places apart from one another.

I guess what I mean is that the Admissions Committee sales pitch wasn't as good at UTH as other places IMO.

/rant about nothing

From my experience, my choice will only come down to one thing.

Location.

I don't care about rank, I like certain curriculums more than others but I can adapt to anything, all of the students are happy, all of the USMLE scores are great, all of the match lists are great, etc.

Location and the opportunities that stem from that location is what sets these schools apart. That isn't just where I'll be living but teaching hospitals, facilities, student-run clinics, etc.

Med schools are 90% the same. Find what makes that 10% difference in your mind and don't worry about what other people say.

Is there a specific day when batches of interview invites are sent out by UTH?

How do you differentiate Baylor from UTH then?

Different curriculum, shorter pre-clinical years, a buttload of differences that come with being private vs public, more recognizable "name" outside of Texas (if you care, which you probably shouldn't). Of course the schools will have different "feels", but that you can't even begin to gauge until after you interview at both places.

After interviewing at both schools I made my decision between Baylor and UTH purely based on the "feel". You'll adapt to either curriculum and schedule and I really don't feel that one vs. the other will make much of a difference in the long run. The only thing schedule-wise I liked better about UTH was that we have a longer summer between MS1-2, giving us more time for research/preceptorships, and more importantly, relaxation.

I agree with this

and this.

All of the stuff about school will sort itself out. You'll get used to curriculum and facilities and whatever else. Things that will really help or hurt your med school experience are based around daily living things like where you're going to live, how you're going to get to school, what you want to do in your free time, etc. Every med school is stressful and you'll need ways to decompress, whether it's by seeing friends or family or sports or concerts or going out with classmates. Find a place that you think would offer you the best not-in-school experience, because they'll all give you fairly equal in-school experiences.

This is going to be a little stream-of-concious-y: (MS1 here)

Curriculum is really unimportant imo, everyone is learning the same things (citation: friends at almost every school in TX), biggest difference is order you do it in.

Simply put its a modified "traditional" curriculum with overlapping areas (anatomy of heart, histo of heart, development of heart, bchem cardiac enzymes/muscle) and a clinical focus.

The schedule makes a much bigger difference. Ie summers, Baylors reduced 1.5 year basic sciences etc.

As has been said, location is a pretty huge factor. Along with access to variable and quality hospitals, Houston offers a wide range of things to do compared to most of the Texas school locations.

Also 3rd/4th year are way more important - so just think of it as them showing off the parts that really matter.

Also on block week - its really not that bad. And I prefer it a 1000x having a test every 1 or 2 weeks. I studied pretty reliably throughout Block, finished lectures a week early (yay streaming!), and focused on studying the last week of classes. Block week also has a lot of time to study (the tests don't take that long). I slept 8 hours a night, had dinner with friends one night and did well on my exams. It's not the week long study non-stop fest you imagine.

🙂

So they should be handing out invites for the 21/28th this week, if they stick with their 3 weeks notice trend, which makes half their interviews done already for the year..... *sigh*

3 weeks notice ? *humph* I just got my interview invite today for 1 week and 2 days in advance (October 7th). Maybe that has something to do with my living in Houston and studying right next door to them at Rice? Anyhow, reading the interview email was a delightful way to begin my day 😀

Anyone else interviewing October 7th ?

Congrats dude!

This makes me curious. Why did the both of us get invited the same day yet get interviews almost 3 weeks apart? Can anyone present any rationale for that?

Probably someone cancelled. Or... did you enclose the optional extra $300 in cash with your application?

Cyanide I wouldn't worry about it. My friend from Harvard got an invite with only a week's notice as well.

Also, I have heard the date you interview may be affected if you are a dual degree applicant or if a spot randomly opened up for an earlier date where someone else switched and they stuck you in.

I guess a spot opened up and they stuck me in there. Hopefully thats a good sign 😀 Anyway, thank you guys for your words. I have my fingers crossed for UTH 😀

For those with II's today, when was your TMDSAS processed? I'm starting to get worried

Interview 10/28 (OOS) 🙂
I've never been to Houston before so I'm not as familiar with the TMC as most. Could someone please give a few examples of the types of opportunities it has given them? Thanks!

I transmitted the end of July and have heard nothing. I guess my interview season is over for Houston. Sigh, I always love to see how awesome the school is. 🙁

I transmitted 6/10 and haven't heard anything either. I contacted the school, and they said my application was still under review, but I don't really know if that means I even have a chance. 🙁

Both of you should keep your hopes up high. All texas schools are amazing! And in the end, it doesn't matter which medical school you go to, what matters is how you do in medical school and your USMLE scores. So, good luck and don't worry. December is a long way away.

True, but it's a lot closer for those of us who applied pretty early in May, June, or even July.

In the last few weeks I've transitioned from incessantly needing to check my email and stressing about "is today the day?" to just expecting nothing. If I hear anything, I'll be elated, but I don't think it's likely anymore. Maybe that sounds discouraging, and a month ago it would have been, but I'm actually a lot happier and less stressed now. I've already had three great interviews and hopefully one of them pulls through because I'd be totally happy at any of those schools.

Not a student, but I'll just name-drop for the heck of it:

MD Anderson (#1 cancer center in the world - basically takes up most of a city block, or so it seems)
Memorial Herman (this is UTH's main teaching hospital - typical big city trauma stuff)
Methodist (another gigantic Level 1 trauma center - I don't know if UTH rotates there, but it's literally right across the street).

Many of the institutions here are pioneers in things like transplant surgeries, air ambulance services, etc. The sheer breadth of the TMC is pretty impressive. If there's a medical specialty out there, you'll find it at the TMC.

Interviewed here last Friday. The interview day was by far the most impressive of the three schools I've interviewed at so far, and this school is now head and shoulders above the other two on my preference list.

The TMC, as many posters have already said, is simply astounding. There is cutting edge research in literally every field. It feels like a relatively large city where the only industry is healthcare. It's definitely got a sense of community (it even has its own newspaper!), and, per the student ambassadors, all of those world class institutions are available for you to do shadowing and/or electives (i.e., heme/onc at MD Anderson, peds at Texas Children's, cards at Texas Heart Institute, etc.). They said that they've never heard of anyone asking to shadow getting turned down by anyone in the med center.

The cohesiveness and fellowship among students is also really impressive, and is the best I've seen at any school (and the other two schools really pushed how supportive their students were). Apparently, nearly half of every class takes part in the ambassadors program.

On a less (or more, depending on your priorities) serious note, the food was also better than the other schools at which I've interviewed. Breakfast burritos and fajitas? Yes please.

To any current UTH students on these forums that help out with the interview days, keep up the good work. Y'all do a fantastic job of selling the school and making interviewees feel comfortable and welcome.

Tl;dr: Great student atmosphere, TMC is amazing, and food is good.

My top choice by far. Hopefully they'll show me some love!

We're glad to hear that you guys enjoy the tours. We really look forward to interview season because we like meeting interviewees and telling you about our school and why we love it.

Remember that MD Anderson is a UT facility and thus is available for several of our rotations. I'm doing urology there now and am seeing rare cancers that most practicing urologists might only read about in books. It's a great resource for us.

🙁... I'll never get a chance to interview at this great school.

How many people do they pre-match?

Historically UTH was always "the school that gave out very few pre-matches (like 10-20)" but last year there were some changes in the admissions office and they seemed to give out around as many pre-matches as most of the other Texas schools.

EDIT: Alienwares, you probably know better than me! 🙂

I had friends that interviewed two weeks ago and they said that there was no mention of the small amount of pre-matches. I interviewed three weeks ago though and was told 2 or 3 times that there were only around 40 prematches.

Hey, is anyone here in the JAMP program? I'm a freshman looking into it...
I had a few questions regarding admission into JAMP.... Their website says you have to either qualify for a Pell Grant or have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) below $8000. My EFC is below 8k, but not by like, WAY too much. Does the JAMP organization consider that? Or is it just, if you are below 8000, then admission into the program is the same as all other people below 8000?
And how much are Highschool grades/SAT taken into factor?

I asked one of the admissions staff about this and they told me that there was no year-to-year quota or limit (other than the overall class size, obviously) on the number of pre-matches.

fwiw, they were still telling kids 10% last year, even after sending out as many as they did.

either way, it's best not to get your hopes up or to get too disappointed in the pre-match or even the match at our school. we have good wait list movement.

May I ask what were your other 2 schools? If they were TX schools, how would you contrast them to Houston?

Just curious if anyone OOS w/ <30 MCAT has received an II?

Last year they sent out ~5 batches of prematch emails. I seriously doubt they were sending these to 5 people at a time, so I'd guess that they've increased the number of prematch offers they give quite a bit above the 10%.

What do you guys think about sending an "update email"? I have received interview invites from 4 other texas schools, including BCM, yet have heard nothing from this school. I was complete in early July and received a "your app is complete" email on 08/16 like many others did.

to those who received interviews here, what were your stats? Im trying to gauge if i might be able to get an interview or not.

Cyanide what lab are you in? I'm at Rice also and applied - Interview Nov. 10th 🙂
