What do you guys think about sending an "update email"? I have received interview invites from 4 other texas schools, including BCM, yet have heard nothing from this school. I was complete in early July and received a "your app is complete" email on 08/16 like many others did.

I called their office a week ago and was shortly told that they do not accept any updated transcripts, letters of interest, etc. for applicants who have not yet been interviewed.

I guess they don't create a physical file for you unless you're interviewed, so they literally would have no place to put whatever you send them and it just gets thrown away.

I'm a current MS1 here----just for another take on the school.

Yes, you hear it at every school, but the camaraderie here and friendships already built 8 weeks into school is mind-blowing to me. It's interesting how people band together so quickly to help each other. We have multitudes of resources and posts in our facebook group daily with people dropping helpful mnemonics and study aids along with other stuff.

The location is amazing, like everyone else has said. But it can't be overemphasized---being in the TMC is a chance you cannot pass up. (In all honesty---when I was decided on schools I kept coming back to the thought that I would be in the TMC surrounded by heralded physicians in any-and-every field.) The professors tell you to go shadow every-so-often (even in first year) and when you do that---think of the possibilities.

Price---yeah, no one likes to think of it, but UTH's tuition is ridiculously low and you come out of the schooling in far less debt.

It's not only the students who are helpful and giving of their time and efforts, but also the professors. When class president and senator nominees were making campaign videos they filled them with professors, poking fun at themselves, and simply lending a helping hand.

You really can't go wrong with UTH.

true, but it's a lot closer for those of us who applied pretty early in may, june, or even july.

In the last few weeks i've transitioned from incessantly needing to check my email and stressing about "is today the day?" to just expecting nothing. If i hear anything, i'll be elated, but i don't think it's likely anymore. Maybe that sounds discouraging, and a month ago it would have been, but i'm actually a lot happier and less stressed now. I've already had three great interviews and hopefully one of them pulls through because i'd be totally happy at any of those schools.

+1

May I ask what were your other 2 schools? If they were TX schools, how would you contrast them to Houston?

In the interest of maintaining anonymity, I'll just say that the other two schools were in smaller cities. Both are great schools that I could see myself being very happy at. Call them schools A and B.

A and B are both excellent for a variety of reasons. The students love where they are, the class is very cohesive and welcoming. Both have state-of-the-art sim centers and provide opportunities to do third and fourth year in a variety of locations. I feel like either school would set you up to do as well as you wanted on the steps.

But UT-H has all of the desirable qualities of both schools. The students, as I said, have a great sense of fellowship, the school has a state of the art sim center, sets you up to do well on the steps, and provides a wide variety of places to do clerkships and electives.

The main difference, as I said, is that UT-H also has the TMC, which can't be matched anywhere in the state and only at a few locations nationwide (arguably). I'm a city person, and I love living in places with diversity-- and Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the world. You're right next to the museum district, Rice University, Hermann Park, etc. Student housing is a few minutes' ride on the light rail and is available at a very affordable price. And the TMC just has a certain "feel". While you're there, you really do feel like you're in the middle of everything, like you're at the epicenter of medical advances. And, of course, you are.

A lot of med students talk about the feel of a place, that you'll just know when you find it. I certainly found it with UT-H.

So does anyone know how they evaluate applications here? I had called to ask if they accepted updates, but they don't, because they have nowhere to put it until they make you a file after interviews.
So if they don't accept updates, any way to have our file re-reviewed? I'm pretty sure from my last phone call to the admissions office that I'm in the "no interview" pile (though I'm getting this off of how the convo went and not what was actually said - she towed the party line, "your file is awaiting decision from the executive committee"). 😕

I think they'd tell you if you've been evaluated and are on the "There's no way we'd interview you" list. It's unfortunate but there are so many applicants but only so many interview spots.. you just have to wait to see if they get to you. They might not have even looked at your file yet because there are so many and they're backed up.

I know it's October but the interview season isn't over. Be patient.

Yeah it's not over until January 6, so we have plenty o' time to receive an invite still people. That or I may be the first guy ever to attend the reapplicant workshop twice ha

Don't get too discouraged. I was a 3 time applicant and things worked out well for me.

In the reapplicant workshop what did they say that people needed to work on to get in??

Thank you for the encouragement, both of you! I hope I do get an interview/acceptance here. It would be awesome to live at home and attend this school 🙂. It has a great program and amazing clinical opportunities!

I interviewed here this friday and I was completely blown away by the facilities these guys had! I fell in love with the school. I really really hope I get admitted to this place. Can I write a letter of interest to really let them know that this place is my first choice?

finally.. invite for 11/4 .. ive been wanting to see this place!

Congrats!
Mind sharing your stats and when you were complete?

+1. All the other schools seem to do II's in a very systematic and predictable way, but I still can't figure out UT-H.

Interviewed here this Friday and it was absolutely amazing. Both of my interviewers were great and very laid back. Walking around the TMC is truly an awesome experience and makes for a great interview day. Good luck to everyone interviewing in the coming weeks! Be sure to relax, everyone is very helpful and the day is very relaxed. I love this place and hope I receive a pre-match.

Honestly haven't been on this forum in a while after I started medical school at UTH (I used to LIVE on here) but its great to see that people are enjoying the tours and the cohesiveness of our class. We try our best to convey the atmosphere that we have here within a short amount of time.

After going through the application process a few times, I know how nerve wracking the day can be, and I wish all of you the best of luck and look forward to meeting those of you who are interviewing soon!

Exhale...interview invite for 11/11 😍

Mind if I ask when your transmitted? Transmitted 7/26 here and have heard back from BCM and UTSW before UT-H 😕

Mine was transmitted 7/6. It was a long wait, and I still haven't heard from UTSW 😕

Thats odd, Mine was transmitted 8/16 and I interviewed at Houston on 10/7. And I haven't heard back from UTSW. You obviously have good stuff going on for you that you've heard back from Baylor and SW. Perhaps send one of those update letters to UTH? *humph* its really odd how you've heard from Baylor and SW and not from UTH.

Edit: I looked at ur MDapps and your stats are much stronger than mine. Something is definitely up. Contact UTH and see whats up with them or atleast send an update letter.

From what I'm seeing, it seems as if UT-H invites people who live in Houston earlier since they don't have to give them a 3 week notice, so I'm guessing you probably reside in the area. Either that, or their process is truly holistic and my app just doesn't ring with them 🙁

I thought UT Houston didn't accept updates unless you've had an interview, if I don't get anything in the next week or so I'll probably give them a call.

Yeah, UT-Houston does not accept update letters or additional materials before an applicant is interviewed. They don't create files for applicants until then, so they have no place to put anything if you do send it in, and thus no way for it to be reviewed by the adcoms.

Yes your right. I do live in the Houston area. In fact my undergraduate institution is literally right across the street from UT-H. I received an interivew invite on 9/29 I believe. Which was only a 9 day notice before my interview date. But still, in general from what I've seen, UTH gets back to you 6 weeks after TMDSAS has been transmitted (which was the case for my interview invite).

On a side note, you have amazing stats, don't worry. Your definitely getting admitted in a really good institution. Just keep your hopes up high. UTH is an amazing school, but all Texas schools provide excellent quality education and prepare you well to take the USMLE (which just happens to be almost the sole determinant of where you get your residency).

So if they don't accept any material pre-interview, isn't there any way to get them to look at your application again? I mean considering that they have thousands of applications, the application is very likely to get buried under a lot of other apps and never be looked at again. There has to be some way to get the ad comms to start thinking about a certain candidate again. Like maybe just a phone call if not an update letter?

Thanks for the support, just getting worried considering I only have 3 interviews and quite frankly bombed my first two. Good luck with the rest of your interviews :luck:

Well after any given interview you have a 0.4 probability of getting accepted according to previous stats. So, 3 interviews means you have a probability of 0.8 of getting accepted just by virtue of having 3 interviews. Considering your numbers are really good, you probably don't have much to worry about anyway. Have you not heard from UTMB or UTHSCSA or A&M? 3 interviews is a luxury, some people don't even get those.

But yea, I know someone who had an argument with an interviewer at SW and still got prematched there. So, theres no such thing as a "bombed interview", unless ofcourse you nervously sat there and didn't say a word.

Just to alleviate your worries, do not believe that UT-H usually gets back to applicants 6 weeks after submission. Maybe the 10 or so people someone might know. What about those who submitted in May? UTH didn't start interviews until September. Be patient. With your good stats, you'll probably hear from them. I know it's hard to wait and I'm bad at following my own advice to be calm, but there are still 2+ months left in the interview season.

Hope you're right, Nov. 15th can't get here fast enough. I did interview at UTMB, but haven't heard back from UTHSCSA. Never submitted my secondary for A&M or Tech so I sort of shot myself in the foot with regards to that.

@Doc: Yeah I'm just anxious because most of my friends submitted in May and are pretty much done with their interview season. I feel like the later the interview, the lesser the chance.

Well again, mine was transmitted 7/6 and just got invited yesterday 10/12 for 11/11 interview. That was about 3 months wait for me so everyone keeps your hope up !!!

I interviewed at UT-H on 9/9, and loved it. I got a great impression, all the students seemed happy and friendly, rainbows and unicorns popped out of the walls, the whole bit.

After talking to interviewees at other medical schools, however, many of them have heard that UT-H is very competitive, with students distributing "study guides" with false information, nobody helping each other out, etc etc.

Can any current students on this forum clear up the discrepancy? Why might UT-H be perceived as cutthroat? Or are people just jealous? 😉

maybe these "interviewees" are supplying you with "false information" so you dont take their seat....

Such a lie! I'm an MS1 at UTH and my class is so in love with each other it's kind of rediculous. We're very close and very cohesive and we help each other ALL the time. It's one of the nice things about not being graded on a curve. If we all meet the percentage cutoff then we all get Honors. So people are constantly sending out very useful things they made or found or heard from a professor. If there is false information in a study guide that people sent out, it was an honest mistake. I know I helped put together a study guide that I posted to our facebook group and then later found a mistake in it. It was definitely not intentional and I felt really bad about it. Luckily that wasn't on the test and didn't cost anyone points.

There are 0 gunners in our class. Are there people who work hard? yes. Are there people who stay up crazy hours and spend their free time in the gross lab reviewing structures? yes. But do they intentionally sabatoge or refuse to help others? NEVER! I don't really think gunners would like UTH very much since we're kinda of the "We're All In This Together" mindset.

Our curriculum gets pretty mis-represented on the interview circuit as well.

MS1 here also and I'd have to say this is all news to me, most likely because it's plain not true haha. I never heard this rumor while I was on the interview trail last year and it certainly hasn't been my experience so far.

I'll make a few notes about using the cohesiveness of a school to make decisions about where you'd like to attend. First, just because a class above you gets along really well doesn't mean that your class will be the same - it will be made of different people. So make sure that you like the school for more than perceived social scene. In addition to thinking about the closeness of the existing class, think about the kinds of administrative policies that promote that cohesiveness (institutional culture, grading policies, etc.). Secondly, cohesiveness is a matter of perspective - what some people see as cohesive, others may view as cliquish.

I don't say these things to disparage UTH or my class, but rather to encourage you to really think through your impressions 🙂

I'd like to re-emphasize what my schoolmates said. This is absolute rubbish! One thing I will say is this, unless someone actually goes to a school and is speaking of their own experiences, it's all speculation and nonsense rumors. I assure you that the 'interviewees' didn't hear this from a UT-H student.

Go to your interviews, get a feel for the schools yourself, and make a decision from there. Do not base your decision on what other people said or may have heard.

Lol I think kkhun is tying to get a rumor started.

Only one of many interviewees here, but I definitely did not get that vibe and I talked to a LOT of people. I wouldn't put any stock in it unless you have some other specific information.

Sweet, thanks everyone!! Especially the med students who still hang out on here on SDN. 🙂

Lesson learned: hearsay is full o' trash.

Just got my first acceptance from UTH this morning!
Best of luck to all of you 🙂

Don't get too discouraged. I was a 3 time applicant and things worked out well for me.

I would have never guessed you applied 3 times. That's awesome how committed you are/were. Was there ever a point (after your second rejection maybe) that you thought about pursuing a different career? What kept you motivated? Were you determined to keep applying even if you had to wait 5+ years?

Congratulations!

Yes feel like I might skip SDN for awhile while the acceptances are coming in... nothing like feeling left out! 😀

No, I never thought I'd give up and do something else. I felt like it would work out for me eventually. I decided to get a master's to get a better job while I was waiting to get in, but that's about it. If you're determined to be a physician and are capable of doing so, why settle for a different career? You'll never be as happy.

Sometimes a lil break from SDN is nice.
